Trip Breakdown
Day 1: Sunday, 15th November 2015 ~ Dullstroom The group was fully assembled in the parking lot of Oliver Tambo International Airport. Nesting Southern
Masked Weavers got the trip off to an official start. Even the baggage handler got stuck in directing one of us to the Weavers which was a tad amusing. Frank White unfortunately had his bag damaged beyond repair by
the airline company which was eventually replaced. The Weavers make an interesting bag nest of their own
in early summer. These kidney shaped weaves can also get damaged by the elements of summer for example heavy thunderstorms. A firm decision was taken to go to the nearby Rietvlei Nature Reserve to bag
the very striking Northern Black Korhaan. Our 1st bird was on recently burned grassland. We observed him harassing some Helmeted Guineafowl. Andrew picked up a second in longer grass. This was to be one of
many fine contributions he would make throughout the trip. Our 3rd and last bird proved to be the ultimate
when a male walked down the road in front of us. In fine spirits we left Rietvlei to make our way to Dullstroom, our first overnight destination. Capped Wheatear and Plain-backed Pipit were notables whilst
driving, neither of which we would see again. A stop before the town of Belfast revealed two stately Blue Cranes and a distant flock of 28 Crowned Cranes. This was the 1st of many opportunities we would have at
setting up scopes, which would prove to be invaluable throughout. Botha’s Lark in Wakkerstroom to literally wading through the waders at St Lucia. We checked into Linger Longer then headed back into town for
dinner birding as we went along. Abdim's Stork surprised us in a farm paddock close to sunset. A good
dinner and 72 species for the day preceded a good night’s rest.
Route: Johannesburg International Airport to Dullstroom via Rietvlei Nature Reserve. Bird of the Day: Northern Black Korhaan.
Day 2: Monday, 16th November 2015 ~ Mount Sheba
We woke up to heavy mist today. This unfortunately did not lift in time to allow us to get grips with the area of Verloren Valei. Translated it means lost valley, which it remained today. An early breakfast and hot coffee
lifted our spirits ever so slightly. Redwing Francolin calling roadside was noteworthy. We eventually exited
the mist later on close to the town of Lydenburg. Lanner Falcon, Bald Ibis and Blue Crane kept us interested for a while. A flurry of activity near Orighstad Dam had us back in working mode. The forest of Mount Sheba
was alive with birdsong. After checking in we walked the grounds of the time share resort. A confiding Chorister Robin showed numerous times. Cape Batis, Knysa Turaco and Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler
were also well seen today. Forest birding always remains a challenge. Fires burning in the bar and restaurant
created a pleasant ambiance. Dinner was very good with bean soup well received.
Route: Dullstroom to Mount Sheba via Lydenberg. Bird of the Day: Chorister Robin Chat.
Day 3: Tuesday, 17th November 2015 ~ The Kruger National Park, Satara
A pre-breakfast walk into the forest produced some goodies. Dave asks straight faced “have you seen the
owl?”. Seconds later we are all locked onto a very cute Wood Owl covered in down. There was no sign of the parents or any agitated mobbing parties. This was to be a day dedicated to Owls as we would record Pearl
spotted, Verraux’s, Scops and Barred Owlet in the Kruger later on. Initially it was slow going then things picked up with visuals of Orange Ground Thrush; Grey Cuckoo Shrike; Yellow-streaked Greenbul and Olive
Woodpecker. Three hours later we changed our van for an open safari vehicle entering the park at Orpen
gate. Agitated Blue Waxbill, Brown-crowned Tchagra; Long-billed Crombec; Chinspot Batis and a White-browed Scrub Robin led us to a Pearl-spotted Owlet. Gabar Goshawk circled our car and sat for us at eye
level. Another ‘only’ spot of the trip. Brown-headed Kingfisher helped us to locate another Barred Owlet. We scoped a juvenile Martial Eagle on its nest. Open savannah habitat around Satara is our heaviest Eagle
habitat. In the Kruger their preferred prey is the Rock Monitor. Martial Eagles are at low densities and it is always good to observe them in the wild. The last bird of the day was Golden-tailed Woodpecker in the
camp. Castle draught on tap and a meal at Mugg and Bean franchise were a nice end to a perfect day.
Route: Mount Sheba to Satara via Orpen Gate.
Bird of the Day: African Barred Owlet.

