Hopefully readers worked out two of our graphicswere transposed in Tuesday’s edition — our apologies.

Thanks to our Facebook friends who shared thecorrected graphic — and thanks for the comments.People are obviously concerned about this issue.

Here is the corrected information.

Turning left at the first exit? Signal left whenapproaching the roundabout.

Going straight through? Don’t signal as you approachthe roundabout, signal left as your pass the exit beforethe one you are taking.

Travelling more than half way around the roundabout?Signal right on approach, then signal left as your passthe exit before the one you are taking.

How about some factsOur old ‘friends’ KenGeorge and MalcolmHume can at timesserve a useful purposein challenging WaipaDistrict Council staff, counci l lors anddecisions.

But their opinionsare only worth readingwhen they are backedup with some worth-while data.

Mr George’s letter‘Report beggars belief’in the May 19 Editiondismisses an allegedly$600,000 report onwater amalgamation as‘rubbish.’

No analysis orinformed criticism.

Mr Hume’s letter inthe same issue, “Say noto cycling requests”says ‘there is no end in

sight of these bludgingcycle groups and theirfree hand outs.’

I f only thesegentlemen would pre-sent some reasonedargument in support oftheir opinions, theywould be worth thespace.

On Tuesday, May 19they both failed totally.

Think of us kidsMy name is Connor

Hill, I am a seniorstudent at Pekerau Prim-ary School and I do roadpatrol every Fridaymorning on Te RahuRoad.

I am really concernedabout the speed that a lotof drivers are going downTe Rahu Road when ourroad patrol is operating.

Pekerau School has a40km per hour sign andspeed limit before schooland after school when

there are lots of studentsaround.

When I am on roadpatrol, I see a lot ofvehicles going by ourschool. There would onlybe about 5-10 per cent ofall these vehicles goingby our school that followthe 40km/h rule.

Please think aboutthis next time you aredriving by any school, asthe rule is there to keepus kids safe.

More schools are taking up gardening as a way to stock the lunch tables, as well as teach – in that hands-on sort of way which children so enjoy – the many lessons from life and the curriculum that can be learned in the vege patch.

Gardening in schools is a positive trend which corporate donors are prepared to support. For example, The Fonterra Grass Roots Fund decision to provide two beehives to assist Epuni Primary School’s collaboration with the Common Unity Project in Lower Hutt.

This support is taking the school’s thriving 4000 sq m garden and “food forest” to a new level.

The bees will produce honey and help – through pollination – to increase

productivity of the large amount of food the school grows and feeds its pupils three times a week.

Let’s backtrack to consider remarkable changes at the low decile school, where gardening has made so many positive inroads into a community.

The day we called the children had just been served a healthy lunch of minestrone, costing near zero dollars to prepare, using many nutritious seasonal vegetables from the school’s massive garden. Produce included late tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, courgettes, pumpkins by the hundred and, of course, chillies.

We spoke to Julia Milne, founder of the award-winning Common Unity

Project. Julia explained how, beginning three years ago, staff, parents and members of the community joined forces to convert land including an old soccer field into the present community garden and food forest.

The Common Unity Project is an independent charity and this has been a three-year pilot project.

The concept of feeding kids with fresh fruit and vegetables was no hard sell. Parents lacking previous experience in gardening turned out only too willing to participate by supplying “sweat equity” – in other words, working the land.

Since the project began, useful vegetable gardens have spread to households who’d never grown their own food.

“Massive as our garden is, it was never intended to feed the entire community,” says Julia.

“So it’s lovely to see families digging up backyards and putting in gardens. Yes, of course that helps keep the grocery bill down but it’s also great for family life, shared memories and that sense of pride from harvesting your first cabbage or cauliflower.”

Families learned, for the first time, the simple processes of growing food, composting and waste systems and seed-saving, so that the cycle of producing food becomes simple, seasonal and cyclical.

Julia appreciates organisations

which feed children sent to school without lunches.

“But how much more powerful is it if the family learns how to, and takes a

pride in, providing much of that food for themselves and

sharing surplus with others?”Julia’s wish goes well beyond

providing honey for lunches. She’d like to see parents taking on exciting new skills which could include manufacturing hive components, or hands-on beekeeping. Looking for the opportunity for small social enterprise models to create employment around the focus of feeding our children is key.

