More and more, the crane industrydepends on being able to retain the valueof used cranes. One factor that plays avital role in the retention of value of usedcranes is their ability to be tradedinternationally between different regions.

At ConExpo, manufacturers’ and users’representatives met to discuss the state ofthe crane industry, and the effect ofdifferent regional standards.

One of the main sticking points fortrade between crane users in Europe andthe rest of the world has been the revisionto the EU mobile crane standard, EN13000.Under the revision, the rated capacitylimiter override key was moved outsidethe crane cab, in order to prevent misuse. Many US users said they would not buynew or used cranes built to the standard.

At the end of 2010, European users’group ESTA conducted a survey of users, aimed at assessing the affect of the change.Cranes Today understands thequestionnaire received responses from arepresentative number of users. Therespondents raised concerns over theability of their operators to respond toaccidental overloads, and cited at least twocases where near misses were made morehazardous due to the lack of an emergencyswitch, placed within the reach of the crane

operator, allowing full speed on all cranemovements in an emergency situation.Crane operators also said that, as a result ofthe new RCL, they were now more carefulin planning and executing jobs.

CEN’s TC147 WG11, the Europeanwork group responsible for drafting thestandard on mobile cranes, intends anamendment of the standard EN13000:2010covering several topics. They havereceived a letter from ESTA, outlining theESTA survey’s findings. They willconsider that, along with points raised bythe SC&RA through events like theConExpo meeting, and will discuss aproposal for a one-use override switch, which can be used in emergencies, butnot as a routine way of ignoring the RCL.

The approach taken to EN13000,bringing in stakeholders from across theindustry and around the world, points to asmoother method of developing industrystandards. As I discussed with one userassociation leader at ConExpo last week, this sort of development might not lead totrue global standards, but does at leastmake it more likely that regional standardswill be globally acceptable.

British lifting firm GGR Group hasbeen using its unique vacuumlifting robot, the Homer, to glaze

and clad the 7,500 sq m Glasgow Museumof Transport’s external envelope.

The Homer made light work of liftingthe panels, each weighing up to 0.5t, withthe help of a parent vehicle and a vacuumhead.

Before installation could begin,Skanska transported the panels, usingGGR’s MRTA6 vacuum lifter and a forkliftto place them onto a truck in an A- framestillage. The stillage kept the panelsmotionless and in an upright position.

Preassembled at the museum’sconstruction site, the Homer wasattached to one of GGR’s MRTA6 vacuumlifting heads. The robot was then joinedto the fork of a telehandler 360 by itsbase, housing the motors, batteries, specialized lifting arm and hydraulicsystem.

When the panels arrived onsite, theHomer was ready to lift them off thestorage rack and onto the 19.8m highwall.

The attached MRTA6 head provided alifting capacity of 500kg and thetelehandler provided the required 3mheight for the Homer so it could lift andplace 200 windows and 150 total blackfibreglass fascias and soffits.

Thomas Rae, sales manager for GGR inScotland, explains the fine points of theHomer’s operation. “You use thetelehandler to get within a foot of yourwork area, then you use the Homer tomove a foot or so forwards so you’ve got avery accurate operation,’ he said. “TheHomer allows you to lift the head up anddown and to rotate it. The jib on the mainHomer telescopes outwards.”

During the installation stage, anoperator in a cherry picker, with a line-of-sight view, used a remote control tomanoeuver the Homer, inching theplateglass sheet forward.

The six levers which control the headand the hydraulic arm provide 100mm ofparallel movement either side of thehead’s centre axis and 360 degreecontinuous rotation.

“You can angle it to 80 degrees inevery direction, basically. An operatorcan position a panel over the top of his

head and over the machine’s head to thevery tight angles they have at theTransport Museum in the peaks of theroom sections,” Rae says.

The vacuum head had to be adjustedfor varying sizes of plateglass panels.“For a small piece of glass, you have thevacuum cups closer together than for alarge piece of plate, so we change theproportions of the frame on the robot tosuit the particular application,” says Rae.

There is no special trick to preciselypositioning the heavy glass, althoughcareful hand eye coordination is required

to make movements as small as 1mm, aswell as attention to accidental bumps.

“Remember if you’re on the end of atelehandler boom, and it’s windy, there isa bounce element on the end of theboom. You have some residualmovement, which has to do with theflexibility of the machine structure. Ifyou’re doing any movement you have towait until the machine is absolutelysteady before you get the final positionof the item.”

Because the telehandler can drive upto the outer wall, the machine-

mountable Homer is the most efficientrobot to use for the Glasgow museum, but where access via road is impossible,GGR’s other robot, the EMU, canmanipulate glass from inside thebuilding, and offers lifting without theneed to use a telehandler.

“Where the EMU 1000 comes into itsown is where you can’t have access tothe building via the road or street, likean office complex where you can’t havebig machines.”

The name Homer, on a machine whichbears an image of the popular cartooncharacter, is actually an acronym forHigh Operation Mounted EMU Robot.

GGR Group offers other memorably-named robots such as the Geko, andsupplies alternative vacuum heads fordifferent materials like metal, stone, ceramic, glass fiber, or corrugatedpanels. Rae clarifies, “With differentvacuum cups, we can lift surfaces whichare not 100% smooth. The vacuum cup isdifferent in that it has a much thickerpad and has a rubber seal that can makeit tighter.”

GGR makes the Homer available toUK contractors on a hire or purchasebasis, and the business has also soldseveral robots abroad.

Demand for vacuum liftingequipment, and for the Homer, isincreasing. “That’s for two reasons,’ Raesays. “Architects are making windowsbigger, more complex and heavier, andmanual lifting practices that used to beacceptable a few years ago, like 6 menlifting a pane of glass, tend to beoutlawed these days.” Main contractorSkanska will complete work on themuseum this Summer. !

A classic Manitowoc crane, the 230t 888crawler crane, was unveiled as the firstNorth American crane to undergoremanufacture as part of ManitowocCrane Care’s EnCORE Partnersprogramme at ConExpo this year.

At a special ceremony in Las Vegas, the rebuilt crane was handed back to itsowner Turner Industries of Baton Rouge, who originally bought the crane in 1996.

H&E Equipment Services, who have 25years of experience rebuilding Manitowoccranes, completed remanufacture of the888 at their Birmingham, Alabama facilityin less than 20 weeks.

Manitowoc picked the discontinuedmodel 888 crawler crane an ideal choice todemonstrate the benefits of the EnCOREPartners programme.

The final remanufacturing cost for theManitowoc 888 was around $750,000, afraction of the $1.7m it would cost toreplace with a crane of comparableperformance like the Manitowoc 14000.

Manitowoc Crane Care vice presidentBob Hund commented: “Barring anyneeded major structural repairs, remanufacturing typically costs about 50%of the price of a new crane.”

The Manitowoc 888 was also one of themanufacturer’s most popular cranesthanks to the Ringer attachment, whichboosts its capacity nearly threefold to660t.

For Turner Industries, having alreadyinvested in several attachments for thiscrane back in 1996, the case forremanufacturing became even morecompelling.

Dave Stewart, operations manager atH&E Equipment Services explained:“Turner Industries have a ringerattachment which goes around the crane, and with more counterweight and adifferent boom, it gives it a higher capacity.

“But with that particular attachmentit’s very expensive, it’s $3m. With thismachine not being made by Manitowoc

any longer it made a lot of sense for us torebuild it for Turner so they couldcontinue to use that Ringer attachment.”

All cranes remanufactured through theEnCORE Partners programme undergo a230 point crane inspection to ensure thework meets the standards Manitowoc setsout for it’s EnCORE Partners.

Describing the work done on TurnerIndustries’ 888 crawler crane, Hund said:“It was disassembled, shot-blasted andnon-destructive testing was performed onall structural welds and components.

“All machine surfaces were checked fortrueness and structural integrity and 100%of wear items, such as bearings, cushionsand seals, were replaced.

“Hydraulic components were replacedwith EnCORE supplier remanufacturedcomponents and the crane was fitted withall new OEM hoses. Electrical componentssuch as CPUs, junction boxes and wiringharnesses were also updated andreplaced.

“The power plant was overhauled andupdated to the latest OEM specification, including the engine, the radiator, thepump drive, the cooler and the clutch, andwhere necessary engines are brought tocurrent emissions regulations.

“The crane also underwent load testingand then was certified by Manitowocstandards to the original load charts. Anymajor product improvements or updatesare incorporated into this process.”

Nautilus hook pinches awards, not fingersRaking in its second award withinthe last year, Nautilus’ safety rigginghook won the Offshore SupportJournal Innovation of the Yearaward.

The recent award follows on theheels of the Woelfel Best MechanicalEngineering Achievement, given bythe American Society of MechanicalEngineers’ International PetroleumTechnology Institute. Nautiluscollected the award at the May 2010Offshore Technology Conference inHouston.

The safety rigging hook has a newfeature which eliminates “latch-lock”pinch injuries. Its forward-thinking design

constitutes the first major rigging hookinnovation in 30 years, the company said.

The award was received by Bill Toon,

managing director at NautilusRigging, who expressed his pleasureand gratitude. He said, “We aredelighted to have won this awardwhich is further recognition from theshipping industry of the significantcontribution and impact our hooks aremaking towards improving safety inthe offshore support vessel sector.

“We were up against some toughopposition and we would like to thankthe industry representatives who tookthe time to cast their vote for NautilusHooks.”

Toon went on to say that that an ROV-friendly subsea version of the hooks willbe released later in 2011.

On March 1, Wolffkran launched thepilot for a cloud application to delivercrane service calls via iPhone.

Cloud applications are run from theweb, rather than a user's device. Theycan often offer more functionality, withoutrequiring users to install large orprocessor hungry applications locally, meaning they can run on devices likesmartphones.

During the first phase of the cloudapplication’s pilot, Wolffkran technicians

in Switzerland will receive SAP calls usingan iPhone version of the application.

