This handbook contains important information necessary for your course registration at Keio University. As a Short-term International Student in the Keio International Program (hereafter “KIP student”), you can design your program on your own. Please read through this handbook carefully to understand the various procedures before you complete your registration. KIP students are affiliated with the International Center, or, in some cases, with an undergraduate faculty. The status of “Short-term International Student ” is granted.

Students are solely responsible for understanding and completing their course registration process. There is no late registration, and reminders will not be sent to students who fail to complete the registration process.

COURSE REGISTRATION

- KIP students must take a minimum of seven courses. KIP students may include up to four Japanese languagecourses each semester.*One 4-credit course is considered as 2 courses. For example, “Passport Members’ Workshop D” is counted as 2courses.

- KIP students can take courses from any combination of International Center Courses, Independent Study, ProfessionalCareer Programme (PCP) Courses, Global Passport Program (GPP) Courses, Undergraduate Faculty / Graduate SchoolCourses, and Japanese Language Courses. For the details of each courses, please refer to “COURSE INFORMATION”section.

- Write all the courses you plan to take on a Course Registration Form for KIP students and submit it to the Office ofStudent Services during the KIP Course Registration Period.

- Some courses require the instructor’s signature of approval on the Course Registration Form.

- Sample E: KIP students can only take up to four Japanese language courses each semester.- Sample G: KIP students are required to take a minimum of seven courses each semester.

NOTE

- Students can register for a course that they did not put on their study proposal or vice versa.- Students cannot register for 2 or more courses offered at the same time on the same day.- Students cannot take courses back-to-back, one class on the Hiyoshi, Yagami, or SFC Campus and the next class on theMita Campus, or vice versa. Students need around an hour to move between Hiyoshi, Yagami, or SFC, and MitaCampuses. However, attending second period on one Campus and third period on the other would be possible sincethere is a lunch break in between.

- Course registration is not accepted online or via e-mail. Fill out the specified Course Registration Form and submit it tothe International Exchange Services Group in the Office of Student Services during the Course Registration Period.

- For "intensive" courses, cancellation is accepted until the day after the first day of class (excluding Saturday, Sundayand holidays) at the Office of Student Services (International Exchange Services Group).

- The curriculum of the International Center Courses focuses on Japan and East/Southeast Asia as a central theme.

Course Restrictions- Courses only open to graduate-level students *Undergraduate students cannot register for them.

Registration Procedure Write the five-digit Course Registration Number and submit a “Course Registration Form for KIP Students” to the Office of Student Services during KIP Course Registration Period.

Modification of Registration

- To change, add, or cancel courses after course registration, students must submit a “Course Change Form” to the Officeof Student Services by the end of the Course Registration Confirmation and Modification Period.

- A “Course Change Form” is available at the Office of Student Services (International Exchange Services Group).- When adding a course, you must obtain the instructor's permission. In addition, please make sure to ask the instructor toadd you to the course roster.

Bulletin Board

Important information regarding the International Center Courses (classroom changes, exams, exam location, etc.) will be posted on the International Center’s bulletin board at the West School Building on Mita Campus and on the International Center website. Independent Studyaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaa

aBasic Information

The Independent Study enables students to conduct research on a topic of their choice under the guidance of a supervisor who is an academic faculty member of Keio University. This usually involves meetings between the student and the academic faculty member. Students will be required to submit a substantial piece of written work that reports the results of their research to their supervisors.

*PCP also offers "Independent Study" course (see PCP course list). Please note that this is different to the IndependentStudy offered by the International Center (the course content and registration procedures are entirely different.)

Notes

- Students are responsible for finding a full-time academic faculty member at Keio University who is willing to becometheir supervisor for the proposed research. The supervisor must be a FULL-TIME academic faculty member at Keio.

- Students may register for only one Independent Study course per semester.

Prerequisites - Introductory Microeconomics (undergraduate level)- Introductory Macroeconomics (undergraduate level)- Introductory Statistics (undergraduate level) or the equivalent.*Official transcripts that include the courses equivalent to the above must be submitted at the time of courseregistration.

