During the 1930s and 1940sthe Photo League was a selfsupporting camera club, photoschool, and gallery in New YorkCity (much like CPS). Itsmembership included suchnotable photographers as PaulStrand, Edward Weston, AnselAdams and Richard Avedon. ThePhoto League felt that it had apublic purpose, that being todocument the many aspects oflife in New York City. It heldmany public photographicexhibitions, some of which werelater published as books. Unfortunately, during theparanoid post-war politicalclimate, the work of the PhotoLeague was taken to be a“preoccupation with the seamyside of life” focusing ondiscovered moments that wereoutside of the idealized imageryof “advertised America”. In 1947the US Attorney General allegedthat the group was a “communistand subversive organization” andin 1951 the group disbanded.(source – American Photographyby Miles Orvell, OxfordUniversity Press, 2003) I feel that, like the PhotoLeague, the ClevelandPhotographic Society (CPS)should serve some publicpurpose. With its long andhistoric presence in the city ofCleveland, CPS could and shouldemerge as the preeminentorganization representing the artof photography in NortheastOhio. I would like to put togetherand lead a group of CPS membersto work on defining a publicpurpose for CPS, and movingahead to begin to carry out thatpurpose. I would envision a

resultant exhibition of CPSmember photographsrepresenting life in NortheastOhio in all of its multi-facetedaspects. The group’s work wouldentail initial brainstormingsessions to further define thepurpose and scope of thisinitiative. The work might thencontinue to possibly includesoliciting support from the city, region, foundations, museums, educational institutions etc.,arranging exhibitions, or evenpublishing. The possibilities aremany. I feel that a project such asthis would help to rejuvenate theclub, would elevate photographyas a serious art form in NortheastOhio, and would give allmembers of CPS a public purposefor which we would all be proud. If you are interested inworking on this project, pleasegive me a call at 440-255-7663.Once I have names of interestedmembers, we will set up an initialmeeting to begin defining ourpublic purpose and then carryingout the project. Judges’ Critique Often Helpful Mary Rynes Demonstrates with Before and After Photos

At a recent competition, Mary Rynes listened to the judges’ adviceregarding changes that could be made to improve her photos. Beloware two such examples. In the first example, the lily was placed high inthe frame without much space around it. The judges commented that itcould use more space around the flower on the top as well as the sides.Mary made this change and was pleased with the resulting image. In the second example, The lily was originally facing left. For mostpeople, it is more pleasing to see the flower pointing right. This phe-nomenon may have something to do with the way our brains work. Inany case, judges pointed this out and Mary made the change inPhotoshop. The result can be seen below.

I’m excitedabout ourdecision tomove out ofthis tired-looking clubroom, thetired-lookingstairway, the

tired-looking entrance, in atired-looking part of downtownCleveland. We hope to enhanceBroadview Heights with theaddition of our 118 year oldphotography society. We may behistorical in years, but soon to berevitalized by a fresh new clubroom on a campus area in asuburban setting. It may bejumping the gun, since nothing isfinalized yet, but I would like toshare some ideas that might helpCPS be even more effective in thefuture. Whether or not we settledown in Broadview Hts. orelsewhere, most of these ideascould be implemented. What I’d like to see...1. The new location becoming afamiliar site for all thesurrounding suburbs as well asCleveland. It will be a place wewould be pleased to inviteguests.2. More fundamental and digitalclasses offered to help pay forthe increased cost of having anewer place for our exclusiveuse.3. A rotating exhibit of photosshowcasing the talents of ourmembership, illustrating whatphotography is all about.Visitors would see the variety of

creative photography we areconstantly producing.4. Start out with an Open Houseto welcome Broadview Hts.residents and others interested inphotography. This would be agood way to present informationabout our programs, field tripsand other learning opportunities.5. Establish procedures forsending publicity to all areapublications and other locationson a regular basis.6. Dedicate wall space tocontinually post news of interestfor our members, news of othercompetitions, etc.7. Have an annual CPS exhibitionof member photos open to thepublic. Excellent PRopportunities.8. Informal sessions to viewDVD’s, videotapes, and

discussions of photographicinterest. This would be another great usefor our digital projector.9. More emphasis on maintainingour web site as a source for-up-to-date info on events, competition scores, members’photo galleries, etc. The internetsite could be one of our strongesttools to attract new members.10. Share some programs withother photo groups. Good way tomeet other local photographers.11. Possible workshops orseminars as a revenue source. I’m sure there are many moreways for CPS to have a greatimpact wherever it ends up. Thismove holds a lot of potential forthe future if we all pitch in tomake it more successful thanever. JP

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

ANNUAL AWARDSRevised 3/23/1997

The annual awards aretraditionally presented at theSociety’s end of the yearbanquet. Theyare of four types:1. Accumulated Points.2. Year End Competition.3. Memorial Awards.4. Special Awards asannounced by Chairpersonsduring the year.

ACCUMULATED POINTS

The individuals with thehighest point totals in eachclass and category, of eachdivision, accumulated duringthe year’s regularcompetitions, earn theseawards.

Places are designated as 1st,2nd, and 3rd based on pointtotal.Ties are not broken andtherefore more than oneaward may be given for any ofthese places.

If the total of participants inany class is less than 11 thenumber of places shall bereduced as:

6 to 10 participants – 2 places1 to 5 participants – 1 place

YEAR END COMPETITION

This competition enables themembership to enter whatthey feel is their best work ofthe year for overall judging. Each Division Chairperson willannounce in April the numberof entries allowed forsubmittal.

Entries must be work that wasentered in regular competitionduring the past year. Theyneed not have been winners orhave placed.

Judging shall be done in closedsession by other than Societymembers.

Judges eligible for a divisionmay not have judged anyregular competition during theyear for that division. Theymay have judged for anotherdivision.

The competition is to be heldin a location and withequipment that would beconsidered “in line” with whatCPS provides at regularcompetitions so that a fairpresentation of the members’work is accomplished. (ie:

adequate lighting for viewingprints; a large screen, abright projector, and a darkroom for slides).

Ties are broken. Places aredesignated as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd

based on point total and tiebreaking votes.

If the total of participants inany class is less than 11 thenumber of places shall bereduced as:

6 to 10 participants – 2 places1 to 5 participants – 1 place

Only one place is to beawarded per person percategory in a division. However, one person can wina Memorial type award andalso win a place in a category. For example, if the judgingwould indicate a person shouldwin Slide of the Year and 1st

place/Class A in PictorialSlides, this person would notreceive the 1st place award. Ifhowever, the former 1st placephotograph was a scenic, andit was this division’s year toselect a recipient for the JohnModdejonge award, it wouldbe eligible for this award.

Print/Slide of the Year winnersin each division, havingreceived the highest judgingscores, are considered to bethe most prestigious and willbe displayed in the Society’sclubroomfor the coming year.
