Message from the President WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! How many times have we heard this lately? But it is so true; we will

not get through the coronavirus pandemic unless we all work together. The membership of EFM is

what keeps us going year after year. We are so grateful for the support of our members and hope that

everyone is staying safe during this unprecedented time.

Last year at the end of our Annual Report, I mentioned that the world had changed dramatically since

the founding of EFM and that we would be adapting to our new environment. Little did we know how

much things would be changing. In reporting on the activities and successes of the past year for EFM

it has to be said that we are looking at two different time periods: before and after COVID-19. Before

the pandemic struck, EFM was on a path to one of our most successful years ever; we surpassed our

budget projections. And then….well, it’s probably best to look at the past year in two segments: before

coronavirus, and the new normal of living in limbo land.

Master Class 46 This year we had a particularly dedicated and engaged group of participants, and many were already

active with other environmental organizations such as Drawdown Marin, the Climate Center, Feed the

World, and Resilient Neighborhoods. We are pleased that quite a few have decided to join the EFM

Board. Last fall’s field trip to West Marin was opened up to members and the public and was so

popular that we ran out of space.

The members of MC46 didn’t miss a beat when the pandemic hit. Fortunately, the field trips and

classes were all completed, but the Project Presentations had not yet occurred. It was decided that the

presentations would take place on April 4 via Zoom when 15 projects were presented and the event

was at least as well attended as it would have been if we had held it in person. And, the projects were

truly fantastic.

Community Education The Community Education events have

continued to build increasing audiences

over the past few years. On November 6

the event on Philanthropy was well

attended and maxed out the available

space at the Wellness Center. Two films

were sponsored in Fairfax and in Novato,

and on February 4 an event on Microgrids

was attended by over 200 people at the

Corte Madera Community Center.

While it seemed that the Community Education events were on a roll, that was not to be for the next

event originally scheduled for March 17 on Sea Level Rise. The Sea Level Rise event will now be held

Page 5: Cover Photo by Vicki Rupp Reports... · 2020-07-16 · budget projections. And then….well, it’s probably best to look at the past year in two segments: before coronavirus, and

on June 18 using a Zoom webinar format. A

program planned for May 5 on Healthy

Agricultural Soils will take place in the Spring of

2021. There will be a program on

Investment/Divestment entitled “Make Your

Money Talk Part I” to be held online November

17, 2020.

Membership/Communications So many members have volunteered to help out with the Master Class and the Community Education

programs. Without their support, both financial and in kind, EFM would not be able to continue its

mission to provide environmental education for a sustainable world, more important now than ever.

We were able to maintain the high level of member renewals set last year, and appreciate the support

and love our members have shown for EFM.

We have continued to build on the marketing research prepared by Green Ideals from last year. The

website has been continually updated and the Newsletter, sent five times a year to our ever expanding

contact list, highlights the impacts our programs and graduates are having in the battle to combat

climate change. Due to the pandemic, we have had to pivot and rely on our online presence and tools

such as Zoom to do our outreach. Soon, a blog will be added to the website that will highlight subjects

that will be of interest to our members.

Looking Ahead

It’s going to be a bumpy ride for a while so we are making plans that are flexible. The budget for fiscal

2021 has been pared down as much as possible. Support for EFM and the Founders Fund will be

especially important this next year. Last November the Board started a process to reimagine the

Master Class. The pandemic has catapulted us forward and a new Master Class program has emerged

– streamlined, updated, accessible, current, and suited for the online format we will be using for the

foreseeable future. We are also working on a new way to create the field trip experience while social

distancing. And, there are plans for several Community programs to be presented online.

On June 3 the Annual Meeting will be held via Zoom. Please join us for a virtual celebration of the

achievements of the past year. The new Master Class program will be unveiled and we will have a

breakout session (a Forum!) to discuss the inter-relatedness of Covid-19 and climate change. Many

thanks to the people who have volunteered to serve on the Board and in off-board positions. A special

thanks goes to our Executive Director, Kim Rago, who makes everything work. These are difficult

times for us all, but TOGETHER WE WILL GET THROUGH THEM.
