The West Kootenay EcoSociety has lost its challenge of the cre-ation of Jumbo Glacier Resort Municipality.

BC Supreme Court Justice Grace Choi ruled Tuesday that the munic-ipality’s creation was reasonable and dis-missed the society’s ap-plication for a judicial review.

The case was heard in Vancouver in July. The EcoSociety argued the government’s for-mation of a municipali-ty with no residents was wrong because such a municipality can only be created where there is a reasonable expecta-tion that it will have an electorate and elections within four years.

However, the prov-ince argued the Local Government Act places no such restrictions on the minister’s discretion and that the only pre-requisite is that a devel-opment agreement must be in place.

Choi agreed: “I con-clude the minster’s de-

cision [was] reasonable and that the minister’s discretion is not limited by election timelines in the way the society claims … In my view, while much of the Local Government Act is in-tended to further the

pillars of community and democracy, [it] also intends to facilitate ski resort development.

“In light of what in my view is an unambig-uous legislative scheme, reading in a require-ment for elections or an electorate within four years would directly contradict the intention of the legislature.”

“We are disappoint-ed,” said Ecosociety ex-ecutive director David Reid.”While we under-stand the judge’s ruling, we disagree with it. Cit-ies must have citizens, and town councils must be elected by someone. The province should not

be allowed to create a municipality in order to overcome the opposi-tion of local people and their elected represen-tatives.

“The judge took a narrow approach to the legal question. She did not take into consider-ation the purpose of the Local Government Act which is to serve com-munities.”

Jumbo was incorpo-rated as a municipality on Nov. 19, 2012. Greg Deck has served as its mayor since. The EcoSo-ciety filed its petition in February 2013 and amended its brief in Au-gust 2014.

Construction of the resort has been on hold following a decision by the environment minis-ter in June that the proj-ect had not been sub-stantially started by the expiry of its environ-mental assessment cer-tificate.

Glacier Resorts Ltd. has since said they plan to submit a scaled-down proposal that would not be subject to the same review pro-cess.

“We will participate in that regulatory pro-cess,” Reid said, “to make sure all the regula-tions are applied strin-gently.”

“Two suspects fled on foot, but were appre-hended a short distance away.  One suspect was taken to hospital for pos-sible injuries.”

Two police officers sustained back injuries as a result of the colli-sions; a third police offi-cer sustained an injury to his eye during the foot

pursuit.Newel spoke to the

Bulletin Thursday morn-ing, at which time charges were still being discussed, although they will begin with   possible charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Flight from Police, Dangerous Driving and Theft.

The possibility of

drugs and/or alcohol being involved will also be investigated. Newel said the intent was to get them before a judge on Thursday.

The incident began with two officers from Kimberley, and then ad-ditional backup arrived from the Cranbrook De-tachment.

Much of the dam-age, caused mainly from the sprinkler sys-tem, was limited to the Home Ec wing of the building. While staff and contractors are cleaning that area up to reopen on Monday, the gym was much harder hit.

“The gym is a differ-ent story. We’ve got water inside some of the walls and in some of the insulation in the ceiling and some water under-neath the floor,” said Norum. “We don’t know the extent of the damage there, but we’re getting that assessed to see if we

have to do any major renos.

“We’ve already had an engineer in; he’s going to continue to look at the building to make sure we don’t have any structural is-sues. We’ve had an air quality expert in and he’s cleared the build-ing.”

receives accessibility fundingArne Petryshen

Western Financial Place was a topic of conversation at city coun-cil on Nov. 2, with talk of the re-cent Bare Naked Ladies concert, as well as a grant of $13,796 to cover some accessibility up-grades.

Both items were in the admin-istration updates for the regular council meeting.

CAO Wayne Staudt said the city was successful in obtaining the Enabling Accessibility in Communities program grant. The grant will cover two-thirds of the cost of upgrading the public washroom doors at Western Fi-nancial Place to allow for accessi-bility upgrades.

The grant was secured through the Enabling Accessibility in Communities program which is run through Employment and Social Development Canada.

It will also provide an aquatic

wheelchair and a disability lift to assist patrons into the pool, wrote city staff.

On Oct. 26, Western Financial Place hosted the Bare Naked La-dies, and with Blue Rodeo an-nounced for Jan. 23, 2016, coun-cillors took the opportunity to talk about the venue.

Coun. Norma Blissett said it was great show.

“I don’t think it was quite sold out, but there was good atten-dance, and it was a fantastic show,” Blissett said.

Blissett noted she grew up in Toronto and compared the ven-ues there to here.

“To be able to attend a concert and have such great seats, really there aren’t bad seats in the whole place,” she said. “To be that close to the band is such a privi-lege, and we get great shows here.”

Coun. Tom Shypitka con-

curred that the show was enter-taining.

“It was excellent; a really good show,” Shypitka said.

He also agreed with the great venue here. He recently was at a game in Calgary’s Saddledome.

“We were literally, in the Sad-dledome where the top of the bowl is, we were at that top,” he said. “Nosebleeds for sure and those were $59 tickets. We get the luxury of seeing these concerts up close and personal. I don’t think people realize the val-ue-added that we have on that.”

