Ten Tips For Drivers(NAPS)—Accord-ing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administra-tion, there are 5.25 million driving accidents a year in the U.S.—but they needn’t happen to you.

What You Can Do• Don’t use your smartphone while driving. Driv-ers talking on phones, hand-held or hands-free, can miss seeing up to half of their sur-roundings, such as pedestrians, bicy-clists, motorcyclists or other drivers.

• Drive “defen-sively.” Be aware of what drivers around you are doing. • Keep your eyes moving while you drive. Check all mirrors. • Leave at least two to four car lengths between your car and the one ahead, six or eight at night or in bad weather. • Obey all speed limits and signs.

• Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or if you are fatigued.

• Always wear your seat belt.

• Adjust all mirrors and seats properly before starting the car.

• Use turn signals, and ensure your lights are on at night and in bad weather. Make yourself visible with horn, lights and signals.

• Look out for the truck and bus “No-Zone.” Those driv-ers have big blind spots. If you can’t see the drivers in their rearview mir-rors, they can’t see you.

What Others Are Doing Many of the pro-fessionals who drive trucks, taxis, limousines and buses are recog-nized for their attention to safety. For example, the 127,000 small-package drivers at UPS are among the safest on the roads, logging more than 3 billion miles per year and deliver-ing nearly 5 billion packages annually. In fact, the compa-ny recently induct-ed 1,582 drivers into its elite “Circle of Honor,” rais-ing to 10,503 the number of drivers who haven’t had a preventable acci-dent for 25 years or more.

Collectively, these drivers logged 14 billion miles and achieved more than 257,195 years of safe driving throughout their careers. That’s enough to circle the equator 547,000 times, or make 206 round-trips to Mars.

Before ever mak-ing a delivery, all UPS drivers are taught safe driving methods through the company’s defensive driv-ing platform. The training continues throughout their ca-reers. The compa-ny’s UPS Integrad training school for delivery drivers, and Driver Trainer School (DTS)

for tractor-trailer instructors, boast some of the indus-try’s most rigorous safety training, with the most up-to-date technology, including virtual reality devices. The company even helps those it shares the road with stay safe,

through its UPS Road Code training for teens.

DIY Car Care Everyone Can Do

(Family Features) While taking your car to an auto service profes-sional is a great way to ensure its performance, the Car Care Council reminds vehicle owners there are few simple vehicle checks that they can easily learn and do themselves to save a little money and help keep their vehicles running efficiently all sum-mer long.

With basic knowl-edge of common maintenance prac-tices and a little

time, motorists can inspect the follow-ing components in their own drive-way:

* Check the tires, including tire pres-sure and tread. Un-even wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots.

* Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steer-ing and brake and transmission, as well as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze/coolant.

* Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of ex-cessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air con-ditioning, power steering and the cooling system.

* Check the wip-ers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper

blades. Keep the reservoir filled with windshield washer fluid.

* To keep the cool-ing system work-ing effectively, the coolant and dis-tilled water mix-ture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir. As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles.

* Check the gas cap to ensure it

is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evapo-rating.

* Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the out-side, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and

fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. The body of the vehicle should be washed using a product sold spe-cifically for cars. Wax your vehicle every six months.

5 Tips for Summer Road Trips(Family Features) For many people, summer means set-ting out on a road trip in search of bucket-list-worthy excitement or a relaxing vacation.

Whether you’re go-ing down the road to visit family or across the country to see a national monument, it is im-portant to prepare your vehicle – and its tires – before you pull out of the driveway.

These five safety tips can help get your family ready to hit the road this summer:

1. Check Your Tread – A tire’s tread depth can determine a vehi-cle’s safe stopping distance. You can check your tread depth by sticking a penny upside-down in a tread groove. If you can see President Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace your tires.

2. Ensure Proper Tire Pressure – Low tire pressure can lead to poor han-dling and gas mileage, excessive wear and overload-ing. Drivers should

check their tire pressure at least once a month, and especially before any long trip. Use a dependable air gauge or stop by an automotive store like Discount Tire or America’s Tire to take advantage of complimentary air checks.

