Feature Project - Determining the amount of RAP in HMA in OntarioThisprojectiscarriedoutthroughthepartnershipwiththeMinistry of Transportation Ontario (MTO), theOntarioHotMixProducersAssociation (OHMPA),DBA Engineering Ltd., and Natural Sciences andEngineeringResearchCouncilofCanada(NSERC).

The research involved a comprehensive laboratoryinvestigation on the long term performance of theRecycled Hot Mix (RHM) with 20% and 40%RAP content and compares the resultswith controlmixtureswithoutRAP.ConventionalSuperpave12.5mm surface coarse mixtures were designed withfourdifferentbindersperformancegrade:PG58-28,

Both CIR and CIREAM meet the criteria fora sustainable pavement because of the safe, efficient, economic, and environmentally friendlycharacteristics. For the labperformance, JankiwillbecarryingouttestsonmixedsamplesobtainedfromSouthernandNorthernOntario.Tests suchasDynamicModulus,Fatigue Beam and Thermal Stress RestrainedSpecimen Tests (TSRST) will be carried out forperformanceevaluations.

Samples of Dynamic Modulus Testing

For thefield testing, different sections of roadwayswhich have used these technologies will behighlighted. Firstly, a pavement distress evaluationfor the designated sections would be conducted. In addition, samples would be extracted from thedesignated sections to be evaluated for TensileStrengthRatio(TSR)andretainedstability.

Once field and lab data has been collected, anevaluation and statistical analysis will be carriedout with the data. It will include development ofguidelinesforusageandevaluatebestpractices.Thiswouldbeofgreatvalue for furtherdevelopmentofthesetechnologiesintheindustry.