Day 4: Wednesday, 18th November 2015 ~ The Kruger National Park, Satara
Cooler weather today allowed for a very productive day out. We decided to drive north checking open plains
for specific birds. A pride of Lion in golden morning light painted a perfect picture. Frank calls Temminck's Courser out in the same vicinity. Chestnut-backed Sparrow Lark; Cut-throat and Red-headed Finch; Kori
Bustard; Secretary Bird and Larklike Bunting were twitched. We waited the rain out at Olifants camp. This has the best view in the park looking down onto the Olifants River. Not surprisingly we had Mocking Cliff
Chat in the car park. They sheltered from the rain underneath the car. The return leg was very good. We
drove the length of the river along a quieter road picking up numerous water associated birds. The highlights were Squacco Heron; Sacred Ibis; Collared Pratincole and Yellow-billed Oxpeckers attending Hippo. White-
faced Scops Owl in the day always a pleasure. Lappet-faced Vulture on a nest. White Rhino having a siesta. Mammal watching in the park cannot be ignored and this morning we had glimpses of African Wild Cat. On
our afternoon jaunt we coaxed 4 Levaillant's Cuckoo out with them putting on a fine show for us. Then 3
Cheetah cubs playing in the confidence of having their mother with them stole our hearts. Neil was in his element here snapping away. He showed us his pics later at Tembe which reminded us of how fortunate we
were. We had a quick dinner and bird count in Satara before the group went out on a night drive hosted by Sanparks. What a glorious day!! Not surprisingly the day count was 124.
Route: Drives in the Satara area.
Bird of the Day: Kori Bustard.
Day 5: Thursday, 19th November 2015 ~ The Kruger National Park, Skukuza
We did a short morning drive in windy weather, but thankfully the weather perked up for the rest of the day. Highlights of the drive were close ups of Red-crested Korhaan. At the end of the trip we had 7 members of
this family ticked. An adult Martial Eagle flew by giving us an improved view on the previously seen chick. Breakfast back at camp readied us for the long drive south to Kruger’s capital, Skukuza. En route we lured a
Great Spotted Cuckoo in for a closer look. The master of kickboxing Secretarybird killed and ate a snake in
front of us. We had a pair of Southern Boubous duetting together for all of us to see. Two road side Cheetah glammed up the mammal list for the day. The hard-to-see Stierling's Barred Warbler settled in a sparse tree
affording us cracking views of an elusive bird. At Nkumbe lookout point we relaxed for a while scoping for wildlife in the distance. Large numbers of Elephant; Zebra and Wildebeest were shades of East Africa in
Kruger. What a boon to look down onto a pair of White-headed Vultures. We had to take note of the distance
we still had to travel and reluctantly we had to leave the unidentified rhino in the scope behind as a ‘what may have been’. The route we chose crossed large tracts of open land and produced large numbers of Lesser
Kestrels. The first sand banks we checked on the Sabi River produced a White-crowned Lapwing walking near a Hippo. After checking into our chalets at Skukuza we did a short walk in camp adding Green Pigeon
and Bearded Scrub Robin to our ever growing list. We ate dinner al fresco, a cool pleasant evening.
Route: Satara to Skukuza via Tshokwane Bird of the Day: Lesser Kestrel
Day 6: Friday, 20th November 2015 ~ The Kruger National Park, Pretoriuskop This morning we chose strategic spots which paid off handsomely. The other bonus of which was driving a
short distance at slower speeds. Broad-billed Roller at Skukuza golf club. Terrestrial Brownbul; Grey Tit Flycatcher; Pygmy Kingfisher and possible nest site for Crowned Hornbill at Lake Panic hide. Neil outdid
himself at Paul Kruger Gate bridge by spotting a male Finfoot. This bird is hit and miss and requires sharp
eyes and a great deal of patience at the right habitat. Our country is experiencing a drought at the moment which would explain the extra ordinary view later of male and female on the boat ride on St Lucia. More birds
have come into the estuary as the feeder rivers have dried up. Another slow drive to Pretoriuskop created a very relaxed atmosphere. We had four White Rhino sightings highlighted by a calf suckling from his mum.
Hot and windy conditions made birding tough. We were now in broadleaved woodland and expected specific
birds from this habitat. At days end we managed to record Yellow-throated Petronia; Pale Flycatcher; Yellow-fronted Tinker; Red-headed Weaver and Striped Kingfisher. A Sable bull in his prime could be watched from
a distance. This woodland is also core habitat for this rare animal. We all surmised that given his prime he had to be attached to a herd, something we would prove correct, the following rainy morning. The group
was eager to go on their night drive and recorded Marsh Owl; Square-tailed Nightjar and Bronze-winged Courser. Incidentally this was our ninth Owl of the trip. This was our last night in Kruger.
Lawson’s Birding, Wildlife and Custom Safaris; www.lawsons-africa.co.za; [email protected] 5
Route: Skukuza to Pretoriuskop.
Bird of the Day: Marsh Owl.