Coun. Danielle Cardozo added that George Thorogood is also coming to Cranbrook in April.

She said Paul Haywood de-serves thanks for his work in de-veloping a relationship with the promoters and bringing in those big shows.

While Remembrance Day was publicly marked on Nov. 11, schools in Cranbrook also held their own ceremonies within the schools over the week. Pictured above: David Robertson sounds Reveille on the trumpet during a ceremony at Gordon Terrace Elementary School. Below, Kootenay Christian Academy was honoured to have Veterans, Legion, Service members, MP Wayne Stetski, and Mayor Lee Pratt attend their Remembrance Day Service on Monday, Nov. 9. About 300 community people attended the service, in addition to the staff and students. The audience stood in honour as the Veterans, Legion and Service Members were bagpiped into the service. Individual students and classes shared their performances. It was moving to hear Leah, a Service Member, share about the significance of Remembrance Day.

It is a message that Kimberley Mayor Don McCormick repeats again and again — this is a regional economy and no one municipali-ty can go it alone. One of McCormick’s goals has been to create partner-ships to encourage eco-nomic development.

Last week, Mayor and Council of the City of Kimberley met with

the Chief and Council of Band on November 5th to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The two councils met in March of 2015 to discuss their intentions to establish an effective working relationship based on mutual re-spect and cooperation, and now that initiative has been put in writing and signed.

The Memorandum

of Understanding be-tween the parties rec-ognizes that:

The interests of all persons living in their respective communi-ties are best served by working together in a spirit of cooperation.

The City of Kimber-ley lies within the tradi-tional territory of the Ktunaxa Nation

There are mutually beneficial opportuni-ties to enhance the re-

gion’s economic, so-cial-cultural, and envi-ronmental significance through maintaining a meaningful and posi-tive government to gov-ernment relationship

Building an effective relationship will create certainty and harmony for neighbouring com-munities and will begin an important dialogue in anticipation of suc-cessful treaty negotia-tions

“It has been a very difficult time for na-tional parks. In 2012, the national park bud-get was cut by the Con-servatives by about $27 million. There were 106 staff affected in British Columbia that were laid off and 1,689 across Canada,” said Stetski. “In 2013, the Environ-ment Commissioner warned that the Conser-vative cuts were jeopar-dizing the environmen-tal health of national parks.”

Stetski added that the Environment Com-missioner said 50 per cent of parks were not in good health, while roughly one-third were in serious decline. Half of National Park assets, such as picnic tables, campgrounds and sig-nage, were ranked as

poor or very poor, in a 2014 report, he contin-ued.

“Overall there’s been a real cut and decline—both in the ecological health and the health of the facilities, which is important to visitors coming to national parks over the last 10 years under the Conser-vative government,” Stetski said.

Stetski will be look-

ing at the Liberal gov-ernment’s promises during the election and holding them to ac-count. Liberal MP Cath-erine McKenna was re-cently unveiled as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Minister of Environment, which is responsible for national parks.

According to Stetski, Liberal promises in-clude $25 million in an-nual funding to protect ecosystems and species at risk, reversing cuts implemented under the Conservative govern-ment and allowing lim-ited development with-in national parks in con-sultation with neigh-bouring communities to encourage eco-tourism and job creation.

“Our job is to make sure they deliver on those promises and hopefully even more,” Stetski said.

As winter arrives, slow down and drive safely

FOR The TOwNsmANDuring winter driv-

ing conditions, Main-road Contracting is committed to the safety of motorists and resi-dents.

We’re asking drivers to be prepared for the unpredictability of the winter season. Before heading out, please visit www.drivebc.ca for cur-rent road conditions, weather forecasts, and real-time conditions via

webcams. Please drive to the

conditions, SLOW DOWN, and increase the distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you. We en-courage drivers to choose the best winter tires possible when driv-ing in snow and ice, and to ensure the tires are in good condition, with a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm.

“We often get asked

which streets get plow-ing priority, how often we plow and apply the use of salt and winter abrasive. It’s important for everyone to know that Mainroad’s plowing response time is deter-mined by the standards set by the Ministry of Transportation and In-frastructure. Priority is given to numbered highways and school bus routes with other roads frequency deter-mined by winter traffic volumes. These fre-quencies are reviewed by the Ministry to en-sure that plowing priori-ties reflect any changes in the road network,” notes, Al Sander, Gener-al Manager for Main-road East Kootenay Contracting.”

Province debating carbon capture legislationTom FleTcher

Black Press

As it prepares to take part in the latest United Nations conference on climate change in De-cember, the B.C. gov-ernment is changing legislation to permit development of carbon dioxide capture and storage from its north-east B.C. natural gas deposits.

Natural Gas Devel-opment Minister Rich Coleman said the changes will give the B.C. Oil and Gas Com-mission authority to regulate projects that strip carbon dioxide from raw gas and inject it back into salt water

formations deep un-derground.

“Although we’ve had a look at it over the years and have actually had projects that looked like they might go ahead at some point in time, we find that we don’t have the overall regulatory framework to actually allow and be successful with CCS,” Coleman told the legis-lature as he introduced the amendments.

