The Sidney Herald’s ninth CreativeKids section brings the talents of areastudents to our readers. This section ispossible because of the support of localbusinesses and the assistance of SidneyMiddle School principal Kelly Johnsonand of course all the teachers and stu-dents – thank you.

This year the editorial portion of thissection was written by seventh- andeighth-grade students from Sidney Mid-dle School. The theme the students wroteon reflects on the positive influences intheir life. The question was “What areyou looking for in a BFF (best friend for-ever)?”

It always amazes me how each studentsees things so different. With bullying be-ing at the forefront of so many issues inthe schools it is encouraging to see howimportant picking a best friend is to eachof the students.

The Herald editorial staff chose the top10 essays, and from the top 10 the first-and second-place winners were awarded. No spelling, punctuation or editing has

been done to the articles, so what youread is what the students wrote.

Printed in the Creative Kids section arethe top 10 essays, which are marked withribbons to identify them. Other essays wereceived are also printed in the section. But due to the space available, not all theessays received are able to be printed inthis special section. Throughout the year,

the other essays will be printed on theKid’s Newspaper In Education page inthe regular paper.

The Creative Kids section is only possi-ble because of the advertising. The differ-ence is the ads are designed by students, not the production department of theHerald. These hand-designed advertise-ments were produced by the fourth-, fifth-and sixth-grade students from Sidney El-ementary, Sidney Middle School and RauSchool.

Each sponsoring business was given avariety of advertisements designed bystudents, with each business choosingthe best ad that represents its message. The chosen ad is the one printed in thissection. Just like the essays not printed, the advertisements not reproduced inthis section will be included in upcomingKid’s pages, so all creative ads will bepublished in the regular paper.

Students were encouraged to do theirhomework before drafting the ad. It is im-portant to learn about the business youare working for, so making a trip to visittheir business, asking questions and re-searching websites and other ads of thebusiness assisted the artistic student in

learning a valuable lesson in marketing. The Herald staff selected the top 10 ad-

vertisements from those selected by thebusinesses, with the top two receivingfirst- and second-place awards. The top 10ads are marked.

First-place advertisement winnerBridger Bridges, sixth-grader from Sid-ney Middle School received a $100 savingsbond from Wells Fargo; second-place adwinner Jordan Baxter, Sidney MiddleSchool sixth-grader, received a $50 sav-ings bond from Stockman Bank.

For the essay winners, first place wentto Tessah Desjarlais, eighth-grader fromSidney Middle School. She was awarded a$100 savings bond from Richland FederalCredit Union; second-place essay winnerTaylor Thiessen, Sidney Middle Schooleighth-grader, received a $50 savingsbond from 1st Bank. All savings bondswere donated by the financial institu-tions.

Sit back, relax and read what our chil-dren have to say about picking a bestfriend forever. See the creativity of pro-moting businesses in our community byviewing the advertisements in the sec-tion. You will be impressed.

Students write what they look for in best friend forever‘It always amazes me how eachstudent sees things so different.

When I was given this assignment to write about abest friend so many of my closest friends came tomind. I thought to myself how can I write about oneparticular friend of her or his qualities when thereare so many of my friends that possess so many dif-ferent qualities that I value in a best friend.

In growing up I thought that the word best friendmeant doing or liking the same thingas another, but have come to the real-ization that it takes more than that.Someone who is trustworthy, fun, car-ing, outgoing, and most importantlyaccepts me for who I am I consider abest friend. I remember sometimesback in elementary school silly fightsand drama that at the time to all of usclosest friends we thought it was theend of the world, but now we can look

back and giggle over it.In the past years I have had many friendships with

many different types of people. It has really openedmy eyes to watch some of my closest friends in thepast choose different paths than I have. I sometimeswish we could all go back to the days of kindergartenwhere we played with everyone and there wasn't thepressure and choices you have to make when you get

older.I asked my mom what she valued in a best friend

when I was writing this paper her reply was “some-one you can lose touch with for months and get backtogether and it feels like you haven't missed a beat”.

I realize in the years to come myself and my bestfriends may choose different paths and not continueto be as close as we are now but I will always considerthem my best friends and treasure all the times wedid have.

My best friend forever (BFF) has spe-cific qualifications. She has to have agreat personality. She has to be just likemy sister. She has to be like me. My bestfriend forever has to be a good person, and will be trustworthy to anybody. Ihave nothing against boys, but I’d wantmy BFF to be a girl.

I want my best friend forever to havean exquisite and unique personality. Iwant and need her to be someone that Ican trust and rely on when I need her.Hopefully, she will have a sporty per-sonality, and she will inspire me to be agood person. I want her to inspire me tostart to like things that I used to dislike. She will be someone who is naturallyfunny. She has to have a certain specialquality that just makes her stand out tome. I want to be able to cry with her andlaugh with her. I want us to be able tohave an exhilarating time together, sowe will never be bored. We will haveeach other to entertain throughout therest of our lives.

My BFF has to be justlike my sister. I want herto be able to call my par-ents “Mom” and “Dad”because she loves themas much as I do. We willintroduce each other toother people by saying,“This is my sister.” Iwouldn’t complain if wefought a little because,

then, our friendship will grow stronger. We have to express our love for eachother by simply smiling. I want us tohang out so much that our parents getannoyed with us spending so much timetogether. I will be able to influence her,and I want to be a good example, justlike a big sister should be to a little sis-ter.

