C AROLYN GR ANTThe addition of
Salmo, Nelson and Kaslo, plus their rural areas, to the Kootenay Columbia riding creates a slightly different pic-
ture in the coming elec-tion. Numbers from the 2011 election also illus-trate that the divide be-tween East and West Kootenay still remains.
In 2011, the riding
did not include the West Kootenay communities, and voted 55.9 per cent in favour of the Conser-vatives and MP David Wilks. The NDP fol-lowed with 33.8 per
cent. The remaining vote was split 5.7 per cent Green, 3.3 per cent Liberal and 1.3 per cent other (there was an in-dependent candidate in 2011).
Over in the West Kootenay, the commu-nities of Nelson, Kaslo and Salmo, and rural areas were almost a mir-ror image of that, with 58.5 per cent support for

Cranbrook, you might not think there is a major feral cat problem.
But there is, accord-ing to the B.C. SPCA East Kootenay branch.
Feral cats are differ-ent from your regular housebound feline as they are born ‘in the wild’ and are not do-mesticated or habituat-ed to human contact.
What makes it prob-lematic is the popula-tion — or overpopula-tion — of feral cats in the community, according to Brenna Baker, the SPCA EK branch man-ager.
“It is quite high for our population in the City of Cranbrook, there
are a lot of feral cats. some of them are looked after by people who feed them and other ones are just free roaming and kind of fending for themselves,” Baker said.
“There are cat colo-nies, which means there are groups of cats living together and they’re wild.
“There’s the odd do-mesticated cat in those colonies, but there are very few and what’s happening is they keep breeding and reproduc-ing and it’s getting out of control.
“It does cause a nui-sance for people when they’re not managed properly.”
COLUMBIA VALLEY PIONEERDuring the evening of Au-
gust 1, an unconscious man was located in Invermere next to his mountain bike. He was taken to Invermere Hospital then flown to Foothills hospi-tal with serious head injuries.
The evidence at the scene
leads the investigators to be-lieve that the man was riding down a steep hill. At the bot-tom of the hill on a curve, the road divides into a Y intersec-tion. The male did not negoti-ate a turn and ended up in a ditch filled with large rocks.
A search of the scene and
of the person found no identi-fication. No missing person reports or overdue persons were received.
With the assistance of the media and social media, tips were received that resulted in a positive identification.
The injured male has been
identified as Jacob Daniel MacNeil, 25, of Invermere.
The Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment would like to thank the media for their assistance as well as the public that took note of this story via social media and provided information.
Colonies of feral felines abound in Cranbrook
Unknown man discovered in Invermere identified
the NDP and 30 per cent for the Conservatives.
Both areas had iden-tical voter turnout at 61 per cent. The addition of the West Kootenay com-munities adds 18,000 plus potential voters to Kootenay Columbia. In the 2011 election there were just over 60,000 potential voters in the riding.
Taking a closer look at the 2011 results, one can see that Conserva-tive support is generally strongest in the south — Sparwood voted 75 per cent Conservative, Elk-ford - 69.9, and Fernie rural 72.4 per cent in fa-
vour of the Conserva-tives.
At the northwest of the riding, in Revel-stoke, Conservative support was 40.9 per cent, with 43.4 per cent voting NDP. Revelstoke also had the highest Lib-eral support at 5.5 per cent, and Green support at 8.2 per cent.
Kimberley voted 44.8 per cent Conservative, but the surrounding rural area voted 61.1 per cent for the Conserva-tives. In Cranbrook, Conservative support was at 61.4 per cent and Cranbrook rural at 66 per cent.

The decommissioning of the Idlewild dam and draining of Idlewild Lake continues, with the City of Cranbrook monitoring the situation. Some residents have expressed concerns about the wildlife as the lake drains and turtles and the other water dwellers run out of areas to live in. Chris Zettel, the city’s corporate communication officer, said the engineering department is working and consulting on permits with various ministries, including what to do about the turtles and other wildlife. He said not much is happening right now, and suspects not much will change until September or October. “They are just monitoring it and it’s just sitting where it is right now,” he said.