Wolffkran claims that substitutingcloud for traditional software willexpedite several processes. A user’s datawill be quickly transferred even when atheir system is down, expediting billing.

It will save the user the time andexpense of software installation,Wolffkran says, and make data availableto them via iPhone.

The arrangement can also speed

mobilization by providing Wolffkranschedulers with live information on whichengineers are engaged on service calls.

Andreas Berg, CIO at Wolffkran, said.“All our decision makers wereimmediately impressed with thisinnovative solution, which is a first stepfor us in mobilizing and accelerating ourSAP processes.”

The second phase of the pilot willmake the servicing application availableoutside of Switzerland.

A s Cranes Today editor Will Northcommented in March, the latestresults announcements and

comments from industry leaders suggestthere was an uptick in crane sales in thelast few weeks of 2010. The question forthe industry at this show was whetherthose sales had continued. Largely, itseems, they have. The manufacturersCranes Today spoke to reported ongoingsales, and were calmly confident for theyear ahead. That good news appeared tohold true through the supply chain;Manitowoc Cranes president Eric Etchart, for example, told Cranes Today that atleast 60% of cranes sold to dealers hadbeen retailed.

The show organisers, the AEM,described the event as a ‘resoundingsuccess’. It’s rare for any show organiserto describe their event as a terrible failure(although in recent years a few shouldhave), but this time the claims are easy

enough to believe. The show apparentlyattracted 120,000 registered attendees, making it the largest construction relatedevent in North America since 2008.

Megan Tanel, AEM vice president ofexhibitions and events, said, “Theconstruction industry has been throughsome very tough times, with recordunemployment, since the last ConExpo inMarch 2008. With these positive numbersand the industry support of the shows,we’re optimistic about the future andlooking forward to seeing these new salesorders fulfilled.”

Mike Haberman, chairman of theConExpo 2011 management committeeand president of Gradall Industries, said,“There was such a tremendous upbeatfeeling at the shows; it was really great tosee our industry looking ahead with someenthusiasm after the recession.”

Cranes Today saw that optimism on itsown stand. Over the course of the event

the magazine’s stand saw a steady flow ofvisitors, almost all of whom had goodthings to say about the event and themagazine. While there was somevariation in levels of confidence, much ofthe talk at the stand was of new projectsand improving business.

We’ll be covering the event over twoissues. We start this month with reportson products from Sany, Link-Belt, Liebherr,Terex, Altec, Broderson, Jekko, andXCMG. Next month’s coverage willinclude Manitowoc, Tadano, Kobelco andManitex, among others, interviews withsenior figures and product reviews. !

After volcanoes and economic crises slowed business at the lasttwo trade shows in this three-year cycle of global constructionequipment events, hopes were high for this year’s lead event,ConExpo in Las Vegas. While the show might not have matchedthe feverish energy of 2008, it did largely meet expectations

The turning point?

Sany

Sany displayed a range of new cranes atConExpo, including three new roughterrains, the SRC860 (first revealed at anevent at the company’s Peachtree City,Georgia, plant), SRC860XL and SRC840(both new at the show), and three newself-assembly crawlers, the SCC8300,SCC8200 and SCC8100.

One of the most striking products onthe stand however was the company’snew crawler cab, designed by PorscheDesign Studios, and featured on the 300tSCC8300 and 200t SCC8200. From theoutside, the new cab displays strikingcurves. Inside, it appears comfortable andspacious, with well-designed ergonomiccontrols at easy reach.

One key element on the stand, but lessobvious than the cranes towering overvisitors, was a brigade of US crane industryveterans recently recruited to the Chinesecompany’s US arm. Sany has appeared atConExpo three times now, so it is neitherentirely new, nor fully established in theUS. As a Chinese-owned business that isrelatively new to the US market, investingin US facilities and staff is vital to makingan impact on the market. Sany showsevery sign of recognising this.

At the last ConExpo, the companyannounced its acquisition of a sizable chunkof land in Peachtree City, Georgia. Theplant is well located both for reaching UScustomers in the busy Gulf Coast region, and for bringing in components from Chinavia ports in New Orleans and by a nearbyrail line. Earlier this year, it formally openedthe first phase of the plant.

Production of excavators and concretepumps is expected to start in thesummer, with rough terrains andcrawlers expected to come on line overthe next year. The plant will befabricating crawler lattices andcounterweights, and assembling finishedcranes using other components, like thecarbody, fabricated in China.

Cranes Today spoke to two of SanyAmerica’s US recruits, Richard Hunter, theproduct manager for cranes, and JeffDreger, product marketing manager forcrawler cranes. Sany’s aim, Hunter says,is to be one of the top five constructionequipment manufacturers in the world.

Part of that plan has been to focus onquality, while remaining competitive onprice. Hunter says, “Sany made its markin China by using high qualitycomponents in important areas. It hasglobal partnerships with Cummins and

Rexroth. Customers in China have beenprepared to pay a premium for that. Sanyhas made a huge commitment to service, with GPS [and online condition reporting]on every crane allowing servicetechnicians to diagnose almost everyproblem.”

The company has established itself as aglobal player by opening plants in Brazil,India and the USA. While the Chineseplant will continue to focus on its corecompetencies of robot welding, boom truckand rough terrain boom fabrication, overseas plants will contribute locallygenerated design, assembly, somefabrication of other parts, sales and service.

At Peachtree City, Hunter says, Sanywill have space for up to 1 million sq ft ofproduction under the roof, with more roomoutside for test areas. A 150,000 sq ftparts depot is opening soon, with a servicetraining centre coming shortly after.

Link-Belt

Link-Belt showed an impressive display ofnew cranes, including a third model in itstelecrawler line, the 110USt TCC-110, a new150USt lattice boom crawler, the 238 HSL,and an updated version of its 90t roughterrain, the RTC-8090 Series II.

The company also revealed its new totalcrane operating system, Link-Belt Pulse.Designed in-house, the system is builtaround a full colour display, combiningrated capacity limiter, boom extend modecontroller, self diagnostic capabilities, andcontinuous monitoring of multiple cranefunctions and conditions.

The highlight of the stand though wasone truly groundbreaking crane, thecompany’s first in-house designed allterrain, the ATC-3275. The 275USt crane isthe first modern all terrain crane to bedesigned and built in North America. Inthe early days of all terrains, Grove andLink-Belt had both built small (~8t) allterrains for the US, but no one has yetdesigned and built an all terrain at moderncapacities wholly in the US.

Link-Belt has sold all terrains with itsbranding in the US for a number of years. However, these were rebadged TadanoFauns, sold under a distribution agreement. This agreement was terminated earlier thisyear, before Link-Belt announced its ownrange. Throughout their conversationswith Cranes Today, Link-Belt’s managersspoke highly of the collaboration with theJapanese-German crane builder.

The extent of Link-Belt’s commitment toUS production is impressive. Not only hasthe company invested in US design, it hasexpanded its production to allow it toproduce key components in Lexington,Kentucky. Telescopic crane productmanager Rick Curnutte says, “The workwe’ve done on the Lexington factory ispart of a plan to build our product line. We’re the only US manufacturer with ourown boom forming facility. It was verydifficult to get boom components when themarket was busy, with everyone relying onone supplier. We were unable to achievedeliveries, and you can’t go to thecustomer and blame a subcontractor forthat. So, now we have our own facility.”

Key to the crane though is its NorthAmerican-focused design. It is often hardfor outsiders to grasp how difficult it is toroad a crane in the US. With no harmonisedroad transport rules over the US’s 50 statesand numerous municipalities, one of thebiggest challenges for US users is crossingborders between regulatory regimes.

Curnutte explains, “One of the biggestthings in the design was the wheel base, making it more North American friendly. We talk about it as North American, butwe’ve also looked at what the rest of theworld wants. The counterweight and fly, have all been grouped into loadouts under45,000lb.

“North America is one of the toughestplaces in the world to move cranes. In

Europe, you can go on the road with axleweights of up to 14t. The minimumcounterweight of German machines oftentakes up to six trucks here. This machinecan do it in four trucks, as none of thecounterweights weigh more than 22,000lb.The crane has been configured to get thebest utilisation of loadout. On othermachines, you always had to take the fullloadout. This machine only needs the traycounterweight to be able to lift with theauxiliary winch.

“The ATC-3275 has a Cummins engineon the lower and upper. The lower engineis 2010 EPA certified, so it can be used onthe road in California. The upper engineis 2011 Tier IV Interim.

“It’s fast. European all terrains oftentravel at 50mph maximum; this can run at62mph, so it can keep up with the loadouttrucks.

“We designed a one man driver’s cab.Customers told us that they often use thejump seat as a glorified storage box, so wereplaced it with proper lockable storagewith room for a ladder.”

The crane isn’t just designed for the USthough. The next step will be making itready for export. Curnutte says, “We doexpect to bring it in and around Europe. The markets that are hot now though areAustralia and Latin America. The nextthing to do is to design an export engine,so the crane can be used where there isno ultra low sulphur diesel fuel.”

Liebherr

Liebherr lined up a selection of managingdirectors for its press conference atConExpo, including board of directorsmember Winfried Boehm.

While each MD pointed to improvingdemand for cranes in their respectivesegments, Boehm picked out thehighlights of a broadly positive 2010 forthe manufacturer.

Liebherr Group added !620m to itsturnover, which increased by 9% to !7.6bnlast year. This increase was solely downto the performance of the group’sconstruction machinery business, whichincreased its turnover 16% to !4.7bn.

The lion’s share of constructionmachinery sales originated from Liebherr’searthmoving and mining productsdivision, and despite the mobile cranesbusiness growing to !1.8bn in 2010, thisaccounted for less than 6% of the group’stotal growth last year.

Maritime crane sales accounted for 9%of this growth, generating !724m.

