That They May All Be One

These are Jesus’s words at the Last Supper from chapter 17 of John’s Gospel. Here, Jesus is praying that all will come to believe in Him and will be united as He and the Father are one and will be united with Him and the Father. This is a grand and noble undertaking that’s possible if Jesus says it’s possible. Jesus firmly states that through the presence of the Holy Spirit, the love between Jesus and His Father and even the very life of Jesus Himself will be in the hearts of all who believe. With the loving presence of God, all will be one. On 15 October 2018, Bishop Zubik commissioned us – our three different parishes in three different communities that are not necessarily contiguous – to be one in word and deed, in faith and practice. While much good work has already been done, it doesn’t just culminate in a merger in January 2022 but extends globally to all people and eternally into the Kingdom. What we do now keeps us on the road to our final destination. What we share now is much more important than how we differ. We share our four priests and one deacon. We share staffs, leaders, and programs. We share councils, committees, and insights. We share a variety of communications. We will soon share one bulletin. We share the Mass and Sacraments. Above all, we share in the life and love of Jesus Christ, and that is truly what makes us one. It is said that, “Actions speak louder than words”, and St. Francis of Assisi is attributed to have said, “Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary use words”. Yes, our lives should be a canvas on which our faith is painted, but our words aren’t cheap, nonetheless. Our words can clarify and define what we mean by our actions. Our unity will make sense by how we talk about it. “We/Us” can be a great expression of unity, unless it is placed in opposition to “You” or “They/Them”. We use these pronouns innocently enough, but perhaps without thinking, such words can unnecessarily convey a sense of difference and not belonging. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus says, “Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes’, and your ‘No’ mean ‘No’”. (5:37) Perhaps, in our context, we could say, “Let your ‘We’ mean ‘We Three’ and your ‘Us’ mean ‘All Three of Us’”. If we speak the unity and live the unity, then with the one love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we will experience the unity. God Bless

GOSPEL MEDITATION August 23, 2020

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time The only way to know God is to love God. Our minds will never fully grasp the mystery of God, but our hearts and souls can learn to love the mystery. Years ago, when life had a more innocent quality to it, we believed what we were told or witnessed, unless there was direct evidence otherwise. This was especially true if the information came from someone in authority. In a sense, we were a bit more gullible on one hand but also more trusting on the other. The latter is an admirable quality that sadly can be eroded when we realize we have been duped. With education and technological advances, we find ourselves more skeptical and less likely to too quickly accept and believe what we see and hear. For all of the good that social media can do, it can also easily distort reality and truth. Photoshop and a myriad other technological truths can add to, fabricate, and make even the non-existent seem real. It is amazing. How far do we allow this obviously justifiable skepticism to take us? Questioning and doubting are healthy elements of any good relationship as long as we don’t allow them to turn us away from a deeper experience of love and encounter. If we cannot get our minds around something or empirically justify or prove it, we tend to declare it a hoax, untrue, or unauthentic and walk away. The very same trust that can quickly be eroded is exactly what is essential for all of our relationships, especially our relationship with God. With all things and people that make a profound claim on us, we have to trust in the absence of knowledge. Full self-investment involves plunging completely into the unknown! Simon Peter said to Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Peter came to this knowledge, which is not “head knowledge” because of the relationship he shared with Jesus and what God was able to reveal in and through that relationship. Peter simply “knew” because of love that this is who Jesus really is. The silent exchange of love between friends, and not an intellectual exercise of the mind, brought Peter to this place. When we stop and think about it, there are many things in life that we simply know but do not completely understand. When someone sacrifices their own well-being for another, it may not make intellectual sense when examined. But it makes a world of sense when it is carried out. The vastness of reality and an encounter with incomprehensible mystery all lead us to profound silence where we simply know something to be true. Have you trusted enough to allow your relationship with God to bring you to this place or are you still too skeptical? ©LPi

