The tutors introThis year our students are entering a particularly challenging job market, despite this De Montfort University students wil l embrace the design world with individuality and determination. Our students portfolios reflect their creative diversity, not only demonstrating the skil ls needed to be a designer, but also the ability to apply skil ls and knowledge to address a vast range of complex design problems. The resulting outcomes form a range of exciting solutions that often challenge the way we see the world. This year, our students have explored important social issues such as mental health, design conservation, sustainability, education and the economy. In response to these issues, our students have developed a range of dynamic solutions, within the context of residential, leisure, healthcare, retail and performance environments. As tutors we are proud to see the social and moral ethics demonstrated in our students work. This gives us great reassurance for the future of design and the role that De Montfort University Interior Design graduates will play within it. I am sure that you will join together with us in wishing our students all the success they deserve.

InfoAfter university, my aim is to go into design. I love the design of commercial and retail spaces but residential is more intriguing to me, as boundaries can be broken and there is more variety. Outside design I enjoy spending time with people who just enjoy life and take each day as it comes and I am a reserved, happy go lucky guy whom appreciates all the blessings of life.

My final project is a residential scheme, I designed a unit of terraced housing in Lagos, Nigeria. It is loosely based around the Earths’ natural ‘heat’ climate; a house designed and decorated to emit, warmth, happiness and colourful emotions. With deep reds and browns with beautiful gold reflective details, to highlight space and features naturally reflecting light. An ideal space for a stylish young family or middle aged, high net-worth individual.

InfoAs a designer, research, planning and communicating ideas are my strongest areas. I work through things in a methodical manner and with this approach I am able to find quick and effective solutions to different problems. As well as this, I am very competent when working within a group and equally get on well when alone. Through research, I am proficient in visualizing and communicating my design process, culminating in effective design solutions.

My dissertation looked at how effective the products currently available for people in the early stages of Alzheimer’s are at meeting the needs of their target market. One area that was tackled was safety of Alzheimer’s patients when driving. The product above is the final design, a result of the research carried out within the area of safety in cars. The other major project was a design package that looked at sustainable design within retail environments. The final result was this point of sale display unit, sustainably made.

InfoWhile studying Interior Design, I have developed my skills using CAD and my ability to easily visualise a design as a real project. My preferred design environment would be based on a leisure project, as this has been my main focus while at university. However, I would be more than willing to look into other areas of design and develop myself further. As design affects all people that use a space, it is imperative that not only the aesthetics work but that the design is fit for purpose.

The project is a refurbishment of an existing commercial office interior for a shipping company based in Iran in the city of Tehran. InfoAs a designer I feel that design has and will always play an essential role to the day-to-day lives of everything that inhabits earth. Design is evident in everything we touch, hear, fee land see. It is because of design the blind can read and see through invisible design, which enables individuals to feel a certain unique way when enclosed in any environment. It is because of our emotions that we can psychologically interact and connect with our surroundings. I feel that my design thinking targets how one feels when entering a space and how spaces serve a purpose, thereafter followed by the aesthetics.

InfoAre we human? Are we dancer? In a former life I worked as a dancer. Though I primarily expressed myself through movement, I was aware that scenography played a fundamental role in creating the atmosphere required during performances. My interest in Interior Design stems from a desire to create striking, permanent “human” environments in contrast to the fleeting ambience created by the “dancer”. As a mature (but only just) student , I see myself as a highly motivated and technically skilful designer, who will bring to the market place all the energy and flair required to achieve a successful production. InfoWe are so familiar with the routines of our lives that often we proceed each day without paying any attention to our surroundings. It is like an everyday journey home, where you can’t remember the locations that you have just travelled through. While I respect all the traditional aspects of design and architecture I believe in breaking rules to awake the end user. My intentions are to create the desire to experience and interact with spaces on a day to day basis. I want my designs to influence people and make their life more exciting.

This project is aimed to update Red Cross as a brand to make it more attractive for younger generation. The guerrilla campaign followed by Charity Pop-up Store fulfils demands of trend-seeking consumers. The animated quality to this store makes a subject of humanitarian help more approachable.

InfoAs a young keen designer, I am eager to learn new skills and gain experience in the design industry. My aesthetic consists of a gentle approach with delicate use of media. I prefer hand rendering and hand convention drawings but I am fully capable of using CAD software and digital rendering for producing similar effects. I complete every task to the best of my ability and strive to produce practical and elegant solutions.

Harry Watton House is a rehabilitation and recovery facility for those who are mentally ill and/or have addition problems. My redevelopment of the facilities creates an open day centre where users can learn skills to reintegrate themselves in to the local community and live a healthy lifestyle.

InfoI have strong skills in conceptualising an idea and pursuing it through a well-built development process – this resulting in a finished and client friendly outcome. I enjoy working as part of a group and love to bounce ideas off other people.I believe in working resourcefully and not limiting my self to one discipline when developing a concept.

Re:made is an idea which focuses on the reconstruction of local businesses. Designed in the style of a convention or exhibition, the backdrop will form an event where the general public can come and see what their locality has to offer and create an ideal situation for business networking. The event will move and relocate to different cities.

As my final project, I have chosen to redesign a plot of residential terraces which lacked in internal and external spaces, located in the South East of London. The redesign is complimented with exclusive open plan interiors and exterior views of every terrace. This has been an exciting and challenging project in every aspect of design.