Neither the tower crane or crawlercrane divisions posted significant growthdespite reporting increased market sharein the tower crane market and an increasein crawler sales since Q4 of 2010.

Liebherr-Werk Biberach managingdirector Matthias Donner noted thepresence of Liebherr’s production facilitiesin Brazil and India would help the firm toexploit the growing demand for towercranes in emerging markets.

He also highlighted the tower cranemarket’s recent trending towards rental.

On Liebherr’s stand US delegates wereable to get their first look at the 81K fasterecting crane, capable of semi-automaticballasting, that requires only eight liftingmovements to install.

Liebherr’s delegates explained howsemi-automatic quick-connection lockingbetween the tower, slewing platforms andjib guying rods significantly reduce set-uptimes. Featuring driveline and control-system technology, along with theMicromove fine positioning system, the81K allows efficient handling of loads, even allowing loads to be lifted in two-part mode to eliminate time-intensive re-reeving.

With a maximum 40.4m hook height, this crane can lift 1.4t at its maximumworking radius of 45m.

Also making its US debut was the 285EC-B 12 Litronic flat-top tower crane.

Its modular design emphasisestransportability for easy shipping in sea-freight containers, while the‘Connect&Work’ assembly systemfacilitates quick assembly of the counterjib at ground level.

The LiConnect system aids speedyattachment of the jib section so that onelift later, the central unit is in position andthe crane is almost fully erected.

A maximum reach of 75m allows thelifting of loads up to 2.6t at the tip end.

Representing Liebherr-Werk Nenzingon the stand was one of Liebherr’soutstanding performers in the globalcrawler market, the LR 1600/2.

Liebherr-Werk Nenzing managingdirector Gerhard Frainer expects the 600tcrawler to continue selling well during2011, following signs of a slow recoveryfor the crawler market.

Frainer commented: “In the lift cranerange there have been signs of a recovery, especially from the crane rentalcompanies. However there is a strongertrend for the medium sized, 150t to 300t,or the big cranes, 300t plus, rather thansmaller sized lift cranes.”

For mobile cranes, Liebherr-WerkEhingen managing director CristophKleiner noted that his division had soldand shipped 1033 mobile cranes last year, despite the crisis “still biting hard” on themobile crane market.

He highlighted that growth inemerging markets had managed to offsetsome of the problems experienced due tothe all time lows within US all-terraincrane, rough terrain crane and truckcrane markets.

As Liebherr’s order book growsgradually but steadily, with orders likeALL Erection and Crane Rental’s recentpurchase of an LTM 1250-6.1 and LTM1200-5.1 coming in, Kleiner forecastsmoderate growth for Liebherr’s mobilecrane division in 2011.

After a painfully poor 2010 for the craneindustry, Terex CEO Ron DeFeo is quick topoint out that the industry is drawingnearer to the light at the end of the tunnel, albeit slowly.

Sharing the cautious optimism of manyConExpo exhibitors’ forecasts for 2011,DeFeo said: “We are in a recovery mode,we expect recovery in our businesses inmost markets and sectors in 2011, withcranes probably being the laggard.

“We’re happy if the crane market ismore positive, but I don’t want to getenthusiasm ahead of intelligence.”

Last year Terex managed $4.4bn in netsales, and the firm predicts an increase ofbetween 14% and 23% for 2011.

And following on from this themanufacturer is targeting a 12% operatingprofit and $8bn in net sales by 2013.

Compared to several years ago, whensales to customers outside of Europe andthe US constituted around 26% of Terex’sprofits, the company is increasingly lookingto emerging markets to form a significantportion of the firm’s sales figures.

That said, despite the current recordlow demand for cranes in the US market,Terex still managed to take large ordersfor 22 Terex cranes from US distributorCropac Equipment, and for 40 cranes fromUS firm Empire Crane.

Over a third of the units ordered byCropac Equipment were new TerexRoadmaster 9000 truck cranes.

The Roadmaster 9000 has its outriggersconfigured in an X-type arrangement that, according to Terex, helps it out-perform itsclosest rivals in terms of lift capacity.

Although this may add somewhat to itspopularity, the real selling points for USbuyers are the single cylinder hydraulicboom which reduces gross vehicle weightwithout drastically affecting set-up times, and the third of its five axles being aliftable ‘pusher axle’, giving the truckcrane the ability to comply with all stateregulations across the US.

The Roadmaster 9000 features a 164.5ftboom, with a maximum system length of242.8ft, and a 100USt lifting capacity.

Despite the depressed American truckcrane market, Terex also decided tointroduce two vehicles for the boom truckmarket, the BT 28106 and the Crossover6000 truck-mounted crane.

While the BT28106 is an updatedversion of Terex’s 26106, with a 106ft boomand 28USt lift capacity, the Crossover 6000is so named because its design is intendedto let it to fulfil the traditional role of boomtruck in addition to its standard duties.

Again the Terex five-axle truck-mounted crane is not restricted by

differing US road regulations, and has amaximum lift capacity of 60USt, with a110ft maximum boom length.

Like the Roadmaster 9000, it featuresthe X-type outrigger arrangement toprovide greater stability and dispersion ofload forces.

It will eventually be available with arange of carriers, in addition to theFreightliner chassis, including Kenworth.

The last of Terex’s new productofferings unveiled at this year’s ConExpois the 100USt RT 100 rough-terrain crane.

Boasting a maximum boom length of174ft, Terex claim the RT 100 has thelongest boom length in its class.

Compliant with EN13000 and ASMEB30.5 standards the crane also featuresthe same ergonomically designed cab asthe Roadmaster 9000, which was made foroperator comfort by an experiencedGerman sportscar manufacturer.

All of this investment in fully-roadablecranes for a US market that is stillstruggling may seem risky, even withmany optimistic that the long-anticipatedHighways Bill will soon be signed.

However DeFeo says that this bill, which he dubs ‘the non-stimulativestimulation bill’ is well intentioned butdestined to be ineffective.

He predicts that, as a broad awarenessof the need for infrastructure investmentspreads through the US Congress, consensus will eventually evolve intopractical measures.

Terex

A new Terex tower crane transition section on display at ConExpo. Now, users of Peiner and Comedil cranes can build one crane out ofboth types of components. Bringing together different legacy brands inone company has been a key element in Terex’s corporate strategy inrecent years. The company’s international engineering teams, from the USand Germany, have worked together to build cranes like the Crossover 6000.

At Conexpo, American boom truckmanufacturer Altec demonstrated thetilting cab on its AC23 95B hydraulictelescopic crane. The tilt was introducedas an option on all of its mobile cranesthat have a swing seat, a rangeencompassing cranes with liftingcapacities from 26–38t.

The AC23 95B has a 21t lifting capacity

with a 29m boom. In the cab, the electrichydraulic outrigger control allows forupper or downjack control in the cab witha large bubble level. It allows operators toadjust the levelling from inside the cab. ‘Ifyou’re level from the centre pin, thatallows you to have control,’ said accountmanager Ron Risch. “Automatictransmission is attached to the boom asopposed to the table. We’re the only onesthat do that. You’re looking down, whileother people are looking to the side.

“We have sold half a dozen orders, to acustomer in South Carolina.”

While the range improves, attention tosafety standards remains a constant,‘We’ve had things which comply with thenew OSHA rule for 6 years,’ Risch said.

Altec further expanded its range toinclude a pressure digger, which isnotable for its ergonomic controls, aspokesperson said. The digger was ondisplay at the booth for Kenworth, whichmanufactured the chassis.

American pick-and-carry crane manufacturerBroderson showed a prototype of the brand new I-C400, a 25t capacity industrial crane for outdoor use.

The I-C 400 includes a range of features that arenew to Broderson, including new joystick controls. The crane also has videos on the winch and on curbside outriggers,

“This is unique for this size of crane. Largercranes often have it,” said Steve Burton, chief brandofficer. Like its predecessor the 15t I-C 200, it hasfour-wheel steering and four-wheel drive. Thedeveloping range is working upwards in capacity.

“We haven’t released it yet. We plan on going intoproduction in Q4. We protype tested it and are hereto receive customer feedback,” said Burton. “Wedon’t want to take an order until we’re ready torelease it.”

When the crane reaches a production stage, it willbe distributed globally. In addition, Brodersonannounced that its new export head is Nelson Morris, who formerly managed the parts replacement

Jekko, the Italian crane manufacturerspecialising in minicranes, introduced itsSPX 1040 minicrane for the NorthAmerican market. The crane was firstintroduced for the EU market at Baumain April of last year. Australian CraneDistributions officially launched it inAustralia and New Zealand that May.

Following a client requirement forincreased capacities, the SPX 1040 wasdesigned to have a larger lifting capacitythan other Jekkos, despite its smallfootprint, a mere 4m. “1040 is ourbiggest to date,” said Keith Shank, distributor for Jekko and owner of C4cranes, a hire company out ofMinnesotta. The 4t capacity and 23m tipheight makes it the tallest and largest inthe range.

The new crane will be useful forapplications that require heavy lifting intight spaces. “These are more suited forsteel and petroleum plants. Ourcompetitors need 6m to bring in a 200tcrane, but there is the restricted access inthese plants. The first one is going toHawaii, we had interest from the US andCanada,” Shank said.

XCMG

XCMG, the Chinese equipmentmanufacturer located in Xuzhou, showedits 70t QY 70K and its 130t QY 130K truckcranes at Conexpo. Introduced five yearsago, they are distributed worldwide.

“These are very popular in SouthAmerican Countries, especially in Brazil. The market share in Brazil is almost 30%,”said Shi Wei Dong, vice president ofXCMG.

XCMG’s products generated interestfrom customers based in the US, Canadaand Asia. “They’re interested becauseour product is competitive on price andreliability,” Dong said.

The company produces 20,000 units peryear, which is around 60% of all cranesmanufactured globally, XCMG says. Salesrevenues have kept apace withproduction. Following Conexpo thecompany announced a record breakingdaily sales volume of 133 units, and last

month’s highest daily sales volume was100 units.

