I. Program Descriptor:

Welding Technology follows the AWS (American Welding Society) SENSE program. Which will provide students with the opportunity to

achieve various AWS SENSE Certifications. Students can use their acquired skills in many career paths such as Fabrication, Pipe Welding,

Industrial Maintenance, Weld Inspector and into post-secondary education. The program involves both hands on and theory lessons, building the

students’ knowledge base on math, measurements, welding processes and design. Branching into career and continued education options with

welding after completion of the program. With the welding industry growing students will get an introduction into Computer Aided Design and

Programing.

II. Program Outcome:

Graduates of this program should be able to communicate technical information both verbally and in writing effectively, demonstrate

mathematical skills and application of scientific principles in problem solving, and apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to analyze data, in

the creation of experimental procedures and analysis of the outcome.

IV. Course Descriptions:

A. Introduction to the World of Welding (9th)

This course presents an introduction to the World of Welding, giving the students the needed safety procedures, rules, and regulations to

work safely in welding, showing where welding evolved from and the direction it is heading to have a better of understanding of welding. Using

Virtual Reality Welding Machines will teach students the entry skills with arc welding. Students will also learn the basics of electricity, shop skills and

general work ethics. Additional topics covered will include weld positions, proper terminology, measurements, and types of metals. Projects will

incorporate these basic skills, bringing them together and showing understanding. Students will also learn about the various career options

available.

B. Principles of Welding (9th)

This course focuses on the fundamental principles of welding, including basic thermal/mechanical cutting and using fusion to weld materials

as one. Safe operation of OxyFuel torches and equipment will be included, as well as proper setup and shutdown. Students will learn to choose

other mechanical (Shear, Saws) ways to cut material in the shop. Understanding SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process and its equipment;

choosing polarity, electrodes, and safety gear. Students will begin their entry into AWS SENSE proficiencies.

C. Arc Welding Theory I (10th)

This course introduces students to arc welding processes, use of electricity to fuse material together using SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc

Welding), GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding), FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding), and GTAW (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding). Students will learn how each

process works, equipment used, and safety needed, along with which gases are used with each process. Thermal cutting with Plasma Arc with how

it works, safety/hazards, and setup. Students will also learn how Welding prints are used and read, including weld symbols regularly found in

industry.

D. Arc Welding Lab (10th)

This course gives the students hands on experience working in the weld shop. Students will develop needed skills for the safe operation and

use of Shielding gas and its storage. They will also learn how to maintain equipment and adjust as needed, from starting with a weld print, preparing

the material, welding, and then to final inspection, students will gain working knowledge. Storage of materials and supplies, tracking use of products

and equipment and the use of SMAW and GMAW will be introduced.

Page 4: Course Title: Welding Technology · other mechanical (Shear, Saws) ways to cut material in the shop. Understanding SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process and its equipment; choosing

E. Arc Welding Theory II (10th)

This course will provide the students with the knowledge needed to weld in out of position using SMAW and GMAW. Horizontal, Vertical,

and Overhead are focused allowing the students to weld in alternate positions. Which electrodes work, how to set a machine, and what hazards are

faced when working in out of position. Other objectives of this course are weld joint preparation and set up. How polarity and amperes are directly

connected when SMAW out of position. FCAW and GTAW will be introduced, setup and use of the equipment. How the added skills will connect

with career options after graduation.

F. Metal Fabrication (11th)

This course focuses on using welding skills in metal fabrication as well as when and how to mechanically put materials together. Types of

mechanical fastener (bolts, rivets, screw, etc.), when and how to choose them, and why. Students will be trained on shop equipment such as

shears, brakes, ironworkers, drills/drill presses, hydraulic presses, and how to layout, plan and schedule projects. Cost calculations, using material,

supplies and labor will also be introduced.

G. CNC Thermal Cutting (11th)

This course introduces students to Computer Controlled Thermal Cutting using Plasma Arc as a basis. In this course, topics covered are

the basics of a CNC Plasma Cutter; power unit, controller, table, gantry, and dust control along with basic programming and design of a project,

creating shapes, texts, and importing objects are additional topics. Students will learn setting up of machines for cutting, taking into consideration

material type and size, selecting voltage, amperes, and travel speed. Machine maintenance, dust and smoke hazards, and adjustments. Additional

areas will be other ways to cut and create material using laser and water for energy.

H. Advanced Welding Lab (11th)

This course focuses on students using time in the shop to develop their Advance skills. Using all equipment in the weld shop, SMAW,

GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW welders. In addition to fabrication and cutting equipment to complete skill projects for their AWS SENSE Proficiencies.

Focusing on shop safety, developing good personal safety habits, and students will gain career skills. Math and measurement topics while

preparing proper weld drawings.

I. AWS Theory I (12th)

This course focus is on preparing the weld students to be AWS SENSE Certified before graduation. Topics of this course are the first five

modules of SENSE. Occupational Orientation, Safety and Health, Print Reading and Symbols, SMAW Theory and GMAW Theory are the topics to

be covered. For Occupational Orientation topics will be time management, understanding verbal and written instructions, and housekeeping. With

Page 5: Course Title: Welding Technology · other mechanical (Shear, Saws) ways to cut material in the shop. Understanding SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process and its equipment; choosing

Safety and Health PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to Shop Practices will be addressed. Welding Print understanding and symbol practices.

SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) and GMAW (Gas Metal Arc Welding) skills and knowledge will be refreshed. Students will understand the

requirements for each module.

J. AWS Theory II (12th)

This course focus is on preparing the weld students for the additional Modules for AWS SENSE Certified before graduation. Topics of this

course are the final four modules for SENSE. FCAW Theory, GTAW Theory, Thermal Cutting Processes, and Welding Inspection/Testing. For

FCAW (Flux Cored Arc Welding) and GTAW(Gas Tungsten Arc Welding) skills and knowledge will be refreshed. In Thermal Arc Cutting, OxyFuel

(both manual and mechanized), along with manual Plasma Arc Cutting theories and practice covered. With Welding Inspection and Testing,

industry standards will be learned to allow students basic knowledge or requirements.

K. AWS Proficiency Lab (12th)

The focus of this course is to allow the weld students hands on practice with their AWS SENSE Practical Exams. Giving students time in

their weld booths to complete projects as required by AWS. Using any of the skills learned in SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and GTAW welding

procedures, plus preparing the material with layout, cutting, and prepping.

L. Advance Metal Design (12th)

This course will bring the skills learned together for weld students. They will learn how to choose which weld procedure is best for a

particular project, how to create a print, along with a build of materials list. Students will learn calculating cost and estimates to assist in planning

jobs along with why to use certain materials and joint styles. Alternatives to standard weld practices and when/why to choose them will also be

introduced.

M. Welding School to Work {Optional} (12th)

School-to-work is an option for Weld students once they meet all AWS SENSE requirements and maintain a required level in school. School

to Work is a chance to gain Industry Experience. Following set structured learning procedures, students have the opportunity to develop real world

skills.
