Plant City Community Raises Over 1 Million for New UnitVisiting a hospital intensive care unit for the first time and seeing your loved one surrounded by high-tech monitoring equipment can be a daunting experience. The new Charles and Betty Grimes Critical Care Center at South Florida Baptist Hospital was designed to achieve a balance between the critical medical needs of seriously ill patients and an environment that is calm, serene and orderly.
In April, major donors to the Critical Care Center Capital Campaign got a sneak preview of the new unit during a reception and dinner held prior to the center’s opening. Dining tables were placed inside patient rooms and 911 Catering, the hospital’s catering service, provided a fantastic meal for the guests. Dessert was served in the spacious waiting room that provides ample space for large families, as well as a consultation room for physicians to meet with families as needed.
“It was a fun event and the first time the community was able to see the completed space so there was some excitement,” said Jana Butler, executive director of the SFBH Foundation.
Great Community SupportOver 1 million was raised for the new center, with long-time Plant City residents Betty and Charles Grimes providing the leadership gift.
“The Critical Care Center is another step in the development of our hospital becoming a major health care facility in central Florida,” said Betty Grimes. “My husband and I are pleased to have a part in this development.“

Mrs. Grimes also acknowledged the generosity of the many individuals, businesses and civic organizations in the Greater Plant City community who stepped forward to contribute to the campaign. “When you consider the number of donors to the Critical Care Center, it speaks volumes for the interest and support of the community for the hospital,” she said.
David Sullivan, the Critical Care Center Capital Campaign chairman, noted that South Florida Baptist Hospital is a source of tremendous community pride.
“The hospital is the heartbeat of our community,” said Sullivan. “I get a lot of personal satisfaction from working with the hospital, and I believe that people take pride in having their name associated with it. You can’t truly have a good quality of life without a health care facility in your own neighborhood, and we are fortunate to have a hospital of the caliber of South Florida Baptist Hospital.”
State-of-the-Art ICUThe new 5.2 million, 13,400-square-foot Critical Care Center features 17 large patient rooms, new monitoring equipment, a fully equipped conference room for consultations with the doctor, and a new design layout that allows the staff to keep patients in view at all times.
There is also direct elevator access from the Emergency Center to the Critical Care Center, making the transition time from when the patient first arrives at the hospital to the ICU just a matter of minutes. With a dedicated elevator, there is also greater privacy, as patients no longer need to be wheeled through the hospital to the unit.
“The new Critical Care Center represents a significant milestone for South Florida Baptist Hospital,” said Karen Kerr, SFBH president. “We have been looking forward to offering this important upgrade in service to our community for some time.”
According to Jana Butler, the capital campaign to raise funds for the new center was completed in record time, with the Foundation receiving major leadership gifts prior to February, and the balance coming within just 30 days. In total, 1,043,000 was raised. “The community support has been remarkable, especially in such a short period of time,” said Butler. “We are so appreciative of everyone’s generosity.”
A five-member capital campaign committee worked with the Foundation to plan and guide fundraising efforts. Committee members David Sullivan (chairman), Sylvia Knox, Bruce Rodwell, Rolly Rollyson and Ron Wetherington did a “fabulous job in volunteering their time to support this vital philanthropic project,” said Butler. “This was the first major capital campaign that I have organized since I joined the Foundation and I could not have done it without them.”
Karen Kerr, SFBH president, welcomes the major donor honorees and their guests.