I want my best friend forever to belike me. She needs to be honest. For ex-ample, if we go shopping, then shewon’t be afraid to tell me that the outfitI tried on looks hideous. I want her to

correct me when I’m wrong, even if Ibite her head off when she does becauseshe knows I like it that way. Her friendsare my friends and vice versa. Sheneeds to know everything about me,and I need to know everything abouther. She will be ambitious just like me,and she will have acceptable grades.

My best friend forever and I will havea lasting friendship, so that when we getolder, we’ll always have memories andstories to tell about each other. We willbe selfless and we will never be jealousof each other for any reason at all. Wewill know so much about each other, and everyone will be amazed by howmuch we are alike. We will always havean energetic friendship. I will never lether go. Our friendship will never falteror ever be questionable. I know that Ihave high expectations, but that should-n't matter to the right girl that comesalong. She will be my sister, my friend, and my inspiration. That girl will be myBFF.

BFF needs to have special qualitiesBy Brianna Reid

My BFF is someone special. You only get one chance to pickthat BFF so I am not going towaste my chance on somethingstupid. She can’t be some randomgirl off the street. She needs tohave special qualities. Those spe-cial qualities are what I look forin a friend. I don't know if youhave heard the saying “a friend islike a computer” but if you have, you know how I feel. You can tellyour friend anything and he orshe will keep it bottled up ifneeded. Just like a computer, heor she will tell you or otherssomething if they need to know.My BFF should be adventurous, because I go on a lot of adven-tures. I know for sure, I want myBFF to be someone I can relate to(unlike my mother) because thatperson is then a true best friend.Another quality my best friendshould have is humor. You can'thave a good conversation without

humor, and youalways need agood conversa-tion. Along withhumor I want aBFF that willlaugh at my stu-pid jokes (mainlybecause I makestupid jokes allthe time). I know

what you are thinking "Wow sheexpects all lot."

That is not even all the quali-ties I look for. For example, I lookfor someone that has a soft sideas well as a wild side. The mostimportant quality is having afriend who is good around chil-dren. I have three little brothersthat I care about more than any-thing. Another quality is theyneed to accept me for me. Last ofall I want someone that doesn'tcare what other people think. Mytwo best friends in the whole

world have every last one ofthese qualities. My BFF's are sofunny. They always know how tomake me laugh even when I actlike there is no hope in life. Myfavorite part of having a bestfriend is no matter what you dothey will always love you. Youcan never be loved or love some-one too much; therefore that is agreat quality for everyone. Iknow that you may have a hardtime picking out a best friend,

but look deep down and followyour gut feeling. Some advice foryou is to look past the outside

and enjoy the inside of peopleand you will always have a truebest friend.

BFF should be considerate, kindBy LaTasha Wieferich

A good best friend means a lotto people, but if they are tellingsecrets behind your back theyaren’t a real friend. What is atrue friend? A true BFF is con-siderate and kind, someone whocares what you are feeling 24hours seven days a week, some-one who is a comforting shoul-der to lean on. A friend is some-one that you can talk to andthey aren’t just pretending tocare when you are feeling blue. They know when you are upset. When my grandpa passed on, Iwas very sad in school. Myfriends comforted me and toldme it was OK and tried to makeme laugh and feel better. We didthe same for a friend in returnwhen her dog ran away. She wasvery devastated.

Friends have genuine feel-ings. When you come to school, they greet you by running andgiving you a big hug. They

missed you whenyesterday wasthe last day theysaw you. Friendsmake youhealthy if theyare humorous. Ilike a friend whois so funny yourorgans aboutburst from

laughter. When something seri-ous happens that really isn’tfunny you laugh and make thebest of it. My friends and Ilaugh about stupid things. Onetime I stuck a pin in a piece ofcorn, and I said look it's a uni-corn. We all laughed becausewe like being silly.

Friends are honest and willconfide in you with their mostimportant secrets. They trustyou with them and make youpinky swear you won’t tell any-one. Hopefully if you pinky

swear you keep your promise tothat friend.

I like my friendships to bemutual. I like to know that I ambeing a good friend back tothem, and they’re being good tome. We have the same relation-ship toward each other. The“golden rule” plays a key role inrelationships between me andmy friends.

My friends are supportive ofme in anything I do. They tell

me I'm goingto do andamazing joband score lotsof points inbasketball. Itmakes me feelgood. We lostby 20 points tothe WillistonCoyotes, butmy friendsstill told me Idid good andtried veryhard. Theywere proud ofme.

Friendsneed to be accepting of you. Youcan be weird, ugly, pretty, fat, orskinny. No matter what, theystill care for you. They don't tryto change you on the outside. They don’t tease you for yourlooks or anything else. They

love you inside and out no mat-ter what. The only way to have afriend is to be a friend. BFF'sdon't just come along. I would-n’t trade my friends for any-thing!