3. Rotate Often – Tires should be rotated at least every 6,000 miles or earlier if irregular or uneven wear develops. 4. Inspect Your Trunk – Some new vehicles no longer come equipped with a spare tire, opting instead for tire inflation kits that feature puncture coating sealants and air compressors, or even run-flat tires. Check your trunk to see what your vehicle contains and make sure you have a roadside assistance plan should the need arise.

5. Don’t Over-load – The com-bination of heat and overloading a vehicle, which can be common dur-ing summer travel, is one of the most dangerous condi-

tions for a vehicle’s tires as overloaded tires can overheat and possibly fail.

When it comes to summer driving safety, it can be imperative to check your tires early and often. Knowing the condition of your tires can keep your family safe and your vehicle in quality condition.

“It is important that drivers know how to check and maintain their tires and recognize the warning signs of when to replace them, especially during the hotter months,” said Tom Williams, senior vice president at Discount Tire. “Keeping cus-tomers and their families safe is our No. 1 priority each summer.”

Your Brakes May Be Trying To Tell You Something

(NAPS)—If your brakes are trying to tell you some-thing, you should pay attention. A properly operat-ing brake system helps ensure safe vehicle control and operation and it should be checked immediately if you suspect any prob-lems.

“While an annual brake inspection

is a good way to ensure brake safety, motorists should not ignore signs that their brakes need attention,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Knowing the key warning signs that your brakes may need maintenance will go a long way toward keeping you and others safe on the road.”

What To Watch Out For

Motorists should look for the follow-ing warning signs that their brakes need to be inspect-ed:

• Noise: screech-ing, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.

• Pulling: vehicle

pulls to one side while braking.

• Low Pedal: brake pedal nearly touch-es the floor before engaging. • Hard Pedal: you must apply extreme pressure to the pedal before brakes engage.

• Grabbing: brakes grab at the slightest touch to the pedal.

• Vibration: brake pedal vibrates or pulses, even under normal braking conditions.

• Light: brake light is illuminated on your vehicle’s dashboard.Because brakes are a normal wear item on any ve-hicle, they will eventually need to be replaced. Fac-tors that can affect brake wear include driv-ing habits, operating condi-tions, vehicle type and the quality of the brake lining material. Be sure to avoid letting brakes get to the metal-to-metal point as that can mean expen-sive rotor or drum replacement.

The Car Care Council offers a free custom ser-vice schedule and e-mail reminder service to help car owners remem-ber to have their brakes in-spected and take good care of their vehicles. It’s an easy-to-use resource designed

to help motorists drive smart, save money and make informed deci-sions.

The Car Care Council is also the source of informa-tion for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer educa-tion campaign pro-moting the benefits

of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to con-sumers.

5 Easy Ways to Relax and Recharge on a Boat this Summer

(BPT) - Looking to get away from the daily grind this summer? The answer may be to leave your stress on land and take those summer plans on the water. Four in five Americans say being around water relaxes them, and 72 percent feel healthier after spending time on the water, accord-ing to a Discover Boating survey.

Americans are working longer hours, dealing with

stress and con-stantly connected to technology, with just 46 percent taking their full vacation time, ac-cording to Project Time Off’s 2017 study, The State of American Vacation.

One easy solution? Get on the water and go boating. Whether close to home or on vaca-tion, being on, in or near the water is good for you. In fact, the human brain consists of 75 percent water, so when you see or hear water it triggers the brain to react positively, according to Dr. Wallace J. Nichols, marine biologist and author of Blue Mind, a bestselling novel on the sci-entific connection between water and happiness.

What’s more, boating is more accessible than you

may think. In fact, more than 142 mil-lion Americans go boating each year, according to the National Marine Manufacturers As-sociation.

“Modern technol-ogy can make it more difficult to fully disconnect and relax, and boating is one of the few activities that can take you away from daily distractions to a place where you can reconnect with friends and fam-ily, relax and enjoy the outdoors,” says Carl Blackwell, president of Dis-cover Boating.

There are easy ways to get on the water, no mat-ter where you are or whether your interests lie in fish-ing, watersports, sailing, personal watercraft or sim-ply cruising with loved ones. Use

these five tips to help you find your way on the water this summer.

