Commodore’s CommentsBy Ron Davis, Commodore

This is my final Masthead article as Commodore of CBYC and after four years in this role it is time for me to move aside and let someone else take on this position with the Club. I would certainly like to thank the Membership for their sup-port over the past four years as you have been most helpful in supporting me and the initiatives we have undertaken. My intention when starting in the position was to leave the role with the Club in an improved condition and I hope I have met that challenge on your behalf. We enjoy many benefits as Senior and Social members of CBYC and it is in our mutual best interest to protect and to enhance what we have going forward. When I took on this role in 2010, my goal was to guide both the Club and the Board based on a “4-Pillar Strategy”. Most structures whether they are a chair, a table or a building require 4 columns or corners to support the structure in a stable manner. The strategy that I followed is below. They are not in any specific order of importance as they are each equally important and overlap and interact with each other to work together to build a successful Club.

P.O. BOX 88062 • 2975 KINGSTON RD. • SCARBOROUGH, ONT. M1M 1N0 • 416-261-0537 • EMAIL: [email protected] • INTERNET: www.cbyc.ca

4-Pillar Strategy:

Financial Control• Set a realistic budget and stay within spending limits• Reduce late payments, bad debts and financial leakage• Maintain a competitive fee structure

Membership• Create a positive Club environment that Members can be

proud to say that they are a member of and be proactive in attracting new members

Bylaws and Rules• Review Bylaws and Rules and adjust them to suit the

on-going needs of the Club• Risk Management: while there are risks involved in the

operation of a Yacht Club, ensure that our Board makes sound decisions concerning those risks in the operation of the Club

Build Club Image• Ask that the Board Members lead by example to the

Membership, in following Rules and Bylaws• Treat reciprocal visitors and other guests to CBYC well as

they are a voice to new potential members• Maintain a positive relationship with other GTA Yacht

Clubs in the Council of Commodores

The increase cash reserve that we have generated in the past 10 years has allowed the Club to spend money in areas to improve our facility while maintaining a competi-tive fee structure. In the latter part of the 1990’s the Club had a bank loan in the $100k range and we operated without a cash reserve. We intend to maintain the reserve at current levels, however, the Club should be cautious not to allow the reserve to grow in an un-controlled manner... as after all it is your money and you cannot take a portion of the reserve with you if you decide to leave the Club.

While there have been some contentious issues tabled, discussed and voted on throughout my tenure as Commo-dore, I have truly enjoyed the process and leading our Club on this journey. I am looking forward to my role as imme-diate Past Commodore in hopes of continuing to support club operations and the membership at large. Thank you!

CBYC - Page 4

Unfortunately, the boating season is winding down in many parts of the country and it is time to start thinking about protecting your valuable recreational asset. Winterizing a boat reminds me of the old commercial that says “pay me now or pay me later.” The time and effort you spend now will have a definite effect on your boat’s performance, or lack of it, and certainly save you time, effort and money come spring. You should remember that your insurance policy may not cover damage done by lack of maintenance or neglect.

The best place for your boat to be during the winter is out of the water, under cover, in a climate-controlled boat storage area. This, how-ever, can be expensive. If don’t have this option perhaps you should consider shrink-wrapping your boat. This, too, is a little expensive but provides a very protective cover. Short of these two items, make sure that your boat is well covered with a tarp or some other sturdy cover.

Your first step in winterizing should be to make a checklist of all items that need to be accomplished. Check the owner’s manual of your boat and motor(s) for manufacturer’s recommendations on winteriza-tion. If you are a new boat owner, perhaps you should employ the assistance of a friend with experience in winterizing or hire a profes-sional to do the job. The following is a generic outline of areas which should be of concern to you, however, there are many resources on the Internet with more detailed and specific information.

Inboard Engine(s) - You should run the engine(s) to warm it up and change the oil while it is warm. This tends to allow impurities to be drained away with the oil. You should also change the oil filter(s). Flush the engine(s) with fresh water. You should circulate antifreeze through the manifold by using a pickup hose from the waterpump to a bucket of antifreeze. Start the engine and allow the antifreeze to circulate until water starts to exit the exhaust. This process will vary slightly depending on whether you have a “Raw Water” cooling sys-tem or an “Enclosed Fresh Water” cooling system. While you’re in the engine room you should also change the fluid in your transmission. Remove spark plugs and use “fogging oil” to spray into each cylinder. Wipe down the engine with a shop towel sprayed with a little fogging oil or WD-40.