Ya know what I'm looking forin a best friend. Well I’ll tellyou what I’m looking for in abest friend. They have to befriendly (of course), funny andaccepting of me. One morething, they have to be crazy, like a good crazy. This is whatI'm looking for in a Bff, and ifthey don't meet my standardsthey get the boot, not literally.

Now, when I say funny it’snot “Why did the chicken crossthe road” funny but as in whatthey do funny. If I say, “I wishwe could climb that tree” andthey say, well they don’t sayanything because there alreadyhalf-way to the dang tree. Iwant to be around someonewho can make me laugh 24/7. Ifthey aren’t funny I don’t wantanything to do with them ortheir bad jokes.

To be a little more on the seri-ous side, they have to be accept-

ing. Being ac-cepting of mejust isn’t onething, take basiccable for exam-ple. If you havebasic cable it'sgood enough. But, if you havethe OMG, GreatBig Bertha pack-

age, you are amazed, and itdoes everything. With a friend, they either are acceptable, orthey really get you, and you re-ally get them. You can't reallylike a friend who doesn't acceptyou. If they don't accept me Iwon't accept them.

When I say crazy I don’tmean psycho, but as in funcrazy. If I feel like runningaround town ALL DAY, I wouldexpect them to run aroundwith me ALL DAY. Say I wantto get 10 liters of pop and spend

the next 4 to 5 days havingchugging contests, guess who Iwant by my side holding theTurn. My speakers are blaringAC/DC and I have been listen-ing to it for the last 5 hours, sohas my friend. See what 1mean. Good crazy, not CRAZY!

A friendly friend, who does-

n’t want one. Then that’s exact-ly what I’m ex-pecting, If startout a conversa-tion with, “Hey,how’s it going?” Idon’t want to bemet with a “Heybutt face!” Wouldyou like to? Say Iopen my lockerand I have aminute to get toclass, guess who Idon’t, want to bethere to slam my

locker. The teacher says, “Ok,let get with some partners.” Idon’t want to ask my “friend”to be in my group and be bom-barded with insults then a,quick to add “I’m just joking!”

Now that’s what I’m talkingabout, a crazy, funny, acceptingfriendly friend that everyone

wants to be friends with. I’mnot trying to be picky, but I dowant them to meet my expecta-tions. Who is or isn’t yourfriend? Make a check-list, findout, make adjustments or give‘em the boot!

The definition of a bestfriend is, “The one friend whois closest to you.” Well, to tellyou the truth, I have a LOT ofbest friends and all of themhave great qualities. They allhave what anyone would belooking for in a BFF. But I’mhere to tell you about what Ilook for in a best friend andwhat I look for is for them to becaring, trustworthy, and have agood sense of humor and ener-getic.

To be caring is a great quali-ty. I mean if I got in put in thehospital for something reallybad I would expect my bestfriend to care! If I got seriouslyhurt and I told her/him whathappened I wouldn’t want thatperson to answer with a, “Haha, sucks to be you!” I wouldwant them to say, “Oh no, areyou okay?” Sometimes on occa-sion if I, being my clumsy self,

tell them that Iran into a poleor something, then it wouldprobably beokay to answerwith the first re-ply. But I thinkyou get mypoint. I like tohave a caring

best friend.Trustworthiness is a pretty

important quality. If I have aHUGE secret, and I meanHUGE, and I needed to tellsomeone, I would want my bestfriend to be able to listen andnot tell anyone. I don't want mybusiness to be around thewhole entire town within thefive minutes that I told my bestfriend! It's super important tobe trustworthy.

The last quality that I am go-ing to write about is that my

best friend has to be funny andenergetic. If my best friendcan't make me laugh then theyprobably wouldn't want tohang out with me, because Ilove to laugh. I love it whenpeople say funny things or dofunny things that make melaugh so hard that I can’t stop! Also, they pretty much HAVE

to be ener-getic. For re-al, if they ex-pect me to sitand stare at awall withthem all day, then I woulddefinitelyhave to leavethem. I lovemaking mem-ories at alltimes and mybest friendhas to helpme makethem!

Basically, tosum it all up,my bestfriend prettymuch has to be caring, trust-worthy, funny, and energetic. Ihave a TON of best friends, and I know they will all be

there for me in the end. All ofmy best friends are all thesethings and that is why I lovethem.

Best friends have many char-acteristics. A best friend has tohave a sense of humor, but al-so they have to be caring andnice to other people. The labelBFF means that your friend issomeone that will never leaveyour side and will always bethere for you when you needthem the most. They shouldmake you feel better when youare down. To do that, theyneed to know your strengthsand weaknesses so they canmake you laugh or make youfeel good. Whenever I’m feel-ing down my best friend al-ways makes me laugh until Icry. My friends and I laugh atthe stupidest things. We makejokes about all the subjects weare talking about such asschool or something we ate forlunch.

Friends need to be kind to

other people. Ifthey’re not kindto other people, chances are theywon’t be kind toyou. My friendsand I always tryto befriend peo-ple gettingpicked on or arenew to the

school. Making other peoplefeel welcome is always a goodthing. You might make newfriends. My friends and I try tomake other people feel betterwhen they are feeling down.

Also, friends always checkon you if you look sad or werenot at school that day. Friendswill also defend you if some-one is being mean or are start-ing rumors about you. Myfriends protect me all the timeif people are picking on me.

