annual report 2019-2020

Dear Friends,

We can all say that the 2019-2020 program year was one-of-a-kind! From in-person artist in residence programs and community art classes to virtual camps, Arts4All Florida’s staff continued our 39-year tradition of excellence in providing accessible arts programming for people with disabilities. A variety of completely new as well as adapted virtual programs debuted and, not wanting technology to be a barrier, we even loaned iPads to students who didn’t have access to one for our summer camps.

We hope you enjoy this year’s look back at everything Arts4All Florida accomplished and thank each of you for your support!

Best,

art =communicating in new ways

“I absolutely loved this collaboration. The students were cooperative and learned how to listen to us better as well as how to listen to each other. They were able to communicate in a new and effective way. Our students learned that we have to accept each other the way that we are. They learned calming techniques that we still use in the class. They learned how to follow directions. They learned how to hear and be heard. They learned how to communicate with each other.

We have one student who is nonverbal and is on the participatory level and our teaching artist got him to respond during her sessions. His behavior is so much better in class and it is in part to many of the techniques Ms. Paloma employed during her sessions that I continue using.” - Classroom Teacher

art = trying new things

“A. was reluctant to work with clay because the tactile sensation put him off. He started with gloves and by the end was squishing it between his ungloved fingers and created a messy masterpiece.” - Teaching artist

and expressing yourself in new ways

93 %of teachers felt the residency art lessons helped most or almost all students express themselves in new ways.

“My students are considered nonverbal, but watching them use their voices and dance moves to express themselves was an amazing experience. One that stood out is having a student who came out of her shell (only when Mr. Rick was here) and was trying to communicate more and more.” - Classroom Teacher

art = adapting to the changing times

When COVID-19 hit, our staff jumped into gear, switching many of our programs to remote instruction through at-home art lesson plans sent to parents; pre-recorded videos; and virtual classes, camps, and trainings.

Six new “Spotlight on Art” programs highlighted our many incredible Teaching Artists from across the state. These 10-15 minute demonstrations were designed to inspire young artists to keep learning and participating in the arts while at home.

Arts4All Florida got 87 participants up and moving by teaming up with Chance 2 Dance and Associate Professor Andrew Carroll from the University of South Florida’s School of Theatre and Dance to provide free virtual dance classes.

The pilot “Animation and More: Essentials for Work” program got off to a great in-person start and switched to virtual halfway through the program. Ten students seamlessly used video conferencing to learn the industry-standard Maya software to create advanced animations.

Our very popular “Animation Gets Real” summer camp also went virtual, with 90 teens and young adults, ages 13-22 with Autism and related disabilities, exploring the world of animation, filmmaking, and music technology in a virtual classroom.

“Even though it was via Zoom due to the circumstances of the virus, they kept it very engaging and exciting. I really liked during the end of week presentation/ceremony they talked about college programs and schools that have what they have been working on this week and encouraging them that they can make this a career and they can do anything.” - Camp Parent

art = connecting to the community

962children and adults with and without disabilities participated in 523 community art classes and camps during 36 different programs.

“I cry happy tears to see how each teacher worked with each student on their individual level. All the staff was so professional and patient. I loved the experience for my son. Keep doing what you’re doing. You all are amazing!!! - Camp Parent

“One student that I've had the entire year was constantly disengaged in the class. He would often get violent with the aides and would completely shut down when it came time to move. By our third session this spring we had an enormous breakthrough! During our relationships concept, we worked in pairs and I partnered with him one-on-one. During this time he made eye contact, used his hands for helping not hitting, and even was laughing by the end of the class. He continued to improve in our last two sessions together which was such a joy to witness as he came out of his shell.” - Teaching Artist

In February, Arts4All Florida hosted the “Larry Mitchell Interchange: Music for All,” which featured a week of

music clinics at Tallahassee high schools and Florida State University’s College of Music for 25 students of all abilities as well as a concert at Florida State University.

“Having the opportunity to work with Larry Mitchell was an incredible experience. I learned so much during the workshop series, and his advice has been incredibly helpful when I am working with my band. It was also a fantastic opportunity to meet many other musicians of all abilities.” - Workshop Participant

Six very talented teens were selected as our 2020 Florida Young Performers winners. This competition seeks to identify talented artists with a disability, ages 14-26, to encourage and support the likelihood for a successful career in the arts. Two students in each category were selected from a pool of applicants through a strict adjudication process facilitated by experts in music, dance, and theatre.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts, Arts4All Florida continued to provide opportunities for 85 artists of all abilities and at all stages of their career to exhibit their artwork through six exhibitions. An estimated 22,000 people viewed the shows at the 22nd Floor Gallery at the Florida Capitol, Creative Pinellas, Florida State Fair, Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, Kotler Gallery, and Tallahassee Museum.

Arts4All Florida also continued our partnership with Regions Bank, creating our 2020 artist calendar. Twenty-nine adult artists with disabilities submitted 43 pieces to the contest and 13 pieces were selected for the calendar. Not only did these artists get exposure through Arts4All Florida, but three markets of Regions Bank also distributed the calendar to their customers.

“Isn’t it great when a piece of art reaches out and grabs our attention? 95% of training participants reported in the end of year evaluation that the training helped them plan accessible and/or inclusive lessons and 94% felt the tips and techniques learned in the training increased student engagement.

“I enjoyed everything about this webinar, the speaker Lee used excellent examples, offered professional advice and tips on the correct way to handle situations that arise, talked about what products might trigger a traumatized student, communicated how to effectively and compassionately address a situation, and who to connect with at the facility when doing so. This was a great, great webinar. Thank you for sharing this with us!”