China remains XCMG’s largest market, with demand generated by construction

and railway projects for its crawler, truck, all terrain and pick and carry cranes, inaddition to its earth moving andexcavating equipment.

Segment report | Derricks

33www.cranestodaymagazine.com | CRANES TODAYApril 2011

The derrick continues to be an efficient bridge building tool, despite the perception that it isoutmoded. The beauty of the derrick’s simple tripod structure is that it is lightweight and easyto operate, but it must compete with larger capacity, heavier, more specialised equipment.Cristina Brooks reports

B ridge building equipment trendsare difficult to ascertain becauseeach kind of equipment has its

advantage, each contractor has theirpreferred method, and practices differ inthe US and EU.

“It depends upon the size of the bridge, the site constraints, the materials, thereare just so many factors that effect howyou are building a bridge,” says MikeWade, technical director at bridge buildingequipment manufacturer Dorman Long. The options get more complex asarchitects push design forward to createlarger bridges. “There is no trend inequipment, it is more the way the

equipment is used that makes itinteresting,” he says.

Bridges made of steel or concretesegments can be built using anycombination of derricks, mobile cranes, tower cranes, floating cranes, gantries, and nose recovery systems.

Thomas Eggert, operations leader atEnerpac bridge equipment manufacturers, clarifies. “It really comes down to thedesign of the bridge: Whether they haveprecast concrete segments or steelcomponents. We tend to use hydrauliccylinders to push or pull the segment in orout,” hydraulic cylinders being generallyeither strand jacks or climbing jacks.

Mobile cranes remain the most popularoption for steel bridges and smallerbridges. “Most small motorway bridgesthat you drive under every day will be putin by a crane, what proportion of bridgesis that in the world, 85%? If you can get acrane in near enough to lift the bridge, that is the way to do it. But very oftenyou just can’t do it, either because it itstoo big, or its over a railway track or a4km wide river,“ says Wade. That iswhen contractors rely on launchingsystems and derricks.

F&M Mafco is the world’s largest derricksupplier. It is a family-owned business.Executive vice president Bob McKenna, Jr.,

Buildingbridges

Derricks | Segment report

CRANES TODAY | www.cranestodaymagazine.com April 2011

says that the company has contractedderricks for use on many recent bridgeprojects. “For example, we used derricks onthe Ting Kau Bridge in Hong Kong, the USAship channel, Annersons Island inVancouver. We just finished the AudubonBridge in Louisiana. We’re working on thePort Mann Bridge project near Vancouver.”

Tim Fox, who works in internationalsales at F&M Mafco, says derricks canreplace cranes and decrease logisticscosts. “You could use a 500t crane or atiny derrick. Cranes work by reducing thereach and the radius. For every yard youlose efficiency, and that is the principle ofthe derrick on the bridges. A crane needsa concrete counterweight, while a derrickuses the bridge as the counterweight.”

The great stability and substantial liftingpower of derricks was demonstratedrecently during building of the ColoradoRiver Bridge, part of the Hoover DamBypass, when a cableway highline cranefell from the steep cliffs. F&M Mafco’sAmerican S-70 Derrick, with a capacity of446t, was adapted with an extended jib andplatform to serve as a replacement until anew system could be developed.

Derricks working separately or in pairscan be used instead of floating cranes forlifting modular bridge segments of up to200t, depending on what material they aremade of, and may have the advantage ofgreater stability.

F&M Mafco has made a bid to use aderrick instead of a water based crane forwork beginning on the Forth Bridge inEdinburgh. “Its hard to keep thesegments stable on a water based crane, where the water is choppy and the boommoves 3m–4m. Also, if you did it from thewater with a crane, it’s a higher cost,£50,000–£100,000 per week,” says Fox.

“If cost is a concern and speed is aconcern, a derrick will win almost everytime. On the Port Mann Bridge, they havederricks on one end of the bridge and astrand jack system on the other. We weremillions cheaper,” says McKenna.

Similarly to a rail-mounted gantry, aderrick may be mounted on a movablesled for constructing different parts of thebridge. Two derricks may be set up tosimultaneously work outwards from thetower in the centre of the water toconstruct bridges rapidly.

This capability gives the derrick anadvantage over the gantry and jack, whichrequires reassembly for working inmultiple directions.

Launching jack systems are morewidely used than derricks in Europe. Thisis partially because of architecturaldifferences. “In the US, the rooftops onpower stations were originally built totake a derrick crane. Now they are builtto use a tower crane and in the EU theyare normally built to take tower cranes.

Everyone in the EU has to come toAmerica to hire derricks,” says Fox.Derricks are commonplace partially owingto their adaptability to the rooftops of highrise buildings in American cities.

UK-based Dorman Long providesstrand jacking equipment to EU clients. Itrecently supplied DL-S185 strand jacks fora jacking system to Edimo Metallo S.p.A inItaly. The system was used to launch the1,000t Ponte Verde steel arch bridge overa railway line in Padua.

Jacking systems are built to order andcan involve different lifting equipment. They are used to construct cable staybridges, suspension bridges and boxgirder bridges. Strand jacks can stretchwire rope across from pier to pier and pullbridge components across the gap. Thejacks on one side let the wire rope out butsimultaneously hold it back, while thejacks on the other side pull.

“Launched bridges are used over arailway because there’s often limited timeyou can work over a railway andlaunching is considered safer,” says Wade.

Alternatively, strand jacks can beattached to gantries that sit on the bridgeand lift vertically to pick components upfrom underneath it. “Almost invariably, weuse strand jacks mounted on some kind ofgantry for lifting the deck sections.Basically strand jacks give very goodpower in a small package. Typically wemight be using 300t strand jacks on acable stay bridge,” says Wade.

Sometimes jacking systems worksimultaneously with steelwork towers.“The tower system itself is just a structure. On the structure we put strand jacks orclimbing jacks and those provide the motivepower to lift the load. It can be a decksection, petrochemical vessel, it can be aroof structure, or an offshore application.”The simplicity of the strand jack systemmakes it good for offshore and export toDormon Long’s largest market in China.

“We are not using more complex

Page 35: Cranes Today Apr

Derricks | Segment report

CRANES TODAY | www.cranestodaymagazine.com April 2011

equipment because it is not necessary, andalso because we can’t be taking veryadvanced technology into remote parts ofthe world. We have to use robusttechnology. It’s mainly to do withequipment control systems - things likesensors and load control systems. If we tryto be clever with how much we movethings in a hot, marine environment, thatkind of equipment can mean less reliability.Simplicity means reliability. The benefit ofa modular lifter over a crane is that themobilization cost is a lot lower. Theoperational cost is a lot lower. Also there’sfar less machinery,” says Wade.

Comparing the strand jack to thederrick, he adds: “They each have theiradvantages.”

One of the advantages of derricks, saysWade, is that they can slew and luff, whilestrand jacks on gantries will only havelimited transverse movement. “Derricksare generally used for lighter pieces youmount on the end of a bridge deck. Youcan pick up smaller units with a derrick, but what we can do is pick up pieces of600–800t, and what we’d use is a gantry.”

The European and American bridgeconstruction divide may not be a questionof pure engineering theory, but of practice.“The biggest problem we have is that a lotof people don’t understand the operation ofa derrick and it needs to be explained,”says McKenna, which is why F&M Mafcohas a training program for derrickoperators. Tim Fox observes. “One of thethings I’ve noticed,” says Fox, “Is that inthe US derrick bridge build is commonplace, and in the EU they seem to like the bridgelauncher. Young engineers coming out of

college use the launcher, but the derrick isvery efficient. Its probably experience; ifyou used one before you’d probably use oneagain.” He adds that this perception hasnot hurt sales. “Its starting to feel like itscoming back. We have a few more orders. Itis more economical.”

The main reason that the derrick canbe more economical is that it is rented andnot sold like built-to-order jacks, whichgenerally can’t have multiple applications.“One of the disadvantages is that they arepretty customized, although somecompanies have used adaptablelaunchers,” says Tom Eggert. It costsfrom $100,000–$200,000 for an Enerpacjacking system and rental is not common.

For strand jack buyers, “They end upwith capital costs that they can get somerecovery on, its normally quite long term. Ifyou buy you end up with control over that

cost if there’s a delay to the program,”says Wade. “For shorter projects ourcustomers normally rent the equipment”.

The derrick’s small size and costeffectiveness make it popular for lifting onrooftops, particularly for installation of airconditioning units and building signage.F&M Mafco recently installed a sign for theLas Vegas Cosmopolitan hotel and Casino.Liebherr and Terex Comedil also havederrick packages for rooftop disassembly oftower cranes.

At Liebherr, Carlos Monteiro, projectmanager responsible for derricks, saysthat the Liebherr derrick packageintended for dismantling tower cranesfrom rooftops is increasingly popular.“There is a growing demand fordismantling operations and this is fact. This is because high rises are an efficientuse of space in cities. In our case we arelooking to provide for this application.”

Timberland Equipment’s LawrenceClark has also seen increasing use of thederrick package for towerdeconstruction. “We have one derrickpackage locally. The market tends to be alittle soft as the US market has been alittle slow; the bulk is the Middle Eastand South America,” he says.

The future for derricks and theirapplications on larger bridges may dependon engineers and architects. However, byproviding derrick and tower cranepackages, manufacturers have ensuredthat derricks will remain a staple forrooftop lifts in cities growing upwards. !

Mecca, Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Bin Laden group is building the Abraj Al-BaitTowers complex containing the Mecca Royal Clock Hotel Tower.

Reaching a colossal 600m, the tower overlooks the Kaaba,a sacred structure in Islam.

Upon its completion, the clock tower will be the tallest inthe world, provide lodging for about 65,000 people, prayer spacefor 3,800 people, and convention space.

