Fall ReflectionsPeter M.

On the 20th of October, my family and I went to Lyman Orchards. As soon as we got there, we headed straight for the bakery where we ordered a dozen cinnamon-sugar donuts. We sat down at a picnic table near the pond and I took a big bite out of my warm, sugary donut and washed it down with some delicious apple cider. After that, I walked around and saw some great autumn scenes. We then got in the car and drove to the apple orchard where I was tempted to take a big bite out of a juicy, red apple. The apple orchard is on a steep hill, so when we attempted to leave, we realized that the car was stuck in a deep gully. After much maneuvering, we managed to get the car out of the gully. We thought we were going to have to push the car out of the gully and up the hill!

These photos present details about the colors and experiences of fall in Connecticut. One picture shows the reflection of a tree’s different colors in the pond. Another picture contrasts brown, yellow, and blue corn against the different colored pumpkins. I captured a few examples of pumpkins because who goes to Lyman Orchards in the fall without looking at all the big, orange pumpkins? These photos from Lyman Orchards tell a story.

Lower School Art Connection Contest WinnerA Kindergartener at IDS, Timmy C. has won our first Lower School Connection drawing contest. He drew a pirate ship that is occupied by pirates. Below the boat, water twirls. In the ocean there are some fishes and in the sky a bird is flying. Good job Timmy!

I hope there are many other participants next time. If you would like to have your work in the newspaper see me, Camille M.

1: 175Every Little Bit CountsBy Nick B.

This week I want to tell you about a service project that I have been involved in. I want to raise awareness about the Amazing Grace Food Pantry, an important organization that I have had the opportunity to learn about. The Amazing Grace Food Pantry is a program run by the St. Vincent De Paul Place. They offer food free of charge to families who need food. Sixty-five percent of all their food is donated. Thirty-five percent of their food is purchased, through financial contributions, from the Connecticut Food Bank. The Pantry has seen a significant increase in the population that it serves. In July of 2008, the Amazing Grace Food Pantry served 660 households, but in July of 2009 the pantry helped 210 more families. That is a total of 870 households, and with an average 32 items per household, a total of 6,720 more food items. This year I am getting confirmed at my church and a part of the confirmation process is to complete community service hours. I went to different sources and someone told me about the Amazing Grace Food Pantry. I looked at their website and saw the deficit they were in. I sent out fliers around my neighborhood conveying important information about the services that they offer. I asked my neighbors to donate almost any type of food. Things that they do not accept are items that perish quickly. The following week after I put up fliers, I collected the food items and then gave them to the Amazing Grace Food Pantry.

If you would like to donate food you can contact Kathleen Kelly, at (860) 347-3222 or go directly to their building at 139 Main St. Extension Middletown Ct, 06457. It does not matter how much food you can donate, even the smallest amounts can make a difference to a family who needs it.

Sports and Entertainment

ALCS Playoff ReviewGame 1: When you’re in the postseason, you have to be on top of your game. You can’t make mistakes and you have to come through in a clutch. C.C. Sabathia did just that to help the Yankees win 4-1 over the Angels on Friday, October 16th. “That’s what we got him for,” Johnny Damon explained, “To shut teams down in the postseason.” The Angels, on the other hand, made 4 errors. Some say it was the cold weather. Others, such as the Angels’ center fielder, Torri Hunter, said, “It was just C.C. C.C. is the cold weather.”

Game 6: Game 6 of the ALCS between the Angels and the Yankees on Sunday was exciting for the Yankees because they made it to the World Series for the first time since 2003. The score was 5-2, even though each team got 9 hits. The Yankees scored three times in the 4th inning, including a 2-run single by Johnny Damon and a bases-loaded walk by Alex Rodriguez. They also scored in the 8th from two errors in a row. There were two bunts that were misfielded and thrown into the outfield, costing the Angels two runs.

