Embroidery vs Screen PrintingCORPORATE CLOTHING

Screen printing and embroidery are two very different printing methods that are chosen based on your design, the size of the design, fabric and your preference depending on the use for your custom clothing. It is therefore important to understand the difference between the two methods. Screen printing exposes your design on a washed out (mesh) screen, which is then set up on a press with the blank material on it. Embroidery uses machines that sew your design with a needle and thread. To help you guide through the most suitable printing method, we ask you to consider: 1. what the use of these branded garments will be 2. the quantity of your order.

COST:So “which method is cheaper?” The answer depends on the complexity of the logo and the quantity of garments. In general, embroidery is cheaper for pocket size logos, particularly for smaller quantities (less than 100 garments) and for logos that have several colours.

The set-up cost for most embroidered logos is usually a flat fee and doesn’t vary based on the number of colours in your logo. The set-up cost for screen printing is colour dependent – a new mesh screen is required for each colour in your logo. And when screen printing logos onto coloured t-shirts, a “base print” is required – think of it as an undercoat – so for example, a white print on a black t-shirt requires 2 screens. Since the set-up cost for a typical embroidered logo is about the same as the cost for a single screen, embroidery is generally cheaper to set-up.

Exceptions are large logos because they can take tens of thousands of stitches to create. They take a lot more machine time and use more thread so that makes it a lot more expensive. Screen printing large designs and logos is cheaper.

EmbroideryEmbroidering on clothing is not as easy as screen printing on them since the needle is stitching through the material, which is why there are restrictions when using this method. Here is what you need to look out for :The more complex the logo or design the more difficult it becomes to embroider and the greater the risk that the quality will be compromised. The more solid the design is with less curves, the easier it is to embroider. For this reason, ONLY THE EMBROIDERY VERSION of the SU100 Endorsement Mark may be used:

The size of the design and font type are also important factors to consider. The smaller the design, the more difficult it is to embroider, therefore a minimum size of 70 mm (width) applies when the embroidery version of the SU100 Endorsement Mark is used. The plainer the font, the better it will embroider. Therefore only the University’s approved corporate font, Gill Sans, is allowed to be used for writing. A height of 5 mm is ideal for excellent quality.

SUITABILITY:The material has to be considerably strong for the fabric to hold when the needles are stitching through it. For business shirts and polo shirts embroidery is generally the best choice. Embroidery on these items is perceived as more prestigious. Embroidery is generally best for caps and outerwear too.

Minimum width: 70 mm

Screen PrintingScreen printing is a great process for larger order of printed garments (10+) and larger designs. Screen-printed clothing wash well and can maintain the print quality for some time.

When screen printing, one colour at a time is applied and therefore the cost will increase with each additional colour applied. For each separate colour an additional screen is required, so a design with 4 colours in it will need 4 screens, this can make screen printing in many colours uneconomical if only a small run of clothing is required and digital printing might be a cheaper option.

The SU Corporate Brand Mark at a minimum width of 100 mm can be applied when screen printing is used as production method:

Minimum width: 100 mm

SUITABILITY:For t-shirts and lightweight garments, screen printing is the best choice. Embroidery is often too “heavy” for t-shirts and you may notice “puckering” around the logo because the stitching creates tension. Screen printing has a “softer handle” than embroidery so it is much better for large logos and designs. And this suits t-shirts because they have a large decoration area on both the front and back. In Summary:• Screen printing is the best choice for t-shirts, hoodies

and large logos.• Embroidery is the best choice for business shirts, polo

shirts, caps and jackets.
