Why WE Love the Coyote Chronicle

By Chris M. Why is it that 24 energetic middle school students dedicate their time to writing for the Coyote Chronicle? Why is it that 24 middle schoolers give up their Tuesday free lunch to write for the Coyote Chronicle?

Why is it that 24 middle school students are dedicated to writing for the Coyote Chronicle no matter what?

In my opinion, it is the desire to express themselves and pursue what they love, while also having a voice in the school. As many eighth graders who participated in the paper begin a new chapter in their lives, I believe that the newspaper will definitely have an impact on them. The newspaper has allowed us to express ourselves in a particular area that we love. For me, along with many other columnist, the newspaper is what we love best about school. Every Tuesday when I get to school, I anticipate with joy that the newspaper meeting is today.

The newspaper is something spectacular; it allows us to be who we want to be. We all have different opinions, likes, or dislikes. While writing for the newspaper, we all have expressed these opinions in ways that are fun and interesting for us. We have Chloe M. articulating her apparent love of books, and then Kate S. expressing her opinion of Justin Beiberʼs fame. We have Katy S-T capturing the moments in nature, and then we have Patrick K. arguing about whether chess should be a sport. While these are only a few of the many articles that the IDS newspaper published this year, they are strong examples of the newspaperʼs columnists writing about what they love best in our changing society.

That is really what the newspaper is about. There is no extra credit or someone forcing us to contribute to the newspaper. It is all about our will to express ourselves in our own unique ways, which are not typically included in our daily work at school. If you look back, to the first Coyote Chronicle in the fall of 2009, we have lots of energetic students who look like they want to have fun. Thatʼs truly what the newspaper is really about. A few months ago, at a Board of Trustees Meeting, some of the newspaper staff were asked why they write for the newspaper. After many explanations, they arrived at the simple conclusion that writing for the Coyote Chronicle is fun.

As the Coyote Chronicle develops and grows over the years, it is essential to remember that every columnist writing for the newspaper chooses to write and loves to. We all hope that the last edition of the 2010-2011 Coyote Chronicle continues to amaze you, while being informative and most of all fun!

The Chronicle Staff Celebrate Two Years of Publication

By Tyler M. This school year has been a great year in sports for people all around the US. Even in Connecticut, where there are no professional sports teams, sports fans had something to cheer about. Three of the highlights from this year in the sports world were the Vince Lombardi trophy coming back to Green Bay, the NCAA Menʼs Basketball Tournament, and the youngest NBA MVP in history.

Super Bowl XLV between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers was definitely a memorable game. Packersʼ QB Aaron Rodgers was nothing short of heroic in this yearʼs Super Bowl. Green Bay came out on top, and the final score was 31-25. It is no surprise that Rodgers was named Super Bowl MVP, with 3 TDs, 304 passing yards, and 0 interceptions. It was truly a special moment for Green Bay and Aaron Rodgers, the young QB. Iʼm sure that Packers fans everywhere will be cheering much more in these years to come as Aaron Rodgers becomes better and better through his years in the NFL.

This winter, there were many upsets in College Basketball. What would you define as an upset? An upset could be when your dog runs away, or maybe when you forget to study for the big test. How about when a team that isnʼt even supposed to be in a tournament of 64 teams makes it to the Final Four? Welcome the madness that is March Madness, the NCAA Menʼs Basketball Tournament. VCU, or Virginia Commonwealth, was not even supposed to be a part of this tournament. This year, instead of 64 teams playing in the tournament, 68 teams competed, and a preliminary round of 8 teams was added before the tournament even started. VCU was one of those 8 teams. They made it to the Final Four, where they faced the 8 seed Butler Bulldogs. Butler ended up topping them, but still, the unforgettable journey for the underdog VCU Rams was not overlooked. In the championship, the 3 seed UConn Huskies faced the Butler Bulldogs. The final score was 53-41 UConn, the lowest scoring championship game ever! Even though this game was not a great competition, UConn still got the win and gave Connecticut something to cheer about.

This yearʼs MVP, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls is only 22 years-old. He entered the NBA just 3 years ago at age 19. At age 19, he was named NBA Rookie of the Year, and now at age 22 he was named the NBA Most Valuable Player. Derrick Rose, out of the University of Memphis, is the youngest player ever to receive this honor. His career average points-per-game is just about 21 points, and at the end of the 2011 season, Rose joined Michael Jordan and LeBron James as the only player in the past 30 years with 2,000 points and 600 assists in a single season. He led the Chicago Bulls to a final record of 62-20, and ultimately led them to the Eastern Conference Finals where they lost to the Miami Heat. Truly a great point guard, he will no doubt be one of the most feared players in the NBA in the years to come. And the scariest part? Heʼs only 22.

I am very thankful for having the opportunity to write a sports column for the Coyote Chronicle, and I would like to thank everyone who has read my articles in the past. It has been a great two years to write about sports. As this year in sports comes to a close, I look forward to another great year next year. Iʼm sure it will be nothing short of amazing.

