Creating and Uploading Videos to a YouTube Channel If you have created videos for your students and classes, you may wish to share them via YouTube. By using YouTube instead of SCC’s Media Server, you will simply copy and paste the link to your video in your Blackboard course (or send your students the link via email), which will send students directly to the YouTube site where they will be able to view your video. This reduces the number of complaints you might receive from students not being able to view videos within Blackboard.
Note: YouTube is free, and you should use your SCC Gmail account to sign up for your YouTube account. Please do not use your personal Gmail or YouTube account to post videos for your SCC courses.
In this tutorial, you will learn how to: • Create a YouTube Channel using your SCC Gmail account
• Upload a video to your SCC YouTube account • Apply restrictions to uploaded videos in your YouTube Channel
I. Creating a YouTube Channel using your SCC Gmail account
1. Begin by logging into MySCC and accessing your Gmail account. 2. Click on the grid of 9 squares in the upper right corner, near your name.
3. On the box that opens, locate and click on “More.”
4. Select “YouTube.”
5. On the resulting page, click on “Sign in” in the upper right corner.
6. You should now receive confirmation that your registration has been accepted. (Otherwise, you may need to log in again to register.)
7. On the left side of the screen, click “My Channel.”
8. The resulting screen will ask you to set up your channel on YouTube. Enter your gender and birthday, then click “Continue.”
9. You will now see the home screen for your YouTube Channel. You may add a channel description by clicking on “Describe your Channel.”
II. Uploading a video to your SCC YouTube account
1. In your YouTube account (accessed from your SCC Gmail by clicking on the icon of 9 squares and selecting “More,” then “YouTube”), select “My Channel” from the right hand menu.
2. Click “Videos.”
3. Click on “Upload.”
4. On the resulting screen, click on the word “Public” to access the drop-‐down menu.
5. If you are planning to share your video with your class, you should choose “Unlisted.” If you plan to share the video with only one or two individuals, you should choose “Private,” and enter in the SCC email addresses of those with whom you wish to share the video. For the
purposes of this tutorial, we will proceed as though you are sharing this video with your entire class.
6. Now, click on “Select files to upload.” Select the file from your computer to upload and click “Open,” or “Upload” (whichever your computer prompts you to do).
7. YouTube will begin the upload. When the video is done processing, click “Done.”
8. The resulting screen will give you a link you can use to share your video. Copy and paste this link into your Blackboard course or into an email message to whomever you wish to view the video.
9. For help with putting the link into your course, please see our tutorial on adding a link to your course: http://pages.southwesterncc.edu/a_sartain/Adding%20a%20URL%20to%20a%20Content%20Area%20Bb%20Tutorial.pdf
III. WE SUGGEST applying restrictions to your video. To do this, please do the following:
1. When you return to the Video Manager page, click the word “Edit” next to the video you uploaded. From the drop-‐down menu, select “Info and Settings.”
2. Next, select “Advanced Settings.”
3. Here, we suggest that you “uncheck” the “Allow comments” and “Users can view ratings for this video” boxes.
4. We also suggest you categorize your video as “Education” in the drop-‐down menu.
5. When you have finished making your changes, click “Save changes.” You may now return to your Video Manager or Dashboard, or you may navigate away from YouTube.
