Go Corowa!
Last Friday, an excited team of students competed at the zone athletics carnival. Despite the rain and hail, our students personified our school values as they followed instructions and never gave up. Unfortunately, some of the events were not completed before the carnival was called off, but we will let you know when these events are rescheduled.
NAPLAN
This week our Year 3 and 5 students have completed their NAPLAN writing and reading tests. Testing will continue next week and if your child has been away, they will have the opportunity to complete them next Wednesday.
Speaking out
Students from our school have many opportunities to express themselves through speaking.
This week our public speakers began preparations for the Regional Multicultural Perspectives final, under the guidance of Mrs Creamer and experienced adjudicator Ann Ovens, who is volunteering her time to help them hone their impromptu speaking skills.
Our debating team is also learning how to write and present an argument. They have learnt importance of rebuttal and are getting quite skilled at pointing out flaws in other people’s arguments – they assure me they are practising on their parents! The team will compete in their first debate (against Albury Public School) very soon.
In the coming weeks, Year 3–6 children will show their spelling skills at the school Spelling Bee. The two best spellers from Years 3 & 4, and Years 5 & 6 will then represent our school at the regional competition. Spelling aloud is a great skill and we are looking forward to seeing our students in action.
Tournament of Minds
For the first time ever, Corowa Public School has entered the Tournament of Minds (a national competition that encourages problem solving and develops teamwork skills). A team of seven students will receive an ‘ongoing challenge’ at the beginning of Term 3 and will have six weeks to solve the problem, as well as creating a play to represent their solution.
On 31 August, the team will travel to Wagga Wagga to participate in the Riverina finals. On the day, they will complete a ‘spontaneous challenge’, which is a question or problem that they have to solve in 3-4 minutes.
The selection process involved setting challenges for potential team members to solve, under the guidance of Dr Joanne Bellette, principal of Corowa High School. As a very experienced team mentor, she has supervised many teams and attended many competitions. Our team will be announced next Tuesday!
Out and about in the community
Next week, all classes will walk to the town library to meet and listen to a published author who, among other types of texts, creates comic books. This is a free excursion, your children only need to return the permission to allow them to walk to the library. Year 5 and 6 students who are going to the zone cross country will attend on Thursday.
Woolworths has invited all of our classes to visit and participate in some exciting Fresh Food Discovery Tours to teach students about fruit and vegetables, waste food management and recycling. This is also a free excursion – watch out for the note, which will come out next week.
Bon voyage, Mr Cook!
On Saturday, Mr Cook is off on the adventure of a lifetime though South America and then he is off to sunny Spain. He will return to us in the second week of Term 3. While Mr Cook is absent, the Quokka class will be taught by Mrs Pirnag and Mr Creamer.

'trust', 'kindness' and 'love' on the leaves to represent the elements necessary for friendship to grow.

Walk Safely to School day at Corowa Public SchoolCorowa Public School will celebrate Walk Safely to School day on Thursday 30 May.
Parents are invited to join teacher and students as they walk from a variety of locations in the Corowa Township. Teachers will walk from Morris Park in South Corowa, the Corowa bakers in Sanger Street and from the Painter’s Café on Guy Street. Upon arrival at school, students are invited to partake in the school breakfast program, which is supported by the Corowa Lions Club.
Information on when to meet and supervising teachers will be available in next week’s newsletter and via facebook. In the lead up to this great school event, teachers will be talking to students about the importance of walking with supervision and the fact that children under ten should be holding an adults hand when crossing the road.

Corowa Public School will participate in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) on Wednesday 22 May
In this lead up to this great event, we have been studying other stories written by Matt Cosgrove that feature “Macca the Alpaca’ in the library.
NSS is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Kindergarten to Year 6. On this day, approximately one million students across Australia stop what they are doing to listen to the
same story. This year’s story is “Alpacas with Maracas” written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove.
DID YOU KNOW?
The original Flying Fox ties the knot!Did you know that Miss Moores got married during the school holidays? Congratulations and we wish you all the very best in your future together.
Miss Moores has changed her surname, so please remember to refer to her as Mrs Bowyer from now on!
One word projectsThis year, Bandicoot students undertaken a 'one word' project. Rather than making goals or resolutions to stick to,
they have chosen one word or quality to aspire to throughout the year!