One of the changes protects Oil and Gas Commission employ-ees from being named in lawsuits related to their decisions.

In 2008, the B.C. government put in $3.4

million towards a $12 million feasibility study at Spectra Energy’s gas processing facilities at Fort Nelson, one of the

largest gas plants in North America. The federal government and the U.S. Depart-ment of Energy also

helped fund the study.Initial results

showed saline aquifers more than two kilome-tres deep could act as

permanent storage for CO2, but the project has not yet proceeded to construction, and extracted CO2 is still being vented to the at-mosphere.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said CCS is a promising technology, but the gas industry in B.C. is re-sponsible for 15 per cent of the province’s greenhouse gas emis-sions, and venting of CO2 from plants and wells accounts for a quarter of that.

Huntington said the proposed development of liquefied natural gas exports means more CO2 emissions from

gas extraction as well as LNG processing.

Premier Christy Clark and Environment Minister Mary Polak are scheduled to join Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other pre-miers at the latest cli-mate change summit in Paris in early Decem-ber.

In his election cam-paign, Trudeau said he wanted Canada to take a leading role in reduc-ing greenhouse gas emissions, but that the provinces should take the lead in determining how to regulate before a new national plan is developed.

Spectra energy

Spectra Energy’s gas processing plant at Fort Nelson is the site of a pilot project for carbon dioxide capture and storage.

We are taught to admire the person who seems to know where s/he is going in life. Society tells us that

setting goals in life is an important life skill. People repeat maxims such as “You can’t hit a target you haven’t set up” or “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” Or they ask, “Where will your life be in 3–5 years?”

There is some value to setting goals for yourself. But I am discovering that it’s not really as critical as some people think it is. These days, when people ask about the next 5 years of my life, I often respond, “I’d be grateful to be alive, thank you.” I don’t mean to be flip; I simply want to emphasize that to me the important issue is how I live my life, and not just the goal.

It occurs to me that this practice comes from the world of business. When a block-buster company is “analyzed,” the analysts don’t put the CEO on a couch and ask him how he feels. They look at three important numbers: 1) how many sales were made this year? 2) how many more sales are projected in the coming year? 3) how will the company grow?

This business approach of setting and achieving goals has become such a large part of how we think and talk.

But it doesn’t work for me. I know how to do it. I have tried, but I have discovered that as soon as I put my goals on paper, I want to do something else. Or I found that the ac-complishments I had picked out of the air really didn’t have much to do with what ac-tually happened.

As a result, I would become depressed or angry as a result, thinking that if I didn’t reach my goals, there must be something wrong with me. Or it was someone else’s fault.

In my 40s, I was able to lay this approach

aside. Before I continue, let me repeat that in

some cases, limited goal–setting works well. When you’re trying to get a degree, or meet a deadline, or getting an important task completed, short–term goals are important.

But increasingly I began to find that set-ting larger goals (what some call “life–goals”) was like building larger prison walls for me; it left me feeling caged and deprived of the things I desired most, things like learning, friends, or an openness to learning about life from different angles.

I have a different approach to life these days, one which focuses more on the jour-ney than on the goal. I have discovered that while I am on the way to something, I end up noticing and pursuing something else, which ends up helping to define a new con-tour in my life.

Here’s an illustration of what I mean. When I go to the library to look for a particu-lar book, I also like to wander through the stacks. Just so you know I’m not an old fogey, it works the same way when I go online to look for specific information. Like the li-brary, I will spend a few minutes surfing the internet. For some reason, this only works for me when I am seeking specific informa-tion or a particular book.

In the library or online, I search for a spe-cific book or item I find it, pick it up, or learn it. Then I look around at the larger context. Maybe one of the other Internet search re-sults catches my eye. Perhaps a book lying

close to my targeted book looks interesting. I pick it up or check it out. I would say that more than 50% of the time, I find myself choosing to look at the newly–discovered item rather than the item I thought I wanted.

And, then, this newly–discovered item leads me to other items that I wouldn’t have noticed if I just was after my target book or search result. Many of my columns come from this kind of learning.

The same holds true with personal rela-tionships. Sometimes I will ask people how they met their partners. Many say it was by chance, or when they were pursuing some-thing else, or even someone else. They just happened to be at a meeting or an event where the other person was present. Or they were interested in one person, and noticed someone else who became more important to them.

I tend to interpret one of my favorite Scripture passages from this perspective. Jesus is talking to his followers: “Those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25).

Jesus was speaking in the context of what it meant to follow him and be his disciple. But it also applies to our basic approach to life. If we do everything we can to try to save our life, by planning it out to the last minute, we end up losing our lives. Our life will slip out of our hands.

But when we pay attention to other voic-es outside ourselves, when we pick up the extra book, or spend some time with an in-teresting article you never intended to look at, or when we spend time with that person who comes across our path, we can see how our lives open up in ways we never imag-ined.

Thanking our veterans

I want to thank Mr. Free-stone in Kimberley for that im-portant letter he wrote last week in regards to remembering those that fell and those that have served and are still serving on behalf of freedom.