The SPCA recently received an $84,000 grant for spaying and neutering and are hop-ing to tackle some of the feral cat colonies. They are implementing a TNR—Trap, Neuter, Re-turn—program as fund-ing allows as a way for population control.
Baker says that if feral cats are removed or eu-thanized, more will al-ways come as cats can have up to three litters a year.
“I know a lot of peo-ple think that if you just get rid of these feral cats, that would solve the problem, but it would actually make it worse,” she said.
Baker said she is aware of four colonies in Cranbrook, but knows there are probably more. Even though feral cats are undomesticated, sometimes there is a human caretaker for the colonies who feed them and take care of them.
“I visited a colony last
night and it’s very well looked after, they have not been able to spay and neuter because it’s expensive and they’re not their cats, they’re un-owned cats, but they’re looking after the colony and the cats look really healthy.
“We’re going to go in and spay and neuter them because they just keep having kittens,” said Baker.
“…There is one colo-ny that we’ve’ started to do TNR on and it’s in the yard of a business, so the caretaker noticed that one cat was sick, so we ended up trapping that one and getting it to the vet, just to make sure it wasn’t something that was going to spread through and get into people-owned cats and get them sick.”
Because the cats are undomesticated and raised in the wild, the SPCA shelter can’t take them in because they can’t handle cages and
doned houses or sheds. “If you come across
any, call the shelter and then we can look into it and see what’s going on. I think people really need to understand that by just removing the cats
or euthanizing them is not going to solve the problem,” she said.

kennels, said Baker. “They are completely
wild and will bite and scratch and they are
dangerous, some of them,” said Baker. “A lot of the feral colonies, they’ve been born into
that, they’ve never been in human contact. If you put them in a kennel or a cage, they go absolutely ballistic.
“We’ve had cats that try so desperately to get out that they can rip their teeth out, or their claws out. And if they get out, and get into this building, it’s absolutely crazy.”
Some municipalities have passed spay and neuter bylaws that help with cat over popula-tions, which, in addition to overpopulation, also cuts down on cases of feline aggression and hostility.
When colonies have been treated with TNR, the vets snip the tip of a cat’s ear, while it is still sedated, as a visual indi-cator of whether a cat has been spayed or neu-tered.
However, Baker urges the public to call the shelter if they notice any feral cats or a feral cat colony, which can set up shop in places like aban-

of Eagles Aerie No. 3032 donated $500 to support the RCMP to teach the new D.A.R.E. ‘Keepin’ it REAL’ (KiR) Program to 459 local Grade 5 stu-dents.
Staff Sergeant Antho-ny Choy, the RCMP Pro-vincial Coordinator of the Drug and Organized Crime Awareness Ser-vice (DOCAS), which oversees the Cranbrook D.A.R.E. KiR Program, said that over 100 police officers teach D.A.R.E. to thousands of school children throughout British Columbia.
“The new D.A.R.E. KiR Program encourag-es youth to be exempla-ry citizens and to help others in need. The Pro-gram also covers topics such as peer pressure, stress, communications, bullying, and the Deci-
sion Making Model.”S/Sgt. Choy said
DOCAS work closely with D.A.R.E. BC Soci-ety, a registered charita-ble organization which raises funds within each community to cover the cost of the student learning materials. D.A.R.E. BC Society President, Colin Grant emphasized that “Com-munity donations en-sure our children will be equipped with the criti-cal thinking and life skills necessary to choose a drug-free life and fund the $12 cost of learning materials per student”.
Colin Grant thanked the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3032 for their support, “We
are very grateful for their generous donation which covers the cost of learning materials for 41 students who took the program during the 2014-2015 school year”.
D.A.R.E. BC Society Partner Relations Man-ager, Chantal Brough-ton, said next year’s D.A.R.E. program starts
this September. “We will need to raise
over $5,500 in Cran-brook to cover the cost of learning materials for over 450 students who are expected to take the D.A.R.E. KiR program. We are appealing to the citizens of Cranbrook to make a donation to help the Cranbrook RCMP
empower our school children to choose a drug-free life.”

