STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION: June 18, 2017 - Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” 1 CORINTHIANS 10:17.

As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and invite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, being grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold purpose. One, it helps build God’s kingdom here on earth. Two, it is a road map to Heaven. Let’s help each other get there! WORD OF LIFE: “God uses creation to bring us into loving relationship with himself, most notably through the sacraments. We experience this most powerfully in the Eucharist, the true body and blood of Christ, received under the appearance of bread and wine, where ‘all that has been created finds its greatest exaltation’ (LS 236).” Serene Attentiveness to God’s Creation USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities www.goo.gl/xdm378

Everyone is encouraged to read the entire bulletin. There may be some information or events that you could be interested in any of the sections of this bulletin. Thank you! Please submit all bulletin announcements by Monday of every week for the upcoming weekend. You can mail it to the parish office or email to: [email protected].

Corpus Christi Sunday: Corpus Christi (literally “the Body of Christ” in Latin) is the traditional name for today’s solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. It is one of the 10 solemnities on the universal Church calendar. The traditional date for the celebration is on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday (last Sunday in case you forgot). However, it is a solemnity that is transferable to the nearest Sunday as it is in the United States. (It’s rather like Epiphany. Technically it is celebrated on January 6, the 12th day of Christmas, but in our country it is transferred to a Sunday.) Although the Eucharist was instituted on Holy Thursday, the Liturgy that day focuses more on the upcoming betrayal of Jesus by Judas and Jesus’ washing the feet of the apostles, giving them an example of humble service. Some centuries ago this feast developed to allow the faithful to contemplate more deeply the meaning of the gift of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and has traditionally accompanied by processions outdoors with the Blessed Sacrament in the monstrance culminating with Benediction. It is heartening to see the reemergence of such public processions. (See the note in today's Bulletin about the one between Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Peter’s.) The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that, “in the most Blessed Sacrament of the Eucharist ‘the body and blood, together with the soul and divinity, of our Lord Jesus Christ and, therefore the whole Christ is truly, really and substantially contained’” (Catechism, 1374). If we don’t believe the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Jesus, Who is God, then we shouldn’t trust the Church, which has always taught this. If we don’t trust the Church, we have little reason to believe the Bible, for the Bible was compiled, established, and interpreted by the Church. If we don’t believe in the Eucharist, the Church and her Bible, then we have no objective basis for believing in Christianity. We then exist in a subjective, new-age confusion or in the empty hopelessness of agnosticism. Instead, we must believe that the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of the Son of God.

Holy Ghost: A New Retaining Wall of landscaping blocks was recently installed along the east edge of the parking lot at along the area formerly bordered by the old school building. It is much more attractive and should be much more durable than the old one of railroad ties. Thank you to Jeff Belling and his crew for the professional installation. Costs were covered from the renovation account that took care of the demolition of the old building. St. Stanislaus Centennial Landscaping: Another gift of $100 was received last weekend and I contributed an additional $300 to the project which brings the total donations to $10,125. Work should begin on Monday, June 19 and take about two weeks if there are no interruptions due to rain or other circumstances. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: In the Book of Tobit in the Old Testament the Archangel Raphael said to Tobit and his son Tobiah, “Honor and proclaim God’s deeds, and do not be slack in praising Him … the works of God are to be declared and made known. Praise them with due honor. Do good, and evil will not find its way to you. Prayer and fasting are good, but better than either is almsgiving accompanied by righteousness. A little with righteousness is better than abundance with wickedness. It is better to give alms than to store up gold; for almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Those who regularly give alms shall enjoy a full life; but those habitually guilty of sin are their own worst enemies.” Peter’s Pence Collection: Next week, our second collection will be for Peter’s Pence, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Please be generous. we come before you today with humble hearts.

You are our model of a loving father. When we fail and fall short of your

expectations, you are always there at the end of the day with open arms,

Information “HOT SPOT”

History: ...after given the choices of

establishing either Holy Name, St. Margaret Mary’s or Holy Ghost Parish, the Augustinians consulted with a realtor (Mr. Fitzgerald) that because of the stock yards and other industry in South Omaha the city would

undoubtedly grow to the southwest. He recommended that they take Holy Ghost. On July 7, 1917 the Fathers established a mission in Ralston, NE by renting some property from C. M. Skinner. They felt it was most adaptable because it possessed a

large room that could be used for a chapel. The same day the Skinner residence was obtained, Fr. Gabriel, assisted by four Catholic men of Ralston headed by Alfred Adams, started to convert the hall into a

chapel in order to have it ready for the celebration of Holy Mass the following morning, Sunday. By midnight the job was done and on July 8, 1917, Fr. Gabriel celebrated the first Mass in the Ralston

chapel. Fr. Pacificus Kohnen OFM, pastor of St. Joseph’s, sent his choir to accompany the Mass at which 18 people were present. Holy Ghost Parish had officially begun. (To be continued)

Parish Memories: The Men’s club used to host an annual picnic for the members and their families on a summer Saturday night at the ballfield. The afternoon was full with

games for the kids, horseshoe matches, food and drink. Every year there was some kind of special entertainment planned. One I remember was the year the Men’s Club guys took part in a raucous game of Donkey

Softball. The rented donkeys were trained to make it impossible to play. Some bucked, some just stood still no matter what and some would go the opposite way you tried to get them to go. I will always remember the fun and laughs it provided for the crowd

watching the “boys” on those donkeys.
