Over recent years, both Northumbria University and GatesheadCollege have sought to develop the highest standards in sport.Now known as two of the country’s leading institutions in thisfield, Gateshead and Northumbria have come together withGateshead Council, Sports Coach UK and SkillsActive to forma regional centre for professional development in sport. This isan exciting initiative that provides a range of opportunities forstudents and members of the community to receive trainingand qualifications in coaching, leadership, sport development,event management, officiating and health and fitness.

Aims

■ To work in partnership to become a North East Centre forProfessional Development in Sport

■ To develop a high quality programme that complementsprovision in sport across the North East region

■ To develop a progressive programme that meets the needsof employers, the community, students, volunteers and professionals/employees (including teachers) at all levels.Programme to include all main areas of sport; coaching,officiating, development, management, teaching, health and fitness and performance support

■ To build, in a strategic way, upon existing provision in theNorth East region, with particularly close links to CountySport Partnerships, Community Sport Networks and Local Authorities

Athletics

Athletics Assistant This course is an introduction to 15th October 2006 Coach Lane Sports £45Coach Award coaching skills, with a major emphasis Centre (9–5pm)

on the “how to” skills rather than the “what” skills. There is a large practical element to the course with the theory being taught through the practical parts.

supported by FIFA and UEFA with World and European Championships for club and National Teams. Be taught the basic principles of the game, as well as gaining coaching knowledge from verified FA tutors.

Golf

Tri-Golf Award* Provides candidates with the knowledge 7th October 2006 City Sports Centre £20required to fully maximise the potential (10–12pm) of the Tri-Golf scheme and deliver activities in a structured and co-ordinated programme linked to the delivery of the preliminary level on the Junior Golf Passport.

Health & Fitness

Developing Power & Power and speed are fundamental 18th November 2006 Coach Lane Sports £20Speed components of sporting success. With Centre (10–1pm)

both technical and practical aspects, participants will examine effective training techniques as well as programme planning and progressions for all ages and standard of athlete. This workshop will be delivered by English Institute of Sport Strength and Conditioning coach Dr. Duncan French.

Field Based Fitness Provides participants with effective 24th February 2007 Coach Lane Sports £20Testing approaches to monitoring and assessing Centre (10–1pm)

athlete performance standards in the field. A variety of assessment tools will be examined. Participants will be expected to perform practical exercise tasks. This workshop will be delivered by English Institute of Sport Strength and Conditioning coach Dr. Duncan French.

Nutritional Workshop An introductory course directed towards 10th March 2007 Coach Lane Sports £20athletes and coaches, this workshop will Centre (10–1pm)examine a variety of topical issues surrounding performance nutrition. Topics covered will include, pre/post-exercise nutrition, eating to grow, thefoundations of a performance diet and dietary supplements. individually and as a team. The session will be lead be two of New Zealand’s top professional female Netball players.

Super League Netball Learn the most effective and creative 14th January 2007 Coach Lane Sports £25Workshop (Attacking attacking plays in netball with two of Centre (11–3pm)Play) New Zealand’s top female netball

players. This workshop will guide you through the principles of attacking play, and will increase your understanding of the basics needed when playing.

Super League Netball This workshop is the essential guide 28th January 2007 Coach Lane Sports £25Workshop (Shooting) to shooting, teaching you the correct Centre (11–3pm)

techniques – both physically and mentally.Two of New Zealand top female netballers will give you expert coaching advice during both the practical and theoretical part of this workshop.