Freedom is not cheap, it’s not easy but it is right. My Grandfather Frederick George Webber served with the Koote-nay 54th division in World War I and he also served in World War II. Grampa was an immigrant from England and loved our country so much he volun-teered to serve when the call came. I remember as a kid him

telling us some stories, carefully leaving out the brutal parts to protect us as we were quite young. He fought in Vimy Ridge as well as other battles that marked Canada’s place in the world.

As Mr. Freestone said, be-fore we get all caught up in the rush and stress of the Christmas season please take one day, and one or two minutes out of your busy day to remember those that made our way of life possi-ble. Also please think of those innocent people that were killed in both wars, especially the men, woman and children slaughtered in the holocaust. They fought and died for them too. Please think of those that

fought and died in the Korean conflict among other wars in the name of freedom. These men and woman laid down their lives for people that they never met so they could live free from oppression and tyranny.

So when you do go shopping the malls for the Christmas sea-son, take a backward glance for those gentle heroes that can no longer go to the places you can go. Think of all of the men and women that answered the call for freedom and remember, we are able to do the things we do, say the things we believe even if we do not all agree. That is free-dom and that is what they fought and died for. I am so proud to be one of the few direct

ancestors of those that fought in the “great war”.

My grampa was one among the bravest people our country has ever had the honor to call citizen. They were called the best generation simply because, they were. I also want to thank and pray for those young men and women that returned and those that did not return from Afghanistan. As well as those that still serve in foreign coun-ties in the name of freedom, you all make me very proud to be a Canadian, as you represent the best of this great country. Thank you and God bless you all.

The Queen’s Hotel stood on Baker Street in the heart of Cranbrook’s

downtown business district for over 60 years; in fact it first stood when there was no heart at all, except, of course, the brave hearts of the sturdy pioneers who travelled across the lonely, barren wastes to settle a strange and savage…START AGAIN!

In the final days of March, 1898, months before the railway came through, there were four buildings in Cranbrook aside from those on the Baker home-stead: the CPR storehouse, Hil-liard’s blacksmith shop, the Cranbrook Hotel and the East Kootenay Hotel, the latter of which stood two blocks - two very empty blocks - away from all the others, near the corner of what would become 10th Ave-nue and Baker Street.

There were five women in town at the time and one of them, Mrs. Mary Hannah Dona-hue, age approximately 45, was the lone proprietress of the East Kootenay Hotel and a local property owner of note. To say that she was an astute, deter-mined, independent woman would be pretty much on the mark. She was certainly the first businesswoman in the town and would remain so for many years.

Mrs. Donahue came to Cran-brook by way of Golden and the North Star Landing on the Koo-tenay River near Fort Steele, where she opened her first boarding house a year or so pre-viously. Determining the nearly vacant townsite of Cranbrook to be on the cusp of rapid growth, she purchased numerous city lots and erected a small hotel on a piece of ground that seemed a

long way off from the site of the CPR rail yard. Her ad, one of the first and few in the March, 1898, Herald newspaper read, “East Kootenay Hotel – Mrs. Mary Do-nahue, Proprietor: Cooking in Home Style, Warm Rooms and Comfortable Beds. No pains spared to make everything pleasant for visitors.”

And that was, indeed, the tone of the hotel for years to come. As the town of Cranbrook rapidly grew, Mrs. Donahue continued both improving her hotel and gradually relinquish-ing control. By July, a two-storey addition to the east side of the hotel was underway which added over a dozen new rooms, office space and a bar. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Donahue passed the management of the hotel over to Oliver Burge and Frank McQuinston, who immediately ensured an ample supply of good cigars and liquors on site. By December, 1898, the town boasted a population of 1200 people and five hotels with the East Kootenay Hotel continuing to enjoy an excellent reputation and steady clientele.

Management of the hotel passed from the hands of Burge and McQuinston to T.T. Richards to Hugh Cameron in the space of months at which point Mrs. Donahue attempted to sell the building following another round of renovations and the securing of a public liquor li-cense for the bar. A series of managers followed with Robert Shaw, Peter Matheson, A. McPeak, Alexander Chenette, George Gougeon, J. Netterfield, N.P. Molander and Gus Andeen taking charge in the space of the next seven years, during which time the name was changed to the Queen’s Hotel, and another two-storey 10’ x 18’ addition was added. Although Mrs. Donahue was by now living primarily in Calgary she still visited on occa-sion to see old friends and at-tend to her local business inter-ests. The hotel continued to un-dergo renovations and improve-

ments including one of the earli-est metal roofs in the city added in 1909 by local carpenter and undertaker W.R. Beatty.

Local entrepreneur Nils Hanson, a good friend and busi-ness partner of Mrs. Donahue announced yet another addi-tion to the hotel in1910. The lean-to kitchen at the rear was replaced which, in conjunction with opening up the top story, added another 13 rooms. It was during this construction that contractors Christian and Jones set a somewhat controversial local precedent by allowing workers a half holiday on Satur-day afternoons.