Academic writing course In order to register for "Finance, Policy and the Global Economy" and/or "Independent Study”, you must have taken an academic writing course at your home university. If you have not, registering for "Academic Writing" by Prof. Nakatsugawa at Keio University in the spring semester is required. If your first semester at Keio is the fall semester and you have not taken an academic writing course at your home university, please consult the Office of Student Services (International Exchange Services Group).

PCP Certificate A PCP Certificate is awarded to short-term international students and Japanese Language Program students who earn credits for 10 PCP classes. The 10 classes must include "Finance, Policy and the Global Economy" and "Independent Study". If students can convince the Faculty of Economics that contents of the course they took at their home university is equivalent to the contents of a PCP course, PCP may count the credit for such a class towards the PCP certificate. Write the five-digit Course Registration Number printed on the Orange Handbook and submit a “Course Registration Form for KIP Students” to the Office of Student Services during KIP Course Registration Period.

Modification of Registration

Global Passport Program (GPP) Coursesa aaaa aaaaaaaa

Basic Information

- The Global Passport Program (GPP) courses are offered by the Faculty and the Graduate School of Business andCommerce.

- The GPP offers students the opportunity to enroll in courses with a high degree of specialized content. In particular,students can cross-register for introductory level courses in the graduate school. Such classes will focus upon the topicsof management, accounting, commerce, economics, and industrialization. By enrolling in these courses, students willincrease both their practical and theoretical knowledge base. The majority of coursework will be in the form ofdiscussions and presentations in classes with limited size, thus providing a highly stimulating environment for theenrollees.

- Some courses may limit the number of students or require prior knowledge of statistics and/or economics.- “Passport Members’ Workshop D”The participants of "Passport Members’ Workshop D" will learn to integrate practical experience with theoreticalknowledge. To accomplish this task, real world problems will serve as case studies with which students can developthese skills and investigate complex issues. All activities are led by outside experts in international business. In this waywe hope to develop the students' skills in adaptation, communication, and leadership so that they can cope with diverseworking environments.

- Most of the Undergraduate Faculty / Graduate School courses are conducted in Japanese.- KIP students who have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT level N2 or above may take UndergraduateFaculty / Graduate School courses open to exchange students. The number of courses you can take depends on yourJapanese language proficiency level.

- The students who wish to take the courses conducted in English are not required to have the above mentioned Japaneselanguage proficiency.

Eligibility

- Students who have passed the JLPT N1 or N2, or- Students who have the Japanese ability equivalent to the JLPT N1 or N2, or- Students who have been placed into Advanced or Higher Advanced study levels on the Japanese LanguageProgram Placement Test held at Keio.

Keio Japanese Courses (KJC / Japanese language courses)aa a

Basic Information

- KIP students can take up to four Japanese language courses offered by the Center for Japanese Studies per semester.- These courses include 7 study levels from elementary to advanced, in which students can effectively learn the Japaneselanguage in a short period of time and balance their studies in Japanese language with other courses.

Auditing Period (April 7 (Sat) – April 13 (Fri)) - The auditing period is to allow students to check out the course content and see whether the course suits their studylevel before the course registration period. Make sure to attend the classes you wish to register.

- Course instructors will give an in-class guidance session. The syllabus and course materials will also be distributed.

Registration Procedure

- Write the five-digit registration number printed on the Course Registration Handbook for Keio Japanese Courses andsubmit it to the Office of Student Services during the KIP Course Registration Period.

- Please submit a “Course Registration Form for KIP Students” to the Office of Student Services.- Signatures from the instructors are not required to register for the courses during the KIP Course Registration Period.

- More advanced level than Level K7 in KJC is Japanese Language Program (JLP) Level 7, 8,and 9.- For registering for JLP Level 7, 8 and 9, students must take JLP Placement Test and be placed into Advanced orHigher Advanced study levels and must pass the in-class level check test.

