seWiNG All of the projects were assembled by hand, using the following type of stitches:Note: Keep all stitches as even in length and evenly spaced as possible.coNceALiNG KNots For a neat finished appearance, begin stitching by coming up with needle from the back side of the top piece of felt first, then complete stitching (Fig. 2).Fig. 2

WHiPstitcH Starting from wrong side of top layer of felt, bring needle out at 1 and carry thread up and over outside edges of all thicknesses. Take needle into backside of felt and pull thread through all thicknesses, coming out at 2. Continue in this manner for further Whipstitching (Fig. 3).Fig. 3

bAcKstitcH This stitch gives the appearance of a solid line as each Backstitch touches and is the same size as the next. It is often used for outlining pattern markings such as the mouth on the Polar Bear Ornament. Bring needle up at 1, go down at 2 and bring needle up at 3 (Fig. 4a). To continue, go down at 4 and come up at 5. At this point, 2 Backstitches have been completed (Fig. 4b). Continue in this manner for further Backstitching.Fig. 4a Fig. 4b

General Instructions It is important for you to read and familiarize yourself with this entire section before beginning the projects. Carefully trace the pattern pieces exactly, as any deviation may change the size as well as the final appearance of your finished project. Note: If you plan to use the pattern frequently, you should glue the pattern pieces to a stiff material, such as manila folder, and cut out. All of the projects were put together by hand, although you may choose to use a sewing machine.FAbric Felt is a fairly sturdy non-woven fabric made of matted fibers of wool, fur or mohair, often mixed with cotton or rayon. Unless a project requires hemming, it is not necessary to do so, as felt does not ravel or fray. The felt for these projects was purchased by the yard, or in 9" x 12" squares at fabric stores and hobby shops.GeNerAL suPPLies: Quilt batting Polyester fiberfill Sharp pointed scissors Pinking shears White chalk marking pen or soft lead pencil Tracing paper Cardboard Needles: embroidery and beading Craft glue Straight pins Note: Refer to supply lists for individual projects for specific items needed.cuttiNG Once you have traced and cut out all pattern pieces required for your project, lay pattern on felt and carefully draw around each pattern piece using a white chalk marking pen (available at fabric store notions counter) or soft lead pencil. Be sure to include pattern markings for ease of final assembly. Keep all lines clean to prevent smudges on felt pieces. Using sharp pointed scissors, carefully cut out the felt pieces by cutting as close to the inside edge of the chalk or pencil lines as possible (Fig. 1).Fig. 1