Construction works, which began in 2004, will comprise95 floors, with six floors constructed from fireproof sandwichpanels, and four staircases using steel elements of 100 mmthickness. Each face of the clock is 45m wide. It will beilluminated by 2m LED lights and embellished with 98m mosaicglass pieces and 24 carat gold

Cranes for lifting clock tower structural components havebeen provided by a range of suppliers, and among these areseveral Liebherr tower cranes. Liebherr equipment was alsoused to install screens weighing up to 45t to create 156,000 sqm of additional shadow in the Piazza prayer area.

Last year, Hanwha, a Korean engineering and construction firm, worked withcontractor Associated Transtech Contracting (ASTRACO) to expand the SamraPower Plant, which is publicly owned by the Jordanian state.

ASTRACO, based out of Abu Dhabi in the UAE, has completed power stationsand industrial projects for clients like the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company.

After the first stage of construction, the Samra Power Plant operated with acapacity of 300MW.

The second phase of theproject has added two gasturbines and a steam turbine inorder to form a combined plant. This will raise the currentinstalled capacity to 600mW.

The expansion of theexisting power plant started inApril 2010 and was completedin February 2011. It includedinstalling two 140mW ALSTOMgas turbines, plant works, afuel tank farm and gas pipelineworks. The stack wascomposed of sections whichhad a combined height of 4m.

Lifting the stack requiredthe use of a 50t Grove TM750Esupplied by Yousef MousaCrane Rental, while anothercompany supplied a LiebherrLTM1140.

Doha, Qatar

A group of contractors are building the Musheirebproject, which is intended to regenerate the city centreof Doha, the nation’s capital.

The Musheireb will replace 220 city buildings with agreen, mixed use, walkway-oriented development. Carparks will place residential vehicles underground.

The development will contain 226 buildings, house27,637 residents, and include infrastructure works suchas a district cooling plant and a 66 KV Substation. Someof the buildings have steel beam roof structures.

Contractors Hyundai and HBK JV have selected fiveLiebherr tower cranes with capacities ranging from 200–550t to lift steel components weighing 15-20t.

The largest crane, the Liebherr 550 EC-H 40 tower crane, is configured with a 71.5 m jib and a hook height of 66 m. The 550EC-H40 offers a maximum lifting capacity of up to 40 t and 5.7 t at maximum jib length. The 550EC-H 40 was selected because of itslifting capacity and micro movement during beam placement, according to Liebherr. The first buildings are near completion, and restof the project will be completed in 2015.

Dubai, UAE

Kele Contracting of Dubai are building the D1 tower, aresidential complex which overlooks Dubai Creek, thesaltwater water inlet that divides the city. The 80 storey D1tower will house 529 luxury apartments, a cinema, a gymand a pool. A sister development to the world’s tallestresidential tower, the Q1 tower on the Gold Coast inAustralia, the D1 tower is a joint venture project betweenAustralian Sunland Group and Enshaa.

Construction began in 2007 and has involved internalportioning works, installation of mechanical, hydraulic, fire andelectrical services and external glazing.

Since October Kele has been using a Unic 295 spidercrane with a lifting capacity of 400-500kg, supplied by GGR,for lifting the unitized glazing panels and installing thesteelwork. It was chosen over a monorail system because itcan fit through doors. Weighing 1.5t, the Unic 295 could alsobe transported from floor to floor using site hoists.

The mini crane was used by a range of subcontractors; todate GGR has provided 20 contractors with on-site training.

Petron, a construction company based in Dubai, was hiredto lift an 89t ammonia plant component to a height of 56m.The ammonia plant will operate in the fertiliser sector. Tocomplete the lifts, Petron hired two Liebherrs, a 400t LR1400 crawler and a 500t LTM 1500 mobile from Al Farisequpiment rentals. A 100t tailing crane was also used.

The crane was configured with a ballast wagon as themain crane, and an additional 100t mobile crane withmain boom configuration was used for tailing. The projectwas completed in two days.

Petron says all of its projects are engineered to meetBS, ASME and DIN standards, as Petron is an ISO9001:2008 certified company. The company hasprovided erection services for a range of industries, including aluminum plants, in the Middle East since 1983.

Market report | Middle East

From a certain perspective it seemsthat many Middle Eastern nationsare in a race against time. The

coming year could be crucial in shaping theregion’s medium-term future. Ifgovernments are successful in theirresponses to discontent, then the short, medium and long-term economic futurecontinues to be bright. If not, then as theIMF recently commented, “the unfoldingturmoil in the region poses downside risksto the outlook”.

With the Middle East and North Africaproducing over a third of the world’s oil, should political turmoil seriously impact theregion’s main oil producers, the impact onthe global economy could be huge. Barringsuch calamities, the future of the mainMiddle Eastern economies and the marketfor cranes looks bright. With high oil pricesbolstering their coffers, the leading oilproducers have an opportunity to developinfrastructure and traditional industries aswell as transition to more broadly-basedeconomies, improving the living standardsand skills of their populations — thusaddressing underlying social issues. Themoney is there; in January Saudi Arabia’snet foreign assets reached a record high ofSAR1.67trn ($445bn), up nearly 9% on 2010.But time is the enemy.

Most Middle Eastern economies areacknowledged to have negotiated the 2008financial crisis very well, displaying thatthey had learnt lessons from the 1980s

downturn. After the 2009 recession, significant increases in GDP were recordedthroughout the region (See Table) andforecasts made, prior to the current unrest, described robust medium-term growth.Saudi Arabia’s economy is forecast to growby 3.9% in 2011, but with oil prices at thecurrent level there seems to be significantup-side potential. For the third consecutiveyear the Saudi government has outlined arecord budget, with spending outlined atSAR580bn ($154bn) for 2011. Residentialconstruction is a big issue and has thepotential to lead to an explosion in towerand mobile crane demand that couldoutstrip the Dubai boom. In March, KingAbdullah unveiled benefits for Saudis worth$37bn, $15bn of which is to help his peopleget housing loans and relieve the country’schronic housing shortage. It’s estimatedSaudi Arabia needs 2 million houses to bebuilt by 2014 to keep up with a populationthat has quadrupled over the last 40 years.

Other governments, including Jordanand Yemen, are offering concessions toquell public discontent. Kuwait hasstepped up to the plate with severalmassive housing projects including the36,000 house $6.3bn Khairan Project, the5,000 house $5bn Sabah Al Ahmad FutureCity Project and the 18,000 house $3bnMutlaa Project. These are part of thenation’s 2010-2014 plan involving 100projects valued at $130bn. Similarly, overthe next five years Qatar plans to invest

$150bn in 200 construction projects.While Dubai’s investment in creating a

non-oil based economy may seem to havehit a wall, it appears the Emirate’s economyhas normalised and is poised for a return togrowth. It is estimated that the UAE’s non-oil economy grew by 2.1% in 2010 andseems on track to grow by 3.3% this year. The improvements in the non-oil economyreflect strong tourism, logistics and trade inDubai, and large public investments in AbuDhabi. As the region’s second largesteconomy after Saudi Arabia, the UAE is alsobenefiting from high oil prices and lowinterest rates. Following a contraction in2009, the UAE’s economy bounced back in2010 with growth estimated at 3.2%.

The long-debated need for economic andindustrial diversification, so emphaticallypursued in Dubai, may now be starting totake root on a broader, more sustainablefooting. London-based Bloomberg NewEnergy Finance (BNEF) has concluded thatwithin a couple of decades solar energycould displace oil in the Gulf Region.BNEF’s believes that Saudi Arabia, Kuwaitand the UAE could benefit more fromselling their oil than using it to generatediscounted electricity. If solar really takesoff in the Middle East it could lead to aboom in the sale of small self-erectors,knuckle booms and boom trucks.

‘Green’ energy consumption was up5.3% in MENA in 2010. Abu Dhabi hasconfirmed plans to have 7% of its energy

needs provided by renewables by 2020.Arabian Construction Company (ACC) wasrecently awarded a $204m contract for workon Abu Dhabi’s carbon-neutral Masdar Cityproject. Meanwhile, Hashim Bin AbdullahYamani, president of King Abdullah City forAtomic and Renewable Energy (KA-CARE)recently stated that, “Saudi Arabia hasdecided to make use of alternative energyresources such as atomic energy, solarenergy, geothermal energy and windenergy”.

Near-term, Saudi Arabia’s power needsare forecast to rise at a rate of 8% perannum, and triple over the next 15-20 yearsfrom today’s annual usage of 40 gigawatts.Region-wide, Siemens, ABB Ltd andAlstrom are pursuing opportunities asgovernments add infrastructure.

The oil and gas sector is not beingoverlooked. In 2009 the world’s largest oilcompany, Saudi Aramco, completed workon its largest ever capital programme, worth $100bn . Now Aramco andpetrochemical producer Saudi BasicIndustries Corp (Sabic) plan to invest afurther $100bn in hydrocarbon projects bythe end of 2015. Aramco – which is alsoone of the region’s largest crane ownerswith over 300 mobile crane of which morethan 250 are Groves - has confirmed plansto spend $70.1bn on oil-related assetsincluding $19.8bn to develop new sourcesof crude and keep output at current levels.Jointly, Aramco and Sabic will invest$50.3bn to expand refining capacity anddevelop petrochemical projects.

All of this investment means crane work. But naturally building power plants, sub-stations, oil and petrochemical facilities, apartment blocks, etc also generates

massive spending on civil engineering ontransportation infrastructure, utilities andpublic works. And in both rail and portdevelopment, the investments are huge. Todate, announced railway projects arevalued at $106.2bn.

At the end of March Abu Dhabi PortsCo. (ADPC) awarded its third major cranecontract for Khalifa Port, planned to be oneof the largest in the world. The latest cranecontract, worth AED193m ($52.4m), wasawarded to China’s ZPMC for six SuperPost Panamax ship-to-shore cranes. Thisfollows recent contracts awarded since lastNovember to Terex for 20 Terex-Noell SC624E diesel-electric one-over-one straddlecarriers valued at AED84m ($22.9m) and toKonecranes for 30 automated stackingcranes valued at AED430m ($117m).

