Richard CartwrightThis architecture is about how it fits in society, the revelation and predictions that are made. It will reveal what is there and evolve with the changing events. The fit and revelation are not just for the present day, but over time, in the future; thus prediction. This building wants to be the centrepiece for the democracy in Coventry. People have conflicts due to different opinions on a subject they believe in, this relies heavily on the democracy in England to support the majority vote to solve these issue fairly. The underlying theme of this building will be honesty, represented by transparency in materials, freedom of the people and the flowing motion of movement through the exterior and interior of my building. The essence of the building will be like a slick moving machine that endlessly and efficiently aids the councillors to work for a better Coventry. I will do this by separating the spaces, emphasising each section in relation to the conflicts that occur with in the area. I will be supporting the idea of a new democracy of coventry and celebrate this in the design of the building.

Rajwinder Davgun“Public green organic spacing as a generator of democracy and for Coventry’s missing landscaping” The idea behind my design proposal was to create a space that offered to the wider community and users of Coventry, sited in the city centre. The New Council House is a ‘Place for people’ that hosts the council and offers a public realm for all ages within the City of Coventry. The New Council House represents not only the heart of Coventry but also the heart of both circulation and interaction. I intended to connect with the broader landscaping with site analysis, exploring the surroundings, understanding the context of a Council House for Coventry, and researching the techniques. The main purpose that I was trying to achieve through my design is for the building was to serve as a connection between public spacing and private spacing, but also being symbolic towards the programming and democracy of a Council House. Setting the foundation towards my design development and the approach to create an open engaging comfortable space for users. My design has a space for interaction, leisure and contacts between public and councillors that will be provided, this will increase the energy of the city centre. My design shapes the site and the concept of organic green spacing. The design concept shapes the theory of what happens within a building that serves the democratic functions of local government.

Kristina DimovaConcept : “Public space as a generator of democracy” [Public courtyard and park] Public space was my main design tool and the generator of the building’s organization and form. The main intension was trying to achieve was the Council House to be a work place for the councillors, but also to serve as a connection between three public spaces (Broadgate square, the new courtyard in the middle of the building and the new park landscape next to the church, as the last two are part of my design development). In this way a space for interaction, leisure and contact between the public and the councillors will be provided which will increase the vitality of the city centre. The new Council House will represent not only the heart of Coventry but also a heart of both circulation and interaction.

Sarah DouglasThe ambition of my project was to honour true democracy, as a return of people as sovereign. This idea formed the basis of my conceptual thinking, which I developed, creating a design centered on and for the people of Coventry. I wanted to establish a new approach to government in which openness and collaboration is supported by the transparency of my building. The former council house is split into four entities; each building achieves transparency through glazed façades systems, which allow citizens to engage with governmental process. The buildings are seated in a civic garden, which serves as an extended meeting point and area to facilitate cultural activities.

Jon HollandThe concept for my council building stems from, is that most building are designed to segregate communites of people, especially in political settings where the party in power is seperated from the parties in opposition, this also occurs between the public and staff. The building splits the office blocks, exposing connections between staff and public and creating unexpected meetings between the party in power, opposition and the public. I have given the spaces contrsating facades, leaving the central meeting space more transparent and the office spaces seemingly closed with layers of columns. The interior stairs stand a feature that can be seen from over 400m away through the main shopping area of the city. These mark the main connections that are needed to make between the office blocks, the public and also contains the core meeting spaces for interaction.

Daniel HurstThe approach I take to a new project is usually searching for the key questions that affect both the form and function of a potential design. Examples of this could be either physical, for example the site, or theoretical like a concept. Once I have found these key questions I can then base my design around them. This ensures that the design I create is sensitive to its surroundings, and that the concept behind the design remains strong. The work shown here is of my project for the new home for Coventry City Council. Again I searched for the key questions that I thought were important to this project. These were ones surrounding the site and urban fabric in which the new project would sit. Other key questions came from the various discussions that need to happen within a council house, and therefore how could the building facilitate and aid these different discussions through the use of different spaces.

Tabir KhanUpon being handed the brief, it was clear that we needed to design a central place for the people of Coventry, the heart of the city. Hence the people became an active & vital part of my design which I translated by putting them on the forefront. I intended to design a neutral proposal that catered to all the different people of Coventry. The concept of my building was purity, purity of geometry that did not have any cultural context. Purity through half a cube, reflected as a whole cube in a shallow pond of water.

Lydia MuadinohambaSited in the heart of the city the New Council House for Coventry will be a “House for the Community” - hosting the Coventry Council and offering a public realm for all, through the institution’s collective internal and external spaces. The new landmark comprised of two angled building strips of varying height, between which a cube highlights the most important functions of the Building. The transparency of the double skin, enhances the relationship between the inside and the outside and secondly highlights the councils’ ethos of hierarchy, however this central space portrays democracy in the connectivity it offers into the two wings of the buildings. It offers light-filled, open and inclusive spaces, which encourage the interaction between councilors and the community. To support connectivity with the local community, most public areas or rooms are in close proximity to the ground floor’s gallery space, allowing a vibrant atmosphere to form through inclusion for all.

