We are pleased to announce that the 39th IABSE Symposium will be held in Vancouver, Canada, from September 19 to 23, 2017. The International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) is a technical society whose members include many renowned and top level engineers from around the world. IABSE Symposia are always of excellent quality and well attended by people from all continents. Dr. Peter Taylor, a prominent local engineer and co-founder of Buckland & Taylor in North Vancouver, will be the Honorary Chair. The Symposium will be co-hosted by the the Canadian Group of IABSE and the Structural Engineers Association of British Columbia (SEABC), a local technical society with over 800 local and international members. SEABC has a strong record of hosting educational initiatives related to technical progress and professional practice.

The 2017 Symposium will be the first IABSE event held in North America since Chicago in 2008. We expect 650+ delegates for this high-quality conference ranging from local engineers to international industry leaders.

The Symposium will be held at The Westin Bayshore Hotel. This is a modern, state-of-the-art conference facility set in the spectacular downtown Vancouver waterfront.

The SymposiumThe 39th IABSE Symposium is a large international structural engineering conference bringing together professionals working on all aspects of structural engineering. The Symposium serves as an important event for stimulating industry discussion, exchange of cutting edge knowledge and networking. IABSE’s aim as a technical society is to promote the advancement of structural engineering practice while taking into account technical, economic, environmental, aesthetic and social aspects.

IABSE Symposia are annual events held each September and hosted in all parts of the world. The 3-day format of the Technical Symposium follows 2-days of the society’s annual meetings. Pre-Symposium workshops and technical tours are also offered. In recent years the number of delegates to the Technical Symposium has ranged between 550 and 1000. Recent IABSE Symposia were held in Chicago (2008), Bangkok (2009), Venice (2010), London (2011), Seoul (2012), Kolkata (2013), Madrid (2014) and Geneva (2015). The 2016 Symposium will be held in Stockholm, Sweden and the 2018 event is planned for Nantes, France.

The Symposium will be co-hosted by the Structural Engineers Association of British Columbia and the Canadian Group of IABSE. The 2017 Symposium will also be supported by the following international structural engineering organizations, further contributing to its success with increased exposure:

Consistently named one of the world’s most livable cities, Vancouver is an amazing conference destination. Surrounded by the sparkling Pacific Ocean and gorgeous Coast Mountains, the city’s natural environment is balanced with a cosmopolitan flair that includes exceptional global cuisine, easy walking access throughout downtown and an extensive seawall for strolling, running or a scenic bike ride.

The Vancouver International Airport has been named the best airport in North America for five consecutive years and offers excellent global connections with daily direct flights to most major centres in North America, Europe and Asia. It is only a 20-minute commute to the city core by either taxi or the Canada Line rapid transit route. There are over 400 kilometres of bike paths, easily accessible bus service and three fully automated rapid-transit lines servicing the downtown and surrounding metropolitan area.

Nature is never far in Vancouver and is reflected in the environmental consciousness of its citizens. The City has implemented sustainability- focussed policies with the stated goal to become the Greenest City by 2020. These environmental initiatives include efforts to double the number of green jobs and companies working in green industries, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote green transportation, reduce landfill waste, increase access to green space, improve air and water quality, reduce water consumption, and increase local food options.

The city is also known as an ideal starting point for pre- and post-conference tours, whether it be an Alaskan cruise, a trip through the Rocky Mountains or spending time at the wineries of the Okanagan Region. There are plentiful opportunities for shorter excursions in and around Vancouver, including the beautiful resort of Whistler with its wide array of outdoor adventures or the temperate rainforests on Vancouver Island.

Delegate ProfileAs an outstanding global event, we anticipate key influencers from the international structural engineering community to come to Vancouver for this Symposium. Recent IABSE Symposia have each attracted delegates from over 50 countries, in addition to strong participation from local and regional delegates.

The professional backgrounds of the past delegates have been design engineers, researchers, owners, fabricators, and suppliers. The Symposium will attract all experience levels from leading senior structural engineers and academics to young professionals and graduate students.

The event will combine Pre-Symposium Workshops, Plenary Sessions, Featured Concurrent Sessions, Contributed Papers, Discussion Rounds, and Industry Sessions. Opportunities also exist for Sponsor-hosted sessions, meetings and product demonstrations. All of our sessions will afford delegates the opportunity to engage, share and learn in a highly collaborative setting.

Symposium PromotionThe Symposium will be extensively promoted at the IABSE Symposia in Guangzhou (2016) and Stockholm (2016) by the honorary chair and the co-chairs. The Symposium will also be promoted by the honorary chair, the co-chairs, the entire Organizing Committee and IABSE representatives during their attendance at other global events over the next two years such as the bi-annual conventions of the American Concrete Institute, the International Wood Construction Conference, and the World Conference on Timber Engineering. Our partner organizations (IStructE, ASCE, CSCE, CAEE, APEGBC, SEABC) have broad global, North American and local membership bases and will actively promote the Symposium to assure its success.

IABSE heavily promotes each Symposium to their membership and ensures wide distribution of the call for scientific contributions. Advertising will

be provided through IABSE’s quarterly journal Structural Engineering International. The February 2017 issue of the journal is planned to include a special section focusing on structures in Vancouver and across Canada.

We will maintain a strong online presence to promote the Symposium through the Symposium website (www.iabse2017.org) and through social media initiatives. In addition, program updates on various association websites for Canadian and global structural engineering communities will be a vital part of our promotion as we confirm distinguished speakers and the scientific components of the event. Email communiqués to our global database on strategic dates will acquaint relevant professionals with elements that may influence their attendance at the Symposium. The call for papers and themed sessions for the Symposium will be broadly distributed to attract top calibre speakers amongst academics, industry practitioners and other members of the structural engineering community.

IABSE will hold its annual technical and administrative meetings in Vancouver in the days prior to the Symposium, which will encourage attendance at the Symposium itself. Plans are already underway to combine the Northwest Structural Engineering Associations’ annual meetings with the Symposium. Engagement with various local and international university programs in structural engineering will facilitate attendance by their students.

ExhibitionThe fees include a 2.4 m x 3.0 m (8’ x 10’) exhibit space and two (2) Exhibitor Passes giving access to the Exhibition and Symposium activities included in a general Delegate Registration (excluding events with additional charges).

EXHIBITION FEES

• $3,500 until December 15, 2016 – per exhibit booth • $4,000 after December 15, 2016 – per exhibit booth.

A 10% discount will be applied for exhibitors who rent two adjacent booths.

All Exhibition Fees are subject to prevailing taxes at the time of booking. Currently there is a General Sales Tax (GST) of 5% which will be applied to all Exhibition fees.