- Students who are not JLP student may not be able to take courses that are already full since priority is given to full-timeJLP students.

(2) Japanese Studies on Society and CultureThese courses are recommended for students who have Japanese language proficiency equivalent to JLPT-N2 orabove. Students who wish to register these courses do not need to take the placement test. However, attending thefirst class is required.

Textbooks

- Textbooks for most courses are available at the University Co-op Bookstore at Mita Campus from May 8 (Tue) - May15 (Tue).

- For some courses, students can receive a textbook coupon from the Office of Student Services, which they canexchange for a textbook at no cost. Please come to the Office of Student Services to collect your textbookcoupon from May 8 (Tue) - May 15 (Tue) 11:00am. Students must present their coupon at the University Co-opBookstore at Mita Campus druing the period above.

- After the period, you will no longer be able to receive textbooks at the University Co-op Bookstore or use yourtextbook coupon.

Bulletin Boards Notices of class cancellations and makeup classes will be posted on the Academic Affairs Web System website. Other important information regarding courses (time changes, classroom changes, exams, exam location, etc.) will be announced in class or posted on the JLP bulletin board located at the Office of Student Services (Japanese Language Program) on Mita Campus (Information regarding courses held on Hiyoshi Campus will be posted on the bulletin board of the Office of Student Services (International) at Hiyoshi Campus.). CREDITS

CREDIT CONVERSION SCALE

There is no conversion scale available between credits at Keio and ECTS.

GRADING SCALE

The grades for a course are determined after students have attended the designated classes and taken the assessed examinations (semester-end examinations and/or assignments). There are five basic grade levels: S, A, B, C, and D. Passing grades are S, A, B, and C, whereas D is a fail.

ACADEMIC TRANSCRIPT

There are two kinds of transcripts for KIP students: a Grade Report and a Transcript of Academic Record. Grade Report and Transcript of Academic Record cannot be issued before the date below under any circumstance.

(1) Grade ReportThe Grade Report is a notification of student grades. It is not an official university transcript. Please do not lose yourGrade Report as it will not be reissued under any circumstances.

(2) Transcript of Academic RecordThe Transcript of Academic Record is an official Keio University transcript. We do not usually give an official recordof class attendance. It is up to instructors to choose whether they will check class attendance.

(3) Transcript Mailing Schedule for Fall Semester1. The Grade Report will be mailed to students’ registered addresses after September 5, 2018. The Transcript of

Academic Record will be mailed to students’ registered addresses after September 25, 2018.2. We will mail a photocopy of the Grade Report and an original copy of the Transcript of Academic Record to the

Exchange Program Coordinator of the student’s home university (exchange students only) by mid-October, 2018.*It is possible to get extra copies of the Transcript of Academic Record. Students should submit a request form beforeleaving Japan. Additional transcripts cost ¥200 per copy plus postage.

(4) Online Academic RecordsOnline Academic Records are scheduled to be made available to KIP students after September 5, 2018. (Onlineacademic records exclude personal information such as your name and student ID number to protect your privacy.)Access to the Online Academic Records requires password for “keio.jp”. Please make sure to confirm yourpassword WHILE YOU ARE IN JAPAN. If you forget your password, please come to Mita Campus. (5) Mailing Address for TranscriptsStudents can register the mailing address they wish the Office of Student Services to send their transcripts to online.Online registration opens approximately one month prior to the end of the semester.

CERTIFICATES

Various certificates can be issued at the Office of Student Services. Students must submit the “Request Form” with the appropriate amount of certificate stamps (shōshi), which can be purchased from a stamp vending machine located at the Office of Students Services on the B1F of the South School Building. Certificates will be issued within 3-5 business days. You can obtain “Student Travel Fare Discount Certificate (Gakuwari)” from certificate issuing machines near the Student Lounge [the 1st floor of the South School Building]. You need to put 4-digit Student ID Card PIN (Secret Number for

ASSIGNMENTS AND REPORT BOX

Students must follow the rules when submitting your assignments in the REPORT BOX located at the Office of Student Services on the B1F, South School Building, Mita Campus.

