The Resilience Project

CPS staff will attend a professional development session in Wodonga this week where they will hear presenters from ‘The Resilience Project’. This session provides staff with strategies to help students develop resilience skills. One statistic suggests that one in four primary school students and one in three secondary school students lose sleep because of worry. This forum is very important to help us support all students at CPS.

Book Week

Next week, students will be talking about the powers that we gain through reading. ‘Reading Is My Secret Power’ is this year’s Book Week theme and we have a great day planned on Tuesday!

The day will begin with a parade, at 9.10 am under the primary COLA, to display your amazing costumes! Parents and family are welcome to attend. After the parade, students will return to their classes for their morning literacy time. At 2pm, classes will buddy up to spend the afternoon reading stories together and celebrating literacy.

Art Show

Our much anticipated Art Show will be on display this Tuesday in the school hall between 3-7pm. All art works are for sale, with purchases sent home later in the week. All art works are $10 each, except for skateboard decks which are $20. This is a major fundraiser for the school and students have shown great dedication to make sure they wow you with their developing art skills.

Mrs Creamer has been working tirelessly supporting and guiding students and we truly appreciate all of her hard work. We cannot wait to see you all there!

Attendance

As a school we all understand the importance of learning opportunities. We also know that missed opportunities can often result in gaps in understanding and overall development.

Due to many unexplained absences, we are focusing on attendance and stimulating student understanding towards the value of learning. If students are sick, we expect that they stay home and get better, however please send in a note and/or doctor’s certificate as soon as they return to school. If you are organising holidays, please be aware that you must contact the school prior to the holiday and apply for a school exemption, this is mandatory across all NSW schools. The most important thing to remember is… attendance matters.

Canteen

Unlike many schools across the Riverina, we are very lucky to have a canteen that is open daily at our school. To ensure we are able to continue to provide this service, we are consistently looking at ways to improve. This year, for the convenience of our parents, we introduced the online ordering system. A number of new programs will also be trialled soon, but we need the continued support of our school community to sustain the current opening hours of five days a week. So keep a look out for new and exciting things in the future from the canteen.

Citizens of the Week

Zach goes for gold!Congratulations to Zach Arnold on earning his PBL Gold Award! Zach is the first student to do so this year and was presented with his award at the school assembly on Monday.

Zach has set an outstanding example for his fellow students, consistently embodying our school values of Caring, Respect and Responsibility and we are very proud of his efforts.

Keep up the good work, Zach!

Congratulations also to all of the students who earned their PBL Bronze and Silver awards this week!

Platypus students tackle compound wordsIn their literacy sessions this week, Platypus students have been working on their understanding and use of compound words!

Once they master the use of compound words, such as 'and', 'but' and 'yet', students will be able to construct more complex and meaningful sentences.

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books, and Australian authors and illustrators. This year, Book Week will be held in Week 5 (19-23 August). Teachers and librarians will conduct activities relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.

In the library, we are busy reading and discussing the shortlisted books for 2019 and exploring the powers that we gain through reading.

On Tuesday 20 August, we will have a Book Week parade, starting at 9.10 am, under the primary cola. Parents and family are welcome to attend. Students are invited to dress up as a favourite book character or favourite super hero. The idea is to have fun and celebrate books, so costumes do not need to be expensive or elaborate. Many books feature characters who just wear ordinary clothes! However, it is expected that students can name

the book that their character comes from.

After the Book Week Parade students will return to their classes for their morning literacy time. Later in the day, each class will visit the school art show which promises to be an amazing display of student art.

At 2pm, classes will buddy up to spend the afternoon with their older or younger buddies, reading stories together and celebrating literacy.

Don’t forget the Art Show opens after school!

Thank you for your support,

Anna Brewster.