Join a boat club. Find a boat club near you to access a versatile fleet of boats. You’ll pay a monthly fee and be able to book your time on the water online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning and maintenance, with members responsible for fuel. Plus, most offer boat training courses as part of the membership.

Rent a boat. Rental op-tions are available on most waterways and provide hourly, daily or weekly ac-cess to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters give tuto-rials on operating a boat, share safety instructions and

Page 9: Country‘18 Cruzin

Peddler 731-644-9595 Page 9peddlerads.com May 31, 2018Our office hours are Monday-Friday 8am-5pm.

offer suggestions on destinations. Another rental op-tion new to market is peer-to-peer rentals, where you can locate boats online by enter-ing your zip code, allowing you to rent someone else’s boat, which usually includes insurance and captains for hire to help you set sail.

Charter a trip. Explore new waters and experience the boating lifestyle by chartering a boat trip with family or friends. Charter-ing offers several options - bareboat (with no captain) or

crewed (with cap-tain and crew), and can be as short as a few days or weeks long. Pick your preferences and get your feet wet.

Take a class. Sign up for a boating les-son to hone your powerboating, sail-ing or watersports skills by mastering the basics while having fun along the way. On-water training courses, watersports camps, youth boating pro-grams and more are offered across the U.S.

Float your own boat. Chart your own

course to boat own-ership by visiting DiscoverBoating.com, where you’ll find a boat selector and loan calculator tool to help deter-mine your budget and identify types of boats that fit your lifestyle. Once you’ve narrowed down your search, the site can connect you with manufac-turers whose boats best fit your needs and wants.

Get off the dock and climb aboard a boat this summer by using Discover-Boating.com’s Go Boating Today in-teractive tool - just enter your zip code to find boat clubs, rentals or charters close to home.

“There are easy ways to get on the water, no matter where you are or whether your interests lie in fishing, watersports, sailing, personal water-craft or simply cruising with loved ones.”

Get Fueled Up for Warmer Weather (NewsUSA) - It’s spring and that means it’s time to take your boats, lawnmowers, clas-sic cars and other summer gear out of the shed to get them ready for sun and fun! But before you hit the road, lawn or waves, it’s important to set aside some time for preventative maintenance to make sure your summer plans don’t stop short.

You’ll of course want to wash and wipe off the exteri-or of your summer

toys, but it’s very important not to skip maintenance of the internal workings of your vehicles.

Despite the famous saying, “what you can’t see can hurt you” this is where STA-BIL, America’s no.-1-selling and trusted ethanol treatment and fuel stabilizer brand, comes in. STA-BIL, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, helps consumers protect their cars, boats and small engines from the inside out,

keeping them run-ning at their peak year-round.

Since fuel can go bad in as few as 30 days, using a fuel stabilizer at each fill-up can increase power and fuel efficiency while helping clean and protect your engine from the potentially harsh side effects of ethanol-blended fuel.

Think of STA-BIL as the peacekeeper that helps the fuel and water in your engine play nicely, protecting your fuel

tank from corrosion and phase separa-tion.

As consumers prepare to take their equipment out of storage for the spring, two key aspects of en-gine maintenance should be top-of-mind:

* Function. Fuel-ing up at the pump is just one step in keeping your fuel tank running. Prod-ucts with a proven track record, such as the lineup of STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizers, are

specially formu-lated to treat each of your vehicles or equipment differ-ently, whether they are on the road, in the water, or in the backyard tool shed.

If you find yourself in a bind and your engine isn’t run-ning quite right, try cleaning it, but from the inside. STA-BIL Carb & Choke Cleaner is designed specifical-ly to help clean the engine by dissolv-ing gum and var-nish, as well as dirt and carbon deposits that keep engines from functioning at their peak. A clean engine starts more easily and runs more efficiently, which saves time and money.

* Protection. In-novations in small engine products have led to the de-velopment of pump protectors that keep components of gear- like pressure washers in good shape over long storage periods. The latest addition to the STA-BIL family, STA-BIL Pump Protector, also provides antifreeze protec-tion and serves as a lubricant and guardian against mineral deposit buildup, which can decrease the efficiency of your pressure washer.