IDS Helping Hands Service Day

On April 27, the entire IDS community put their busy lives and usual schedule on hold for a day to participate in a group day of service. This day involved both a service to the local community as well as to communities in Japan. A few months ago the country of Japan was devastated by a massive tsunami shortly followed by a destructive earthquake that left many people dead or injured and destroyed thousands of homes and other buildings. These problems were made far worse when the tsunami caused serious problems at a large nuclear power plant. This now threatens to cause an explosion that could make a large area around the power plant impossible for people to live in.

Americares is a charity group that immediately began to raise money to send to Japan to help out the survivors. In order to help Americares in this charitable goal, IDS third grade teacher, Mrs. Thibbs, organized a Walk-A-Thon for students and teachers at IDS. Students of all ages were given forms and asked to get friends, family members, neighbors, and anyone else to sign those forms and give them a certain amount of money to go to Americares. On Wednesday, the 26th, the students handed these forms and the money they had collected in to teachers to be given to Americares. Then, in order to

show their support for Americares IDS held a Walk-A-Thon that lasted most of the day. Students and teachers walked off campus to clean up the roads and parks near IDS. One group, made up of fifth through eighth graders and their teachers, walked to Wadsworth Falls, ate lunch and returned to the IDS campus. At the same time, the rest of the students and teachers from IDS walked to Pickam Park, ate lunch and returned to IDS. Along the way, IDS students helped people who lived in the neighborhoods where they walked, not just people in Japan. They did this by picking up any litter they found along the way and putting it into large trash bags that the teachers provided.

When the Walk-A-Thon was over, students and teachers alike were exhausted from all the walking they had done, and were glad it was over. However, they were filled with a wonderful sense of accomplishment because they knew that the work they had done that day would go a long way to helping people in desperate need. All totalled up IDS raised an impressive sum of money to donate to Americares, exceeding $6000.00. The entire IDS community would like to thank Mrs. Thibbs and all the other people who worked hard to make this wonderful day of community service possible.

Nicole Interviews Ms. K.

By Nicole D. Our last article of the year is about Ms. Kleederman. She teaches 6th grade English and 8th grade history seminar with Ms. Warner. She first heard about IDS when she was a senior at Wesleyan when she was writing about education. Ms. Kleederman decided to visit the school and help Mrs. Ficke, Ms. Knopp, Mr. Parnes, and Ms. Warner teach history that year. This connection occurred three years ago! Now she is just like family to everyone in the school.

Ms. Kleederman teaches history and English, but she is an advisor as well! She also is the founder of the IDS newspaper and encourages everyone to write an article. If you are interested, let Ms. Kleederman know! She would be so happy to have more people write for the newspaper.

Outside of school, Ms. Kleederman likes to hike and ski. She enjoys adventuring in Maine and spending time with family.

Ms. Kleederman is a wonderful advisor and teacher who always encourages you to be yourself and to be creative.

Lassi is a refreshing drink made basically out of yogurt. It is popular among Indians and Pakistanis. The recipe may differ slightly depending on a person and the personʼs preference. Here is how my family makes it and it is super delicious.

ProcedureFirst take yogurt and put it in the blender. Next add sugar salt and cumin seed. Blend till mixture is thin, but do not liquefy. Lassi is usually a little thick. After its prepared, one may add salt or sugar according to their wish. I personally like it sweetened. Ingredients

• Yogurt – 1 cup• Sugar-2 tbsp.• Salt – a pinch • Cumin seeds (crushed) - 1/6 tsp.

The Gasior ReportHelping you to dine well in Connecticut

Last week I stopped by one of my favorite restaurants in Middletown (and by far my favorite Japanese restaurant) to give it a proper review-Mikado Japanese Steak House and Sushi Bar. The overall atmosphere of this establishment makes you feel like you are in Japan- except for the quilt featuring the states of America that hangs in the corner, of course. Authentic Japanese music plays in the background. Posters of Japanese writing decorate the walls and paper lanterns decorate the ceiling.

I always start off with a bowl of their amazing miso soup. For those who donʼt know, miso soup is a soybean paste soup (it tastes way better than it sounds) with chives, seaweed, and tofu. If it tastes too bland, soy sauce is available at every table. Next Iʼll either have their chicken teriyaki or sashimi dinner (sashimi is sushi without the rice). Both are amazing. The chicken is always superb, served on a bed of onions and peppers and with other vegetables. The sashimi dinner is fantastic as well- I canʼt exactly review it, as everyoneʼs tastes are different. I like salmon and tuna sashimi, others might like squid and conch, etc.

For other things on the menu- their crème caramel custard is terrific. If you donʼt like Japanese, the restaurant also features crispy chicken, fried chicken in a semi-sweet sauce. Delish!

Next time you have a craving for Japanese, make your first stop Mikado. It really is a memorable experience (even if you go every week!).

BUNNIES Cozy, cuddly, fuzzy, friendly, furry, jubilant, sweet, kind. If you like hamsters, then you will love rabbits! They snuggle and tend to form very strong relationships with their family. Wouldnʼt you like to bring a rabbit into your life?