The entire façade of the orig-inal building – or rather, what there was of the original build-ing - was remodeled and plate glass windows added. The con-struction next door (the corner of 10th and Baker) of the three-storey, brick, Hanson Block in 1911, which later be-came the Norbury Hotel, would likely have taken much of the Queen’s Hotel’s business had not the two buildings been joined via a passageway on the second floor and, in effect, be-came one unit. Frank Carlson took control of the Queen’s in 1913, passing it on to Teddy Clauson a few years later, then to

Benson and Veeburg, Gunnar Swanson, back to Clauson, over to Dencoe, Shypitka, Lynch and Skene and finally on to Jack Dowart, who was in possession during the early morning hours of May 17, 1959, when Norbury Hotel proprietors Mr. and Mrs. Harry Walkley awoke to discov-er the ground floor filled with smoke.

Firefighters were on the scene directly and both hotels were safely evacuated. Within no time both the Queen’s and Norbury Hotels were a raging inferno of flames, one of the city’s most notable conflagra-tions. Both building were com-pletely razed as firefighters, using one-and-a-half miles of hose, worked well into the morning to save the downtown core.

Heat from the blaze shat-tered the windows of buildings across the street and melted the face of the post office clock fac-ing the blaze.

All that remained was the large safe of the Norbury Hotel which was incorporated into the Phoenix building which was constructed on the spot of the Norbury Hotel in 1961. Mary Donahue died in Calgary in De-cember, 1934.

Slowly but surely, Roman Dymacek is finding his way with the Kootenay Ice.

Overcoming a seri-ous language barrier is just one of the challeng-es faced by the 18-year-old native of Hodonin, Czech Republic, but it isn’t keeping him from adapting to life in North America and the West-ern Hockey League.

Dymacek came to the Ice via the 2015 CHL Import Draft -- selected in the first round, 35th overall.

Since arriving in Cranbrook in August, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound winger has been adapt-ing to life in North America, listing meals and climate as just two of the other serious dif-ferences he’s encoun-tered since flying across the Atlantic Ocean.

One of the first chal-lenges the smiley Czech has been faced with is learning to communi-cate with his coaches and teammates, having never spoken English prior to arriving in Can-ada.

Take it from Slovaki-an defenceman Mario Grman, who went through the exact same scenario last season when he joined the Red Deer Rebels.

“My first challenge was language,” Grman said Thursday. “My first year, when I came here, I didn’t speak English -- same as Roman. I know how he is feeling right now. But I try to help him with what I know.”

Dymacek is enrolled in English classes at Col-lege of the Rockies, but he still has a ways to go before he can fully speak and understand the new language in conversa-tion.

Thursday afternoon prior to practice at West-ern Financial Place, the glory of Google Trans-late allowed Dymacek to field questions and respond in his native tongue. His responses from here on are para-phrased as translated.

Off the ice, Dymacek is enjoying his English lessons at the college, using time outside of class to walk and speak English with “good Chi-nese and Japanese girls.”

On the ice, he finds the hockey in Canada to be much better than back home in his native Czech Republic. Here, he describes the game as more technical be-cause of the smaller ice surface. Back home, hockey features more passing because of a

wider ice surface. “Hockey here is

much different than in Europe,” Grman said, backing up Dymacek’s account. “Everything here is faster, stronger.”

Adjusting to the North American game hasn’t come easily for Dymacek, but he’s working in the right di-rection, according to Kootenay Ice head coach Luke Pierce.

“He’s progressed, that’s for sure,” Pierce said. “It’s a big change for him. A lot of his game is geared towards offense. Teaching him the other parts of the game has been our focus and he’s showing growth in it. But it’s tough with the language barrier, culture barrier and other things.

“Considering all of it, he’s shown some real positive signs.”

Hints of Dymacek’s offensive prowess have been speckled through-out the 2015-16 WHL season, highlighted by

the electric goal he scored Saturday night against the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

But the offensive numbers haven’t been easy to come by for the Czech import as he’s only managed two goals and three points in 19 games.

“I try to help him with the use of video and everyone kind of understands the univer-sal language of drawing pictures in hockey,” Pierce said. “He gets that. His teammates and linemates have been good walking him through stuff.

“To him, if he doesn’t score a goal, he feels like he didn’t have a good game. But he does a lot

of other things well.“We’re trying to get

him to understand there’s a lot more we’re asking for him to do than just produce offense.”

Dymacek doesn’t like losing and when asked about what he wants to achieve this season, he wants noth-ing more than to extend the Kootenay Ice record of 17 consecutive play-off appearances.

Though they come from different countries, their first languages are similar enough and as a result Grman has acted as translator for Dy-macek throughout the season, helping him dis-cuss on-ice systems with the coaching staff in an effort to help fur-ther that playoff mark.

“He is much better than his first day here,” Grman said of Dy-macek. “It’s hard speak-ing for him, but I think he understands more than before.

“He had some points the last few nights. It’s starting. He needs time and he’s going to be good.”

Dymacek hopes to continue producing of-fensively and coach Pierce hopes to see his crafty Czech forward continue to develop his all-around game.

The next test for Dy-macek and the Koote-nay Ice (4-13-2-0) comes Friday night as they travel to Calgary to face the Hitmen (9-10-0-1) at Scotiabank Sad-dledome. From there,

they head south to visit the Medicine Hat Tigers Saturday night.