As has been the case for some fortyyears, Turkish contractors remain a majorforce in the Middle East. The ability ofthese contractors to compete with theirinternational rivals depends not just onprice, but quality and on-time completions. In the more inhospitable regions, sophisticated product support remains achallenge for all equipment suppliers andfor many Turkish international contractorshave come to rely upon Terex’s Turkishdistributor DAS Otomotive.

DAS has established strong relationshipswith leading contractors such as ENKA,Gama and Tekfen that have a significantfootprint through the Middle East, CentralAsia and Eastern Europe. DAS have over adozen service technicians provides localsupport to its customers even in veryremote regions where support is normallypoor-to-nonexistant. Managing DirectorKerim Basakinci says that under its “CARE”

Scheme, DAS is providing free-of-chargeinspection of cranes at its customer’sjobsites from Azerbaijan to Morocco. “Werecently sold a fleet of Terex cranes to theheavy crane division of SOCAR (the StateOil Company of Azerbaijan) for use byTefken. They purchased three Terex-Bendini 60t A600s RTs, a 30t RC 30 RT, a160t AC 160 and 250t AC 250 all terrain andfive Terex-Comedil Towers. This year weexpect to sell over 100 new cranes, and wehave already passed 50% of our target inthe first quarter.”

With the recent downturn impacting thedomestic workload of contractors andequipment manufacturers in NorthAmerica, Europe and Japan, the world hasrushed to the emerging markets, causingeven-more intense price competition.Middle East crane demand has yet torecover to anything approaching pre-recession demand. While the tumble indemand in 2009 impacted all suppliers, numerically it was the Chinese supplierswho took the biggest hit with sales of theirsmall, low-cost truck cranes and small-to-mid size crawler cranes dippingdramatically. In 2008 the only strong-sellingnon-Chinese truck crane was the highly-popular 55t Tadano GT 550EX whichaccounted for approximately 50% of all non-Chinese truck crane sales of all sizes. Ofthe Chinese suppliers, XCMG was trulydominant in the truck crane field with over70% of exports, followed by Zoomlion witha share of almost 25%. In the crawler cranearena Sany was China’s top exporter withsome 36% of exports followed by FUWAwith 32%.

Looking at the 2010 statistics, it’spredictable that the sales of new cranes inthese mainstream categories would beremain weak, given the large fleet ofcranes lying idle in most regional markets.Of course tower crane sales have beenespecially hard hit with utilization rates inmany markets, especially Dubai, now verylow. Last year less than 500 new towercranes were exported directly to theMiddle East by European manufacturers -with all but a handful of these being top-slewers.

Utilization is improving but has someway to go. Of course this is not such aproblem for larger-sized mobile craneswhere the local population is quite small.

Certainly sales of second-hand cranes arefilling some of the demand but many of theleading regional crane rental companiesprefer to offer their customers the qualityand assurance of new cranes.

A recent example was Liebherr’s sale ofthe first 1,200t capacity LTM 11200-9.1 inSaudi Arabia to Arabian ConsolidatedTrading based in Jubail. Meanwhile Saudi’sAwad Bin Quraya recently ordered nineLiebherr All Terrains of between 50 and500t capacity for delievery between Apriland December this year. Bin Quraya nowhas a fleet of some 220 mobile cranes thatincludes large numbers of 50t Tadano truckcranes and rough terrains, Hitachi crawlercranes, Liebherr and Grove all terrains.

Al-Messallam of Riyadh recently ordereda 450t GMK 7450 as well as two of the newlong-boom GMK 6300L 300t ATs. SimilarlyOman-based heavy-lift specialist SinanHeavy Lift Lift selected the GMK 7450 tojoin an existing fleet including two 300tGMK 6300s, two 220t GMK 5220s, a 100tGMK 4100L and several RTs topping outwith the 120t RT 9130E. All these unitswere sold and are supported by local Grovedistributor, Arabian Crane Services who hashad some success with National trucks.

For many years now the rough terraincranes of Terex’s former Bendini arm havesold very well throughout the Middle East, not least by Turkey’s DAS Otomotive. Thenew 90t (100USt) RT 100 has already won

success in Kuwait along with a fleet of 60tTerex A 600s.

Cargotec’s Hiab introduced its model310L built for the Saudi and Qatar marketsto deliver bricks to 4- and 5-storeyapartment buildings. Last year Hiab wasalso successful in winning an order for 95loaders and cargo-bodies for the Ministry ofElectricity, Iraq.

Similarly innovative has been Manitex’approach to this market. Thanks to AbuDhabi-based Darwish Bin Ahmed & SonsGroup, who represent Manitex throughoutthe UAE and Saudi, Manitex has achieved alevel of success with boom trucks neverbefore accomplished in the Middle East.MAN distributor Darwish worked withManitex to engineer the mounting of thecranes to allow it to furnish full productsupport for the entire boom truck. The40USt (36t) Manitex model 40100, 30USt30100C and specialized 28USt Model 2892Wireline model are all mounted on 6x6wheel drive MAN trucks with super singleon-off-road tyres. Darwish has validatedthe suitability of the concept withpurchases of almost 60 units of six differentmodels between December 2008 and theend of 2010.

Another niche that is being exploited byUnic distributor GGR is the growingdemand for minicrawlers. In 2009 GGRestablished a joint-venture, GGR Gulf, inpartnership with Orientals Specialist

Lifting, which has branches in the UAE,Jordan and Saudi. To date the companyhas retailed five units in Dubai including atop-of-the line model 705 offering 6.0tcapacity at 3m and a maximum boomlength of 19.2m. The company’s rental fleethas proven a real success with ten unitsnow available and only one of thesecurrently off-rent. By far the most popularmodel is the Unic 295 offering 2.9t capacity@ 1.4m radius and boom lengths up to8.65m. While most of the Unics have beenemployed on high-rise glass handlingapplications, the range of applications isgradually expanding as the potential ofthese small cranes becomes appreciated.

While the upper end of the scale maynot be strong, opportunities are opening up.Kobelco’s Mike Maruo sees the Middle Eastcrawler crane market improving by about10% this year and with real recoverystarting at the end of 2011 or early in 2012.Enquiry levels especially from Saudi andAbu Dhabi have picked up but the pace isstill slow. Maruo expects Middle Easternconstruction of new industrial plants topeak in 2013-14, providing the next majordriver to crawler sales.

Following the sale of a 750t capacity LR1750 crawler crane to the Bahrain-basedSarens-Naas joint venture, at the end of lastyear a 350t LR 1350 joined the fleet ofAmman, Jordan-based Abdullah Al JiburiGeneral Contracting Co for use on the BasraSports Complex project in Iraq. And whileAl-Jaber’s 3,200t capacity Terex CC 8800-1TWIN currently remains the largest craneowned by a local company, it will soon bejoined in the Emirates by ALE’s 4,300tcapacity SK.190 crane. ALE recently addeda 1,600t CC 8800-1 to bridge the gapbetween its Gottwald MK 1500 and SK.190,of which a second unit is now in build. TheUK-based company’s executive directorRichard Peckoversays that when the SK190completes its current assignment inHouston, TX it will head to the UAE. Itsfirst job will be to lift two 1,450t, 70m long,10m diameter pieces and it will then moveto a longer-term project working with ALE’spurpose-built ALE 300 barge that willtransport pieces for the SK.190 to lift.

Clearly the future of the Middle East as acrane market offers fabulous potential forcranes large and small. Let us hope thatthe politicians don’t de-rail it. !

A l Zahlawi came into the businessof selling tower cranes fromworking as a technician. He

says, “I’ve worked in tower cranes since1974, and formed NFT in 1980. I workedon the technical side first, erecting andtroubleshooting for Potain. In 1979, Imoved into sales and marketing. NFT wasbased in Saudi Arabia for 15 years, until1995. That year, I decided to expand thebusiness and move to the Emirates, inorder to cover more countries. We’ve beenthe main dealer for Potain in the Gulf for25 years; we deal only with Potain.

“We’re a specialist company offeringturnkey jobs, cranes with operators. Weoffer a choice of rental or sale andbuyback. We also offer reconditioning ofcustomers’ secondhand cranes.”

Today, NFT Cranes is widely recognisedas one of the world’s leading tower cranecompanies. It claims to be the world’sbiggest tower crane supplier and rental

company, in terms of tower crane capacity.NFT considers its team to be field experts, with experience of top prestigious projects. It says it offers a wide range of productsincluding the world’s smallest to largestManitowoc Potain tower cranes and theworld’s fastest PEGA Hoist, with a speed of120m/min and capacity of 3.2t. With thirtyyears of experience, it has a growing assetbase of 650 Manitowoc Potain tower cranesin the GCC, with 300 more around theworld, and 200 hoists from GJJ/Orbit andPega. With branches around the world, itsays it is growing with unrivalledmomentum.

For a few years, business in Dubai wasas good as anyone could wish for. AlZahlawi says, “During the boom, wecaught an opportunity to sell and rent.We were importing from 500–600 cranes ayear. We caught a lot of the best and mostprestigious jobs in the area.

“Today, people are asking, ‘What else

is there to be built in Dubai?’ So, we haveto look to other markets.

“We want to aim for about 20–30%growth per year, based on our expansionin overseas markets. In Dubai, weexpanded three times over in three years. But then, we suffered for some time fromthe drop in business. We don’t want torisk that again. We had to move cranesfrom the Emirates to Saudi Arabia andelsewhere. We had two big projects inRiyadh, which helped us survive: thePrincess Nora bint AbdulrahmanUniversity, which took 150 cranes, and theKing Abdullah Financial District, whichtook 100 cranes.”