Day 7: Saturday, 21st November 2015 ~ Wakkerstroom
The weather had to break after high humidity levels woke us up earlier than usual. We had a much needed rain shower which delayed us for a while. We coaxed two African Cuckoos onto a perch next to the vehicle, a
surreal moment. On the same ridge as the previous evening we caught up with the Sable again. This time
something put them up and as a result we had a fair count of at least 16 animals. We saw no newborns and were sure there were more. John was thrilled with this twitch. Wakkerstroom lay ahead of us at the Southern
end of our sunshine province Mpumalanga. We checked into our country lodge and were birding ready. We combined the wetland with dinner in town. The Bistro would contend with the Ocean basket in St Lucia for
dinner of the trip. Dave ordered crab curry. The wetland was outstanding. Spotted-necked Otters were new,
as were birds like Purple Swamphen; South African Shelduck; African Rail; African Snipe; Intermediate Egret; Black Crowned Night heron; and our resident African Marsh Harrier. We tried our luck after dinner and had
great views of Spotted Eagle Owl under torch light again at the wetland.
Route: Pretoriuskop to Wakkerstroom via Piet Retief. Bird of the Day: Spotted Eagle Owl.
Day 8: Sunday, 22nd November 2015 ~ Wakkerstroom What a day. Long in the saddle but what an unbelievable day, perfect in every way. Windless clear and 19
degrees max. Local guide Lucky Ngwenya was the perfect host and introduced us to his patch. We clocked on at 06h00, had our 1st clock off 16h00 that afternoon. The 1st leg was a bomb. Pearlers like White-bellied
Korhaan; Denham’s Bustard and Bush Blackcap seemed like they were waiting for us. Long-billed Pipit; Cape
Rock Thrush and African Yellow Warbler were scooped up. Mountain Reedbuck were confiding. Next up high altitude birds like Buff-streaked Chat; Eastern Long-billed Lark; Ground Woodpecker; Mountain Wheatear;
Sentinel Rock Thrush and Yellow-breasted Pipit were seen. The Pipit was a triumph with Lucky isolating the spot and Andrew doggedly holding onto this bird in a field of green grass and wild flowers. Certainly one of
the most satisfying windows of the trip. Conscious of the time and the distance we needed to cover we made our way to the other end of the world to walk in a field belonging to Mr and Mrs Botha’s Lark. This couple
were feeding a chick and as a result we could scope them standing still for a while. On the skyline stood
Majuba power station. This coal hungry beast reminded us of the pressure our grassland biome is under from mining. No time for over-reflecting. Rudd’s Lark waited for us at a community owned pan, as did vast
numbers of waterfowl. Neil wanted White-backed Duck of which there were numerous. The heat haze was against us and at 16h00 we had a late lunch and warm coffee. We now were faced with few birds remaining.
After the snack break we decided to go for African Rock Pipit which we found with ease. African Harrier
Hawk and Wailing Cisticola were gripped whilst we were admiring the Pipit. Dinner in someone’s home as Dave put it was great. A home cooked meal with Pavlova for dessert and back to our lodge after we put the
owner’s dogs to bed. Today we saw 25 new birds testament to the new habitats and perfect weather.
Route: Drives in the Wakkerstroom district. Bird of the Day: African Rock Pipit.
Day 9: Monday, 23rd November 2015 ~ Tembe Elephant Park All that remains is Blue Korhaan. The other day someone posted a pic of a Red-crested Korhaan with chick
on Facebook, and I recalled with envy I hadn’t seen this in over 20 years of birding. In perfect morning light we spotted Blue Korhaan in an open field. Scopes brought out the best in this bird and we were all
enthralled. Blue Crane on an egg bottom of the hill at two o’clock. Secretarybird on a night roost at 10
o’clock. The last sighting of our Korhaans was of 3 adults walking away sheparding a chick, a perfect little mini me. Red-capped Larks were new and sightings of several more Cranes completed the loop. We did this
area justice and made our way to the kingdom of the Zulu after breakfast. Tembe lodge is a partnership between the local community and private investors. The community runs a very good show and we were
given a very warm welcome when we arrived. A light lunch preceded an afternoon drive where we quickly
got to grips with Eastern Nicator; Pink-throated Twinspot: Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher; Brimstone Canary and Verraux’s Eagle Owl.