They never leave me alonewhen I’m scared or need helpwith something. In return I dothe same for them. I thinkfriends are important in life,so in return I help my friendswhenever they need my help.Being a good friend is impor-tant to me.

Humorous. Friendly. Trust-worthy. Respectful. Determined. What do these words mean tome? These are all characteris-tics I look for in a good friend. They all describe my BFF.

Humor helps people getthrough hard times and plays abig part in fun times. We seem toremember funny events andtimes that we laughed for a long, long time. My best friend has agreat sense of humor and welaugh with each other a lot! MyBFF is so humorous he could bea comedian.

Friendly people are great to bearound. A friendly person is al-ways kind and won't put youdown. A friendly person helpsyou feel good inside and out MyBFF is always friendly and kindand never makes me feel badand doesn't treat others poorly.

Another characteristic I lookfor in a good friend is trustwor-

thiness . I wantmy BFF to beable to keep a se-cret. I don't al-ways want theworld to knoweverything I tellmy BFF. I wantto trust him tokeep the thingswe talk about

“just between us”.I want my BFF to be respect-

ful. I want him to respect meand my family and my otherfriends, too. It is important tome that he treat others like Itreat them and like he'd want tobe treated himself.

Determination is a key to get-ting things done. Sometimes de-termination leads to competi-tion. I would love my BFF to beas determined and as competi-tive as I am. If I win in a compe-tition with that friend, I would-

n't want them to get mad at me. Iwant a friend to be determinedenough to never give up whenthings are hard.

It can be hard to find a friendwith all of these qualities. But, Ihave been lucky. I have alreadyfound a few. Have you ever giventhis a thought? Take a few min-utes to think about it now. I'dlike to know what you look forin a BFF.

BFF should be humorous, friendlyBy Bradley Renders

Renders

A best friend is a person whois closest to you. I look for main-ly three things in a best friend. You need to be funny, trustwor-thy, and honest. I’m not a veryserious person, and I need mybest friend to be able to keep upwith my sense of humor. Somepeople just write me off as crazy, before actaully getting to knowme. My best friend needs to beable to make me laugh when imin a crabby mood and under-stand that when I make jokes I'mnot serious.

If you are going to be myfriend you need to be trustwor-thy. We all know teenage girls, when they are told somethingprivate they turn it it to some-thing completely different. Iwant to trust in my BFF that Ican vent to them without themtelling the world. She needs to bea good listener when I need totell her things. I’ve learned to

keep things mostly to myself butit’s always nice to have at leastone friend that you can tell evry-thing to. Being trustworthy is amajor quality.

Lastly, I want my best friend tobe honest. It is sometimes hardto tell people the truth, but it’susually for the best. If I havesomething on my shirt for exam-ple, I don’t want to walk aroundlooking like an idiot the wholeday, I want my best friend to tellme! On the other hand if you aremaking a big mistake that youthink is fine, it’s good to have aperson who will tell you that youaren't being logical. I have anamazing group of friends that Iall consider my best friends. It’snice to have a big group of girlsthat are always watching out forone another. A best friend will bethere for you through the thickand thin!

Friends are wonderful peoplewho love you and care for you. They make you laugh and cry. However, friends should havecertain qualities. For me, thequalities should be humorous, happy most of the time, and car-ing. They should also be forgiv-ing, understanding, adventur-ous, and just all around fun. Iwant a friend who’s humorousbecause I like to laugh. Myfriends and I always have funnysituations that we always bringup and have inside jokes with. Ifthey’re not humorous, then howare you going to have good sto-ries to tell later? One time myfriends and I were at my houseand we were playing nightgames. We were going to hideand there was an animal, and itlooked like a cat. We allscreamed and ran as fast as wecould back to the house. We nev-er did figure out what that was

because the nexttime we wentover there it wasgone. That inci-dent comes up inconversations alot now.

I also want myfriend to be car-ing, because ifthey don’t care

for you, then what’s the point ofbeing friends with them? WhenI lost my aunt to cancer, all ofmy friends came and gave mehugs and talked to me about itand helped me get over it. Myfriends should also be forgiving, because everyone says stupidthings in the heat of the mo-ment. I believe if you make asincere apology and try to fix it,they should be able to forgiveyou, depending on what yousaid. I admit that I have saidthings that I didn’t mean when I

was mad. It really helped me torealize to think about what I saybefore I say it, so I don't end uphurting someone's feelings andlosing a friend.

Understanding is anotherquality I look for in friends. Be-ing understanding to me is to be

able to listen and talkto a person and try torelate to what they’resaying, so you can tryto put yourself intheir shoes. Most ofmy friends are up forany challenge or ad-venture at any time. Ireally like that be-cause I like to do newthings and explorethings. When myfriend and I went tothe lake with my newjet skis, we had tolearn to drive them.We had just gottenout on the water, andit was a little rough. She was on a jet ski with my sis-ter and a huge wave came crash-ing over them. She fell off ! I evenfell off too. We both laughed sohard later that night that wewere crying. If someone has all

of these qualities I’m pretty surethat we could have some goodtimes and stories. My friendsare the world to me and get methrough thick and thin. Withoutthem, I think I would go crazy.