- The Report Box will open during a specified two-day period. Assignments will be accepted between 8:45-16:45over a two-day period. (The schedule for submission will also be posted on the bulletin board.) Please be awarethat assignments will not be accepted outside these times.

- Once an assignment has been submitted, no changes, corrections, or returns will be permitted for any reasoneven if the deadline for submission was not yet passed.

- You will need to fill out the yellow form with your name, student ID number, course name, instructor’s name,and staple it to your assignment.

SEMESTER-END EXAMINATIONS

(2) Semester-End Examination Guidelines and Rules for Students- Place your student ID card or temporary ID card on your desk at the upper right corner or on the side of the aisle.If you do not have your student ID card or a temporary ID card, you are not permitted to take the exams. If youhave lost your student ID card, make sure that you have one reissued before the start of the exams. If you forget yourstudent ID card on the exam day, go to the Office of Student Services and have a temporary ID card issued.

- Only permitted items may be placed on or in your desk. All other items must be kept in your bag placed at your feet.

- Even if the exam has no restrictions regarding prohibited items, all electronic devices including communicationand storage devices that allow students to fraudulently obtain information related to the exam content arestrictly prohibited. Devices include PCs, electronic dictionaries, mobile phones, smartphones, tablets, andsmartwatches. These communication devices must be switched off, including the alarm function, and stored in yourbag. Furthermore, these devices may not be used to track time.

- On your answer sheets, write in full (do not use abbreviations) name of the faculty member in charge of the subject,subject name, your name, and your student ID number. Answer sheets without these details will not be graded.

- Bringing in and taking answer sheets out of the exam room is deemed a misconduct. You must submit youranswer sheet, even if you have left it blank.

- Attendance sheets will be distributed after the start of the exam. Write your name and student ID number and pass it

to the person behind you. If you have a temporary ID card, write “仮” or “temporary” in the field for student ID card.

- Lift your face up when the proctor comes around to check your photo on the ID card.

- If you arrive late (due to train delays, reissuing of student ID card, issuing of temporary ID card, etc.), but withintwenty minutes after the start of the exam, you will be permitted to take the exam. However, you will not be givenspecial consideration such as receiving extra time to complete the exam.

- I f you arrive twenty minutes after the start of the exam, you will not be permitted under any circumstances(lateness due to train delays, reissuing of student ID card, issuing of temporary ID card, etc.) to enter the exam room.

- I f a student has seen the exam questions, that student will not be permitted under any circumstances to take themakeup exam (e.g., arriving late due to train delays, leaving the exam room during the exam due to sickness).*Check each faculty’s bulletin boards for information regarding makeup exams.

- If you are leaving the exam room thirty minutes after the exam has started, take all your belongings with you,including your bag, and submit your answer sheet at the prescribed exit or to a proctor.

- You may not leave the exam room during the last twenty minutes of the exam. As soon as the proctor signals theend of the exam, stop writing.

- After the end of the exam, the proctor will check whether the number of answer sheets corresponds to the numberof examinees as indicated on the attendance sheets. Remain seated until the proctor announces that you can leavethe room.

MAKEUP EXAMINATIONS

If you miss semester-end examinations offered at Mita Campus held during the examination period due to unavoidable reasons, you can apply for makeup examinations. The details will be announced on the International Center Bulletin Board.

ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT

Students will be strictly penalized for any acts of academic dishonesty on examinations or in their written work. Submitting a written assignment is like an examination or class test in that it is a way to determine a student’s academic ability. As such, any violation of the university’s rules for written assignments will result in a fail grade, and may have even further, more serious consequences.

Behaviors considered as misconduct are to as follows. - Cheating - Attending classes on behalf of somebody else - Taking answer sheets out of the exam room- Failure to follow the instructions of the proctorAvoid conduct that can be misconstrued as cheating when you are taking an exam.