Route: Wakkerstroom to Tembe via Piet Retief and Pongola
Bird of the Day: Blue Korhaan
Day 10: Tuesday, 24th November 2015 ~ Tembe Elephant Park
A full day in the reserve meant we could have high expectations. We leaned on Patrick our host to hunt down Plain-backed and Neergaard’s Sunbirds. We were more than satisfied with the quality of visuals we
had. This reserve has important tracts of sand forest which is the best place to see these Sunbirds. Crowned
Eagle was seen on the wing from the viewing tower which also helped give us perspective of the layout of the reserve. After breakfast we opted to go to the nearby hide to watch Elephant come to drink. This reserve
is home to one of three original Elephant populations in South Africa. We were very fortunate to meet the Elephant ecologist of the reserve in the hide who gave freely of his knowledge of the Elephant. He pointed
out a population 250 strong of which 90 were males. At the hide today we had around 20 and the ecologist
knew each individual there by ivory weights and shapes. Harrier Hawk flitted in and out of the pan and we could observe the face colour change from yellow to apricot. We were glad we did this activity as it exposed
us to a different dimension of bush time and this was the concept of peace. On the afternoon safari we connected with the green side of the reserve namely the swamp and floodplains. It was very dry and in one
place was still burning. We got the iconic shot of Elephant feeding in it and young chicks of African Wattled Lapwing, Senegal Lapwing and Temminck’s Courser were delightful. Crested Guineafowl roost in the camp
and just before dark they engage in the most interesting calls. Buffet style dinner went down well. Another
tough day in Africa…
Route: Drives in Tembe. Bird of the Day: Plain-backed Sunbird.
Day 11: Wednesday, 25th November 2015 ~ St Lucia We had a windy morning drive which was fairly slow bird wise, with the highlight being an African Cuckoo
Hawk hopping around on the ground presumably after termites. This is a major protein source and any eruptions make for great for birding. The staff sang us off with a popular local song Shosholoza, which is
often sung at our rugby test matches. Far to the south lay St Lucia estuary and its gangs of Hippopotami. New birds today were Black Sawwing Swallows; Sand Martin; Blue-cheeked Bee-eater; Ruddy Turnstone;
Whimbrel; Avocet; Little Terns and more. A three course meal was enjoyed at Ocean Basket, a popular
franchise. The bird list grew by 21 today as a result of a rapid habitat change.
Route: Tembe to St Lucia via Hluhluwe. Bird of the Day: Ruddy Turnstone.
Day 12: Thursday, 26th November 2015 ~ St Lucia and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park The morning was spent inside the Eastern Shores section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Southern Banded
Snake Eagle posed for us on a roadside pylon. We edged up to it improving on our visual. Grey Waxbill sat on the forest verge for a few seconds. Green Malkoha put on a stellar performance for us at the viewpoint.
Catalina Bay was our end point. Red-chested Flufftail called below our deck and Rufous-winged Cisticola sat
astride a bulrush perch. The estuary had shrunk and far off thousands of birds could be seen. Too far to be identified but enough to realise the importance of this wetland. Water levels were dropping creating a
paradise for wader watching. Swift Tern was new. Large numbers of Pied Avocet very impressive. The afternoon boat trip came back under black skies, but was highly successful. Greater Flamingo and Finfoot
were favourites. We celebrated yet another successful day at a local Italian restaurant.
Route: Drives in the St Lucia area.
Bird of the Day: Green Malkoha.
Day 13: Friday, 27th November 2015 ~ Eshowe We completed the Gwalagwala trail and did a last estuary mouth check before breakfast and checkout. After
a slow start we improved on our Livingstone’s Turaco sightings and netted three Narina Trogons. The 2nd
sighting was sublime with photos taken of the bird. Whiskered Tern was new on the roost we had our eyes on whilst we were in town. It was wise to get to Dlinza Forest while we had poor weather. It turned out to
be a good call as we were sheltered there. Spotted Ground Thrush within minutes. We completed a full trail
Lawson’s Birding, Wildlife and Custom Safaris; www.lawsons-africa.co.za; [email protected] 7
and towards the end had one on one time with a very non-plussed Blue Duiker. A new mammal twitch.
Patience and a long vigil at the woodland hide netted the targets like Tambourine and Lemon Doves. Red-
backed Mannikin and African Firefinch were also new ticks. We had the last supper at the fort. Our hosts were warm and cheerful.
Route: St Lucia to Eshowe via Mtunzini.
Bird of the Day: Spotted Ground Thrush.
Day 14: Saturday, 28th November 2015 ~ Departure
It’s very convenient to walk straight from your lodge into the forest. We wasted no time in going up to the tower and immersed ourselves into the forest. Again after a while and with patience the morning took shape.
Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon came to us. Red-chested and African Emerald Cuckoos showed themselves.
Black-bellied Starlings and Southern Double Collared Sunbird mobbed an African Goshawk. It was great to look onto birds such as Grey Cuckooshrike and more, a new perspective. After breakfast we did a last bit of
birding in Mtunzini with a local guide. Palmnut Vultures showed well and Green Twinspots and Black-throated Wattle Eye were added. The last official new bird of the trip was Long-crested Eagle just before the airport.
Airport good byes are always hurried. There ended a very successful fortnight in South Africa in early summer.
Route: Eshowe to King Shaka International Airport. Bird of the Day: Eastern Bronze-naped Pigeon.
