FAILURE TO LAUNCH: The Hooks have managed to score in only 3 frames during the last 3 games. During this time, Mid-land pitchers permitted 7 runs on 14 hits and 10 walks. Jon Singleton’s 3-run homer Friday night stands as Corpus Christi’s lone extra-base hit. The club has been held to 3 runs or less in 6 of its past 10 contests. Meanwhile, San Antonio has been tough on Hooks hitters, holding Corpus Christi to a .227 batting average and 3.4 runs per game. FALSE START: Before RHP Akeem Bostick ran into the fourth-inning road block last night, Corpus Christi’s starting staff had been on an impressive run. In the 4 games leading up to Sunday, LHP Alex Winkelman, RHP Franklin Perez, RHP Cy Sneed & LHP Framber Valdez teamed to post a 1.82 ERA (5 ER/24.2 IP). The quartet struck out 25 against 6 walks and 20 hits. MISSION CRITICAL: Corpus Christi heads into The Wolff with a 1.0 game lead in the TL South wildcard race. The Hooks trail San Antonio by 3.0 in the 2nd-half standings. The first-half champs have treated their I-37 rival rudely this season, taking 14 of the 19 meetings from Corpus Christi. The Hooks, 2-6 at The Wolff, are 47-41 against the rest of the Texas League. WALSH DEBUTS: Switch-hitting infielder Colin Walsh, recently signed by the Astros as a minor league free agent, is 1-for-6 with 2 walks and 1 run scored to begin his Hooks tenure. Walsh joins the Houston system after hitting .273 with 49 runs, 17 doubles, 11 home runs and 31 RBIs in 68 games for Double-A Jackson, Arizona’s Southern League affiliate. The former Mid-land RockHound enjoyed a torrid start to the season, batting .349 with 11 doubles, 5 home runs and 16 RBIs in 22 April con-tests. Walsh, who last appeared June 25, hit safely in 7 of his final 9 assignments with the Generals. Walsh, a 2015 Texas League All-Star, was a Rule V pick of Milwaukee, and played in 38 games for the Brewers last season. He was returned to Oakland in June, prompting a 59-game stint at Triple-A Nashville, where the 27-year-old batted .259 with 4 homers and 26 RBIs. In 2015, Walsh hit .302 with 39 doubles, 13 home runs, 49 RBIs, 17 steals and a .918 OPS, leading the RockHounds to a Tex-as League title. He paced the circuit in on-base average (.447), runs (97) and walks (124). Walsh also ranked among the league leaders in doubles (T-1st), total bases (2nd, 229), extra-base hits (T-2nd, 54), games (T-3rd, 134), batting average (4th), hits (4th, 147) and strikeouts (4th, 131). Walsh strung together a 17-game hit streak July 11-29, batting .439 with a .519 on-base percentage. He reached safely in 24 consecutive games August 5-September 1. Walsh was originally drafted by St. Louis in the 13th round in 2010 out of Stanford University. The San Diego, CA, native played in 32 games for Springfield in 2013. Walsh hit .287 in 25 contests for Midland the following year, earning a promotion to Nashville.