Welcome New Foundation Board MembersThe South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation welcomes five new board members and recognizes W.A. Smith and Nylah Thompson who are retiring from their board positions. The new members of the Foundation Board of Directors are George Banning, Carmen Brownlee, Judy Martin, Sherrie Mueller and Rhett Rollyson.
“We are pleased to have such a strong group of new board members and grateful for W.A. Smith’s and Nylah Thompson’s service to the Foundation,” said Jana Butler, executive director of the SFBH Foundation.
W.A. Smith was a charter member of the Foundation and a past secretary-treasurer of the board. Nylah assisted with the SFBH Foundation scholarship program, as well as Foundation fundraising events, including Diamonds & Denim and Lights of Love.
Meet the New Board Members
George Banning is chair of the United Food Bank of Plant City Board of Directors, a Plant City YMCA board member, past president of the Plant City Daybreak Rotary Club and former district governor of Rotary District 6890 West Central Florida. George and his wife Cassandra own several Wendy’s restaurants in Lakeland. Cassandra heads up the SFBH therapy dog program, in which their dog, Bonnie, is an enthusiastic participant during weekly visits to patients and families. “A hospital is an important part of the quality of life of a community and I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve on the Foundation board,” said Banning.
Carmen Brownlee serves on the committee for the Plant City Rotary Club’s Dancing with the Locals fundraiser and for the Plant City Strawberry Festival Ball. Her husband Dennis owns the Florida Insurance Center and the couple is very involved in community activities. Carmen is also a physician’s relations liaison for Moffitt Cancer Center. “Our family has always
supported South Florida Baptist Hospital and both of my daughters were born there,” said Brownlee. “It’s wonderful to have an A-rated hospital so close to home.”
Judy Martin was the first full-time executive director of the SFBH Foundation. She built the organization from the ground-floor up and directed major capital campaigns to build the new Surgery Center, Emergency Center and Heart and Vascular Center. After her retirement in 2012, Judy worked part-time with the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation in south Hillsborough County while St. Joseph’s Hospital-South was being built. She is a long-time member of the Plant City Woman’s Club and a former member of the marketing department at Tampa Electric Company, where she worked for 32 years. “I am honored to join the Foundation board and looking forward to being involved with the hospital again,” said Martin.
Sherrie Mueller is a board member of the United Food Bank and the Bruton Memorial Library, a recipient of the YMCA Strong Leader award and an active volunteer with the Strawberry Festival dating back to when she was the 1971 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen. Sherrie recently retired as the college and career counselor at Plant City High School. “The hospital is something the community takes pride in,” said Mueller. “It’s also nice to be part of something that my family has been involved with for many years.” Sherrie’s father, Dr. Frank Chambers, was a charter physician in 1953. Both her sons were born at the hospital and she is a former chair of the Foundation’s Fall Fancy fundraising event.
Rhett Rollyson is an associate director of the Strawberry Festival Board of Directors, a former YMCA board chair and a member of the Plant City Little League Board of Directors. He is also vice president of sales for Rollyson Fearnow Insurance Company. Rhett is an avid sports fan, especially tennis, and is a top-ranked competitive tennis player in his age group. “For a city our size to have such a great hospital is something for all of us to feel good about,” said Rollyson. “I look forward to being part of an organization that does so much good for the community. I also am honored to join a board with so many community leaders I admire.”
The Foundation has raised more than 15 million since it was founded in 1995. Foundation board members are actively involved in the organization’s many programs. They serve on fundraising committees, reach out to the community to raise awareness about the hospital’s philanthropic needs, attend Foundation special events and guide financial objectives.
New board members from L to R: Rhett Rollyson, Carmen Brownlee, Judy Martin, Sherrie Mueller and George Banning

Patented space-age technology from NASA is helping patients at the SFBH Outpatient Rehabilitation Center recover faster with less pain and reduced risk of reinjury. The new anti-gravity treadmill has a pressure-controlled air chamber that can support up to 100 percent of a person’s body weight. The specialized equipment was purchased with funds provided by the SFBH Foundation.
“The machine is ideal for anyone with balance issues or people who have difficulty standing because it prevents them from falling,” said David Davenport, SFBH Rehab manager. “It’s also great for gait training for people recovering from stroke, a car accident or brain injury. Athletes can use it for sports conditioning. It’s also beneficial to people needing rehab after surgery on a hip, knee, ankle or foot. Patients step onto the treadmill and the support system is activated and zipped into place," said Davenport.
The support system acts like a bubble and holds the patient upright safely and comfortably.
According to the manufacturer, using the machine “is like walking on air” since it promotes a full range of motion while minimizing impact and stress on the body. The treadmill can be recalibrated for more or less weight bearing, which can help strengthen the muscles and bones as patients make progress in their recovery.
Until September of last year, the SFBH Rehab Center was located at the Ed and Myrtle Lou Swindle Medical Arts Center at Walden Lake. Pediatric rehab services remain there, but the adult rehab services have now relocated to a new, larger space across the street from the main hospital at 414 Plant Avenue, Plant City.
The program offers physical, occupational and speech therapy for people with orthopedic problems, neurological conditions, age-related health challenges and sports injuries.