- Falsifying or fabricating data- Behavior similar to those mentioned abovePlagiarism in assignments or papers is a misconduct. When using someone’s opinions or sentences withoutpermission, it will be considered as plagiarism and students will be punished for misconduct in the same or moresevere manner than for semester-end exam or in-class test or more.

When writing essays and reports take particular note of the following: 1. Be clear about which ideas are your own and which are not.2. Reference other people’s ideas.3. Quote sources accurately (include errors in the original text).4. Follow the rules for referencing.5. Include the URL and the date you accessed internet pages.

We would like to remind students that failing to adhere to these guidelines will be regarded as plagiarism and will be dealt with in the same way as cheating on an examination. We ask that you spend some time learning how to reference correctly by using sources such as referencing and citation guides.

GRADE INQUIRIES

Students may use the grade query system if they have a solid reason and would like to make an inquiry about the grading of a course they studied. Students must use Grade Inquiry System to query your grade. Do NOT contact the instructors directly. Students must not ask about the grade of the course you have taken directly to the teaching staff. STUDENT COMMUTER CERTIFICATE

If you take courses held on a Campus other than Mita, you can purchase a student commuter pass to the nearest station to that Campus. If you would like to purchase one, you need to request a Student Commuter Certificate issued by the Office of Student Services. You can apply for the route between the station nearest to your residence and the station nearest to one Campus via the most economical route. Please note that you can only apply for one Campus in addition to Mita Campus and that each railway company has different policies. A Student Commuter Certificate can be issued at the Office of Student Services (General Information Desk) on the B1F of the South School Building on Mita Campus, upon confirming your registration for applicable courses. Please bring a photocopy of your registration confirmation sheet and student ID card.

CLASSES IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

In cases where transport services such as rail are discontinued due to a large-scale accident or because of natural disasters, including typhoons, torrential rain, snow, and earthquakes, or in the event of any other emergency situation leading to the cancellation of classes, an announcement will be posted on the university’s website. Please note that notifications will be posted for each campus and that the measures adopted may vary.

(1) 21:00 on the day before hazards are expected due to typhoons, heavy snow, etc.:Information regarding the cancellation of morning classes for the following day will be posted. Depending on thecircumstances, information regarding the cancellation of afternoon classes on the following day may also beprovided.

(2) 10:00 on the day hazards are expected due to typhoons, heavy snow, etc.:If no decision has been made regarding the cancellation of afternoon classes at the time the notification in (1) aboveis posted, information regarding afternoon classes will be provided.

Important note If an emergency occurs after the start of classes, separate measures, such as sending students home early or shortening the duration of lectures, will be taken as circumstances dictate. KEIO-WASEDA BASEBALL GAME DAYS

On game days, classes will only be held for the first period. The second period and onward will be canceled to allow students to support the Keio Team. This will also apply for third-round matches and beyond. Classes will be held as normal if the game is suspended due to rain, etc. The handling of suspended classes on the day of a Keio-Waseda baseball game will be posted on the website at 9:00a.m. on the day of the game. http://www.gakuji.keio.ac.jp/

FFAAQQ

Q: Can I register for a course that I did not put on my study proposal or vice versa? A: Yes.

Q: Can I register for 2 or more courses offered at the same time on the same day? A: No. Students cannot register for courses that overlap.

Q: Can I schedule courses back-to-back, one class on the Hiyoshi or Yagami Campus and the next class on the Mita Campus, or vice versa?

A: No. Students need around an hour to move between Hiyoshi or Yagami, and Mita Campuses. However, attending second period on one Campus and third period on the other would be possible since there is a lunch break in between.

Q: Can I register for a course I have not yet attended? A: If you would like to register for a course you have not attended, please include it on the Course

Registration Form and submit the form during the Course Registration Period. If the course requires the instructor’s signature, please make sure to obtain one in the second class.

Q: I need to obtain the signature from the instructor to register a course, but the first class was cancelled or I did not go to the first class. What should I do?