“We’ve talked about the importance of these divisional match ups,” Pierce said.

“It was disappointing last weekend. I thought we should have had four points and we only end up with the two. These ones are real big.

“[The Hitmen] are a tough team to play at home. We’ve got to find a way to stop being sat-isfied with some of these little moral victories of being in games. We’re putting ourselves in po-sitions, on a nightly basis, to win hockey games and yet not win-ning them every time. That’s where we’ve got to find the next level.”

HOUSTON - A per-son familiar with the de-cision tells The Associ-ated Press outfielder Colby Rasmus has ac-cepted the Houston As-tros’ one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer, the first free agent to agree to such a deal.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the team hasn’t announced the move.

All 34 qualifying of-fers were turned down in the first three years of baseball’s current col-lective bargaining agreement. When a player rejects the deal in order to test the market, his former team receives an additional high se-lection in the June draft.

There were 20 quali-fying offers made to free agents this year. The deadline to accept or re-ject is Friday at 5 p.m.

Toronto’s Josh Don-aldson is a Silver Slugger Award winner for the first time in his career.

The 29-year-old was named as a recipient of the award by MLB on Thursday as the top of-fensive third baseman in the American League.

Donaldson batted .297 with a .939 on-base plus slugging percent-

age last season, helping the Blue Jays to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 1993. He had 41 homers in the regular season and led the league in runs scored (122) and runs batted in (123).

Donaldson is the first Blue Jays third baseman to win a Silver Slugger Award since Kelly Gru-ber won one in 1990.

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Atlanta Braves have traded shortstop An-drelton Simmons to the L.A. Angels for shortstop Erick Aybar and pitching prospects Sean New-comb and Chris Ellis.

The Braves also get $2.5 million, while the Angels get minor league catcher Jose Briceno in the trade.

Simmons is arguably the best defensive short-stop in baseball, winning

the Gold Glove in 2013 and 2014. He was named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year on Wednesday, offsetting his mediocre offensive skills with spectacular work in the field.

Aybar has been the Angels’ starting short-stop since 2008 and key in Anaheim for a decade, making the AL All-Star team in 2014. He has been dependable in the field and at the plate, but will be a free agent next winter.

Wild junior girls win big in Kelowna

FOR THE TOWNSMANThe Mount Baker

Secondary School ju-nior girls volleyball team returned home after winning the 36-team UBCO Junior Heat tournament Nov. 6 to 7 in Kelowna.

The team had a chal-lenging pool defeating

Penticton High, Val-leyview and Surrey Christian and three of these teams ended up in the semifinal. The next day saw wins over Okanagan Mission, South Kamloops and Mount Boucherie be-fore defeating Surrey Christian in the finals.

This is now the sec-ond large tournament the team has won. On Oct. 2 to 3, the team travelled to Kamloops to compete in the 48-team TRU Junior Classic. The team came back tourna-ment champions from that event.

This weekend the

team will be competing in the Mount Baker Se-nior Home Volleyball tournament in prepara-tion for their Junior Pro-vincials.

The Junior Provin-cials are in Delta Nov. 27 to 28. The Junior Provin-cials is a very challenging event as it is the top 32

teams in the provinces in A, AA, AAA and AAAA volleyball. It is difficult to qualify for some of the larger centres as they have many schools to compete against. The team is coached by Herb Tepper, Volleyball Cana-da Center of Excellence Kootenay Coach.

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Whitecaps have spent most of the last two seasons looking for more offence, and that search will contin-ue into 2016.

The Whitecaps were eliminated in Major League Soccer’s West-ern Conference semifi-nal over the weekend after failing to score in over 180 minutes of ac-tion against the Port-land Timbers in what turned out to be a 2-0 aggregate loss.

Vancouver head coach Carl Robinson met the media on Thurs-day to dissect the season and said that he will again focus on trying to bolster the club’s attack.

“We know we need to improve in the goals area,” said Robinson. “Can we do that by bringing one player in? Yeah, we possibly could.”

What is more likely, however, is for Vancou-ver to continue mining Central and South American leagues to compliment some of the young talent up front that has shown flashes of brilliance, but also a maddening lack of poise at critical moments.

Uruguayan striker Octavio Rivero joined the club last winter and started the season with five goals in six league games before adding just five more over the next 30, including the two playoff outings.

“It’s important he comes back fitter and stronger for next year,” said Robinson. “Expec-tations in this city are brilliant. You go from being the best to being the worst in a short peri-od of time. He’s certain-ly not the best and he’s certainly not the worst. We know he’s a work in progress.”

Uruguayan midfield-er Cristian Techera was added on a loan deal partway through the sea-son and contributed seven goals in his com-bined 24 games, while Gambian forward Keku-ta Manneh added seven of his own in 34 matches.

“I think we showed maturity throughout the season, but we’re still a young group so we can still go a ways there,” said goalkeeper David

Ousted, who tied for first in MLS with 13 shutouts. “I think it’s ob-vious to say that we need to find goals from the guys already in the group and if the coach and the club are going to bring new players in.”