60 years of wedding bliss

TC280515SP03A

DIAMOND couple David and Colleen (in her wedding dress) Cullen cutting theiranniversary cake at the open home on the weekend.

Today marks 60 yearsof wedded bliss for dia-mond couple, David andColleen Cullen.

The couple celebratedwith an open day at theirhome on Sunday.

They have four chil-dren, Sue, Christina,Michael and Kim, and 11grandchildren — and all ofthem (minus three grand-children) are having a‘family adventure’ to cel-ebrate — a special dinnerat the Railway Cafe atNational Park.

When interviewed attheir 50th anniversary, MrCullen said their secret toa long and happymarriage is that thehoneymoon isn’t over yet.

He said in 2005 ‘it willgo on for a while longeryet’ — and it has.

Mrs Cullen (neeAitken) grew up in TeAwamutu, attended TeAwamutu College and leftschool to work for Kellyand Bryant.

Mr Cullen grew up onthe family property atParawera.

The couple metthrough the MethodistChurch, which had astrong and active BibleClass and Youth Group, although Mr Cullenadmits having his eye onhis future bride from anearlier age.

He had left school to gofarming, but attended themusical Pirates ofPenzance being staged byTe Awamutu Collegestudents and admits to

being ‘wowed’ by the lead-ing lady, one ColleenAitken.

The couple’s relation-ship blossomed and theybecame engaged and madetheir wedding plans.

Mrs Cullen says sheleft work on 5/5/55 toprepare for the event.

They moved onto theCullen family farm, andonly shifted once morefrom one paddock (and theoriginal family home) to

another paddock (andtheir new home).

The Cullens raisedtheir four children on thefarm and now enjoy visitsfrom their children, theirspouses and grand-children.

As well as working onthe farm together, theyhave enjoyed dancing, tramping and travellingthe world.

They have convertedmuch of their property

into woodlots, withwalkways, ponds andspecial plantings, thatgives them a new goal andfocus, and somethingspecial to share withothers.■ Mr Cullen’s only siblingis his brother Garth. Lastyear, he and his wife Ruthalso celebrated their 60thDiamond Wedding — twobrothers and their wives, all from Te Awamutu, married for 120 years.

Worn out road faceliftWork to replace Alexandra

Street’s ‘worn out’ surface willbegin next week.

The work will involve dig-ging down around 160mm,taking off the top layer andreplacing it with high qualitypolymer asphalt.

Unless it is done, AlexandraStreet will not continue to copewith Te Awamutu’s high trafficvolumes, including trucks.

Around 450 meters of thestreet will be impacted by theroadworks, from the RewiStreet/Mutu Street roundaboutto the Arawata Street/SloaneStreet roundabout. Work will bedone in stages, around 100meters at a time and on one sideof the road only.

Road planning and designteam leader Paul Strange saidthe work will be staggered tominimise disruption to busi-nesses in Alexandra Street.

“To help, work will only bedone at night, beginning around7pm and ending around 6am,”he said.

“During the day, it will belargely back to normal although

it will be obvious road works areunderway.

“There will be still beparking available on the street, although the parking lines won’tbe reinstated until the job isfinished.

“With good weather, we’rehoping the whole job will onlytake around 10 days or so.”

While work is underway atnight, detours will be in placewith traffic diverted alongMahoe Street.

The road surface dug up fromAlexandra Street will berecycled and used to temporar-ily seal around two kilometres ofunsealed roads in the district.

While not a permanent solu-tion, it will help to keep the dustdown and will reduce theamount of maintenance needed.

The council has alreadyannounced plans to spend$500,000 a year sealing unsealedroads in the district. Thismeasure is in addition to thatwork.

The work in AlexandraStreet is being undertaken byDowner NZ.

Update details before the shiftDon’t put your liveli-

hood at risk when movingor selling stock over theGypsy Day period; makesure you call OSPRI toupdate your NAIT andTBfree details and recordall animal movements.

“This will help protectNew Zealand’s reputationas a producer of highquality, safe food andmaintain access to valu-able internationalmarkets,” said Dr StuHutchings, OSPRI GroupManager.

Up to date NAIT dataallows farmers to get backto business sooner in theevent of a biosecurityincursion or food safetyconcern and is alreadybeing used to containexisting animal diseaseslike bovine tuberculosis(TB).