A: Please include the course on the Course Registration Form and submit the form without the signature

during the Registration period. We will return the form to you after reviewing it. Please attend the second class, obtain the signature, and promptly re-submit the form.

Q: I submitted my official transcript when I applied to the exchange program. Do I still need to submit another one for the PCP courses?

A: Yes. Please submit the latest version of your transcript.

Q: What do I need to do if I want to take courses offered by Faculties/Graduate Schools conducted in Japanese?

A: First, you need to submit the proof that your Japanese language proficiency is equivalent to JLPT N2 level or higher. Please refer to Page 11 for the details. Then, please attend the first class of the course and obtain the signature of permission from the instructor on the Course Registration Form.

Q: Can I register online or via e-mail? A: Course registration is not accepted online or via e-mail. Please fill out the specified Course Registration

Form and submit it to the International Exchange Services Group in the Office of Student Services during the Course Registration Period.

Q: Is a 4-credit course counted as 2 courses? A: One 4-credit course is considered as 2 courses. For example, “Passport Members’ Workshop D” is counted

as 2 courses.

Q: There are some KJC courses that must be taken as a set. Are they counted as 1 course or 2 courses? For example, are “Essential Japanese 1M-1” and “Essential Japanese 1M-2” considered as 1 or 2 courses?

A: They are counted as 2 courses.

Q: Is the Japanese language placement test mandatory for all KIP students? A: You need to take the Japanese language placement test only if you wish to register for JLP level 7-9

courses. If you do not register for these subjects, you do not need to take the placement test.

Q: If I did not take the Japanese language placement test or if I have not been placed into the advanced study level, can I still register for advanced level Japanese language coursess offered by Japanese Language Program?

A: No, you cannot. However, you can register for advanced level KJC courses.

Q: If I did not take the Japanese language placement test or if I have not been placed into the advanced level, can I still register for Japanese Studies on Society and Culture subjects offered by Japanese Language Program?

A: Japanese Studies on Society and Culture subjects are recommended for those with Japanese language Proficiency equivalent to JLPT-N2 or higher. Please attend the first class and see if the subject matches your Japanese language proficiency. You can register for the subject if it is not full since JLP students have priority.

Q: How can I check if I have registered correctly? A: Registration confirmation sheet will be distributed after the Course Registration Period and, if you have

made changes, after the Course Registration Modification Period. You can also view the list of courses you have registered on the Academic Affairs System.

Q: Can I add or cancel courses after submitting the course registration form? A: Courses can be added or cancelled during the Course Registration Modification Period. After this period,

no courses can be added or cancelled, except for courses offered in the 2nd half of the semester. You cannot add “Undergraduate faculty / Graduate School Courses”.

Q: Is the instructor’s signature needed to add or cancel courses during the Course Registration Modification Period?

A: It depends on the course. Please refer to the description on the Course Change Form.

Q: I want to add a KJC course I have not attended during the Course Registration Modification Period, but there will be no class before the deadline. Can I sill register for it?

A: Please consult with the International Exchange Services Group in the Office of Student Services.

Q: When will coupon for textbooks for Japanese language courses be available? Do we get a discount with the coupon or exchange it to the books for free of charge? Can we get coupons for other courses?

A: We will distribute the coupon you can exchange for the textbooks for the Japanese language courses you have registered for free of charge from Tuesday, May 8. For other courses, no coupon will be provided.

Q: Do I have to take Japanese language courses? A: No, you do not have to take Japanese language courses.

Q: Can I register for a course I took in the previous semester? A: Yes. However, we recommend that you check with your home university whether it is OK on their side as

well.

Q: I would like to obtain the contact information of the instructor. A: First, check the syllabus or search on the web. You can also attend the first class and directly ask the

instructor. If you cannot find it, then consult the International Exchange Services Group in the Office of Student Services.

Q: My instructor told us to download the course materials from the Web. A: Course materials can be downloaded from keio.jp after you register for the course.