Ion NyegreWhat is democracy? Well,Some may say it is an Ideal belief, While others may say it is a system governed by its people. In order to pursue a suitable design approach, Research about conceptual thinking and holistic Urban planning helps me narrowing down and constraining design features and considering a different architectural style for our project. Considering the social impact of this type of construction, sustainability is one of their key aspects of the project. Having provided a roof made of solar panels, in order to enhance the Self production of Energy and lowering consumption. The building is also wrapped in recycled polymer panels, which have been perforated in order to behave like a sun shading system.

Darshan PithadiaIn the year 1940, the German Air Force bombed Coventry which burnt most of it to the ground. Through the ashes of the aftermath the city was reborn and now holds the symbol of a phoenix. My design was based around this concept of the rebirth of a city in the past, and the council house in the present. There are three key stages within the concept of rebirth; birth, life and ascension.

Broadgate; The heart of Coventry that has seen its development taken more steps backwards than forwards. My concept focuses on bringing back the historical part of Coventry back to its former glory as well as meeting the needs of its citizens. The design takes several factors into consideration such as the former Gibson plan, positives and negatives of its citizens and the history of the site. The aim of the platform is to raise the site and bring importance back to the old landmarks and also develop a new threshold that did not exist before. The stairs informs you of a new and different space but also replicates the threshold formed on Coventry square. Underneath the podium emphasizes the roots of Coventry where all decision making will take place and work its way out and into Coventry.

For me, the Architecture Course at Coventry University has served as a foundation, familiarising with a range of different techniques and approaches to the design process. Redesigning the Coventry City Council, a project over past six months has focused on a domestic scale, allowing myself to explore and build upon my own experiences in understanding and representing architectural space in all its complexities. The idea of creating a pocket park in Broadgate Square using the Council Buildings as a representative part of the park has been based on real context and encouraged me to be aware of cultural, social and environmental issues. This design has been developed by attending to a wide range of workshops exploring specific themes, skills and techniques. At the end of design process development, the course has been an enjoyable and insightful journey.

Zohair ShaikhThe city operates on various different levels of public access that creates thresholds within the urban fabric. The building positions itself to terminate these thresholds to make a more tangible relationship between various sectors of the city. The proposal for the new City Council picks up on their work ethic and is represented on the footprint, as the building has no clear boundaries. The extensions of panels and walls aims to integrate the city council with the context it sits in. The shape is denoted by the different trajectories, axis and geometries on site as a result the building is a response to the context, yet, it stands alone. The building allows the user to go on a journey, allowing progressive discussions whilst having a veiw of the multiple sectors of Coventry.

Daniel TomkoThe concept of reversing democracy was applied in the first part of this project and was developed into the Council House. Since WW2 public buildings have become more democratic through transparency and free-dom of movement. At the same time, people, the very aspect democracy is based upon, seems to be the last thing to be taken into consideration during architectural planning. My concept focuses on making people the key ele-ment and public space, the driving force behind my design. The ground floor is populated with restaurants, cafés and meeting spaces for the public. The pods are separated by a central vertical void and are connected through a network of pathways and escalators that are open for use by the public which further reinforces my concept.

Corrina WinterburnMy project is focusing on ghost Buildings and landmarks of the past. There are many buildings with interesting story’s that are not around anymore, however by using a map from 1910 overlaid with a 2016 map, I found where these buildings were and have based my project around the foundations of these, which were markets in Broadgate. Archaeological Building foundations are precious hence the buildings celebrates the presence of them, at the same time creating a lively space underneath which re-creates the markets that were previously there.

Fitzroy YauIn a hierarchal order, I’ve designated a space for each user across the city centre – Broadgate, Upper Precinct and Lower Precinct respectively. They are laid out in a series of squares on an east-west axis centred on the cathedral spire. I decided this arrangement because I wanted to restore the linear conection from Lower Precinct to the Cathedral. Therefore, I avoided designing the whole council house in Broadgate and split the programmes in relation to the users. It was also an opportunity to bring back the vitality of the squares. Each square has a different interactive space to create unique atmospheres for people to enjoy. They were based on the type of user and the level of openness and privacy required.

Yukun ZhangBuilding within a landscape, connecting the past and today’s master plan. The site is not only in the centre of Coventry, but also between the two strong atmosphere and has lost its identity as the heart of the city. To become the hub of Coventry once again, I think it is important not only make people think of it as a council house, but also think of it as a place for gathering and somewhere to make them want to stay. Since democracy has no boundary between people and government, people should feel relaxed either inside or on the outside of the building. So, I wrote my own brief of blurring the boundary between government and citizen people by creating more landscape in broadgate. And having a new element that could combine the two type of spaces. The landscape is used to soften the transition of the site, the movement of people from commercial modern architecture to the Sharp edged historical atmosphere. The transition smooth and softened by soft edges and sinuous natural transition into building.
