creative solutions take flight - energy efficient air handling units

1
A McKenney’s service team and Emory University Woodruff Physical Education Center (WPEC) staff improved energy efficiency with new air handling units (AHUs). THE CHALLENGE The AHUs at the WPEC had reached the end of their service life. The mechanical room adjacent to the pool area had very little space for AHU removal and installation. Additionally, the pool was open throughout the project, requiring collaboration with WPEC staff to avoid disruption of scheduled recre- ational and athletic activities. THE SOLUTION Working to maintain safety with WPEC staff, the team installed new ductwork and then disassembled the new AHUs. Next, they removed two window sections near the pool, turned the unit components side- ways and used a crane to lift the parts through the windows. Once the components were inside—with half hanging mid-air over the pool at one point—they were rigged upright to make the final turn into the mechanical room. THE RESULTS The new AHUs are now contributing to Emory University WPEC’s energy savings initiatives.