“By keeping theirNAIT and TBfree detailsup to date farmers canhave peace of mind thatlivestock – not animal dis-ease – will be the onlything they move aroundthe country on GypsyDay,” said Dr Hutchings.

NAIT data is used totrace the movements ofpotentially infected stock, both on and off farm, sothe source of the diseasecan be identified andspecial TB testing pro-grammes established tocontain the infection.

As long as your contactdetails and location are upto date, OSPRI can callyou when your herd is duefor a TB test. Updatingyour details is quick and

easy and a pivotal part ofkeeping TB under control.

To protect your farmingbusiness, herd ownersshould follow these simplesteps when moving or sell-ing stock this Gypsy Day.• Update your contact detailswith OSPRI’s NAIT andTBfree programmes.• Check the TB status andtesting requirements of the

area into which you’re mov-ing cattle.• Correctly complete an ani-mal status declaration(ASD) form when shiftingstock and do not accept anyanimals onto your farm ifthey’re not accompanied bya correctly filled out ASDform.• If you’re in a movementcontrol area, all animals

must have a pre-movementTB test within 60 days ofbeing shifted off farm.• Record all animalmovements in the NAITsystem, includingmovements both off andonto the farm.

■ Farmers can complete all ofthese steps by simply callingOSPRI on 0800 482 463.

Taringa means ear in Maori, and taringa is this week’s kupu.Taringa is a good kupu to know, as you can use it in day-to-dayconversation, and like in the English language, there’s manyexpressions about taringa, such as taringa kohatu (stone ears),which means someone who might hear something, but does notnecessarily listen.• Don’t forget to horoi behind your taringa.• I told him to taihoa, but in went in one taringa, and out the other.• She can play any song on the ukurere, just by taringa.• Homai o taringa (give me your ears – listen to me).

Share this kupu with your whanau, or friends, and hopefully theyuse their taringa when you tell them.

Native wildlife draws crowds

TC280515SP08A

WILDLIFE: North Island robin pictured on Kakepuku Mountain.

Kakepuku Mountain is apopular destination for dozensof runners and walkers alike, who climb its 449 metres forfitness, often trying to do sofaster each time.

The relatively new viewingplatform and information panelsat the summit make it an inter-esting place for families andothers to visit, maybe at amore leisurely pace.

In the last twelve months, over 11,000 people enjoyedthe views and indigenousforest.

It is also home to nativebirds.

North Island robin can beheard if not seen, along withthe more common fantail, tui, kereru, grey warbler andthe endangered New Zealandfalcon is present.

The bush includes adiversity of species and at thistime of year rata can be seen inflower.

The health of the bush and itsbirdlife is down, to the work of asmall group of volunteers who

for twenty years havemaintained a programme of pestcontrol and monitoring.

There are 212 bait stationslaid out on the mountain andnow fewer volunteers to look

after the bait lines. They urgently need some

new recruits to share theworkload.

A certain level of fitness isnecessary to do the work, whichinvolves carrying bait to andfrom the bait stations; a task

which has to be done on two orthree occasions in the earlyspring.■ If you think you could helpthe group, please contact JanHoverd (871 8071), Sue Barton(871 2813) or email Alison [email protected]

FINLAND bound Delwyn Evans pictured with her trophyand medals from her triumphant foray at the AsiaOceania Powerlifting Championships in Melbourne.

KAY GREGAN PHOTO

Te Awamutu bench pressspecialist Delwyn Evansflies out for Finland onSunday to compete at theWorld Raw PowerliftingChampionships.

The 51-year-old is a mem-ber of the nine-strong NewZealand team set to flex theirmuscles in Helsinki, thecapital of Finland, fromJune 5-12.

Evans will make herworld championship debutnext Friday, June 5, whenshe contests the Masters50-59 age group’s under 72kgthree-lift event (squat, benchpress, deadlift).

The Health 2000employee is fresh fromtaking out ‘Best OverallMasters 2 Bench PressLifter’ (all weight categories)at the Asia Oceania Cham-pionships in Melbourne -upstaging all the Asian andAustralian competitors - andwinning the WaikatoBenchpress Championshipat Te Aroha. She also placedsecond in both the squat anddeadlift in Melbourne.

Evans says she is nowlooking forward to makingthe most of a ‘chance of alifetime’ to represent hercountry at the highest level.