If your gear tends to sit out exposed to the elements, protection against rust should be a

top priority. Look for a product that will protect ex-posed metals, like STA-BIL Rust Stopper, which is quick and easy to apply.

Internal parts need protection too, which is where a propelled oil, such as the STA-BIL Fogging Oil, can make a differ-ence. Fogging oil is designed to help displace moisture from engine parts, protect the com-ponents, as well as lubricate them for optimum function.

To learn more about how to keep warmer weather engines functioning at their peak, visit www.sta-bil.com.

Personalize your ride with a new set of wheels

(BPT) - The idea of a new car or truck is exciting. What’s even more exciting is making that new vehicle your own.

There are countless ways to personalize a vehicle, but one of the easiest ways to spruce up a ve-hicle is by adding a new set of wheels. In fact, wheels are typically the first thing vehicle own-ers upgrade on a car or truck after purchasing it from the dealership.

According to the Specialty Equip-ment Market As-

sociation (SEMA) in its 2017 Market Research Report, wheels are among the most purchased items by consumers in the $42 billion aftermarket indus-try. Because there are many wheel options, SEMA recommends researching the various wheel types available for your specific vehicle and learning about the different wheel finish options, each of which has its advantages and disadvantages to consider before buying.

Here are basics about wheel finish-es to keep in mind:

Painted: Opt-ing for painted wheels will give you an endless amount of options when it comes to colors and effects, allowing you to personalize your vehicle exactly how you desire. Painted wheels are typically primed before wet paint is applied, and they are finalized with a clear topcoat to protect the paint. To minimize dam-age or discoloration due to heat or dust brought about by daily use, painted

wheels should be cleaned with a non-acidic and non-abrasive soap that should not be allowed to dry onto the wheel.

Polished: Pol-ished wheels are great if you want a wheel with a shiny look or mirror-like finish that is not heavy, which could aid in fuel econo-my. The wheel is polished to a high luster by buffing it using a machine or by hand before being protected with a high-gloss clear coat. Polished wheels can be cleaned with mild soap and dried with

a microfiber towel, then coated and hand-polished with a non-abrasive wax to help it maintain its luster.

Chrome: If you want the shini-est look possible, opt for a chrome wheel. This popu-lar and classic type of wheel finish is achieved by adding layers of metals, such as copper, nickel and chro-mium, to create a very reflective finish. You can eas-ily clean chrome wheels with soap and water, then dry them with a soft cloth. To prevent dirt and dust from

Page 13: Country‘18 Cruzin

Peddler 731-644-9595 Page 13peddlerads.com May 31, 2018Our office is located at 512 North Market Street, Paris, TN 38242.sticking to the wheels, add a layer of wax after clean-ing them.

Powder-coated: For an extremely durable wheel finish that is resistant to scratch-es and fading and comes in many color options, go with a powder-coated wheel. To achieve this finish, a wheel is ground-ed and sprayed with a powder-coat (usually a polyes-ter or epoxy), then exposed to heat (usually in a heat-ing oven), essen-tially baking on the smooth finish. Like their painted coun-terparts, powder-coated wheels can be cleaned with a mild soap that should not be al-lowed to dry on the wheel finish. You can further protect the finish by apply-ing a wheel sealant or coating solution.

These are but a few of the many types of finishes avail-able in the wheel segment of the automotive after-market industry that can help give your vehicle an up-dated look. Every type of wheel finish provides variations in shine, color and required mainte-nance, so take the time to research what’s available. Regardless of the wheel you decide to go with, it will surely help get you

on the road to cre-ating a vehicle that meets your unique, individual needs.

Manufacturers introduce new wheels and many other products an-nually at the SEMA Show, the leading trade-only show for businesses in the automotive indus-try. Consumers can connect with some of these businesses at the official

SEMA Show after-party, also known as SEMA Ignited, where one-of-a-kind custom vehi-cle builds featuring the newest after-market products, including wheels, parade out of the convention center before making their way to the ultimate car show open to the public.