Stern Drive(s) - You should thoroughly inspect the stern drive and remove any plant life or barnacles from the lower unit. Drain the gear case and check for excessive moisture in the oil. This could indicate leaking seals and should be repaired. Clean the lower unit with soap and water. If your stern drive has a rubber boot, check it for cracks or pinholes. Grease all fittings and check fluid levels in hydraulic steering or lift pumps. Check with your owner’s manual for additional recom-mendations by the manufacturer.

Outboard Engine(s) - Flush engine with fresh water using flush muffs or similar device attached to the raw water pickup. Let all water drain from the engine. Wash engine down with soap and water and rinse thoroughly. Disconnect fuel hose and run engine until it stops. It is important to follow a step by step process to make sure that all fuel is drained from the carburetor to prevent build-up of deposits from evaporated fuel. Use fogging oil in the cylinders to lubricate the cylinder walls and pistons. Apply water resistant grease to propel-ler shaft and threads. Change the gear oil in the lower unit. Lightly lubricate the exterior of the engine or polish with a good wax.

Fuel - Fill your fuel tank(s) to avoid a build up of condensation over the winter months. Add a fuel stabilizer by following the instructions on the product. Change the fuel filter(s) and water separator(s).

Bilges - Make sure the bilges are clean and dry. Use soap, hot water and a stiff brush to clean up any oil spills. Once the bilges are clean, spray with a moisture displacing lubricant and add a little antifreeze to prevent any water from freezing.

Fresh Water System - Completely drain the fresh water tank and hot water heater. Isolate the hot water heater by disconnecting the in and out lines and connect them together. Pump a non-toxic antifreeze into the system and turn on all the facets including the shower and any wash-down areas until you see the antifreeze coming out. Also put non-toxic antifreeze in the water heater.

Head - Pump out the holding tank at an approved facility. While pumping, add fresh water to the bowl and flush several times. Use Vanish crystals or whatever your owner’s manual recommends that will not harm your system and let sit for a few minutes. Again add fresh water and pump out again. Add antifreeze and pump through hoses, holding tank, y-valve, macerator and discharge hose. Again, check your owners manual to make sure that an alcohol-based anti-freeze won’t damage your system.

Interior - Once you have taken care of the system you should remove any valuables, electronics, lines, PFD, fire extinguishers, flares, fenders, etc. Over the winter these items can be cleaned, checked and replaced as necessary. Open all drawers and lockers and clean thoroughly. Turn cushions up on edge so that air is able to circulate around them or, better yet, bring them home to a climate controlled area. Open and clean the refrigerator and freezer. To keep your boat dry and mildew-free you might want to install a dehumidifier or use some of the commercially available odor and moisture absorber products such as “No Damp,” “Damp Away” or “Sportsman’s Mate.”

Out of Water Storage - pressure wash hull, clean barnacles off props and shafts, rudders, struts and trim tabs. Clean all thru-hulls and strainers. Open seacocks to allow any water to drain. Check the hull for blisters and if you find any that should be attended to you might want to open them to drain over the winter. While you’re at it, why not give the hull a good wax job? It is probably best to take the batter-ies out of the boat and take them home and either put them on a trickle charger or charge them every 30-60 days.

In Water Storage - Close all seacocks and check rudder shafts and stuffing boxes for leaks, tighten or repack as necessary. Check your battery to make sure it is fully charged, clean terminals, add water if necessary and make sure your charging system is working. Check bilge pumps to ensure they are working and that float switches properly activate the pumps and that they are not hindered by debris. Make sure either to check your boat periodically or have the marina check it and report to you. If in an area where the water you are docked or moored in actually freezes, you should have a de-icing device or bubbling system around your boat.

By following some of the above suggestions, and suggestions given from the links provided, you should be in good shape for the win-ter. Do not, however, neglect to consult your owner’s manuals for manufacture’s recommendations on winterizing your boat and other systems. If you have not done a winterization job before or don’t have an experienced friend to rely on seek out a professional to do the job for you.

From the seCretaryBy Tony Haslam, Secretary

In this issue of the Masthead you will find notices of the two general meetings that bring a conclusion to the club year ending 2014. The notices are in accord with requirements as stated in Bylaw 23.3.

The Budget Meeting is scheduled for 19:30 hours on Wednesday October 22, 2014 at the clubhouse The Budget meeting was originally conceived to allow members to have their input into the planned projects and resulting finances for the upcoming club year. Initially this was included in the AGM but was found to be too time consuming and restric-tive when attempting to complete in the same evening as elections etc.

The Annual General Meeting scheduled for 19:30 hours Wednesday November 19th. 2013 at the Royal Canadian Legion, 100 Salome Drive Scarborough. The Annual General Meeting is to provide members with reports on the business of the club and hold the election of the club board of officers for the upcoming club year. Any senior active member of good standing is eligible to serve on the board. A complete description of duties and responsibilities of each position can be found by referring to Bylaw 14 or the Club organiza-tion and terms of reference. Potential candidates can signify their intentions by informing the nomination committee or by nomination from the floor at the AGM, no second is required. The term of “good standing” is taken to mean that a member is current in payment of club fees and club obliga-tions (labour hours assigned).

