About UsThe 32BJ Training Fund is a joint labor-management partnership that offers training to eligible participants at no cost. The fund is supported by contributions negotiated between 32BJ SEIU and participating employ-ers. Our mission is to train every participant to grow to the next level. We want to continually raise the standards of our industry by provid-ing 32BJ members with the tools they need to meet the challenges of a changing industry.

At the 32BJ Training Fund everything we do supports the goal of making it possible for members to get the education, training, and skills they need to grow in the quickly changing property services industry.

CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT

FOR LEARNING

Participants who take courses through the 32BJ Training Fund are hardworking people who make a commitment to their personal and professional development. Our Rules and Regulations are distributed at the start of each course. Not only are you expected to read the Rules and Regulations, but also to show your fellow students the respect they deserve by abiding by these rules.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

Minimum attendance of 80 percent is required. Unfortunately, academic and computer classes that do not have regular attendance of at least eight students may be closed or combined. We will do our best to accommodate all students in another section. Ask your instructor to assign make-up work to improve your attendance rate.

COURSE/QUICK COURSE PREREQUISITES

Some courses and quick courses require you to complete a prerequisite—a preparatory course—before you enroll. Some courses require minimum reading and math skills. Achievement of these skills can be estab-lished by presenting a high school diploma or its equivalent from an English-speaking country, or by passing a standardized test at registration. These prerequisites are noted above each course description.

EMERGENCY SCHOOL CLOSINGS

To inquire about the possible cancellation of classes in the event of a weather emergency or other hazardous conditions, contact your Site Manager.

NOTICE OF NONDISCRIMINATION POLICY

The 32BJ Training Fund does not discrimi-nate on the basis of race, color, age, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, ethnicity, or religion in the administration of its educational or admission policies.

TEST OUT AVAILABLE

The 32BJ Training Fund allows members to test out of some prerequisite courses, where available. This is indicated above each course description.

About Course OfferingsCourses take place over an entire trimester, which is 11 to 16 weeks long. The length is indicated under each course title and is shown in the following format:COURSE: 11 WEEKS

Quick Courses vary in length, ranging from 1 to 10 sessions. The number of sessions and the length are indicated under each quick course title and are shown in the following format: QUICK COURSE: TWO 3-HOUR SESSIONS

Courses and quick courses are offered at day, evening, and weekend times. Schedules and locations are located underneath the course and quick course descriptions. 11 week courses run all 3 trimesters unless otherwise stated.

WEEKDAY SESSIONS last 2 to 3 hours and meet once or twice per week.

WEEKEND SESSIONS last 2 to 6 hours and meet once per week.

Lottery To ensure that everyone has a fair and equal opportunity, we have a registration lottery to determine who gets enrolled in certain classes. This lottery is NOT first come, first served. We hold a request period for a few weeks before each of our three trimesters. During this request period members can request classes on the website, can come into the office, or can give us a call. Once the request period is complete we “run the lottery” in our registration system and equitably enroll members in these classes.

Green Buildings Green buildings are a recent trend in the building industry. Many building owners and operators want their buildings to earn a green certification so they are recognized as buildings that are run efficiently and offer a better quality of life for residents. In turn, these owners and operators want to hire building staff who understand green building concepts, strategies, and technology.

We have developed a series of courses that teach the best practices for sustainable operation and maintenance (O&M). Our courses offer green training for residential and commercial buildings and the opportunity to earn industry recognized certificates. We also offer courses on the LEED rating system used by high-performance buildings and the opportunity to earn LEED professional certifications. To see the recommended training path, view the Career Track at the front of this catalog. If you have any questions or want to learn more about Green Building Training, check the 32BJ Training website at training.32bjfunds.org, call 212-539-2811, or contact [email protected].
