Merry Christmas! Now that I have your attention! Today, September 10, is the first rehearsal for choir and handbells as we prepare for our 17th Annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols (Sunday evening, December 10 at 6 PM — put on your calendar now!). Welcome new baby!We are rejoicing with the Schultes as they welcome Clara

Josephine to their family. Clara was born August 31, weigh-ing 9 pounds, 11 ounces and measuring 22". Clara is privi-leged to have two big brothers: John Hudson and Daniel. Please support this family with your prayers for a smooth transition as they all adjust to "baby schedule". Congratula-tions to the Schultes!

A taste of heavenWhen an admirer asked renowned pianist Vladmir Horow-

itz how he could play so beautifully, he’s said to have replied that anyone could play the notes, but the true music lay in the pauses between them. The same can be said of life.

Rabbi Evan Moffic (Shalom for the Heart) writes, “It is in the pauses — the rests, the spaces in between — that meaning is made and that holiness is felt.” Nowadays we keep so busy there’s hardly a pause or space in our day.

“But that’s not the way God created us [or] the world,” Moffic continues. “God worked, then rested. God created, then paused. … Thus, our Sabbath is the day when we can marvel at the beauty of the world God created. It is the day we enjoy what the ancient sages called ‘a taste of heaven.’ It is a day when we stop thinking about the what of life and remind ourselves of the why of life.”

Our building mortgage has been paid in full! Praise the Lord!

It’s been a summer of rough news for America. Racism, riots, and political violence. Com-

munities on the Gulf Coast continue wading through the devastation of hurricane Harvey, and now another storm is bearing down on Florida. We have plenty of reasons to be pray-ing and doing all we can to alleviate suffering. There’s cause for grief about the news—but not for pessimism.

Writing at The Guardian, Oliver Burkeman suggests that despite a dragging civil war in Syria, heart-rending photos of drowned refugees, North Korea’s nuclear saber-rattling, disasters, terrorist attacks, and racial violence, the world is objectively better now than it’s ever been.

Hard to believe? Well, here are the facts: Swedish historian Mark Norberg breaks down global indicators of human flourishing into nine categories: food, sanitation, life expectancy, poverty, violence, the state of the environment, literacy, freedom, equality, and the condi-tions of childhood. And in nearly all of these categories, we’ve seen vast improvement in my lifetime.

Despite the fact that nine out of ten Americans say worldwide poverty is holding steady or worsening, the percentage of people on this planet who live on less than two dollars a day—what the United Nation’s defines as “extreme poverty”—has fallen below ten percent, which is the lowest it’s ever been.

The scourge of child mortality is also at a record low. Fifty percent fewer children under five die today than did thirty years ago.

Worldwide, 300,000 more people gain access to electricity every day. In 1900, global life expectancy was just 31 years. Today, it’s an impressive 71 years. And violent crime rates in the United States are the lowest they’ve been in half a century.

Nicholas Kristof wasn’t too far afield when he called 2016 “the best year in the history of humanity.” This year may see even more progress.

So why do these cheery pronouncements strike us as inaccurate—even outrageous? Why—according to a recent poll by YouGov—do a vanishingly small six percent of Ameri-cans think the world as a whole is becoming a better place?

Burkeman lays much of the blame on the press. Thanks to a 24-hour news cycle that actively seeks out and overplays the worst stories, our perception of the world is skewed. “We are not merely ignorant of the facts,” he writes. “We are actively convinced of depressing ‘facts’ that aren’t true.” And no wonder! It’s hard to sell papers and get Web traffic with good news. No one reports when a plane take off. They only report when they crash.

But a great deal of the blame for our unjustifiably gloomy view of the world also falls on our shoulders. Quite simply, we often enjoy being angry about the state of the world, espe-cially when it allows us to blame someone else. We are addicted to news-induced anger.

That’s why it’s so important—while acknowledging the desperate evil and suffering around us—to appreciate the good news, the progress, and the things we have to cel-ebrate. After all, how can we truly comprehend what’s wrong with the world if we don’t recognize when something is going right?