Please make sure that both the above meetings are given “must attend” significance on your calendar. The club needs as much input as it can get from all members to ensure that operations for the upcoming new club year addresses their needs and expectations properly.

membership mattersBy Kate Pilling, Membership Director

Hello fellow members. Everyone seems to be talking about the summer we didn’t have, but I hope you were able to get out on the water and enjoy the days that we had good weather. As we end an old, and begin a new membership year, I am sad to say goodbye to the resigning members. Some have chosen to retire from boating, and some have left for other reasons, but on positive note I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new members who have joined CBYC, both Senior and Social. Our membership numbers are lower than last year, however we hope to regain and increase our membership with new members from the Toronto Boat Show in January 2015.

My term as your Membership Director is coming to an end and I have decided not to run for the position for the 2014/2015 season. I hope to be able to continue to con-tribute to the Membership Committee in another capacity. I could not have done this job without the support of the committee members so I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Maurine Seguin, Member-ship Chair, who has assisted me with scheduling and inter-viewing applicants, presenting new membership packages, external club research and general membership support, Peggy O’Neill, Membership Administrator, who process-es the applications, profiles, insurance and various other administration duties, Bob Dallas and Mike Heindl, for the Boat Show schedule & setup, Bill Papizzo for collections and Dorothy Browne, CBYC Office Administrator. A thank you to Rear Commodore Graham Plant who assigned slips to our new members and constantly kept me apprised of slip availability, and of course, to all the members who help promote CBYC as the “Best kept secret on Lake Ontario”.

It has been my pleasure to serve CBYC as Membership Director for the past two years and I have enjoyed meeting and welcoming all the new members to our wonderful club.

Wishing you all a safe haulout and all the best for the forth coming year.

site saFety & seCurity By Rob King, Safety & Security Director

Well, where did the summer go!!! Seems like we just placed our boats in the water.

It’s been an active summer and a very active year at CBYC, that’s for sure. Over the summer months several improve-ments were made to our club house with regards to the fire suppression system. As we all know, the system is old thus regular maintenance is always required. A second AED Defibrilllator was installed upstairs, all smoke detectors were replaced and the list goes on. The issues with the gate have been corrected. Always lock your vehicles and, of course, your vessel as non-members tend to follow members when the gate opens.

We also upgraded our wifi system with a carrier class enterprise Ruskus system. As a friendly reminder, our system is designed for email access, basic internet browsing etc. as we still have a limitation with bandwidth, so please refrain from apps such as Netflix, etc.

As a general reminder, “cradle” layout begins Oct 4th. From that day forward, please use caution when driving (please obey the speed limit in the club) and walking in and around the parking lot. Boats while on hard are not permitted to be left plug in (overnight) and will be unplugged.

Officer of the Day program will begin Oct 27th. Two mem-bers per day and will end June 1st, 2015. Schedules will be placed in the sailors lounge, clubhouse and will be posted online in the members area of our CBYC website. If you cannot make the date that you are scheduled for please make arrangements to have your OD covered. There is a penalty for those members whom miss their OD. Please remember to fill out the OD form (located in the sailors lounge) once you complete your walk about.

Let’s have another SAFE haul-out!!!!

the soCial sCeneBy Elizabeth King, Social Director and The Social Committee – Pam Burnett (Chair), Rochelle De Aguiar, Cynthia Heard, Saneya & Ayman Helmy, Cathy MacDonald, Donna Deak, Katherine Roesch, Lisa Watt, Diane McCarthy, Chris Taylor (Bereavement) and Lois Willis (Regalia)

The end of my third term as Social Director is fast approaching and soon a new Social Director will take my place. Although the position has involved a lot of time and hard work on my part, it has also been a most interesting and rewarding experience.

I have been privileged to have had an absolutely fabulous Social Committee working with me for the past three years, led so ably by Chair Pam Burnett. The names of the commit-tee members are listed above and without them, and others from time to time, I could not have done my job. They all deserve my sincere thanks and are the rightful recipients of the many compliments passed to me by appreciative members.

When you visit the clubhouse, I hope that you enjoy the constantly changing decorations and seasonal themes that our committee works so hard to put in place. That is but a small part of what they do and I want to say a big THANK YOU to each and every one of them. Next year I hope to be a member of the Social Committee and I look forward to working with the people I have come to know so well. I wish my successor all the best and offer my assistance should it be required. Here is a brief report on more recent events.