OpiniOn/EvEnts
I recently took a vacation, spending 17 days on a road trip. I travelled about 7,200 km through the northwest quarter
of the USA, and had an absolutely amazing time. I won’t subject you to a travelogue in this column (a newspaper equivalent to an endless night with a slide show) … but I do want to reflect a little on my experiences on this road trip.
The first thing is that I saw some amazing things. I tend not to differentiate be-tween the wonders of natu-ral scenery and those capti-vating things which human beings have created. Both are quite engaging. The wonders of nature can take my breath away. The wonders of those things that the human mind has conceived, and human hands have de-signed and built also have the power to make me stop in delight and awe.
I drove among (and through!) giant redwoods in northern California which made me feel infinitesimally small. These towering stands of evergreens reminded me once more that in the grand scheme of things, we humans are such latecomers on the evolutionary timeline and such tiny parts of the natural order. We are intercon-nected with all of life in a web of common purpose, and we only harm ourselves if we forget that fact. The power of life is strong as it reaches to the sun for light and warmth. It is a power that needs to be honoured.
I marveled as sea waves pounded the rocks along the Oregon coast. Pods of whales played in the distance as a group of us ooohed and aaahed in delight. I passed through huge swaths of grasslands, golden heads waving in the wind as far as the eye could see. In every case, sequoia and sea
and grassland took no notice of me. I was a wisp in the air, a fleeting fellow–traveler, a wisp which is gone in a moment.
I also visited the Mormon Temple in Salt Lake City, delighting in the architec-ture, the layout and the architecture of Temple Square. I stumbled across the Tab-ernacle Choir rehearsing, and stayed as
the organist practiced, seemingly unaware of his audience who listened in rapt attention. Voices and fingers blessed with creativi-ty to make such divine sounds also surely make the web of life richer and fuller.
I smiled when I learned that the whole city is laid out in relation to Temple Square. Without doubt and unapologeti-cally, this is the centre of the city.
I also saw a land devoid of life, intense-ly bare and barren as I travelled beside the Great Salt Lake. It stands as a monument to the power of nature to destroy as well as to give life.
It came as no surprise to learn at the Interpretive Centre that when the first Eu-ropean settlers stumbled across this Lake, one of their first concerns was to discover how they might use the resource. It seems to be such a natural impulse on our part to wonder how can we commodify the natu-ral world. How can we use it? What benefit can we imagine that this might be for us?
They discovered that the Great Salt Lake could not be tamed for their purpos-es. Nature doesn’t exist to meet our needs. Rather, it’s our purpose to take care to-gether of this incredible web of life in which we live together.
Even so, the scale of the work of art known as Mount Rushmore took my breath away. You don’t need to be an
American to be moved by the incredible achievement of this monumental sculp-ture.
I stayed away from the Interstates, and was delighted to travel through innumera-ble small towns, most of which I have al-ready forgotten. The one thing that stuck with me, however, was that each town would list not only its name, but also its population and its elevation. So I passed through Cromberg, California, and no-ticed a small square of fresh paint on the sign which listed the population at 268. It was a brand new number, and I thought that often it is only in smaller communi-ties that each person is counted and each person counts. When I talk about Cran-brook, I say that there are about 20,000 people here. Or I mention that I grew up in Surrey, which is now part of a major met-ropolitan area with millions of people.
But Cromberg knows that there are 268 people there; the number is updated to take account of births and deaths. In a so-ciety where we think that “bigger is better” Cromberg and all its cousins remind us that it ain’t necessarily so.
I also love finding road signs that make me laugh. This trip, I saw a sign that read in big white letters on a green background, “Independence” … followed 250 metres later by “Prison Zone. No hitch hiking al-lowed.” The irony made me laugh out loud.
Finally, a friend sent me a card, “We usually associate the colours red, white and blue with freedom and liberty … until we see them flashing in our rearview mir-ror!” I’m delighted to say that I never saw any freedom lights in my mirrors.