“It’s my journey, my lift,my first time on the worldscene and I’ve got to makethe most of it.”

Although wary of notputting any undue pressureon herself, she says a 70kgbench press lift would puther in bronze medal conten-tion.

It’s a weight that she has

been achieving in trainingat Zero Limits with herpersonal trainer/coachTony Thomson. She alsolifted 70kg at Te Aroha.

Evans says she would behappy with a 90kg squat anda 125kg deadlift in Helsinki -both of which would be PBs.She has nailed a 125kgdeadlift in the gym but notin competition.

When questioned on herlikely toughest competition, she singled out all the Euro-pean block countries butstated: “I’m not worryingabout what any of my rivalsare doing, I’m fully focusedon my own build-up to thebig day.

“I’m injury free and inthe best possible frame of

mind I could be in headinginto a world championshipthanks to my sports psycho-logist David Galbraith.”

Galbraith told her toenjoy the moment and suc-cess would be a bi-product ofthat enjoyment; not to worryabout what people think, just focus on the job at handin order to get goose bumpsof a Pure Steinlagermoment.

The Te Awamutustrongwoman has wonnumerous Waikato, NorthIsland, National andOceania bench press titles inan illustrious career.

A world championshipmedal in Helsinki would bethe coup de grace to herwonderful CV.

Are you right at home?As you approach retirement age, one

of the biggest decisions you face isaround housing — whether to quit the

family home, run away on a yacht, escape tothe country, move to a townhouse, or buy anapartment or villa in a retirement village.

The latter is certainly the most commonoption, but it causes great anxiety for seniorsand their families, so arming yourself with asmuch accurate information as possible isessential.

Many questions are best discussed firstwith your lawyer and accountant, butalthough they are well-placed to advise onfinancial and legal issues, you are the onlyperson who can decide what will suit yourpersonal needs.SOME QUESTIONS TO ASKWHEN CONSIDERINGRETIREMENT VILLAGE LIFE:■ Do you want to remain in the same area?■ Will the unit or villa suit your space andprivacy needs?■Does the village feel the right size — not solarge that you feel swallowed up, not sosmall that it’s claustrophobic?■ Is their transport for shopping etc?■ Can you do whatever you do in your ownhome — such as redecorating or plantingtrees — here?■ Can your friends and relations who visityou use the village’s facilities, like the pooland library?■Do you feel you will be able to be part of thebroader community, or does the village feelisolated?

■ Are the other residents of similar age toyou?■ Is there a residents’ committee that workswith management?■ What are the rules about pets?■ If you want to take a long holiday away, can you sub-let?■ Will you be able to continue living there ifyour health or mobility declines?WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR INREST-HOME CARE:■ Are there enough staff to make you feelsafe?■ What level of professional nursing care willyou need?■ How many qualified nurses are on duty ata time and is the number enough?■ Are there enough emergency buttons?■How regularly do doctors visit, and are theyon-site or on call?QUESTIONS ABOUT COSTS:■ What will you have to pay on entry?■ What regular expenses are there?■ When and how are fees increased?■ What does the monthly maintenance feecover?■Will you share in any capital gain when youleave?■ Will you have to pay for any capital loss?■ What will you lose if you want out after acouple of years?■ What happens to your unit when you die?■ Can you leave your unit to someone inyour will?■ Will there be any fixed costs forrefurbishing the unit if it is to be resold?

Rotorua thrilled byChiefs’ performance

Rotorua turned out in forceto support the Chiefs and theydidn’t disappoint with a thrill-ing 34-20 victory over theBulls on Friday night.

Captain Liam Messamwas rapt with the way his teamplayed in his home town andthe fantastic, enthusiasticcrowd of nearly 14,000 fansfilling Rotorua InternationalPark.

In the rugby story of theyear, lock Ross Filipo cameout of retirement to answer theSOS call from the Chiefs andplayed his best match for thefranchise.

“Last week I was eatingpizza and drinking a beerwatching the Chiefs againstthe Hurricanes thinking howfast the game was and thenext week I am playing,” saida stunned Filipo who wassupposed to work as part ofthe SKY commentary team for

the match.“I thought I would be good

for 40 but I looked up on theclock and it was at 70minutes.”