All told, Vancouver scored 45 times, three more than 2014, but far fewer than the increase of 25 that Robinson set as a target. He was, how-ever, quick to point out that 36 goals against tied for fewest in MLS and is something to build on moving forward.

“If I get another three (goals) next year then we’re moving in the right direction,” he said. “You’ve got to give your-self a platform and we’ve done that the last two years because we’ve built from the back.”

One of the main rea-sons for the lack off of-fence came down to in-juries, including a series of setbacks for captain and talismanic midfield-er Pedro Morales that kept him out for long stretches. The club’s highest paid player start-ed just 15 games, but still contributed six goals and four assists, and Robin-son said he expects the Chilean to be fit for the start of training camp in the New Year.

Vancouver finished second in the West with a franchise-record 53 points and accom-plished many of its tar-gets for the campaign, including the club’s first Amway Canadian Championship and first home playoff game, but the post-season defeat still stings and will for sometime.

“It’s very bitter. It’s very tough to swallow right now. The disap-pointment hasn’t really gone yet for me,” said Ousted. “(But) when the smoke clears I think we’ll look at the season as a season where we made history and developed with a young group.”

Note: The Whitecaps announced Thursday that midfielder Matias Laba has signed a multi-year contract extension. A crucial part of Vancou-ver’s defensive setup, the 23-year-old Argentine has an MLS-high 303 tackles over the last two seasons since arriving in a trade with Toronto.

OTTAWA - Andrew Hammond made 33 saves and the Ottawa Senators won their first game in regulation on home ice by downing the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Thursday.

Chris Wideman, Bobby Ryan and Erik Karlsson scored for the Senators (8-5-3), who snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory.

Sven Baertschi and Alexander Edler scored

for the Canucks (7-5-5), who were playing the fourth of a seven-game road trip (1-2-1). Ryan Miller faced 25 shots.

This was the first of a five-game homestand for the Senators, who improved to 3-3-2 on home ice. Their first two wins came by way of the shootout.

The Senators had one of its better third periods of late and were able to hold off the Ca-nucks in front of a sell-out crowd of 19,229.

Wideman’s pow-er-play goal, a wrister

from the blue line, turned out to be the winner.

With Ottawa leading 3-1, Edler scored on the power play with 23.9 seconds remaining to make it a one-goal game.

The Senators were

outshot 19-8 in the sec-ond period, but came out with a 2-1 lead.

Karlsson, with his second in as many games, gave Ottawa the lead as he jumped into the play and beat Miller through the legs at the 14-minute mark of the period.

Hammond was the difference in the period as he made a number of key saves to keep the game tied before Karls-son’s goal.

Vancouver opened the scoring at the sev-en-minute mark of the

first as the puck bounced in off Baerts-chi’s skate. Ottawa tied things up midway through the period with a power-play goal as Ryan scored his sixth of the season.

Notes: D Patrick Wiercioch and LW Shane Prince were healthy scratches for Ottawa. The Senators an-nounced D Chris Phil-lips (back) has started skating and LW Clarke MacArthur (concussion) has started working out. There remains no time-table for either’s return.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Be spontaneous, and make choices accordingly. You have the ability to come up with the correct response or gain the traction you desire. You could be a bit sensitive if you overthink a situation. Your responses attract many people. Tonight: TGIF! Treat a friend. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Relate to others directly; they will appreciate the eye contact, the caring and the attention. You could voice a complaint, but it probably will be a while before the other party really registers what you have said. Tonight: With a favorite person, christening the weekend. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Others will make an effort be-yond the call of duty. Smile and get into weekend mode as soon as you can. You will be very hap-py to let go of problems and join a friend or loved one early. To-night: Let someone else choose, so you can go along for the ride.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You might have a lot to do, es-pecially as someone could drop some errands or extra responsi-bilities on you. You’ll want to say “no,” but you probably won’t. Don’t make this gracious atti-tude a regular happening, for your own sake. Tonight: Head home early. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You have a sense of the good life, more than many other signs do. Today it kicks in, which allows you as well those around you to really get into the moment. You could have a great time at work, on the bus or wherever. It is a question of attitude. Tonight: Opt for more passion. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Others have expectations that involve your home and do-mestic life. You might want to take off and do what you want before you have to get back. Tension is high, and tempers could flare. You’ll want to defer to others or eliminate this situ-ation. Tonight: It is your call. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Your ability to have a conver-sation and get to the bottom of a disagreement will be im-portant. Nevertheless, you’ll need the other party to want a resolution as well, rather than having his or her way. You know what you want. Why not make it so? Tonight: Out and about. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Watch what is happening with-in your immediate circle, and take your cue from a friend. You might not be aware of how much frustration you seem to be sitting on. The unexpected plays a big role in what goes on. Understand where others stand. Tonight: Play the night away. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You could be beaming from ear to ear and not even realize it! Others seek you out, as they have not seen you like this for a while. You’ll need to stay anchored when dealing with a family member who can be very emotional. Tonight: Put your best foot forward. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have an opinion that oth-ers might not want to hear,

