with the existing footprint,” Jane says. They kept the front three rooms and renovated the rest – everything from new electrical wiring, plumbing, flooring, all interiors, paint and a completely new roof.

Through her business and her passion for interior design and styling, Jane has lived in many different styles of home, collecting pieces she loves along the way and constantly sourcing special items. Before she set up her own interiors business she even experienced working at Grand Hyatt Melbourne, Gandel Group of Companies and within the real estate and textile industries. Jane McPherson Interiors now specialises in residential design and small commercial projects, sourcing unique pieces and working on various projects with builders and architects, selecting paint

It’s through Jane McPherson’s efforts helping homeowners and businesses with organising and styling interiors and consulting on colour choices and property presentation that she continues to feed

her passion for beautifully designed and decorated homes.Jane grew up in Melbourne, lived in New Zealand and is now based

in Sydney with her husband Joe and daughters Audrey and Rose. Home interiors have always been a part of Jane’s life and the house the family now happily inhabits in inner-city Sydney was bought in 2012 with renovation plans in mind. “We lived here for a year to see how the house felt and to get a feel of the space. We wanted to swap rooms around and extend upstairs and ensure we utilised the best natural light

colours, carpets, tiles, surface products, lighting, furniture and accessories to complement the period and style a particular home. Jane’s design philosophy is explained as “Stay true and understand the client brief. Explore and use good materials to their best advantage and always offer design and decoration that is unique and special.”

AN ARTISTIC MIX“My inspiration comes from travel, holidays by the sea and a wonderful collection of interior design and architectural resources,” Jane says. “Working with interiors and colour is an opportunity to present a wide range of styles and design solutions to my clients. Sharing ideas and understanding the brief, using space, functionality and good materials to their best performance ensures a successful outcome”.

Those same design principles have been applied to Jane’s welcoming home, a house that reflects her description of her ‘signature’ look with “an eclectic mix of French, Hamptons and Asian influences”. Jane’s favourite rooms in her house are the living room and kitchen as they both have wonderful natural light and look out on the garden. The living area is a relaxing space with a mix of interesting textures, patterns and colours. The grouped sofas and wingback armchairs from Town & Country are upholstered in Westbury Stripe linen. An elegant yet practical natural wool and linen floor rug from International Flooring Company rests on the European Oak floorboards in Oslo, along with the graceful Herman Miller Noguchi coffee table. A large painting by Charlotte Wilson adds a further calming note.

DINING IN STYLEIn the all-white kitchen, elegant silver Egg pendant lights from Emac & Lawton illuminate the benchtops and splashback in Quantum Quartz in Luna White. To warm the look, walnut timber stools from The Stool Shop are placed in front of the kitchen bench. The flooring in the combined kitchen and dining area is concrete treated with a high-exposure grind that livens up the room’s classic look. “We weren’t sure about extending the oak floors into this area, and wanted to try concrete flooring,” Jane explains. “A concrete slab was laid, so we asked our builder to polish it with a semi-gloss finish.”

TOP RIGHT: Audrey’s bedroom in the front of the original part of the house has white plantation shutters from Versol and a bed with white linen from Bed Bath N’ Table.

Th e recycled timber dining table found at Inside Traders & Co is surrounded by a delightful group of mismatched vintage dining chairs painted in Dulux Sloane. “Joe and I wanted to create a semi-formal dining area within the open space of the kitchen,” says Jane. Th is was achieved by the inclusion of a handsome chandelier from OneWorld Collection along with a large timber arch mirror from Emac & Lawton. Th e dining table has candles and potted topiary from Beguiled Interiors in Balmain.

Th e dining, living and kitchen areas lead out into the courtyard through French doors, forming a seamless fl ow between indoors and out. Leafy plants grow against a backdrop of Dulux Quaker Grey on the weatherboard cladding. A Zara hanging pod chair from Equator Homewares, with orange/pink cushions made to order by Jane McPherson Interiors, is made for relaxing. Orange replica Tolix-style chairs from Matt Blatt provide colourful seating for the teak outdoor table from Jati. Th e decking is made from treated pine and stained in Feast Watson Grey deck stain.

RELAXED LIVINGStairs lead up to the main bedroom with a small landing halfway up, and here Jane included a feature wall of Porter’s Paints wallpaper from the Seaweed range, available on special order. In the master bedroom the bedhead in linen and natural oak is from Shack Interiors at Moore Park, while the cushions and bed linen are from Seneca Textiles. Th e armchair is from Town & Country in Westbury Linen and the whole room is peaceful and serene with 100 per cent wool San Juan Hycraft carpeting in Caribbean. Adding a punch of colour is a playful painting by artist Carly Casey.

Th e bedrooms for Audrey and Ruby are located in the original front part of the house and both rooms have been fi tted with white plantation shutters from Versol. Each of the girls has a double bed and white linen from Bed Bath N’ Table – with a fl oor rug from Temple & Webster for Audrey and a Dandelion Design fl oor rug from Armadillo Rugs for Ruby.

In Ruby’s bedroom, cushions from Seneca and Style My Home make the bed a comfy spot and there’s a world map from Blacklist hanging on the wall.

When it comes to her own home, it’s easy to see that Jane follows the advice she gives to her clients. “My best advice is to collect your favourite images and select a style. Don’t be afraid to choose items that you love. Take your time and work with your designer. Whether your home is large, small, rented or owned, it is always comforting to have beautiful and personal pieces surrounding you. Your favourite armchair upholstered in luxurious fabric, comfortable sofas, textured rugs, statement lighting and artworks.”

Advice from Jane McPherson

When styling your home, some rooms may only require decluttering or furniture repositioned with a few feature pieces added. I like to keep it simple but at the same time introduce interesting textures, patterns and

colour through accessories.

1 A replica of the Tolix chair designed by Xavier Pauchard, the Metz chair from Scots Emporium, $49, adds a stylish burst of colour in galvanised orange. 2 Soft white walls and ceilings make the ideal backdrop to an eclectic of decorating pieces. Dulux White Starlight half strength would create this effect. 3 eauti ul owers finish off a room, but if the fresh variety are hard to come by, why not enjoy the Peony and Iris wall-hanging, $41.99 from Wall Art Prints. 4 uitable or a endant, oor or table lamp, the distinctive Florence Broadhurst Japanese Floral handmade shade is a classic with personality. $290 from Stealing The Limelight. 5 Made from

hand-woven synthetic rattan, the Cocoon Hanging Chair, $599.40 from Rice Furniture, is right at home on a patio, balcony, porch or indoors area. 6 Classic style crosses all boundaries, which is why the Milton 2.5-seater sofa, $1574 from OZ Design Furniture, will hold its appeal for years to come. 7 Form and function meet with the replica Isamu Noguchi Coffee Table, $199.95 from Zanui – a classic piece that’s a welcome addition to any interior.