Letters to the editorout of touch
Stephen Harper dropped the electoral writ on August 2nd, but left election day on October 19th, creating, at 11 weeks, the longest electoral campaign since 1872. This may be a clever strategic move, but it is not a good move for either democratic or financial responsibility. Indeed, it is an abuse of power.
The long campaign enables the Con-servatives to outspend their competitors - and they have more money than the other parties, combined. Estimates of the total election costs range between $50 million and $75 million. A normal 4 week cam-paign would have kept those costs in check and would have considerably re-duced the amount to be paid by the tax-payers.
Moreover, the Harper government has been shovelling billions of our tax dollars out the door in strategic efforts to buy votes from target groups. The so-called Universal Child Care Benefit is only the most obvious of these. And it is also tax-able. Are we so naïve as to be bought with our own money?
Mr. Harper is out of touch with the real-ity that many Canadians face each and every day. Our economy is on the brink of
a recession. Industrial and resource in-dustry jobs are vanishing or moving to other countries. We are experiencing se-vere climate changes and the environ-ment is suffering. In northern and Aborig-inal Canada, people continue to live with inadequate housing, educational and medical facilities and affordable food and clean water.
According to economist Jim Stanford, under the Harper Conservatives Canada has produced its worst economic record since the Second World War.
In response to these concerns, I can almost hear Stephen saying “Let them eat cake”.
Time for the electoral guillotine if we are to salvage a measure of democracy and what remains of the Canadian economy.

sun Mine tourI am writing this letter to send a big thank
you to the two guides who operated the Sun Mine Tour in Kimberley on the 1 p.m., Au-gust 3rd tour.
My husband, a 40+ year Industrial Elec-trician with Cominco, was keen to see the
Solar panels up close and personal as he had been following the procedure from the Jim Ogilvie Way view for the past year.
When we arrived for the tour, I was ex-pecting a bus similar to the community bus used in Kimberley. However, it seemed to me he would be unable to “climb” on the bus provided. I went over to tell the guide that we would not be taking the tour for this reason. He said we will get him on! They did; which made John one happy camper.
When we arrived at the centre for a closer view and a short lecture of the facility and future expectations, one of the guides moved the bus so that John was able to see the panels clearly! How wonderful was this! He then climbed back on the bus and told John exact-ly what the other guide was saying to the group outside. At one point John did not hear clearly what he said so I repeated what I thought he said but John quickly corrected that I had the ac/dc wrong! I guess, once an electrician always an electrician!
Thanks again Gentlemen! You made MY 85 year old master electrician one happy camper! When he said it was a great infor-mative tour it must have been.

PAGE 6 FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 2015
T here may have been no bigger win-ner than polygamist Winston Blackmore last month when the
Canadian government sent out cheques for the expanded Universal Child Care Benefit.
Blackmore, who is awaiting trial on a single criminal charge of polygamy, has 133 children ranging in age from babies to adults.
For every child under the age of six, Canadian parents received $520, and for every child aged seven to 18, they received $420, with no re-strictions on how the money could be spent.
Using the best information available from several sources, the 58-year-old funda-mentalist Mormon leader has as many as 98 children who are 18 or younger, and as many as 20 of those are seven and younger.
What makes it easier to determine the Blackmore children’s ages is that his off-spring were often given names that started with a specific letter of the alphabet depend-ing on which year they were born. There was the year when most (if not all) had names starting with O. Other years, there were the Rs, the Ms, the Ns, the Ps, followed by the As, then the Ws (although, surprisingly, no Winston), the Ss and the Hs.
Do the arithmetic of 20 children under seven and 78 between the ages of seven and 18 and it adds up to a $43,160 payday for Blackmore and his wives.
Of course, the childcare benefit is taxable.
But the Conservative government have also introduced income splitting for families.
Even for conventional families with only two parents, it is difficult to estimate the dollar value of that benefit. But there is no reason to believe that Blackmore would not be able to take full advantage of sharing the tax burden among his wives.
And heaven knows, Blackmore has no shortage of wives. There were 24 list-ed on Blackmore’s indict-ment on the polygamy charge.
All of which could add up to another big mess for the folks at the Canada Rev-
enue Agency to sort out the hows and what-ifs of income-splitting in this family.
It was only last September that the Feder-al Court of Appeal finally ended Blackmore’s long-running tax case. The unanimous deci-sion was that Blackmore had understated his income by approximately $1.8 million over a six-year period that began in 2000. In one year alone, a Federal Tax Court judge said Blackmore understated his income and ben-efits by an “astronomical” 1,326 per cent.
Both the tax court and the appeal court rejected Blackmore’s contention that he and his congregation of close to 500 people (mostly family) were eligible to be taxed as a commune.
On Aug. 20, Blackmore will be back in B.C. Provincial Court in Creston to fix a date for his criminal trial on a single count of polygamy. Blackmore has attempted to have
the charge quashed on the basis that the special prosecutor had been improperly ap-pointed, a claim rejected by a B.C. Supreme Court judge in June.
Another former bishop of the Fundamen-talist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, James Oler, will also be in Provincial Court in Creston on Aug. 20. He is charged with one count of polygamy, with four wives named on the indictment, as well as one count of transporting a child under the age of 16, a daughter, for an illegal purpose — a re-ligious marriage in the United States.
Blackmore’s brother, Brandon, will be in B.C. Supreme Court in Cranbrook on Aug. 13. Brandon Blackmore and one of his wives, Emily Crossfield, are also charged with transporting one of their under-aged daughters to the U.S. to be married.
It is almost certain that the Conservatives would not have even thought of polygamous families before they made the $3-billion, “family-friendly” childcare announcement last month.
They did, after all, make child trafficking a criminal offence and increase the penalties.
But the Conservatives (like most other politicians) have been less clear on where they stand on religious-based polygamy. Because opposing it means accepting the B.C. Supreme Court’s conclusion that even religious freedom has its limits — a conclu-sion that at least some voters might find hard to accept.

