Earlier this year West Berkshire Council were forced to deliver us a challenging budget proposal; a reduction to their investment of £136,000 from 1 April. This was a devastating blow. Over the last two years investment had already reduced by £68,000 and we have worked tirelessly hard to plug the gap, but a cut of this scale in the timeframe would have had very damaging consequences.

The great news is that your feedback to the council’s formal consultation helped shape their final decision. The consultation in relation to theatres received 45% of the overall responses, and it was a strong indicator for how integral you believe we are in making Newbury and the district a great place to work, live and visit.

As a result the Council made use of Transitional Funding to support the Trust and instead we secured a reduction of £80,000. Whilst this presented some immediate challenges, we have found a way forward and what shines through is the huge amount of public support we have recently received.

Subsequently we launched the Love Your Corn Exchange fundraising appeal; asking those who are able to, to give a donation. The response was again staggering and we raised just under £12,000 in little over six weeks. Whilst we must continue to fundraise for our charitable work the immediate boost has undeniably been a life-line, but there is still further work for us to do.

But for now, as we continue to plan for our future, we bring you a great season of live performances. There are two extraordinary outdoor performances as well as the annual Festival of Light lantern procession and of course the family-favourite annual pantomime; this year Cinderella. The nation’s favourite Christmas show will receive a huge sprinkling of magic and a splattering of chaos as we welcome back writer and director, Phil Willmott. Our pantomime is Newbury’s biggest Christmas event and with Cinderella promising to be the best one yet (and with tickets already selling fast), make sure you buy your tickets soon!

With heartfelt thanks for the continued support and commitment from you, our staff and our volunteers, we look forward to welcoming you back very soon.

For years we’ve been growing a reputation for presenting and producing spectacular large-scale outdoor events. Recent years have seen this area of our work go from strength to strength and in 2014 we proudly opened 101 on Greenham Business Park, one of the country’s first fully dedicated creation spaces for the Outdoor Arts. It’s been a hive of activity bringing exciting productions to audiences in Newbury and beyond. Here’s a little taster of some of the key events and activity we have coming up over the summer months.

CROSSING LINES: THE POWER OF DIVERSITYThis year we’ve embarked upon an incredible project supporting the creative practice of 17 – 25 year olds.

Co-funded by Creative Europe, we’ve been able to offer a group of young people from the local area the opportunity to connect with 101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space here in the UK and the renowned German outdoor arts companies Pan.Optikum and Rapucation.

Throughout this year young adults from ten partner cities across Europe are developing a site-specific performance to be performed in their hometown.

We’ll be inviting a small audience in Newbury to get a first glimpse at the work-in-progress showing before members of the UK company are invited to return to Europe, re-develop the work and perform in an exciting piece of large-scale professional outdoor theatre both in Newbury and on tour internationally throughout Europe in 2017.

See its origins here first on Saturday 27 August. If you are interested in attending please email [email protected]

DANCE

FOR YOU I LONG THE LONGEST PRESENTED BY LUKE BROWN DANCE

A double bill of alluring dance theatre exploring the ever-changing nature of love.

Reflecting on the beauty and brutality of true love, Brown’s theatrical recreation of real life romance is both charming and thought provoking. With intimate storytelling and intricate choreography, the evening blurs the lines between fantasy and reality in a honest, and often comical, search for a ‘happily ever after’.

The second piece Second Self investigates the human need to love and be held. ‘Princess’ tells the tale of three people’s beautifully individual and absurd stories around memories of romance.

This performance will also feature a curtain-raiser by local dancers.

ANDY HAMILTON: CHANGE MANAGEMENT If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, comedy writer and performer Andy Hamilton will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen, and the changes yet to come.

In his 60 years on this planet, Andy Hamilton has experienced many changes. For instance, he was once a 6’4” tall professional basketball player, until a tree fell on him.

But, of course, change is an inescapable part of the human condition. Some changes are good, some bad. Why can’t they be more clearly labelled? How did we end up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows go?