especially a superior or older relative. It probably would be a good idea to avoid a collision by saying nothing. Keep communi-cation flowing, even if you have to stay quiet. Tonight: Try a new night spot. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Remain expressive of your feel-ings. Let friends know where you are coming from. A partner will appreciate some insight. Your fun nature comes out. Don’t push a loved one too hard, as he or she could have a strong reaction. Tonight: Enjoy your friends. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will feel pressured to show your best side. You could be left holding the bag at work. Are you ready for that? Perhaps you are frustrated that you can’t join your friends more quickly. A partner seems to want your time and attention. Tonight: A must appearance. Dear Annie: I am in a sorority and proudly wear my Greek letters. However, when I go outside the campus, I receive a lot of negative feedback. People assume things about me that are not true, and this can be very hurtful. They think I haze, hang out promiscuously with frat boys, drink, do drugs and care only about getting a “Mrs.” degree. Let me tell you, this is not what Greek life is about. I, as well as a few of my sorority sisters and fraternity cousins, am on a full-ride scholarship and must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average or better. We take random drug tests to make sure our organization is clean. We have strict rules when it comes to being with members of the opposite sex, and we cannot be seen with alcohol. My sorority is incredibly multicultural with several foreign students, one girl in a wheelchair, one with severe medical conditions and young women from all races and walks of life. We consider hazing to be domestic violence, and our philanthropy is domestic violence awareness. We raise thousands of dollars for abuse victims every semester. We pay for our badge, our shirts, our events, our formal dances, our recruitment expenses, our insurance and our dues, which are used for scholarships for deserving young women. Greek life is not what the movies or media make it out to be. It teaches us valuable life lessons. We meet people we can rely on and forge bonds that last a lifetime. My sisters and I are strong women. -- Alpha Chi Omega in Texas Dear Texas: We agree that sororities get a bad rap. Movies and TV shows often portray even savvy sorority girls as angling solely for the right guy or the right clothes. This may make for good drama, but it simply isn’t truthful. Sororities have always provided lifetime friendships, and these days, most sorority members do volunteer and charity work, as well. They are filled with strong, smart women. Dear Annie: I live in an area of the Midwest that has frequent tornado warnings. I have a weather radio, and I take the warnings seriously -- especially when they announce a tornado warning for my county. I have friends, however, who think that because the local tornado siren has not gone off that there is nothing to worry about. They say I am overreacting. It is my understanding that a tornado can touch down without warning and also that the tornadoes are harder to spot at night. Your thoughts? -- Rather Be Safe Than Sorry Dear Rather: We’re with you. Tornadoes can develop so quickly that sometimes there isn’t much warning. By the time a siren sounds, it might be too late to get to a safe place. When you hear that there is a tornado watch, it means you should be alert to the possibility of a funnel. If the county issues a tornado warning, it means a tornado has been sighted in the area and you should seek shelter. Top Ten Reasons to Advertise in a Newspaper

1. Advertise to Reach New Customers.Your market changes constantly. Advertising is tremendously helpful in directing customers to the product and services they need, and helps put you ahead of your competition.

2. Your Competition Isn’t Quitting. You’ve got to advertise to get your share of business or lose it to the stores that do. If you cut back on your advertising, you may forfeit new prospective customers to your competition.

3. Advantage Over Competitors Who Cut Back.A five year survey of more than 3,000 companies found that advertisers who maintained or expanded advertising during a troubled economy saw sales increase an average of 100%.

4. Continuous Advertising Strengthens Your Image. When people who postpone buying come back to the marketplace, you’ve got a better chance of getting their business if you’ve continued to maintain a solid, reliable image.

5. Direct Advertising is Cost Efficient.Direct has the advantages – demographic and geographic numbers to afford advertisers the best value and exposure for their advertising dollar.

6. Advertise to Generate Traffic.Continuous traffic is the first step toward sales increases and expanding your base of buyers. The more people who contact you, the more possibilities you have to make sales.

7. Advertise to Make More Sales.Advertising works! Businesses that succeed are usually strong, steady advertisers. Look around. You’ll find the most aggressive and consistent advertisers are almost invariably the most successful.

8. Advertise Because There is Always Business to Generate.Salespeople are on the payroll. As long as you’re in business, you have overhead and you’ve got to advertise to generate a steady cash flow.

9. Advertise to Keep a Healthy Positive Image. In a troubled economy, rumors and bad news travel fast. Advertising corrects gossip, shoots down false reports and projects positively.

10. Advertise to Maintain Employee Morale. When advertising and promotion are cut, salespeople become less motivated. They may believe the store is cutting back, even going out of business.

Want to reach new customers? We read the newspaper every day, Monday to Friday.

Lest We forgetdaily townsman

Cranbrook marksRemembrance DayA large crowd gathered at the Cenotaph in Rotary Park on Wednesday to mark Remembrance Day in Cranbrook. The ceremony began with a parade of vet-erans into the park, followed by the singing of O Canada and O God Our Help In Ages Past. Padre Dave Morton and Rob Martin, with the Cranbrook branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, gave brief addresses before Dave Ward sounded Last Post and Reveille. Music was provided by the Mount Baker music department, including a choral version of In Flanders Fields.