War, famine, disease, and hatred should all remind us that God’s world, which He created and pronounced “very good,” is broken, and it’s our fault. But here’s the real comfort: It’s still—as the hymn says—our Father’s world. Let us therefore never forget that “though the wrong seems oft so strong God is the ruler yet.”

As Christians, we know where history is headed, and we know how the story ends—with the redemption and restoration of all things. We who have the good news should be the first to recognize all good news, not in spite of, but in the midst of the bad.

The Importance of Good News

Headlines You're Not Hearing | Eric Metaxas & G.Shane Morris | BreakPoint | 9/7/2017

Page 4: Cornerstone Bible Church Welcome€¦ · Let Lorie Steele know if you plan to bring your child(ren) if you have never participated before. This class is open to all women of CBC and

the Word of God being read first with each lesson, then music sung to support the Scripture. Pray now for all the ringers and singers to remain healthy and singing for the glory of God. Pray also for Andy and his great contribution and responsibility. Thanks be to God!

13. Dick Kay writes that he is over-whelmed every year when his spiritual birthday arrives on August 30th. That was the day, at age 22, when he walked into First Baptist Church of Binghamton, NY, blind, deaf, dumb, and dead. Two hours later when he left, his eyes had been opened, his ears had heard His voice, his understand-ing was enlightened, and his spirit made alive! It has been an amazing 58 years with the Lord! He is extremely indebted to the Lord for how He has brought so many of His amazing children into his life, not only those who brought Dick to the Lord, but also those whom He has used to teach him, guide him, pray for him, and support him. There are so many saints at CBC who are included in this list, and to whom Betty and Dick are forever indebted. He says "Thank you all so very, VERY much".

14. Win Strickland asks us to pray for the elders' meeting tonight. Pray with them for all the various transition activities and plans that are fully underway and for those that begin soon. Pray specifically for those groups that have just begun their work in the last few months to come together well and make progress. Pray each of us would love and support one another, and work together well as we continue toward our future at CBC.

15. Paul Schmidt says translation work on the book of Galatians which collaborated with a tribal project in NE India finished September 1st. Paul has returned to Dallas. Pray also for Kathy as she has begun teach-ing algebra at the home school co-op, and also at a small private school in DeSoto. She has a large group of students, which is a blessing, but it also means more work. Their family is doing well.

16. Rob Kocher says that September 18-22 is the semi-annual International Leader-ship Team and Board of Directors meetings for AFCI. These meetings will take place at the International Office here in Lilburn where people from up to seven countries gather together to plan and strategize the overall ministry of AFCI. Pray for Rob as he helps facilitate preparations for the meet-ings. Pray for Tammy as she helps coordinate the hospitality needs during that week.

Please remember the following special missions requests taken from our monthly prayer guide. Numbers refer to days of the month.

10. Tricia Miller received a good report in her follow-up exam from a complete hysterectomy due to endometrial carci-noma. The pathology report indicates no further treatment is necessary. There will be follow-up exams. Tricia continues with physical therapy due to her broken wrist in March. She lacks some range of motion. She is carrying full-time hours as the Hangar Receptionist. And has been working from home since the surgery. Tricia's sister from New Mexico came to be with them for the whole month of August. Dan Miller will be using heavy machinery to improve the sides of the JAARS Townsend runway that he was instrumental in helping to lengthen which has aided in their pilots' training. He has been able to participate in several MATA (Missions at the Airport) programs. And he continues his role as Airport Manager. What a joy it is for them to see young pilots come through their training here, and head out to their fields of service. Mark Spangler, heli-copter pilot from Cameroon will be staying with the Millers, from September 21-30 for Aviation Technical Conference.

11. For Bibleless people (contact asked that we do not use name) pray for language groups still lacking scripture and who live in areas where missionaries and the Gospel still are not welcome. Pray for God to open up doors and raise up appropriate people to take His Word to them.

12. Please pray for the choir and handbells as rehearsal for their 17th Annual Service of Nine Lessons and Carols begins Sunday, Sept. 10th. The service this year is Sunday, December 10th at 6 PM. Please put it on your calendar now! The choir and bells will be directed by Andy Chappell, who assisted with Tenebrae this year. He is a wonder-ful director, passionate about the music with emphasis on the spiritual nature of the words. Music is chosen carefully with