AssociAted PressZURICH - World Cup winner Germany dropped
to No. 3 in the latest FIFA rankings, with beaten fi-nalist Argentina still at No. 1.
Germany trades places with new No. 2 Belgium as its World Cup results drop in value more than one year later.
The Netherlands fell seven places to No. 12, also because its third-place finish in Brazil counts for less in FIFA’s calculations over a four-year cycle.
Colombia stays at No. 4, and Brazil and Portugal each rise one to Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.
Copa America winner Chile climbs one to No. 10.Mexico used its Gold Cup title to rise 14 places to
No. 26. Runner-up Jamaica is up 21 to No. 55.The United States, beaten by Jamaica in the
semifinals, improves five places to No. 29.Canada rises two places to 101st after posting
two draws and a loss at the Gold Cup.

c AnAdiAn PressVANCOUVER - Players and employees of the
CFL will undergo yearly mandatory training on vio-lence against women as part of a new league initia-tive.
The CFL unveiled its policy on violence against women today, with an emphasis on preventing vio-lence from occurring in the first place and acting quickly when it does happen.
The policy was developed in partnership with the Ending Violence Association of Canada, follow-ing consultations with multiple women who are ex-perts in the field of responding to violence against women.
The league says it will also participate in efforts to increase awareness of violence against women and ways to prevent it throughout society, in particular among youth.
CFL commissioner Jeffrey Orridge says the league will work to ensure that all of its workplaces are safe from violence against women.
CFL combats violence against women with new initiative
AssociAted PressNEW YORK - The NFL and CFL are partnering on
concussion testing during Canadian league games and practices this season.
The leagues announced the agreement Thurs-day.
During CFL training camp and regular-season games that began in June, team medical staffs have been using a remove-from-play sideline concussion screening test based on eye movement. It is being used in addition to the CFL’s established sideline concussion examination, and the NFL will contrib-ute funding to help determine whether the tests improve the ability to diagnose concussions.
Called the K-D Test, it’s a two-minute exam. An athlete reads single-digit numbers displayed on cards or on a tablet to test eye movement. After sus-pected head trauma, the athlete is given the test and response time is compared to his preseason base-line time. This information, as well as a full medical evaluation, will help diagnose a concussion and subsequently remove a player from play, the leagues said.

