COVID-19 Windsor and Essex County: March 20, 2020 to April 16, 2020

***Please note on Slide 7 “Distribution of COVID-19 Cases by Municipality” a correction was made to the number of residents in Kingsville and Lakeshore. The previous version of the slide showed 20% of COVID-19 cases were from Lakeshore whereas now only 4% are in Lakeshore. This is due to at the time of investigation, addresses pertaining to a long-term care home were close to the border of Kingsville and Lakeshore without a municipality identified (e.g., Woodslee). As a result a determination was made to allocate these cases to the nearest possible municipality which was identified as Lakeshore instead of Kingsville at the time. The figure has now been updated to reflect this change from Lakeshore to Kingsville result in a change in the distribution.

Purpose

• Providing an epidemiologic summary of COVID-19 activity in Windsor and Essex County (WEC) to date

Highlights

• At the time of reporting, there are 427 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in WEC between March 20th and April 16th.

• While cases in the community have started to decrease, more cases are being identified in long-term care and retirement homes in WEC.

• The incident rate of COVID-19 in WEC is higher compared to Chatham-Kent but slightly lower compared to Lambton County.

o The incident rate of COVID-19 in WEC is higher compared to Ontario. • Between April 6th and April 12th, approximately 16% of the tests returned as positive for COVID-

19 when tested for COVID-19 • The age of the cases range from 8 to 99 years (median of 55 years) with females accounting for

approximately 60% of all cases compared to approximately 40% in males. o Among females, 25% of all female cases were among those 80 years or older o Among males, 19% of all male cases were among those 50 to 59 years of age

• Approximately 63% of the cases reside in the City of Windsor. • Just under 30% of the cases reported close contact with a confirmed case as a potential source

of exposure to COVID-19. • 31% of the cases are healthcare workers and of these 134 healthcare workers, 31% travelled to

Michigan prior to becoming ill. • Of the COVID-19 cases reporting a risk factor, 22% had a cardiovascular condition while 11%

were obese and another 11% had asthma. • Fever (83%) was the most commonly reported symptom among cases with COVID-19 reporting

any symptoms followed by a cough (74%) and feeling fatigued (64%). • Approximately 46% of cases are still in self-isolation while 13% of cases have resolved. • 56% of cases that have died either had a chronic medical condition or had both, a chronic

medical condition and were immunocompromised. • The trajectory of the doubling rate for COVID-19 in Windsor is closer to three days.
