Some years ago I had the privilege of standing in the Colosseum and was amazed at the size of the structure. Although the site is a ruin, one can easily imagine the grandeur of the place. About 2000 years ago this was the place for entertainment.

If you walk about 15 minutes down the road, past the arch built to commemorate Titus’ victories, you will come to the Roman forum which

was the centre of democracy and the origins of our modern system of government. One cannot help be impressed with the size of the buildings and the beautiful architecture and yet today they are broken down and weeds grow amongst the fallen stones.

Two thousand years ago the religious establishment of the day and the Roman government, who often fought with each other, conspired together to kill a man. This was nothing unusual - many people died during the time of the Roman empire. However this man was no ordinary man as outlined by James Allen Francis back in the 1926.

He was born in an obscure village. The child of a peasant woman.

He grew up in still another village, where he worked in a carpenter’s shop till he was 30. Then for three years he was an travelling preacher.

He never wrote a book. He never held an office. He never had a family or owned a house. He didn’t go to university. He never visited a really big city. He never travelled more than 350 km from the place where he was born. He did none of the things one usually associates with greatness.

He had no credentials but himself.

He was only 33 when the tide of public opinion turned against him. His friends ran away. He was turned over to his enemies and went through the mockery of a trial. He was nailed to a cross between two thieves. While he was dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing, the only property he had on earth. When he was dead he was laid in a borrowed grave through the pity of a friend.

Twenty centuries have come and gone, and today he is the central figure of the human race and the leader of mankind’s progress. All the armies that ever marched, all the navies that ever sailed, all the parliaments that ever sat, all the kings that ever reigned, put together, have not affected the life of men and women on this earth as much as that one solitary life.

It’s worth a thought.

WELCOME NEW STAFF ANA GAGIĆ

If you have been to visit the office this year you will have noticed the very warm, welcoming and professional new face of Ana. With her grandfather responsible for opening two new universities in Serbia and one in Macedonia, it comes as no surprise that she has a strong and passionate interest in education, children and colleges. Ana was born in, and spent her early years, including Year 1, in Montenegro, Serbia before moving with her family to a smaller city, Leskovac. Here she completed her formal schooling before graduating from a four year

University Diploma in Modern Design. It was during this time in 2004 that she met her future husband Miroslav whilst on a visit to the beach. They were married in 2006 and now have two children, Mia and Danilo. The family recently moved to Australia from Serbia following a call for Miroslav to take up the role of church pastor for the Seddon SDA Church.

Ana loves working with children and would love to become an Art teacher. Her other interests include reading - art history, biographies, theology, Christianity, countries and civilisations, and beaches. She speaks English, Spanish, German, Italian and Korean, while keeping fit by running four kilometres each day. Anna and family, welcome to Australia and

WE’RE PLEASED TO BE TAKING PART IN THE BE AN UPSTANDER - #IHAVEYOURBACK STUDENT POSTER COMPETITION!

The Department of Education and Training is running a poster competition open to students from all Victorian schools. The competition invites students to get creative and design a poster that promotes upstander behaviour and the theme #ihaveyourback.

What is upstander behaviour?

While it can be hard to see someone being bullied, it’s even harder to be the person being bullied.

An upstander is a person who speaks or acts in support of an individual or cause, particularly someone who intervenes on behalf of a person being attacked or bullied.

Page 6: Cover photo taken during this week's rock climbing trip€¦ · He was born in an obscure village. The child of a peasant woman. He grew up in still another village, where he worked

We can all do something to help. We can all be upstanders.

You can learn more about upstander behaviour by visiting #ihaveyourback.

You will also find a video created by the Department in partnership with Melbourne Football Club and Victorian Aboriginal Education Inc. that sends an important message about upstander behaviour and racist bullying.

The CompetitionNot only will the winning

student-artists receive a $200 voucher from their choice of JB HI-FI, Rebel Sports, or Eckersley’s Art and Craft but the winning posters will be printed and sent to all Victorian schools.

The winning student’s school will receive a $2,500 voucher from Eckersley’s Art and Craft.

we will be having a Year Six Puberty information night. This will commence at 6:30pm in the Year 3/4 building. On this night we will cover topics such as physical and emotional changes, hygiene and how to support your child as they go through these changes. It is a requirement that all Year Six students and parents attend. We will be giving out 1 PEP hour on the night.

PB4L - GOTCHA CARDS UPDATED

As we continue to focus on our 3Rs – Respect, Responsibility and Resilience, we are excited to announce that this term we have launched the ‘GOTCHA Cards’ initiative. When students are playing at recess and lunchtime, the yard duty teachers are looking for students who are demonstrating our values. These students will be given a ‘GOTCHA card’ which will then be placed into our lucky dip box. Each Monday morning, two cards will then be randomly drawn and the lucky two students will get to choose from a box of special prizes. This is another initiative that we are doing at Gilson College to promote a respectful and harmonious environment.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY (17TH MAY 2019)

Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual, national

event when all primary school children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote road safety, health, public transport and the environment.

WSTSD promotes the important message that active kids are healthy kids. The event encourages parents, carers and their children to build regular walking to and from school into their daily routine. Children need a minimum of 60 minutes exercise per day. Encouraging less driving and more walking aims to decrease dangerous vehicle congestion around schools and reduce carbon emissions from idling cars. Lastly, it is just a nice way to be part of your community. Visit www.walk.com.au/WSTSD to accesses a huge range of resources for your school.