NLCS Playoff ReviewGame 1: On Thursday, October 15th, Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers played Ryan Howard and the Philadelphia Phillies. Even though the Dodgers got 6 more hits, the Phillies came out on top. In the 5th inning, the Dodgers were on top 1-0 after a solo homerun in the 2nd. However, in this inning, both teams scored a combined total of 8 runs. The Phillies scored 5 on a home run and a double, and the Dodgers scored 3 on a home run and an error on Phillies’ second baseman, Chase Utley. To pad the Phillies’ lead, Raul Ibanez hit a 3-run shot in the 8th and moved the Phillies one step closer to the World Series.

Game 5: The Phillies won game 5 over the Dodgers on Wednesday, October 21st, advancing them into their second consecutive World Series. There were only 2 innings that the Phillies did not score in. There were a total of 7 combined homeruns in this game. The game seemed like a little league game, where one team just out matched the other.

Moving into the final weeks of the postseason, there were a few players to look out for. One of them was Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees. This year he had 5 homers and 11 RBIs. Another player is C.C. Sabathia who was voted MVP of the ALCS with 2 starts and 2 wins. Ryan Howard of the Phillies also had a great season. Ryan has had 8 straight postseason games with at least 1 RBI, tying Lou Gherig’s record for all-time, set over 70 years ago. Chase Utley, another source of power for the Phillies, is someone to watch out for.

Arts and EntertainmentStyle Studies: Lesson #2

In this issue of the Coyote Chronicle, we have a whole list of new trends for you. Expect to start dressing for the fall weather. Corduroys are a great trend for fall. They are stylish and perfect for colder weather. Pair a slouchy cardigan with them for the spectacular fall look.

One of our favorite trends for fall is sequins! Sequins can be hard to wear. Our tips are to wear them at night or to keep the rest of your outfit modest. You can wear sequins in all sorts of forms. Wear them in jewelry, a tank top, or if you are feeling a little bit more daring, leggings.

This fall is also all about leather. One of are favorite ways to wear it is as a motorcycle jacket. These leather jackets are a great way to finish almost any outfit. Just remember, don’t over do it with the rocker look. Keep it to a minimum with only accents of the leather. If you prefer a preppy style, try riding boots. These boots were originally made for horseback riding, but are now being made for the runway. These boots are sleek and classic. Tuck any pair of skinny jeans into them and you are good to go.

Lately the weather has been getting colder, which means it’s time for all of the fun cold weather accessories like hats, gloves, and coats. For coats and outerwear, we love a structured coat, such as a pea coat. Also, a pair of great leather or tweed gloves is always a good investment. They keep your hands warm, they last forever, and the fabric is so luxurious.

This season, we have also been seeing a lot of statement pieces. Statement jewelry is always a great way to punch up a boring outfit. An armful of bangles of assorted colors and sizes is always fabulous. Another way to make a POW is contrast colored jeans. The best way to describe them is black jeans with white spots or variations in the color. These jeans can be over the top, so keep the rest of your outfit plain and let your jeans get the attention.

Just to summarize, this season we love corduroys, sequins, and leather accents. You can wear all of the items in a variety of ways. Just be creative and don’t worry about everything always having to match. Just make sure it all coordinates, and remember to have fun and express yourself through fashion. Keep in mind that the cold weather is here, and a hoodie just will not cut it anymore. It’s time to break out the jackets and gloves to stay warm. To add a splash of fun to any boring outfit, try a big necklace or some crystal earrings.

Fashionably Yours,Mackenzie C. and Frankie E.

THE BASICS:

Game: Halo 3: ODST

Rated: Mature

System(s): Xbox 360

Halo 3:ODST, the new Halo game from Bungie, is an expansion to the already expanded trilogy. Taking place in the year 2552, between Halo 2 and 3, you are immediately put into action as an ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) in the city of New Mombasa. You are separated from your squad and are left to discover what has happened since you landed. This leaves you with an entire city to explore in the process.

The game offers 2 to 10 hours of game play depending on your skill level and how much time you spend playing the game in-depth. Using expansive environments and an interconnected storyline, the game can be completed in multiple ways. The game also offers many ways to get some quick achievements and add gamerscore.