Everyone has a lot offriends. And out of allthose friends there isthat special person theycall their “best friend”.And that best friend hassome of the most amaz-ing qualities.

One quality I personal-ly think a best friendshould have is trustwor-thiness. If I tell my best friend who my

new crush is, Iwouldn't wanther to tell any-one, or evenworse, date him.If my friend didthat, she wouldmost definitelynot be my bestfriend.

Another good quality is honesty. Ifshe thought the way I did my hair ormake up was horrible and didn’t lookgood I would expect her to tell me. Espe-

cially if I asked her opinion. If she wasto lie to me about something so littlelike that, who knows what else shewould lie to me about.

One last quality I think all friendsshould have is enthusiasm. No onewants a boring old friend who sits ontheir couch all day. And if you are sadabout something, say your boyfriend oftwo years just broke up with you, theyshould help you through it and then tryto make you all happy again.

My best friend has all these qualities. She is super amazing and I love her todeath. I hope everyone finds the perfectbest friend like mine.

A best friend I think should be someonewho cares for me, respects me, and istrustworthy. A best friend should nevertalk behind my back or start rumorsabout me. A best friend should alwayshave your back even though I may not bepopular. Best Friends talk highly of oneanother.

A best friend should be trustworthy. Idon’t want a friend who that if I tell thatfriend my deepest, darkest secrets, to goout and tell everyone. I would want thatfriend to keep that secret. I also want tobe able to trust your friend so if you askyour friend to do something for me, I cantrust my friend will support me. Myfriend will help me in any way. So trust ina friend is a big factor for me. Trust is atest to see which friend is a good fit forme.

Care is a big factor in a best friend be-cause I don’t want a friend who doesn’tcare that I’m hurt. If I were feeling reallydown one day I would want a friend tocheer me up. I wouldn’t want that friendto tease me or to make me feel worse. If I

was being bullied I would want thatfriend to stick up for me I wouldn’t like itthat friend was just a bystander. I wouldwant that friend not to just care for mebut respect my things. I wouldn’t like afriend who always broke or stole my per-sonal stuff.

I would want a friend who respects me.The reason why I would want respect formy best friend is because I wouldn't wanta friend who thinks I would give themmoney when ever they want. I wouldn’twant to think that they could boss mearound or think they can do anythingthey want to me. I don't want a friend totake advantage of me. I want a friend tolike me for myself. That is why respect isso important to me in a best friend.

These are all the important Traits thatI’m looking for in a best friend. One littlething that would be fun is that if my bestfriend was funny. Humor is a importanttome; I like funny people because I like tolaugh. But that's just a little thing thatmakes a friendship special.

So what are you look for in a BFF?

BFFs help you through tough timesBy Mary Voll

I have pretty decent standards for some-body to be my BFF. I think everybodyneeds a BFF. They help you get throughtough things in life such as losing some-one close, or if there’s drama with otherfriends, you know someone will alwayshave your back. I also think everybodyhas certain standards or qualities theylook for in a BFF. Here are the standards Ihave.

One thing my BFF must be is sarcastic!I’m really sarcastic, so I need a BFF thatcan be sarcastic with me. Also, if I make asarcastic remark I don’t want them to beoffended. They also need to be sarcasticbecause, if I’m in a bad situation I like itwhen people make a sarcastic remarkabout it, it makes the situation I’m in a lit-tle bit better. My BFF must be sarcasticand be able to handle my sarcasm.

My BFF also needs to be trustworthy. My BFF has to be able to trust me and Ihave to be able to trust her. I need to knowthat my BFF won’t tell anybody my se-crets. Now a day’s people aren’t verytrustworthy, it’s a hard quality to find in

people, and that’s a very important quali-ty to me.

They last thing that’s important to me isthat my BFF must be outgoing! I want aBFF that wants to have fun, I don’t go overto their house and watch TV! I want a BFFthat I can go ride a four wheeler with, ordo something spontaneous with! I don’twant to hangout with a "Debbie downer!'

There’s only one person I know who canmatch all these standards that and that’sChelsea Shirk. Chelsea’s a very sarcasticperson, she's always honest with me andshe’s defiantly outgoing! I know she willalways support me and have my back. Sheis the best BFF anybody could've askedfor. I know we will be BFFS till the end.

‘My BFF also needsto be trustworthy.’

Mary Voll Sidney Middle School student

My best friend has to bring me up,not put me down. She should pull meout of a burning building. Not run forher life. I don't want her to hate on me.I want her to love one me, like a sister.Do I want someone to sing and dancewith me when I amhappy? Do I wantsomeone who says Idon't care? I amvery sure that Iwant someone whowill sing and dance. My best friend hasto pull me out of awell. They can’tpush me in.

She is amazing. She is the best per-son in the world. She helps me with myproblems. She can make some prob-lems better, and some problems worse.Whatever she does she needs to helpme. I have always loved her like a sis-ter. She can be the person that I tell allmy secrets to. I adore how she alwayslistens to what I say what ever it is,

good or bad. When I have somethingbad on my mind she is the one to helpme.