As well as looking back to NFT’s originsin Saudi Arabia, Al Zahlawi is lookingfurther afield. He says, “Recently, we’vemoved into working in the Far East, inmarkets like Singapore and Hong Kong. We’re also working in Central Asia, incountries like Azerbaijan, and have a base

Abu Dhabi’s Manitowoc Potain dealer NFT Cranes has responded to Dubai’s construction crisis byentering new markets and end user sectors. Will North spoke to managing director Nabil Al Zahlawi

in Ethiopia, from where we are alsodelivering cranes to other African countries.

“In Azerbaijan, we’re supplyingpassenger hoists for a residential project, and then tower cranes for some otherprojects. The business model of Dubaihas moved to Azerbaijan, mainly aroundBaku. We can take our experience hereand use it in other places like that.

“Iran is a promising market for us.We’re also in the Far East and Africa, which is new for us. We’ve been workingthere for a year now. We’re renting about40-50 new cranes in Singapore.”

Al Zahlawi is also expanding hisbusiness into new end user sectors, bothlarge and small. On the large end, he isfocussing on energy-related jobs, usingsome of Potain’s biggest cranes. He says,“This year, we have started to put cranesin the oil and gas sector. We have about25 cranes on a project in Abu Dhabi. It’s anew sector for tower cranes. They’rebeing used for erection and mechanicalwork.

“We offered a tower with 70m radiusand 3t at the jib end. That’s comparableto a 250t mobile crane. The crane’s newvariable frequency drive gives inchprecision for placing loads.

“We have three Manitowoc specialapplication MD1100 tower cranesavailable, and may go up to six to eightunits in future. These can lift 7t at 90m

radius. The MD1100’s normal maximumlift is 40t, but it can go higher, to 50t.

“There are three nuclear power plantscoming up in Abu Dhabi. These craneswill go for jobs likes this.”

Tower cranes, Al Zahlawi believes, cancompete with mobiles in the Gulf as wellat the low capacity end of the market as atthe high end. He explains, “ We’ve found

a few jobs for self-erectors. They’re small, quick, fast, cranes. They’re good forbuilding projects taking two or threemonths. They were previously unknownto this market. We’ve got eight unitscoming. You can erect them in a fewminutes, so they are good for smallhousing projects and villas, where theycan replace a mobile crane.”

Despite this inventiveness, there is stilla glut of standard tower cranes in themarket. One of Al Zahlawi’s latestadditions to NFT’s services might be ableto help customers with that. He explains,“We have a trade-in centre now; we cantake in any used tower crane, and offer aPotain in return. There are a lot ofsecondhand cranes in the Gulf now thatare getting old. In future, people herewon’t invest in buying tower cranes, butwill chose rental.

“The experiences here recently, havetaught people not to invest for the longterm. It is a nightmare to leave cranes onthe ground. This is why we took theopportunity to move cranes out of thecountry. At the moment, we are movingmore than 40 cranes around the world. The idea is to reduce our crane fleet byabout 50%, and get more brand newcranes for rental.” !

based service engineering company thatworked with utility firms and electricalgoods manufacturers. While its officialmoniker has shortened, the company itselfhas grown into a global operation focusedon the transportation and lifting ofextraordinary loads.

For decades the transportation andheavy lifting specialist has had a strongpresence across diverse industries frompower generation and mining toshipbuilding.

Most notably though, the companyregards itself as a world-leadingcontractor in the offshore petroleumsector, as it routinely handles thetransportation and load-out of oil and gasplatforms prior to offshore rig assembly.

And it is in this most promising sectorfor the lifting equipment industry thatALE intends to forge ahead of itscompetitors with its new Mega Jacksystem for lifting oil and gas platformmodules weighing several tens ofthousands of tonnes.

ALE engineers first gave the ideaserious thought around six years ago asthey realised that developments in thepetroleum industry would necessitatebigger and bigger rigs.

Executive director for ALE in theNetherlands, Kees Kompier, explains: “Inthe early days the installation work wasdone by cranes. We were seeing a long-term need for increasingly bigger decks, but offshore lifting vessels are not capable

of lifting and installing these biggermodules; you have to do it by means of afloat-over, which always involves a jack-upoperation. We didn’t feel any of thejacking systems currently available wouldbe able to meet the changingrequirements of the market as modulesget bigger and bigger.”

Back in 2005 the size of investmentneeded to tap into deposits of petroleumlocated deep beneath the ocean floormade deepwater drilling operationscommercially pointless.

However the inexorable rise in oilprices due to scarcity, exacerbated by thefinancial crisis, meant that petroleum’scommodity value was always destined tooutweigh the investment cost ofdeepwater drilling.

For ALE this meant that investment in

a 5,000t jacking unit, more powerful thananything currently on the market, was theonly way to go to support current rigassembly techniques for topsides.

Kompier continues: “From that pointour basic idea was to develop a 20,000tcapacity jacking system, which consists offour towers of 5,000t each, that had a safeoperational jacking height of 40m.”

ALE’s design for the Mega Jack is fairlysimplistic. The system uses a minimum offour jacking bases, each one containingfour 1,300t capacity hydraulic jacks with1.25mm stroke lengths.

Above these are two starter beams, which are eventually jacked up to allowplacement of the jacking beams below.

Initially these starter beams lie witheach end inserted through temporarysupports, which hold the load during

Big, bigger, biggestAs the world’s petroleumreserves dwindle, oil and gasplatform operators need largerrigs to work further offshoreand drill deeper. ALE gaveKevin Walsh a sneak peek at itsnew Mega Jack system, whichwill help assemble these rigs.

insertion of each jacking beam, which aresituated on top of each hydraulic jack.

When the starter beams are raised andheld above the temporary supports by thehydraulic jacks, the supports, which areopen on two parallel vertical sides, rotateon a turntable so that the closed sides lieat a right angle to the starter beams andthereby support the load.

At this point the hydraulic jacks areretracted to allow the insertion of twojacking beams through the open side ofthe supports, via two of four separatefeed-in systems attached to the base.

As with the starter beams thesejacking beams are jacked up, and thesupports rotate to hold the load whilealigning their open sides with the othertwo feed-in systems.

In this manner a freestanding four-sided tower is formed at each cornerbelow the load until it reaches therequired height.

Initially, this target height was 40m fora 20,000t load, but after consultation withits client base in the offshore petroleumsector, ALE realised they could take theMega Jack further.

“After we started marketing it to ourclients they came back to us and we had achat about the possibilities,” explainsKompier. “They said to us ‘it’s nice tohave this 5,000t capacity, but on the

bigger decks we would like to havecapacity of 30,000t or 40,000t or 50,000t.Can you support us?’ so we started to lookat our system and develop it further.”

“Now it’s actually a combination ofthree types of tower, the 5,000t tower, the10,000t tower and a 15,000t tower.”

Each of these higher capacity towersessentially consists of two or more 5,000tbase units combined.

This modular system design provides agreat deal of flexibility when tailoring thejacking system to the particular load being

raised, as different combinations of towerscan be used. For instance a platform deckwith an uneven centre of gravity mayrequire two 5,000t jacking towers and two10,000t towers to account for this.

This also adds to the system’s ease oftransportation, as the Mega Jack can bedisassembled and containerised for world-wide transport.

“In Korea they are constructing decksnow up to 35,000t and 40,000t,” saysKompier. “China is busy developing thosekinds of decks also, so there’s several

places where they are being built now. Ifyou give the engineers the possibility tobuild bigger they’re going do it.”

Another development to come out ofALE’s conversations with its clients wasthe need to engineer flexibility into thesize of the tower, for jobs where a minimaltower footprint is required.

The standard base section dimensionsare 5m x 5m, but similar lifting capacitiescan be achieved with the Mega Jack using2.5m long jacking beams, cutting thefootprint of a jacking base down to aquarter of its standard size.

At this point ALE says the Mega Jackis capable of lifting 40,000t weights safelyto a height of 25m, but they are workingon lifting large topsides as high as 50m.

With such enormous stresses on thejacking system, one of the most difficultchallenges in the system’s developmenthas been minimising risk during operationwhen strong winds pick up during lifting.

Kompier says the fundamental designof the system confers exceptional stabilityon the system, which can allow it towithstand extremely high additionalloadings, even mid-jacking.

“That is the great thing about thesystem,” comments Kompier. “Due to thehuge stability it has, the safety of thewhole operation is so great that ifsomething happens, like wind gustsstarting up and we have huge wind loads,we may have to stop, but it’s just a matterof waiting, the stability is still there.”

The temporary supports are capable ofholding the entire load, plus wind loadingsfor extended periods of time if necessary.

And judging by one theoretical casestudy Kompier refers to where a 38,000tload is lifted 35m by the Mega Jack, thesystem could easily withstand additionalwind loadings of 50m/s at that height.

All of this data during each jackingoperation will be collected by a speciallydesigned control room on the Mega Jack, which will automatically monitor andprovide precision control for everymovement of the process.

With all data collected in the controlroom, its computer system will performsimulations using information about thecurrent deck height, wind speed, groundsettlement, and whether the tower isbeing erected 100% vertically todetermine safe parameters for working.

Although a working version of theMega Jack system has yet to beconstructed, following the input fromvarious client companies, ALE is veryconfident that the system will have asignificant impact on the market.

ALE Executive director RonaldHoefmans, who has also worked on theMega Jack’s design said: “We expect agood market for it and we are confident inthat market. We’re in contact with a lot ofclients who are very happy with this newsystem because they can now build bigmodules and topsides and know there’s asystem that can pick them up.”

“With this system in place we can dothe whole project for our clientele. Theonly thing that was missing was the jackup system, so now they can have only onesubcontractor to talk to who can givethem the whole package of pulling theload-out, skidding the load-out andballasting during the load-out and float-over operations.”

ALE is currently assembling the firstMega Jack system and plans to finishtesting in May. The initial Mega Jack willbe a four-tower system that should beready for commercial use by December.