TORONTO — Canada is gunning for a top-three spot in the medals table at the Para-pan Am Games, which open Friday, and like its Canadian Pan Am predecessor, is field-ing its biggest team ever - 216 athletes.
At the Parapan Ams four years ago in Guadalajara, Mexico, Canada finished eighth in gold medals, and fifth in overall medals. Brazil dominated the Games, win-ning 197 total medals - 81 gold, 61 silver, and 55 bronze - and a year out from hosting
the Rio Paralympics, will be a force to contend with in To-ronto.
The United States won 132 medals (51-47-34) in Mexico, while the host country fin-ished with 165 (50-60-55). Canada brought home 63 medals from Guadalajara - 13 gold, 22 silver and 28 bronze.
Boccia player Marco Dis-paltro will carry Canada’s flag into the opening ceremonies Friday at the new athletics sta-dium at York University.
These are the largest Para-pan Am Games in history, with 1,600 athletes from North, Central and South
America participating.Elisabeth Walker-Young,a
four-time Paralympian in swimming who is Canada’s chef de mission, said Canada will be strong in what she called the country’s legacy sports: men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby.
Fifteen sports will be con-tested: archery, athletics, boc-cia, cycling, five-a-side foot-ball, seven-a-side football, goalball, judo, powerlifting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, wheelchair bas-ketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis. All are
qualifiers for next summer’s Paralympics.
“There’s a lot at stake,” said Catherine Gosselin-Depres, the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s executive direc-tor of sport. “For the first time the Parapan Ams are direct qualifiers in every sport for the upcoming Paralympic Games in Rio. In many cases, you will have to win here just to get to Brazil.”
At the Pan Ams that wrapped up almost two weeks ago, Canada finished second in medals, with 217 - 78 gold, 69 silver, and 70 bronze.

It’s a book with few an-cestors and certain-
ly no descendants.Written by a Poet Laure-
ate, the book remains diffi-cult to classify and almost impossible to teach. It has been compared to every-thing from ‘Heart of Dark-ness’ to ‘Huckleberry Finn’—but it’s not really like either of them. It is simply the story of four friends embarking on a canoe trip in the back-woods of Georgia — only to find horrors that no one es-capes from, not even the readers.
‘Deliverance’ appeared 45 years ago; a sparsely written novel from one of America’s
most recognized poets at the time, James Dick-ey.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Dickey was a decorated pilot in World War II and Korea, wrote copy for various ad agencies, and taught po-etry at Rice University.
His first book of poet-ry (he would publish two dozen more) ap-peared in 1960, earning him international acco-lades and a Guggen-heim Fellowship. His later collections were no less revered, earning him The National Book Award, and The Order of the South Award. He be-came the consultant in poetry to the Library of Congress (which is now called Poet Laureate) in 1966, and was asked to read his poem ‘The Strength of Fields’ at President Carter’s inau-guration.
In the early 1960s Dickey’s literary agent suggested that he should try and write a novel based on his poem ‘Springer Mountain’— a meditation on a hunter’s last hike up Mt. Georgia. While he thought this idea unworkable, he did like the idea of a novel using his poem’s setting. He felt he might be able to combine it with the free-climbing — a new fad he had witnessed while vacationing in Italy.
Having chosen his setting, he then poured all of his favourite pas-times into the book: ca-noeing, hunting, ar-chery, wilderness, and music. He stripped the final product of all of his poetic sensibilities, pro-ducing a sparse novel with no excess wordi-ness or adornment. He even stripped the novel’s title down to one word.
‘Deliverance’ hit the shelves in the fall of 1970. In little more than 200 pages Dickey tells the story of four friends from the big city who — instead of playing golf for the weekend — de-cide to take a whitewater canoe trip on the Cahul-
‘Deliverance’ delivered the goods
The Hollywood version of ‘Deliverance was “one of the signature—and most shocking—films of the decade.” Left to right: Ronny Cox, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty and Burt Reynolds.
awassee River, which is about to disappear for-ever due to a state dam being constructed. Be-fore the river’s end three men have been slaugh-tered, one raped, and “the survivors have had the bark peeled from their modern sensibili-ties.”
‘Deliverance’ re-ceived outstanding re-views, knocking ‘Love Story,’ ‘The Godfather,’ and ‘The French Lieu-tenant’s Woman’ off of the charts. The New Yorker found it ‘“brilliant and breathtaking,” while author Pat Conroy (‘The Prince of Tides’) felt ‘you can’t write much better than this.’ Citing Viet-nam, the Sharon Tate murders, and even the JFK assassination, the New York Times stated “it was an unsettling book that arrived, as if on cue, at an unsettled time.”
Hollywood grabbed it and it appeared on the big screen in 1972, be-coming “one of the sig-nature—and most shocking—films of the decade.” On a more lighthearted note, the film introduced the world to a song called ‘Duelling Banjos’ (based on Don Reno’s 1955 song ‘Feudin’ Banjos’). This scene in the book — “the rural boy’s fin-gers moved only slightly, about like those of a good typist; the music was just there” — is clearly written by a mas-ter poet.
Not everyone was en-amoured with Dickey’s work, especially his fel-low Georgians who did not like their portrayal as toothless mentally defi-cient hillbillies. Yet be-sides the murderous rapists, both the book and film portray the Southerners as intelli-gent and decent individ-uals. Dickey ends his story with the survivors being offered free ac-commodations and a massive spread of home cooking, all offered by people who knew noth-ing about them except that they were strangers in trouble.
Although Dickey — who appears as the sheriff in the film — rev-elled in the new level of fame the movie brought him, he quickly returned back to writing and teaching poetry.
“Poetry is a matter of luck,” Dickey told his son right before his death in 1997. “You can’t teach it. [But] you can point it out when it occurs.”