When I want to be left alone my bestfriend is the one to find out what iswrong with me and if it is ok she will

leave me alone. She has been therewith me for mywhole Jr. High life.Good and bad.Thick and thin. She has been therewith me forever. Idon't know what Iwould be without

her as my friend. She has been thereforever and I will be there for her whenher life it through the bad. I love herlike my sister. I love her because she ismy sister. She is my look alike. She ismy twin. She has an amazing sense ofhumor. She is like the world’s funniestperson. She can be crafty. She is thebest crafts person in the world. She ismy best friend. My best friend for life.

Friends need to accept each otherBy Mattie Steinley

My best friend, Katlyn, plays the flute, rides horses, laughs out the wazoo, andcan tap like no one has ever seen. Shelikes people for who they are and getsalong with mostly everyone. She hasmany characteristics that make her whoshe is as a person.

You have to laugh out the wazoo with usand at us. We are unbearable people whenit comes to being blondes. One time Kat-lyn and I were at her ranch playing in themud. We were jumping around, and act-ing like monkeys. Then I lost my boot andstepped in the mud. We laughed togetherfor a long time. Then we went inside, changed socks, and came out again.

Friends have to accept themselves forwho they are. Don’t ever change yourself.Just because your friend wears designerclothes, it doesn’t mean that you have tochange so they will like you. Just be your-self. If your friends ever tell you that youare too weird, tell them that if they have aproblem you that they should get use to it.Katlyn and I laugh at each other becausewe are defiantly weird. If Katlyn were to

try to change herself, I would definitelystart to cry. I would cry because she isamazing the way she is.

We try to come to at least one of oursport activities. She comes to my basket-ball and volleyball games. I go to her tapand basketball games. She came to myvolleyball practice while I was servingthe ball and hit the coach in the head. When we use to play basket ball together,I came to every scrimmage.

Katlyn and I have the funnest times to-gether and love to be around each other. She is the best buddy for keeps.

‘She likes people for who they areand gets along with mostly everyone.’

Mattie SteinleySidney Middle School student

Some friendships don’t last forever, but some will go on until they die. Ihave this friend who is always there forme. You could say he’s just like me.He's funny, always in a good mood, andhe has a short temper just like I do.But we are different in some ways likehe has blond hair and ice-blue eyes, while I have brown hair with hazel orgreen eyes. That’s only physically. He iseverything I look for in a best friend. We would always hang out after schooland just chit-chat about our day andtalk about random stuff like why welike pie. I know it’s stupid but that’show we are. We’re usually acting likeidiots when it comes to the weekend, but at school we kind of do the samething but different because if we dowhat we do on the weekends, then wemight get in trouble.

When it comes to problems with fam-ily or other friends, we are alwaysthere for each other. Like the timewhen he had lost his brother, James, he

wasn't like he used to be, but a little hu-mor went a long way. Ever since thatday, he’s been the old Roxas I use toknow because I made him laugh.

About a week ago, I had texted mycousin, Troy, and he said that he hadbad news. I couldn’t think what the badnews was and it took me awhile. Final-ly he texted me back and it said: I’msorry but...Grandpa has type B3 lungcancer. He’s in chemotherapy rightnow...”

I about burst into tears when I re-ceived the message. I didn’t want tolose him to lung cancer too. That nightI told Roxas and he hugged me and saidthat he was so sorry. He comforted meand since then, I felt better about it andI believe my Grandfather can pullthrough. That’s what a best friendwould do. They will comfort you andtell you that things will get better astime goes by. I hope you have a bestfriend in your life because what wouldlife be without one?

Friends should have humor, loyaltyBy Sarah Turek

What I look for in a BFF is pretty simple...andsometimes hard to find. Humor, slightly crazy, loyal. My best friends understand when I’mlaughing at something nobody else gets. We laughat the same things. My best friends aren’t scaredaway by my mad scientist act. One time one of myfriends told me her other friends were scared ofme. Oh well. I don't care too much what peoplesay, so sometimes I am very sarcastic. My friendsare also experts at sarcasm. I am very klutzy attimes, so I am most sarcastic then. One time, abunch of times really, I will get hurt and falldown. The first thing my BFF always says is “Areyou ok?” I, of course, say “No!” I never get whypeople ask if you’re ok when you are on theground. I always tease them for asking such astrange question.

I look for humor in all my friends. I love tolaugh with them. Sometimes sleepovers turn intogiant giggle fits. Something was funny, so welaughed, and then I fell down the stairs laughing. That made us laugh harder, and then we couldn’tget back up the stairs...Anyway, my BFF definite-ly needs a sense of humor. My BFF also needs tobe able to take a joke. We tease each other, ofcourse. I probably would have no friends if they

weren’t such great people in the first place. Myfriends help me make secret plans, secret mis-sions, and secret clubs, all of which dissolve intolaughter pretty quickly. I can’t stay serious forvery long around my friends. If I'm in a bad mood, they'll cheer me up, and vice versa. My friendskeep secrets, if I have any. I keep theirs too, obvi-ously. Nobody is a good friend if they can’t keep asecret.

