A Few Rules of Thumb:

• Match warm colors with warm colors and cool

colors with cool colors

• Less is more (4 or fewer)*

• Select dark and light tones depending on your

theme*

• Consider color “emotion”*

• Remember accessibility

• Implement major tenets of design (contrast,

Open Educational Resources: A Definition

Open Educational Resources (OER) are educational

materials that are released at little to no cost and

with fewer usage restrictions for the general public.

Depending on the variety of public domain or

creative commons license an OER uses, educators

typically have greater freedom pertaining to saving,

using, and changing that material.

• Specifically refers to materials

that are openly licensed and

distributed

• Depending on the degree of

openness, many are

downloadable and in an editable

format

• Includes a wide variety of

materials like books, videos,

lesson plans, courses. Etc.

Finding OER for your classroom…

OER Commons is a fantastic repository for finding a wide variety of OER

for various topics and learner age levels. Go to

https://www.oercommons.org/ and select your desired search filters to

find OER that interest you.

Some online resources are specifically designed to present open

courseware and textbooks. These are a great opportunity for self-

paced learning or adapting courses.

As with any online resource, it is important to practice quality

assessment skills. Spelling, grammar, and thoroughness/accuracy of

content are key features. Some OER may also be aligned with

standards such as Common Core.