Rabbits also have a very long life space, so be prepared to love your bunny for a long time. When you buy a cage for your rabbit, you want it to be: 1) spacious 2) easy to clean 3) easy for your rabbit to hop in and out of. This will provide an easy way for you to play with your bunny. It will also allow you to care for your rabbit easily.

It is important to feed your rabbit well. You should feed your rabbit plenty of fresh grass, hay, greens, and vegetables. The right diet is critical to keeping pet rabbits healthy. It is also very important to brush your rabbit.

Chloe’s Book Corner

By Chloe M.Last week I read a book called Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine. This is my new favorite book because itʼs

inspirational and happy, as well as sad.

This book is about ten year old Caitlin, who has Aspergerʼs syndrome, a type of autism. Everything always seemed black and white to Caitlin, and nothing made sense. If anything was confusing, her brother, Devon, helped her understand. When Devon died from a school shooting, Caitlin was not sad at all. She says that she wasnʼt sad at the funeral or when she heard that her brother had died. After reading the definition of closure, Caitlin realizes that it is what everyone needs. In her search of closure, she finds out that black and white is surrounded with other colors too, and those colors are important for happiness and healing.

This book had me hooked, and Iʼm sure youʼll enjoy it as much as I did. I even did my final book talk on this book for English class. This is my new favorite book, and I recommend it to anyone.

Dress Mania!

By Betty S. Even though the royal wedding seemed like months ago, I am still raving about Kate Middletonʼs TWO Wedding Dresses. Of course I have to write an article about dresses because of the upcoming events at school that require dresses. For example, the graduation dance is an event that allows many girls to think about and wear fabulous dresses.

Kate Middleton wore two dresses on her wedding day. Kate Middletonʼs first dress was a beautiful Alexander McQueen Ball gown with a lace standup collar and lace sleeves. It seemed very princess-like. It was perfect for the ceremony because even though it was so elegant, it was very modest. The second wedding dress for the party was my favorite. It was a strapless dress with an A- line skirt and a jeweled waist band. She topped the outfit with an adorable fuzzy sweater. She looked fantastic! Kate Middleton is a fashion icon and millions of people around the world waited to see what her dresses would look like. "Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing," the Royal palace said. They also described that, " Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterizes Alexander McQueen's work. Miss Middleton worked closely with Sarah Burton in formulating the design of her dress."

Her dresses were beautiful. I canʼt wait to see what other wonderful dresses Middleton will wear. For the graduation dance, dresses similar to Kateʼs are very popular. Not a wedding dress of course, but a tightly fit bodice with a waist band and a skirt that poofs out slightly. I love how Kate wore the little sweater with her strapless dress to be more modest and comfortable. I think the Kateʼs style is very classic and elegant, perfect for a princess!

Portal 2: A Phenomenal New Release

By Peter M. If you like action and strategic packed games, Portal 2 is the game for you. When Valve released the Orange Box with Half Life and Team , they decided to add on a little game called Portal 1. Portal 1 sold 4 million copies in the first 6 weeks it was so popular. After Valve realized its popularity, they decided to make a Portal 2 with a longer campaign and multiplayer. On April 19 2011, there were lines out of the video game stores in the USA. In the first week Portal 2 sold way over 2 million copies.

Portal 2 is a game where you use a portal gun to shoot portals. A computer genius, Glados, traps you in giant rooms where you have to use your portal gun to portal out of the rooms. There is a campaign single player mode and a campaign co-op mode where you can play with a friend. Also there is a mode where you can play online with people or against them. The game is for PS3, XBOX 360, and computer. (PC or Mac) However, once you buy it for PS3 or XBOX you can make a steam account and download the game for free.

Recently, on May 10, Valve released a new edition where you can make your own courses and have your friends try to get to the end. The price for Portal 2 right now is around $55 to $65, but in a few months it will lower. Having Portal 2 and Portal 1 myself, I can say that Portal 2 is definitely a great game.

Speedy Apple Tarts: (serves 4 semi-vegetarians, vegetarians, and ovo-lacto vegetarians)! " "

Nutrition Facts

Ingredients

½ pound frozen puff pastry thawed2 granny smith or other cooking apples2 tablespoons of packed brown sugar½ teaspoon of ground cinnamon1/8 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg2 tablespoons of cold, unsalted butter cut into small bits4 tablespoons of apricot jamvanilla ice cream for serving (optional)

Instructions-Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.-Lightly grease the baking sheet.-On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry to ¼ inch thick.-Cut out four six inch rounds (try turning a saucer or salad plate upside down and cutting around it with the tip of a sharp knife).-Transfer the rounds to the prepared baking sheet.-Peel, core, and halve the apples lengthwise.-Thinly slice the apples and arrange half an apple on each pastry round, overlapping the slices slightly.-In a small bowl, combine the sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg.-Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the tarts.-Sprinkle the tarts with the bits of butter.-Bake on the middle rack of the preheated oven until the pastries are golden brown, about 25 minutes.-When the tarts are finished baking, transfer them to a rack to cool for 10 minutes.-Meanwhile microwave the jam on High (100%) power for 45 seconds.-Using a pastry brush, brush the warm tart tops lightly with the clumps of solid apricot.