Nobody talks the whole time; we all like to talk,so we take turns. We always want to talk and talkand talk. We are in the same activities, also. I'mfriends with another martial arts person and an-other Girl Scout. I’m not just friends with peoplewho are like me, though. If you have a sense ofhumor and sarcasm, you probably are like me. Ilike to do crazy and random things. I will go offon a completely different topic than what we weretalking about 10 seconds earlier. If somebody lis-tened to us for one minute, they wouldn't have aclue what we were talking about. One time, I was-n't listening and got very confused. I heard justthe last few words and “understood” somethingWAAAAAAY off topic...that sometimes happens alot. My best friends are the best. They are the ab-solute best friends anybody would want.

It might seem impossible tofind that perfect friend. I mean, there are so many people outthere in the world. How can I besure that I found the right one? There are certain things that Ilook for in a person that makesme certain I can call her myBFF. Here are the ways I can tellif she is that perfect friend.

First of all, she has got to behonest. If I want a healthyfriendship then there can be nolies. I know it sounds corny, butit’s true. People say that theywon’t lie, but they do it anyway, even when they don't mean to. Iknow that I will lie. Even when Itry not to, I will lie, but at leastI'll admit it. A lot of peoplewon't. Why? I am not sure, butall I know is that I will.

Secondly, she has to be nice. She has to be nice to me, myother friends, and my family. She can’t just go around andmake fun of the people I care

about. If she is defending her-self, then it is alright. Otherthan defending herself, it iscompletely unacceptable. Ifshe’s mean and obnoxious, thenI don’t know how I could be herfriend, or let her be my friend.

Lastly, she has to be outgoing.I can't stand boring people. Ilove living life in a fun, adven-turous, and safe way all at thesame time. My perfect friendcan not be one of those nerdsthat stay home and play videogames in the darkness of abasement. That is a total no-no.She has to live life the way I do.She has to be fun, creative, andmind blowing.

These are all the qualitiesthat I look for in a BFF. If Ifound someone with every sin-gle quality listed here, I wouldbe proud to call them the per-fect friend for me. Fortunately, Ihave already found that specialsomeone. I hope that everyonecan find their perfect friend, just like I did.

What a best friend should beBy Marcus Lovegren

Do you have a best friend? Someonewho always has your back? Tel Her-manson is my best friend. I have a list ofqualities that a bestfriend should have, and Tel fits mystandards perfectly. One of the thingswe share is that weboth like to learnabout the WWIIera. Tel and I haveread many bookson the subject. Al-so, we like to talkabout the missionsthey went on or theweapons they used.Tel and I also enjoy(this is very clichefor a teenager) playing video games. We’ve spent hours playing Call of Duty.Another major quality about Tel that Ilike is that he is very respectful to me,or my property. In the eight years I've

known Tel; he's never damaged any-thing of mine or hurt my feelings.

Tel also has a good sense of humor.Whether it’s from a fun-ny event that we bothsaw or something funnythat happened in avideo game, Tel is one ofthe first to make a jokeabout it. And it’s notone of those corny jokesthat you have to fakelaugh to. I especiallylove it when we jokearound and we justmake it up as we go. Itwouldn’t be very enjoy-able to hang out withsomeone who is a stickin the mud.

So I think that you should use Tel as amodel for your friends because he hasall the qualities that make him, the per-fect friend.

I look for kindness, funniness, and goodperson to be around. That is what I lookfor in a good friend. I want a friend thatwill stand by you when you are beingtease or getting in trouble by your par-ents for what you to did. Also one thatwhen you are sad they will not be meanto you because maybe you cry in school. Ido not want a friend that just says bye toyou when you are getting in trouble forwhat you both did. I do no want a friendthat when you cry in school she tease youand say quit crying really man up andcry at home. I don't want a friend that ismean to other kids because we are all thesame. I don't want a friend that will justditch you to go hang out with his otherfriends. I especially don’t want a friendthat does drugs and tries to get me to dothem. If one of my friends did drugs Iwouldn’t be their friend anymore. Wellmy best friends are Cayla, Megan andSadie. They are all good friends and noneof them do bad things. Cayla and I alwayshang out at school. Megan and I always

hang out at my house we go in to my pas-ture and run around with my horses. Wealso take our dogs for walk a lot and wesled down my hills. Sadie and I we alwaystext. Best friends are forgivingBy Cayla Norby

I already have a best friend. She is fun-ny, considerate to others, and she is goodat sports. I remember one time we wereout at her house and we were playing oneon one. I guess her dog didn’t get that wewere playing one on one because her dogbit the back of my leg, while she went infor the shot. She won. One of the bestpart of our friendship is we don’t everfight except for once. I remember that daybecause it was the one of the worst daysof my life. I was on the swings with myother friend and she walked over and saidhi and I said hi. But I guess she didn’thear me. She left and didn’t talk to me forlike forever. That’s what it felt like. I wastruly miserable until she came up to meand said sorry for fighting with me, andthen we just started to go on hanging outlike nothing happened. She is also willingto take risks with me. I say this becauseone time we were sledding and I said let'sgo down this cliff- looking hill. She said,“I don’t know if we should go straightdown because there is water at the bot-tom” I said, “Come on it will be fun.”

