College of the Sequoias is a public, two-year community college that offers educational and enrichment programs residents of Kings and Tulare counties, an area of more than 500,000 people. The district includes the Visalia, Tulare, Hanford, Exeter, Woodlake, Lindsay, Orosi, Farmersville, Alpaugh, Corcoran and Strathmore high school districts. Also attending are many students from outside the district boundaries. The college’s total enrollment for day and evening classes is approximately 12,100, of which about 30 percent are full-time students (12 or more units). An additional 4,100 students attend summer courses.

The college was established in 1925 as Visalia Junior College and was located on the old high school campus. The college moved to its present 56-acre site in 1940, and nine years later its name was changed to College of the Sequoias. To many familiar with the community college system in California, it is known simply as “COS”.

In addition to its primary campus in Visalia, the college offers courses at its Hanford Center, conducts an agriculture program on its college farms in Tulare and Visalia, and offers general education and vocational courses in communities throughout the district.

COS offers undergraduate classes in 10 separate divisions, and also houses several upper division courses in conjunction with California State University, Fresno.

The college is headed by Superintendent/President Dr. William Scroggins, who replaced Don Goodyear in June of 2006. Scroggins had most recently been President of Modesto Junior College.

Staff at the college includes 163 tenure-track faculty, 268 adjunct faculty, 161 classified staff and 28 administrators.

COS is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is one of 109 colleges in the California community college system, the nation’s largest system of higher education.

In athletics, the Giants have a rich and successful tradition. COS competed in the Valley Conference from 1962-80, the Central Valley Conference from 1980-88, and the Coast-Valley Conference from 1988-94.

The swimming teams currently compete in the Bay Valley Conference, the football team in the Northern California Football Association, and all other sports in the revived Central Valley Conference.

The college offers 18 intercollegiate sports. Men’s sports are football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, track and field, swimming/diving, golf and tennis. Women’s sports are volleyball, cross country, equestrian, soccer, basketball, softball, track and field, swimming/diving, and tennis.

COS teams have won state championships in men’s basketball (1953 and 1982), baseball (1957), golf (1967), football (1970), wrestling (1981 and 1984), women’s basketball (1987) and softball (1994).

In addition to regularly scheduled games, Giant teams host invitational tournaments in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball (two), and softball (two).

COS hosted the state championship football game in 2000, 2001 and 2004, drawing a crowd of 6,250 the first year. The college also hosted the state softball tournament in 1994 and the women’s basketball championships in 1990.

Head Coach Rusty Smith returns for his ninth season as Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball program after four successful seasons.

Hired just days before the school year started in 2001, Rusty guided the team to an overall record of 24-11 finishing third in the rugged Central Valley Conference with a record of 10-4. Year two saw

similar success as the team went 19-12 overall and 11-3 in conference, good enough for second behind eventual state runner-up, Fresno City. In the state playoffs that year, the Giants defeated Shasta College 84-64 at home before losing in the second round to Santa Rosa.

During the 2003 season it all came together in what would be a record-breaking year in COS’ illustrious basketball history. The team finished with an overall record of 28-3, advancing to the state’s Final Four in San Diego where the team lost a heartbeaker to eventual state champion Compton College. Along the way the team won all four pre-season tournaments in which they were entered, entered conference play at a perfect 13-0, and finished conference play at 12-2.

Coach Smith directed his 07-08 team to a impressive 22- 10 overall record, while finishing 8-4 in the Central Valley Conference. The team peaked at the right time resulting in an appearance in the California College’s Elite 8 before being eliminated to the ultimate State Champs, Citrus College.

The 6’7” Smith is no stranger to big-time college athletics. As a collegiate at El Camino College, he was a two-time all-conference player averaging 24 points a game as a sophomore. From there, he accepted a scholarship to attend Montana State where he led the conference in rebounding, was named team MVP, and selected to the all-conference team.

After college, he embarked on a seven-year professional basketball career in West Germany-five years in Aschaffenburg and two more seasons in Hamburg.

Upon his return to the states in 1983, Rusty began the first of seven years as an assistant at Northridge, helping guide the Matadors to a CCAA championship in 1985. It was there that he met and married his wife,

RUSTY SMITHHead Coach

Susan. He also finished his BA degree in Physical Education and earned his Master’s degree in Sports Psychology while at CSUN.

In 1990, Smith moved on to Eastern Washington, a Division I school, where he spent 5 seasons. While there, he had two articles published in The Basketball Bulletin, a publication of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

In 1995, he moved on to the University of California, Riverside as the top assistant to long-time coach John Masi.

In addition to his coaching duties, Smith is a full-time instructor in the Physical Education and Health division. Rusty and Susan live in Visalia and have four children, Jade, Perry, Allison and Kimberle Rose.

LeRohn Dodson returns for his fourth season with the Giants. He began his basketball playing career just down the highway at Tulare Western High School in 1988. As a four year Varsity starter, he was a 3-time all league selection, was named all-state his senior season,

and set 8 school records. He ranks among California’s All-Time 3 point leaders.

LeRohn moved on to Cal State Fullerton to team with Bruce Bowen (San Antonio Spurs) from 1991-1992 before returning home to play for Coach John Boragno from 1992-1994. He captained the Giants in his second season while averaging double digits per game. LeRohn went on to play at Eastern Washington University for then assistant coach Rusty Smith. With his BA in Sociology, emphasizing Juvenile Delinquency, he moved back home to work for the Tulare County Probation Department for four years.

LeRohn has since moved on and is no longer employed with the Probation Department. He is now employed by Gunther’s Sports of Visalia where he oversees Adidas teams sales among other responsibilities.