The B.C. health min-istry is adding an extra $2 million to improve security at four facilities identified as having the highest risk for violence.
Extra staff, new alarms and violence prevention training will be among strategies for Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Port Co-quitlam, Hillside Centre in Kamloops, Seven Oaks Tertiary Mental Health in Victoria and Abbotsford Regional Hospital.
Health Minister Terry Lake announced the extra funding Thurs-day with B.C. Nurses’ Union president Gayle Duteil. Eight more health facilities have been identified as prior-ities for additional help, and more are expected
Anti-violence measures increase at four hospitalsto be identified this fall, Lake said.
Duteil said increased staffing around the clock at Hillside psychi-atric hospital mean that nurses will no longer have to work alone. She
said violence is a risk for all health care facilities in the province, includ-ing residential care.
“Health care workers as a whole receive the highest number of WorkSafeBC injury
claims for violence-re-lated injuries across this province,” Duteil said. “They actually have more injuries that police officers related to vio-lence.”
Duteil said a nurse at
the Abbotsford emer-gency room has not re-turned to work after an assault in March left him with stitches to his face. Fraser Health re-ported that there were three security guards on
duty at the time who re-sponded immediately to what police described as a sudden, unpro-voked attack by a 23-year-old man.
Lake said the minis-try committed $37 mil-
lion to violence educa-tion in 2011. Since then the annual total of “Code White” violence incidents has declined from 4,300 a year to 3,700.
c anadian PressVANCOUVER - Brit-
ish Columbia residents are once again being asked to curb their water use as drought conditions persist throughout the prov-ince.
The Forests Ministry has raised the drought rating to Level 4 in the Okanagan region, sig-nalling extremely dry conditions that could lead to water shortages.
The north Thomp-son region has had its rating raised to Level 3.
Fishing has also been banned along the main stem of the Okanagan River be-tween Okanagan Lake and Osooyos Lake to protect fish stocks amid low stream flows and high temperatures.
Drought ratings for the south Thompson, Similkameen, Kettle and Skagit areas were all raised to Level 4 on July 27.
M u n i c i p a l i t i e s throughout the prov-ince have put water re-strictions into effect, in-cluding in Metro Van-couver, where residents can be fined $250 for watering their lawns or hand washing their cars.
Province asks residents to lower water
use as drought rating rises