She said ok and so we went down. Ofcourse she was right and we landed inslushy, yellowish water. It was disgustingand so cold. Like a good friend, she forgotabout the whole thing and never told me,“I told you so”, ever! She is like my littlesister I never had(even though she is old-er than me) because we have so much funtogether like riding bikes, walkingaround and talking, and doing dumb stuffof course. We do dumb stuff like tryingto make her dog be a cow, while we try torope him. [Her dog is a little dog too] Sheis dumb and I am dumber. She is the bestand I am the friend. We are truly bestfriends.

‘We are truly best friends.’

Cayla NorbySidney Middle School student

What I look for in a best friend is differ-ent qualities. The number one rule that Ilook for in a best friend is her personality. One thing that makes me really mad iswhen a friend takes it out on me or any-one else when she is mad. I get so frustrat-ed when that happens. Oh yeah, what elseI look for is someone that doesn't startDRAMA! One year it was all about drama, and boy did I hate it? Another thing isthat they never ditch our plans. Some-times my friends do that. It makes me feeldown, and I’m not that important to them.In the same way, if we do hang out, theybring their other friends too withouttelling me. Another quality is that theydon't use me or others. Next quality I lookfor in a best friend is someone who won'tget mad at me for the stupid reasons. Thethird quality I look for is someone thatdoesn't lie straight to my face and I wouldrather hear the truth then a lie.

Good traits for a best friend. One trait isthat they can keep my promises and se-crets. That’s something you got to be ableto rely on friends. Second trait I look for

in a best friend is that I can call them any-time of the day when I’m down. When afriend cares for you got to care back.Third trait I look for in a best friend isthat we have stuff in common. Fourthtrait I look for in a bff is someone thatwouldn't get mad if you couldn't hang outor wouldn't care. Also they would say“hey maybe another time”.The most im-portant trait is being truthful. That’s kindof the same thing about lying but I meanthis one by when you think you got some-thing on you face like a pen mark, you askthem if you do and the answer is no. Theybetter tell the truth!

Do you have a BFF? I do. One of my BFFhas everything I look for in a best friend. She and I like to adventure the outdoors. We also love nature. Anyway we are boththere for each other too. I have been herfriend since preschool. Since then ourfriendship has grown. She is alwaystruthful to me, so I am truthful back toher. Hopefully she and I will be friendsforever. Best friends are very important tohave.

What I like, love about BFFBy Tess Ler

My best friends and I love to be crazy andlove to be around each other. We always makejokes and be sarcastic with each other. Some-times we have our ups and downs, but we allget along after we fight. When we get intotrouble and we are around each other, we al-ways take the blame for each other. We neverleave each other out. For example, one of myfriends had night games. I was inside andeverybody was worried about where I was be-cause they thought I was taken by some ma-niac. Then I came out and everybody ran upand hugged me because they were so wor-ried. We try to be in every sport with eachother because we know we can rock the otherplayers on the enemy team. We always try toeat at the same places for lunch just so wecan talk about how the morning went andwhat our guy-friends did that was so funny. Ifwe have a bad day, we would try and pickeach other up off the ground and try to maketheir day a little better. It works most of thetime. We always help each other out. If one ofus forgets her study guide at school, we callher and study with her so she won't fail hertest. If we fall we pick each other up. If we

get into fights, we always find a way that it'sall our faults. We like to do all the samethings most of the time. Sometimes we dis-agree on things, but we make time to dothings that we all like. We don't bash eachother behind their back. We always tell se-crets like a little girl tells her teddy bears. Ialways say that if you cry, it's because I madeyou laugh too hard. I love my friends like afat kid loves cake. It’s really hard to keep astraight face around them. They will alwaysmake me laugh. My friends find new ways tohang out with each other. They make up newgames and make new rules to old ones. It isreally fun to play the games with them. Wealways do something wrong, and we all havea laugh. It is amazing what my friends and Ican find to do. I hope we stay friends forever.Danielle and I were thinking that we couldhave a friend's reunion two years after wegraduate from high school so we can still befriends and see each other just not everydaylike the old days. I love my friends even morethan I love chocolate. I hope you have a BFFor lots of BFFs like me.

I have many friends and I love all ofthem, but my best friend is QuinnMcGlothlin. He is my best friend be-cause he is funny, will do anythingfor you, and is fun to hang out with. Those are the qualities I look for in afriend. One time I stayed the night atQuinn’s house and we were bored. We were watching a show wherethese people do crazy things. On theshow this guy went to a collage foot-ball team’s practice and tried to re-turn a punt against them. He keptgetting hit hard. Quinn and I decidedwe should go outside and do that. Wewent and put these pads on that hehad. We took turns trying to do whatthe guy on the show was doing. Ithurt but it was fun. I will never forgetit. Another time at Quinn’s it was re-ally hot outside so we put his trampby his garage, climbed on top of it,and jumped off onto the tramp. Wehad the sprinkler under the tramp sowe got wet. When we were tired of

that, we laid on top of the garage. When cars would drive by we wouldget up and dance for them. It was fun-ny. About three summers ago wewanted to ride bikes to the swimmingpool, but we didn’t have enough hel-mets. Quinn used a baseball helmet.Everyone looked at him. It was a funbike ride. As you can see, Quinn and Ilike to entertain ourselves by doingfunny thing. I wish I could tell you allthe things that we have done. Wehave some good memories.
