CWS.indbCorps badges such as these were worn during the Civil War
on the top of a soldier’s forage cap (called a kepi), on the left
side of a hat, or on the front of their uniform. The idea is said
to have been conceived by Major General Philip Sheridan and was
quickly adopted by other units so soldiers could distinguish each
other on the battlefield. Badges were colored to distinguish
divisions within a corps (first division