On the multiplayer side, the game comes with two options. You can play firefight mode and fight endless waves of aliens with up to 4 friends via Xbox Live or you can play the second disk. The game offers many new features and is worth 60 dollars, but is not a big change from the traditional Halo franchise. It’s great for diehard Halo fans or someone that wants to play some great multiplayer games, but if you didn’t like other Halo games, this game is not for you.

Truthfully, the Halo franchise is starting to get old, its not fresh anymore, and its time for a change. It almost seems like Bungie knew it wasn’t enough game play for 60 dollars, so they threw in all these other features to make it better. Overall, Halo3: ODST gets a 7 out of 10.

If you want to convince me otherwise about a game, want a game reviewed for next time, or need gaming advise, come and see me in school, e-mail me at [email protected], or find me on Xbox Live.

Science and NatureHard-Wired The latest in technology from the from the perspective of Hayden H.By Hayden H.

I want to examine the differences between the Psp Go vs. the Psp 3000, both made by Sony. They are portable video game systems. They have two obvious design differences. The Psp Go is a slide-up while the Psp 3000 is bar like. The Go is all download, it doesn’t use umds that are the Psp’s standard disc. With the GO, you download your games from the playstation store. The Go is priced at around $250, while the 3000 is at around $170.

The Go is a beautiful system, but it has a few drawbacks. The battery isn’t very good and you can’t swap out batteries. It is current impossible to hack. Most shocking of all is that the Go doesn’t support a umd-to-digital deal where you can trade in your umd and get a free or discounted digital version. The Go also lacks a right analogue stick, the Psp’s main drawback. There are some good points about the Go. It is portable and it looks cool, plus it is convenient not have to have to go to the store to get a new game.

The 3000 has fewer negative aspects. The only negatives I can find is that it is a little bulky and it seems a little “Windows minded.” The 3000 can do everything that the Go can do except slide-up and fit in your pocket. The Psp 3000 is great. The games are fun, the screen is bright, it can play movies, music and pictures, and is reasonably cheap. If you already have a Psp, I don’t recommend the Go. If you don’t have a Psp, I recommend getting a Psp 3000 or a 2000.

I rate the Psp Go a 6.8 out of 10 and the Psp 3000 a 8.8 out of 10.

Cat CornerAdvocating for the Undercat! By J. Hannah F. Katy S.T. and Allwynne B

Meet Susan. Susan is a puree breed Himalayan cat. She has a lot of fun. She has a great personality and a heart full of love. This really may be the cat for you and your family. Susan is one of the first cats at CATALES. She was found in a park in New York when a pedestrian found her and brought her to the local pound.

The pound was full so they were going to leave her out in the wild, but then Mrs. Deb came to the rescue and now Susan lives with her. She is a great Himalayan cat.

.Do you know about the Himalayan Mountains? Well, there is also a cat that goes by the same name! There are many different kinds of Himalayan cats such as the Seal-point Himalayan, the Blue-point Himalayan, and the Chocolate Himalayan.

The first Himalayan was bred in Sweden and the U.S. in 1929 through an experimental breeding program. It wasn’t until the 1940s that a crossbreeding experiment was done between a Siamese and a Persian cat to make the modern Himalayan. The modern Himalayan has short, thick legs, large round sapphire eyes, and a dense, lush, silky coat. The modern Himalayan has a solid body and large, padded feet.

Their temperament is spirited like a Siamese, but they often have the gentle nature of a Persian. A Himalayan is not as demonstrative as a Siamese. All in all, a Himalayan is a beautiful, gentle cat.Source: The Ultimate Cat Book by David Taylor.

From Our Recipe Box to Your Lunchbox! By Caroline C. and Betty S.

Sugar CookiesFor Halloween or Any

Holiday!

