1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

Lucy Hughes

Page 2: Coursework evaluation question 1

In what ways does my front cover use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Like other media products my magazine has a clear and defined barcode. Every magazine has one of these

I have stuck to the forms and conventions of real media products by having a clear masthead at the top of the page. I chose to place it at the top of the page like other media products so its clear for the reader to see.

Every media product has the date on the front and the issue number, again I decided to follow the forms and conventions of real media products by placing it in the same place as professional magazines, this is because I believe it fits there nicely and doesn’t take it too much space.

Again like the majority of professional magazines I decided to add a footer, I decided to put a footer is as through my magazine research I saw that a lot of magazines have this feature. I also believe that it is useful as it gives the reader more information about what is going to be included in the magazine,

My main image follows the forms and conventions of real media products as it takes up the majority of the page, like other professional magazines out there. Also the image is front on and Steph’s eyes are directly facing the camera.

My cover lines follow the forms and conventions of real media products as they’re clear and structured. Also like professional magazines the majority of the text is on the left hand side as when magazines are stacked in shops this is the side that shoppers will see- this shows that I have followed the forms and conventions of real magazines.

In what ways does my front cover use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Shows that I have used the conventions as kerrang! Also uses a footer

Used the forms and conventions as Kerrang! Have got a barcode on their magazine, it is also placed in the same corner

Challenged the conventions by only having one image on my front cover, however I also used the conventions by having the main image taking up the majority of the space

Used the conventions by having a clear masthead, it is placed at the top of the magazine like Kerrang!

I have challenged the conventions by not having a header.

In what ways does my contents page use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? With my contents page my

magazine challenges the forms and conventions of real media products by only having two images on the page, whereas other magazines have a range of images. The reason why I decided to only use two images was because I didn’t want the page to look too cluttered, also I wanted to make the images that I was using large to fill the space.

I followed the forms and conventions of real media products by captioning the pictures. This appears in all music magazines and the reason why I chose to use this convention is so the reader can easily see where to find the article relating to the picture.

I used the forms and conventions of real media products by having the date and issue number appear again on the contents page, the reason why I followed this convention was to give the magazine structure and show that it was all one issue.

I used the conventions of real media products by having page references and then some text explaining what was going to be on the page. The reason why I used this convention was because it gives the magazine structure and if I didn’t have page numbers the reader wouldn’t be able to find the article in the magazine.

I developed magazine conventions by placing separate headers for each section of text, the reason why I did this was so the contents page became more convenient for the reader.

With my masthead on the contents page I used the conventions of real media products by having a clear bold heading stating that this is the contents page. I used this form and convention as I believe it gives the magazine structure as the reader knows what page is which.

In what ways does my contents page use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Used the conventions by having a clear title stating that the page is the contents page, Kerrang! Has also done this.

Challenged the forms and conventions of Kerrang! Magazine as I don’t have as many images on my contents page, also my images are larger.

Used conventions by having page numbers

Challenged forms and conventions by not having a editors note.

In what ways does my double page spread use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My double page spread used the forms and conventions of real media products by placing page numbers on the page. This was important when I was creating a magazine as I had to ensure that every detail was covered to make my magazine as professional as possible. The page numbers allow the reader to easily find the article they want.

The main image on my double page spread challenges the conventions of real media products as through my research I’ve seen that many magazines use more than one image on their double page spread. The reason why I only chose to use one was because I didn’t want the page to be dominated by images I wanted the reader to be focused on the text. This is also why I chose to use a plain background as I didn’t want anything distracting the reader from the interview.

I developed the conventions of real media products by actually placing the quote on the image, I decided to do this to pull the reader in and show how the quote relates to the image and therefore relates to the interview. This is developed compared to real media products as the majority of media products place their quote highlighted within the text and don’t place the actual quote on the picture

I used the forms and conventions of real media products when I was constructing my interview. You can clearly see the layout of the interview and who is the interviewer and the interviewee. I decided to follow the forms of real media products for this aspect of the double page spread as it makes the magazine look more professional and the layout is easy for the reader to read.

This is the header and sub header for the double page spread and for this I used the forms and conventions of real media products. This is because it gives the reader a good idea of what is going to appear in the article and then allows them to decide whether they want to read on or not. By using this convention of real media products I believe my double page spread looks more professional.

Page 7: Coursework evaluation question 1

In what ways does my double page spread use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Shows that I challenged conventions as Kerrang! Have many different images on their contents page whereas I only chose to have one.

Used conventions as like Kerrang! I have used the masthead on the double page spread to give the magazine continuity

Again I followed the conventions by having a little summary of what the article is about, as you can see Kerrang! Have done this too.