But this does not mean that ALE hasfinished tinkering with its new product.

While experimenting with differenttower combinations, pushing for greaterjacking heights, and attempting to lifteven greater loads, ALE is also planningto add skidding beams to the system.

ALE believes the particularly highstability of the system lends itself to theintegration of skidding beams into thejacking system to provide the option ofskidding raised modules into place.

According to Kompier, such futuredevelopments could see the Mega Jack’suse widen from offshore platformassembly to many other applications.

“I can see it jacking up bridges prior tofloating, that could be an option. We’relooking at ship conversions, smallshipyards. For the moment offshore is themain focus, but in the longer term, younever know in our business.”!

GTP has been operating inGeorgetown, capital of Guyana, since the Guyana-Norway forest

protection agreement, a UN-led initiative, established a system for auditing andreporting on sustainable forestry inGuyana. If Guyana fails to demonstratesustainable harvesting to externalauditors, it can face sanctions.

GTP delivers the mats to a distributiondepot in Ootmarsum, Netherlands. Thecompany also ships mats outside ofEurope to Asia, America and Australia.

Local timber companies, such asGuyana Mats and Timbers (GMT), harvestthe wood and prepare beams, which GTPthen makes into products and sells.Companies receive logistical assistancefrom GTP through the use of trucks andinvestment in equipment.

GTP’s goal has been to create aprocessing plant for wood products, but itsprogress has been hindered by thenecessity of permits. Constructing the planthas taken three years.

Dutch shareholders at GTP havedecided to focus on producing high qualitytimber mats, in part because of theproximity of the distribution plant toDutch crane manufacturers.

Mats are created firstthrough sorting the woodinto standard, premium andexcellent versions, whichrelates to the closeness ofthe grain and the durabilityof the wood. Then the matstructure is composed, witha minimum of wastage, fromthe chamfered logs. Theyare held together with largesteel bolts and thickwashers. The finished mats are about 5 by12m each.

GTP aims to increase the sustainabilityof Guyana’s timber industry and meetinternational Forest Stewardship Council(FSC) standards, expanding the market forits sustainable timber mats.

Timber mats are generally used underthe tracks of crawler cranes or outriggerpads to distribute the weight and keepcranes stable on soft ground, however theuse of wood outrigger mats for largecranes is diminishing.

GTP hopes to reintroduce the timbermat for this application, noting thatcompanies can benefit from the timbermat’s elasticity, cost effectiveness andlighter weight compared to steel

fabricated mats. It suggests using timbermats for dockside wharf protection, offshore protection for barges, platformsand temporary roads. !

Outrigger mats go greenSince 2002, crane andoutrigger mats made of tropicalhardwoods, such as Azobe,Cumaru Dabema, Greenheart,Mora and Wamara, have beensustainably produced inGuyana by Guyana TimberProducts (GTP), a salesorganisation run by Dutchshareholders. It sells timberproducts that come fromsustainably managed forests.Cristina Brooks reports.

Crane mats are used to provide machine access and stability inareas with difficult ground conditions. They also help to spreadaxle weight pressures evenly across the ground. Cranes Todaytakes a look at a selection of environmentally-friendly crane mats.

Marwood Group

Beasley Forest Products

Marwood are a UK rental firm specialisingin the hire of non-mechanical plant hire. They also stock a number of niche itemsand crane accessories, including light andheavy-duty application crane mats.

Marwood Group crane mats are suitablefor use with both rubber-tyred and trackedvehicles, capable of supporting weights ofseveral hundred tonnes, dependent on theground conditions on site.

However Marwood do advise that anyareas for which the mats are intended foruse should be graded, with any ruts filledto allow as much ground contact with theunderside of the mat as possible.

However timber used in Marwood matsis not graded, meaning that stresscalculations cannot be provided.

Also the weights listed on the

Marwood website must only be used as aguideline, as varying timber densities canalter the wood’s level of water absorption, and hence the weight.

Smaller heavy-duty mats, withdimensions measuring 6m x 1m x 200mmweigh approximately 1.5t, with the larger6m x 1m x 300mm mats weighing 1.9t.

When less severe crane support isneeded, i.e. for cranes weighing no morethan 60t, Marwood’s light-duty crane matsshould suffice.

When used in the same manner as theheavy-duty mats (on graded areas withruts filled in) these mats cover an area5,000mm x 1,000mm x 150mm and willonly be effective with plant where theweight is evenly distributed throughoutthe carrier.

US firm Beasley forest productsmanufacture 12” x 12” crane mats at therespectable rate of 500 crane mats a day.

The firm uses either mixed hardwoodsor solid oak for all of its crane mats, andBeasley products suffer from very lowwood wane. However if wood wane is arequirement of the design, Beasley ForestProducts are capable of tailoring theirofferings to suit.

Mats can be fabricated up to 5m inwidth, although 4m is the standard size.

Crane mat lengths are availableanywhere between 8ft and 24ft.

Beasley also uses customised 1.25”bolts inscribed with the company nameand logo to hold the mats together, withthe nuts and washers countersunk intoeach mat.

The ends of the mats are protectedfrom splitting using a chemical protectivesealant for extended mat longevity.

As with with other timber crane matsBeasley products are also reusable andenvironmentally friendly.

Mississippi-based DixieMat hasmanufactured crane mat products for 35years, and has in that time become thelargest US provider of heavy-duty cranemats.

DixieMat crane mats are made solelyfrom dense Mississippi mixed hardwoodsfor enhanced durability, and featurechemically coated edges to provideprotection against decomposition.

According to the manufacturer, theenhanced durability of Dixie crane matsmeans that they can be reused severaltimes, making them more cost-effective.

Each mat is constructed from a seriesof four 8” to 12” thick timbers that are 4ftwide and can vary in length from 16ft to40ft long, dependent on function andtransportability issues.

They also feature notched lifting eyes

for ease of handling, with cable loopsavailable as an option if required.

All crane mats are constructed usingprecision machine drilling and notchedrods for added security and safety, aswell as to ensure compliance withstandards.

THE BACK PAGE

82 CRANES TODAY | www.cranestodaymagazine.com April 2011

Nordic Crane Group was set up exactlythree years ago. The Stangeland andKynningsrud families came together to formthis holding company on a 50:50 ownershipbasis for both families, and the names of thecompanies in the group have all changed toreflect this.

It is approximately 700km betweenwhere these two families are based,Stangeland from Stavanger on the Westcoast and Kynningsrud from Halden on theeastern border. Since the families joined,we cover the south coast of Sweden, fromMalmo up to Gothenburg, and the wholecoastline of Norway. We have over 30locations in Norway and Sweden, but wewill work anywhere in Scandinavia ourcustomers want us to go.

The Norwegian oil market is mainly based from Stavanger all the way up the coast tothe very north, and the Stangeland site was already in that market. Both families werelooking to grow and needed more equipment to handle demand from the oil industry, both in Norway and Sweden. This also allowed us to bid for bigger jobs.

We work all across the construction industry, oil and gas sectors predominantly, butthere’s nothing that we won’t do. We have our own engineering company, Nordic CraneEngineering, we have Nordic Crane installation in Sweden. We also have the companyNordic Crane Wind, based 150km south of Gothenburg in Sweden, which has two of ourlargest cranes, two 750t Liebherr LTM 1750s.

We have two 600t Demag CC 2800s and 4 500t mobile cranes, a mixture of Liebherrsand Demags, in Nordic Crane Wind, with a few more 500 tonners elsewhere in the group.

Wind power projects are not as numerous in Norway yet as they are in Sweden; therewe do quite a lot of work involving wind power.

In total, following the recent merger with TO Bull, we have approximately 500vehicles, 350 cranes ranging from 750t to 30t, 50 lorry loaders and the rest are splitbetween heavy transports and ordinary transports.

Most of our cranes are German made, so we have mainly Liebherr, Demag, Faun orGrove cranes. We also have six or seven Sennebogens for loading and unloading. Wehave several crawler cranes, eight of which were purchased last year as part of a merger, plus two LTR 1100s we gained from the acquisition of TO Bull. There are two DemagCC2800s, the LR 1300 300t crawler, a 280t crawler, and six 100t telescopic crawlers.

The whole company is just three years old, so we have done a lot in that time. Whenyou have just bought a company the big job is to get synergy out of the whole group.

2010 was difficult, partially because the crane lorries have taken the marketcompletely up to 80t mobile crane capacity class. So forthe overall construction market it’s narrower, from 80t to200t, that’s the range of cranes that they need mostly.

On the investment side, of course we see what isnecessary, but now we are bigger we can movemachines between companies in the group to where theyare needed and get maximum synergy. That is what weare working on now.

In our fleet Norway

Nordic Crane Group

World’s biggestblock

The world’s largest rope block for a land-based crane has been completed and willbe tested in the coming month, accordingto its manufacturer, the Dutch firmRopeBlock. The 108t rope block wascreated for the Sarens megalifting SGC-120 ringer crane.

Moving into the market for bigmodular lifts, the 120,000tm SGC-120 canuse its six winches, twin booms andspecially designed ropeblock to lift amaximum of 3,200t. It can lift 600t at aradius of 100m.

Despite the size of the crane itscomponents, rope block included, can betransported in standard 20ft and 40 ftshipping containers.

RopeBlock said the engineering of theblock was ‘extensive’. When the designand components were finally ready, theblock was assembled outside RopeBlock’splant in Oldenzaal.

The hook has five sheaves on each ofits six housings. The housings fit a totalof 30 falls of wire ropes with a diameter of50mm each. The modular block may beconfigured for various capacities over1,200t following removal of two sheavehousings in the middle of the block. Itcan lift using a general hook or twodouble hooks in cast steel.

Sarens has commenced the reevingand load testing on delivery of the block, using the hook to lift 625t at a 120mradius on the full main boom.