Key Cooking TermsCreaming: mixing butter and sugar so that it is the texture of whipped cream cheese.Reminder:Cup= C Teaspoon= TspTablespoon= Tbs*Three teaspoons equal one tablespoon

INGREDIENTS

Cookies2 cups of flour1/4 of a teaspoon of salt1/2 teaspoon of baking powder1/2 cup of butter1 cup of sugar1 egg1/2 teaspoon of vanillaBased on a recipe from Entertainment by Martha Stewart

Icing3 1/2 to 4 cups of confectionary sugarA dash of salt (maybe a quarter of a teaspoon)1/2 a cup of butter (one stick)1 teaspoon of vanilla5-6 tablespoons of milkBased on a recipe from Joy of Cooking by Irma S. Rombauer and Marion Rombauer Becker

1) In a bowl whisk together the dry ingredients (not including sugar).

2) In an electric mixer cream the butter and sugar. Add egg and vanilla and mix some more. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mix little by a time until it is mixed together completely. Soon, Your cookie dough should be in a ball at the bottom of the electric mixture.

3) Take that ball out and wrap it in some kind of sticky cooking plastic and put that in the refrigerator for 30 minutes (or put it in the freezer for 15 minutes).

4) While the dough is in the refrigerator or freezer get ready for rolling out your dough. First preheat the oven to 400º. Sprinkle a handful of flour over the counter top and get your cookie cutters.

You can get any kind of cookie cutter for every occasion. I used pumpkins, black cats, and candy corn because Halloween is coming up, but it is totally up to you. If you don’t have the cookie cutter for the shape you want to make no worries. Draw the shape that you want on a piece of thin cardboard. Then carefully cut along the lines. This is your template that you will trace around the edges with a regular table knife onto the cookie dough.

6) Take your dough out of the refrigerator and cut the ball in thirds. Take one of the thirds and roll it out on your floured surface.

I would say that the perfect thickness is about a 1/8 of an inch thick, but that depends on how you like your cookies.

7) After you have rolled out your dough cut your cookies, trying to use as much of the dough as possible, roll the scraps up in a ball and roll it out to make more cookies until there is not enough dough to make another cookie. Do this with the other two-thirds of the dough.

8) Put all the cookies in pans that have been buttered, sprayed with Pam, or covered in parchment paper. Ask an adult to help you put the cookies into the oven. Set your timer for 10 minutes. After the timer goes off, have an adult check the cookies to see if they are done. If not, they aren’t keep them in the oven for a few minutes.

9) When the cookies are done, put the pans on cooling racks.

10)Now it is time to make your icing. Mix the first four ingredients on the list of ingredients (confectionary sugar, salt, butter, and vanilla). Then add tablespoons of milk until it is a nice, spreadable consistency. At anytime you may add any food coloring.

11) Lastly, ice your cookies. If you are going for perfection I would use an icing gun or the icing tips.

How you ice your cookies is completely up to you and your imagination!

Ask Andrew and Maggie

DEAR ANDREW AND MAGGIE,My older brother never lets me play his ipod touch. What should I do?

-Frustrated iPod Player

Dear Frustrated, Your brother probably doesn’t let you play his iPod Touch because he is afraid you might break it. Imagine if that iPod Touch was yours and you were playing it, and your brother asked you if he could play it. Would you stop listening to music or stop your game and let him play it? I don’t think so. I hope you will think of this when you ask your brother if you can play his iPod touch. Andrew M.

Dear Frustrated, You should really ask your brother and respect his answer. If you really want to use it, you simply should try to come to a compromise with your brother. You need to respect his answer. It is his property.

Maggie H.

DEAR ANDREW AND MAGGIE,I am feel bullied at school. What can I do?

-Bullied

Dear Bullied, You should stand up to the person who is bullying you because if you don’t they will probably keep bullying you. Standing up to a bully is the best thing to do because it shows that you are not the person to get pushed around. If standing up to the bully doesn’t work than you should involve a teacher or some person of authority in the school. I hope this advice can help you with your bullying problem. Andrew M.

Dear Bullied,

I think you should tell this person how you feel. If that does not help, it’s time to tell a teacher. There is not supposed to be any bullying at school. This is serious. No laughing matter!

Maggie H.