Dear Annie: About three years ago, I did something very stupid. I looked at a solar eclipse. I thought it would last only a minute and, not wanting to miss it, I ran outside and squinted at it through my sunglasses. I fully ac-knowledge that I can only blame my-self for that. The next days and weeks were some of the scariest of my life. My vision became blurry and I had a hard time focusing. I feared that I might not recover my sight and that my center of vision might always be skewed because I had looked directly at the sun. Thankfully, my vision gradually recov-ered. But one thing about this episode has left me deeply troubled. When I thought I would be permanently blind-ed, I needed love and support. How-ever, my mother quickly became con-vinced that I was faking it. She insisted that none of it was real, it was all in my head and I was just imagining every-thing. It was frustrating and confusing. Why would she deny that I was having a medical problem? Why would she take a position that could only hurt our rela-tionship? Last week, during an eye exam, the doctor noticed a spot and diagnosed me with a textbook case of solar mac-ulopathy. I passed this confirmation along to my mother, but even now, she won’t acknowledge how wrong, and in some ways cruel, her denial and indif-ference were. In my right eye, I have a dark spot that follows wherever I look. I’ve grown used to it, but it is a constant reminder of this troubling episode. Am I wrong to continue feeling hurt? Or does this re-veal something about our relationship and her moral character? -- S. Dear S.: Denial is a very powerful emotion. It allows someone like your mother to refuse to believe that you have a serious problem [1]and what it could mean to your future. She need-ed comfort, too, and this is where she found it. Is Mom’s behavior toward you oth-erwise close and loving? If so, we would put this in the past. Continuing to dwell on the hurt will only make you bitter and will alienate the two of you, which we assume is not what you want. Dear Annie: I’d like to comment fur-ther on the letter from “Shepherdsville, Ky.,” regarding poor grammar. My pet peeves are those who say “pitcher” for “picture.” In Wisconsin, numerous individuals say “youse guys” instead of “you guys” and “liberry” for “library.” And last, but not least, it irks me when my husband and I are at a restaurant and the server asks, “What can I get for you guys?” I am not a guy. I am far from perfect, and maybe a lit-tle picky, but I find these things very an-noying. And I, too, feel better now after venting. -- Miss Picky in Wisconsin Dear Wisconsin: You’re welcome. We all deal with small, trivial irritations on a daily basis. Some people are more bothered by them than others, so we’re happy to help when you need to let off a little steam. Ron “Horby” HorrobinApril 21, 1944 – August 4, 2009
You have been gone for 6 years now but it seems like yesterday. Your spirit lives on in
your 4 grandchildren. You are thought of daily by me and your girls and missed.I hope the fishin is great and as always,
the beer cold.
Love always, Marlene, Kathy & family, Tammi & family.
Archie Keith CarverDecember 26, 1947 -
August 2015It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our son, dad, grandpa and brother Archie Keith Carver. Archie was born on December 26, 1947 in Cranbrook. He is predeceased by his father Kenneth Carver and brother Danny Carver.
Archie is survived by his mother Lois Carver, daughter Shelby Murphy, grandson Liam and granddaughter Caitlin. Brothers Brent Carver, Randy (Janine) Carver, Shawn (Alisha) Carver, sisters Sherry (Charlie) Laurie, Vicki (Don) Stanley, Frankie (Kelly) Reekie and many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Other than living in Canal Flats for a couple of years growing up Archie spent his school years in Cranbrook. His first job was as a milkman with his Uncle Ray. Archie was working in a logging camp when he was offered the opportunity of going to carpenter school. This turned out to be his lifelong journey taking him to all different parts of Canada. Working on the dome in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa as well as many other cities, but his great love of carpentry took him mostly to northern parts of BC and Alberta, always using Edmonton as his home base when not in camp. Archie loved to work and took pride in his work, once a project was started he would barely find time for sleep.
Archie respected and adored the outdoors. He was forever in awe as he hiked to the local trails and many times would explore to exhaustion. He was joyful and at peace tearing up the trails with a four-legged friend. Archie loved, loved, loved animals and they adored Archie. He was gifted with a real gentleness that drew animals to him. Archie was also a voracious reader and spent countless hours with his nose in a book. The library was a close friend.
We were blessed 3 years ago when Archie decided to make Cranbrook his home again. Archie always expressed a great desire to settle down with a home he built by the water. Though West Vancouver may have been his dream Archie found his peace by coming home to Cranbrook.
Archie was a gentle, generous and caring person with an undeniable sense of humor. Telling us stories of his travels and situations he seemed to always find himself in. Laughter came so easily to Archie and to all of us while listening to his tales.
Please join us for a celebration of Archie’s life which will be held at the Eagles Hall in Cranbrook on Monday August 10th, 2015 at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers Archie would appreciate donations to the SPCA.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Services. [email protected]

Top Ten Reasons to Advertise in a Newspaper
1. Advertise to Reach New Customers.Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.
2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.
3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back.A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.
4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.
5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient.Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.
6. Advertise to Generate Traffic.Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.
7. Advertise to Make More Sales.Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.
8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate.Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.
9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.
10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.
