In 2002, Nu skin took action to address the tragedy of childhood hunger and developed the Nourish the children initiative. this innovative social enterprise* applies the rigor of successful business practices to provide a consistent and growing supply of nourishing food to the world’s most needy children.

the concept succeeds by selling a highly nutritious food—Vitameal®—and then helping people donate their purchases to third-party nonprofit organizations that specialize in distributing food to those suffering from malnutrition and famine. the result is more than 100,000 hungry children nourished every day.

VItAmEAl®: moRE thAN Just A mEAl

malnourished children are missing key ingredients in their diets which can hinder brain, bone, and immune system development. most humanitarian aid is grain, such as corn, which may lack certain essential nutrients for healthy development.

Working with experts in child malnutrition in third-world countries, Nu skin developed Vitameal to provide:

a balance of carbohydrates, protein, fat, and fiber essential fatty acids required for normal brain development,

skin health, and immune defense electrolytes necessary for maintaining normal fluid balance

and muscle function 25 essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin a

for normal sight and immune functions, as well as nutrients for normal growth and skeletal development*

Vitameal is vegetarian and non-dairy. Each Vitameal package contains 30 child-sized meals, or enough food to provide a child with one nutritious meal each day for a month.

25¢ from the sale of vitameal in the united states and canada is donated to the Force for Good Foundation to support mtalimanja village.

Vitameal is helping make a difference. According to uNIcEf, the World health organization, and the united Nations, malawi is among six nations where the rate of decline in child mortality has been much steeper than the global average. the number of children dying before their fifth birthday each year in these countries has fallen below nine million for the first time on record, decreasing to 8.8 million last year from 12.5 million in 1990. the most vertiginous drop in child mortality occurred in malawi.

In an effort to fight the AIds problem in malawi, the university of North carolina conducts a program to help hIV positive mothers wean children onto Vitameal at six months of age. this has resulted in a dramatic drop in the transmission of the disease. for children who do contract hIV, anti-retro viral medication works best when children receive proper nutrition, thus the need for Vitameal is great. In fact, some medications can only be taken on a full stomach and side effects are reduced through adequate nutrition.

Vitameal donations can have impact far beyond nutrition. Vitameal improves community health, draws children to school, and builds economic opportunity. the Kauma orphanage, home to more than

120 orphans, is one of the largest orphanages in malawi and has greatly benefited from regular donations of vitameal over the years.

since 2005, vitameal has been served to children at the Home of Hope orphanage. the orphanage founder expressed that vitameal has had a major impact on the health of the children.

Every month approximately 60,000 children receive nourishing Vitameal in malawi. the food is produced locally and provides hundreds of families with income—whether it is from a job at the Vitameal manufacturing facility or a market for farmers who sell their produce to make a corn and soy version of Vitameal.

this same model also exists in china. A modern plant in Jixi, china produces a rice and lentil ver-sion of Vitameal for distribution in Asia, providing economic support to residents in the rural farming community of Jixi.

Vitameal® donations are generally distributed through school programs, encouraging education, participation, and nutrition. parents living in poverty will often send their children to school for a free meal, rather than keep them home to work. this is especially true of girls. According to the World bank “there is no investment more effective for achieving development goals than educating girls.” Attendance at schools with a Vitameal distribution has significantly increased.

pu lihong, a 4-year-old girl from Jiange county yingcai Kindergarten, lives in a rural mountainous region and her parents often have to find work in other places. last year’s health examination showed that her growth was slow and she suffered from anemia, which are signs of malnutrition. after regularly eating vitameal, pu lihong is full of spirit and activity and her face is more radiant.

ashnefa abdul Karim, 7, is a first grade student in the philippines. she is one of 150 children who benefit from the community feeding program. considerable improvements have been noticed in ashnefa’s physical appearance and she has become more socially active.

30 Nu skIN coRpoRAtE socIAl REspoNsIbIlItY 2009 YEAR IN REVIEW 31

following the devastating earthquake in haiti on Jan. 12, 2010, the Nu skin family once again demonstrated its force for good culture with an outpouring of support for those affected by the tragedy. because of the generosity of our distributors, the company was able to facilitate donations of more than $1 million in cash and product, including more than 1.5 million servings of Vitameal® to the initial relief efforts. In addition, efforts are underway to provide long-term support to the people of haiti. the Nu skin force for good foundation is identifying a school rebuilding project and the company is continuing its ongoing donations of Vitameal to haiti. Also in 2010, we look forward to reaching our goal of 200 million meals donated through our Nourish the children initiative. While we mark the milestone in number of meals donated, the challenge is to never lose sight of what this means for hungry children around the world. Each additional Vitameal donation means one more child is nourished and able to claim a brighter future.

“this business is really all about people. our success has come by attracting more and more good people and, in turn, doing more and more good in people’s lives. it is when you help others that you go beyond making a living and find yourself truly accomplishing something of value. living a good life has little to do with making money and a lot to do with helping other people improve their lives as well.” blake m. roneycHairman nu sKin enterprises

“the driving force behind nu skin has always been, and will always be, improving people’s lives. this is the nu skin culture, and it is evident in everything we do, everything we are, and everything we strive to become.” steven J. lundvice cHairman nu sKin enterprises