Priestly Ordination of Men Question: Why are only men allowed to be priests or deacons in the Church? Answer: One of the most debated and — in some circles — contentious teachings of the Church is that only men can be ordained as priests and deacons. Critics see it as a way of strengthening a patriarchal system in which women have little or no voice. Those who support this teaching look to New Testament teaching (where we read of Jesus choosing only men to be apostles) and the long-standing practice of the Church. This was certainly the perspective of St. John Paul II who, in his 1994 apostolic letter, Ordinatio Sacerdotalis, closed the discussion on the possibility of ordaining women as priests. In the letter, he reflected on the dignity of women and their call to share in the life and mission of the Church, but he conclud-ed by solemnly declaring that “the Church has no authority whatsoever to confer priestly ordination on women and that this judgement is to be definitely held by all the Church’s faithful” (no. 4). This position has been upheld by Pope Francis in interviews, most notably as he returned from his 2016 visit to Sweden. The ordination of women to the diaconate is another question and one which is being studied. In 2016, Pope Francis created a 12-member commission to study the question from several perspectives (theological, liturgical, historical, etc.). The commission issued an initial report for Pope Francis who later said that the commission had not yet produced a “definite response” to the question because of a lack of agreement on the role of female deacons in the Early Church. For now, however, regardless of what changes might come from ongoing study and debate, the Church continues to reserve ordination to the diaconate to men only, recognizing a vital link between the diaconate and the priesthood and the lack of certainty about the presence and function of female deacons throughout history. ©LPi

The Choice of Stewardship What does it mean to be a good steward? Does it mean to be an active parishioner, or something more? Are we better stewards because we give more in terms of our money and time to our parish, or are we called to do even more than that? The truth is that stewardship is a way of life. We are not simply called to be active parishioners, but instead

be active disciples all the time. In fact, what we learn to do in our parish should serve as preparation for the mission field of the world. What have we really done if we only act like disciples of Jesus Christ while we are assembled with others who claim to be the same? The choice before us is to give of ourselves in all aspects of our day and life. The call of Jesus will come in our everyday lives with our co-workers, family, and friends more often than it will within our parish community. First, if we can’t become good stewards when we are among those who proclaim Jesus as Lord, how will we be able to do so when we are with those who are non-believers? Second, when our muscles of gratitude, generosity, and graciousness are strengthened within our parish community, we are more able to meet the challenges of this world. However, we do not become good stewards by accident. We must always choose to live this way. What will you choose? – Tracy Earl Welliver

HOLY REDEEMER-FAITH FORMATION

Due to the uncertainty of the next months caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, it is difficult to know the

exact picture of the Faith Formation Program beginning this Fall. To assist us with planning and implementation, all families with children in the Faith Formation program are asked to complete the registration forms that are available on the Parish website and return them to the Parish Office. Please know we are planning with the safety of your children and family as our top priority, as well as the importance of continuing to help them grow in their Catholic faith. We are considering a possible hybrid of on-line and on-site catechesis. Thank you and God Bless!

CATECHISTS NEEDED

WE NEED YOU! Our religious education programs could not

function without volunteers. Summer is often a good time to become familiar with our textbooks and audio-visual materials. Interested? Contact [email protected] for St. Ferdinand K-5 and St. Gregory K-8. For St. Ferdinand, 6-8 grade, contact [email protected]. For Holy Redeemer K-8, contact [email protected].

Holy Land Collection: The Annual Holy Land Collection is normally taken up on Good Friday. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, the Holy Father asked that this collection be taken up on September 13th, the Sunday closest to the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. This Sunday is also the date for the Annual Bishop’s Education Fund Collection for support of needy children in our Catholic Schools. No envelopes are distributed

for this dual collection. Please place your contribution in a plain envelope and print your name and envelope number. The total collection will be divided and credited to both causes. May God Bless You for your generosity in helping others during these troubled times.

Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous: teach me to serve You as You deserve: to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not so seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward save that of knowing I am doing Your will. St. Ignatius Loyola

Priest Scripture Study: Our Priest Scripture Study sessions will be starting again on August 31 but will look a little different. We will be meeting on Zoom! Please join Fr. Gallagher on Monday, August 31 at 7:00PM.

Fr. will explain, discuss and answer questions about the week’s Gospel. You must register by Wednesday, August 26 so you can receive the link.