On Friday 17th May, we are inviting all students to come and meet us at the Watervale Shopping Centre where we will walk together to school. We will be meeting at 8.00am and leaving no later than 8:10am. All students who participate will be provided with a piece of fruit and drink when we arrive at Gilson College.

STORY DOGS VOLUNTEERStory Dogs is a literacy

program that helps children across Australia learn to read. It is run by volunteers who come into schools with dogs and listen to children read. Its mission is to make reading fun for children, so they become confident lifelong readers. Currently Story Dogs has no volunteers in our area, and we would love to begin Story Dogs at Gilson College. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer (it would count toward PEP hours), please visit their website https://www.storydogs.org.au/how-to-volunteer. If you have any questions you can email [email protected] to assist you in

being qualified as a Story Dogs volunteer.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE 2019

As a part of the Year 10 Career Development program at Gilson College, students are required to undertake a week-long Work Experience placement at an organisation of their choosing. This opportunity will provide students with valuable insights into the industry and workplace in which they wish to pursue in the future.

In 2019, Work Experience placements will take place between: Monday 24 - Friday 28 June (last week of Term 2).

Students are encouraged to contact potential employers early, to avoid missing out

on securing a placement in their preferred industries. When approaching potential employers, students should call, email or speak to family contacts to assess if there are vacancies or whether organisations can accept a student for work experience. The submission deadline for Work Experience Arrangement Forms is FRIDAY 31 May.

Thank you to those students who have secured a work placement already.

If you have any questions, please contact our Year 10 Career Development Teachers;

YEAR 11 ROCK CLIMBING CAMP

On 6th-8th May 2019, the Year 11 Outdoor Recreation students went on a three-day rock climbing camp to the Grampian National Park and the Mount Arapiles State Park. We climbed insane heights which were far beyond our expectations, I had to face a fear of abseiling which I was afraid of for a long time and I was happy I got a chance to face that fear. We were surprised and what we were capable of during this camp and this was a great opportunity to have a great staff running and organising

this camp and to be apart of an amazing camp which teaches me to never give up no matter how hard the obstacle is. On Monday we kicked it off with rock climbing at the Grampian National Park and then hiked around half an hour to get to the cave which we were sleeping that night. The stars in the sky were beautiful and was an amazing view. On Tuesday we went to the Mount Arapiles National Park which had insane heights. On Wednesday we hiked to the final climbing wall where I abseiled and where we had our last climb before we go home to our families. It was a long drive back to school and we got to school around 6:30 pm and I was relieved that I came home however, we all accomplished a lot during this camp. ~ Alex Arena

Watching my own children become parents is an unexpected parenting joy.

Not in the light-hearted ‘your-turn-has-come’ way where older generations delight in watching their own children endure the same sleepless nights, naughty toddler behaviour and teenage rebelliousness that they experienced as parents.

The joy for me lies in watching my adult kids protect, teach, nurture and  support their children, in the time-honored way that parents have done for generations. This work, also known as generative parenting, was outlined by American psychologists and researchers Dollahite, Hawkins and Brotherson in the 1990’s.

Also known as mother work (and father work), generative parenting refers to the instinctive activities of parents that enable the next generation to survive and thrive. These activities range from providing kids with food and shelter and other basic needs through to developing more complex skills in their kids such as working with others, adapting to change and developing the resourcefulness needed for full independence.

Like most parents my daughters want to be the best parents they can be so they both devour parenting books, attend courses when they can and join online chat groups for support and ideas.

But it’s their mother work, their instinctive work, that’s their most potent parenting force. Here’s why.

Mother work is protective When my eldest daughter visits our house she does a quick reconnaissance trip through each room, lifting errant blind cords and removing heavy objects, to make our house safe for her two boys to move around. The protective side is strong.

Mother work is educativeWhen my youngest daughter patiently explains to her exuberant young three year old that she needs to allow other children to share her toys, she is doing important teaching work. That requires super patience.

Mother work is nurturant The safety my daughters provide when they wrap their arms around their children when they’ve fallen and hurt themselves comes naturally to them.

insightsPOSITIVE PARENTING

Page 18

Mother work is supportiveThe emotional support these young women provide to their children when they’ve been upset by the thoughtless or rough behaviours of siblings and friends is often hard work. But they are up to the task.

My daughters’ mother work will continue well into their children’s teen years and beyond. The nature of the work will change with each developmental stage but the intent of the work –to nurture, protect, teach and support – will stay the same.

Men can do this work too, but they do it differently. When a mother instinctively protects she generally draws her child closer before searching out the source of fear. There’ll be lots of cuddles before she puts a nightlight on to ease a child’s fear of the dark.

When a father instinctively protects he’s more likely to eliminate the source of fear, and skill his child up to fend for themselves. He’ll prove there’s nothing to be scared of when the light goes out, and show his child how to turn on the light when needed. Both are valid approaches, and are indicative of the gender differences in child-rearing.

This Mother’s Day, it’s my daughters’ instinctive mother work that I’ll celebrate, as that is real magic of parenting.

Happy Mother’s Day.