Filipo might get anotherrun next week with fifth lockJohan Bardoul ruled out forthe remainder of the seasonafter rupturing the medial liga-ment in his right knee duringthe match.

Impressive hal fbackAugustine Pulu was electricand scored two tries withinthree minutes after his firstattempt was denied.

Damian McKenzie provedonce again that he is unpre-dictable and a real handful forthe opposition, racking up 149running metres as well asmaking the most carries forthe Chiefs.

The Chiefs head to Inver-cargill this weekend to playthe Highlanders (Saturday,

7.35pm) who only sit one pointbehind them on the table. It isa crucial match in determiningwho will be one step closer tothe play-offs. Both teams sitahead of the nearest Austra-lian and South African confer-ence leaders.

Two of the panel of tipstersmanaged a perfect 7/7 inweek 15 of the Courier’sSuper 15 competition, ChrisGrenfell (Edmonds Judd) andChris Bowman (ManukaHealth).

Grenfell now has the out-right lead with a 72 % successrate, from Lance Fielder(Gyde Wansbone, 6/7) on71% Scott Hill (Bowers Con-crete, 6/7) 70% and DwightHarvey (Superliquor, 6/7)70%.

Bowman is the big mover, rocketing from a lowly 53%after week six to 68% and ashare of fifth place.

CAPTAIN fantastic Dane Vickers leads his triumphant Te AwamutuSports hockey team on a victory lap after beating Suburbs in theWaikato premier men’s championship final at Gallagher Park, InnesCommon on Saturday.

Te Awamutu Sports men’shockey team created history win-ning the Waikato premier cham-pionship for the first time in theclub’s 25 years of existence.

In a fairytale end to the finalon Saturday, Ecolab Te Awa-mutu Sports scored the match-winner in their thrilling 2-1 winover Suburbs with 30 seconds lefton the clock — sending theplayers and their supporterswild at Gallagher Park, InnesCommon.

“We’ve gone from getting lastto first in the space of a year,”said jubilant captain, DaneVickers.

There was drama aplenty atthe business end of the game.

With the scores locked at 1-1and Suburbs’ keeper Dean Arm-strong thwarting every attempton goal, frustrations began tocreep in and a green card saw TeAwamutu a man down for twominutes just as the game waslooking like going into extratime.

Scott Armer and vice-captainRhys McLachlan rallied Te Awa-mutu’s defence, absorbing theensuing Suburbs’ onslaught

until they had 11 men back on thefield.

Then, with time almost up,came the ‘clutch moment’ of thegame.

Vickers ruthlessly drove theball into the circle past severaldefenders, finding his target ofstriker Patrick Wilson’s stickwho flipped it past Armstronginto goal, completing his double, and sealing the win for Te Awa-mutu, as well as the ‘player of theday’ trophy.

Hockey has been a part of TeAwamutu Sports Rugby &Recreation Club since its incep-tion in 1990.

However, the club has onlyhad a men’s team in the Waikatopremier grade since 2009, anduntil this year had struggled atthe bottom of the premier div-ision.

No-one was more delightedwith the championship win thanMatt Scoble who has coached theside for the past five years.

In recent years he hasfocussed on a younger side thathe’s managed to keep togetherand groom over this time.

There was a hint of their‘coming of age’ late last yearwhen they won Waikato

Hockey’s inaugural nine-a-sidecompetition over other seasonedHamilton teams.

But the side’s ultimate goalhas always been to featureprominently in the 11-a-sidegame.

“Most of these boys had neverbeen in a premier team environ-ment before coming here, sothey’ve had to learn how to trainand prepare like a premier side,”said Scoble.

“Winning the nines at the endof last year taught the boys howto win . . . and this year they’velearnt how to fight right to theend.”

Prospects initially lookedgrim for the final with rainthreatening to stifle the fast, open style of hockey that TeAwamutu’s youthful side revelsin.

Suburbs were first to find theback of the net after 25 minuteswhen an unmarked AaronBarnsdall broke behind Te Awa-mutu’s defence and crossed a‘screamer’ to Estian Hattinghwho tipped it in past keeper ScottArmer.

Te Awamutu replied nineminutes later when second phaseplay, from a penalty corner, saw

Wilson rifle a shot from an acuteangle across goal and off the padsof Armstrong into the backboard

for a 1-1 halftime scoreline —setting up the drama-filledsecond half.
