2012, is now here! Can you believe it, how time flies when you’re having fun! The wonder of a New Year is the anticipation of all the possibilities and excitement the New Year has in store for us. 2012 promises to be just as action packed for Handi Quilter as in the past. We have most of the usual shows lined up to come and visit you all, plus a few “NEW” in store events. The Handi Quilter Truck Event will again be making one of it’s first stops of the year at Country Traditions in March as we celebrate “National Quilting Day” with the International Quilt Study Center in Lincoln. May will find us very busy, with some soon-to-be announced exciting news, The Machine Quilter’s Show Case in Kansas City and Quilt Market, all in a matter of just a few weeks. In the New Year fashion, we have all our favorite Technique classes on the schedule, plus a couple of new ones planned to keep your quilting talents inspired.

As we write this, we look back on 2011 with very fond memories; of all the “New” Handi Quilter friends we have made, and all the talented Handi Quilter owners we have quilted with over the past year! It is always exciting to make new friends and share the joy of quilting with each of you! Thanks to each of you for selecting us as your Authorized Handi Quilter Representative!

Achieving perfect tension is easy once you understand the relationship between Thread, Needle, and Tension. You will leave class Tension confident and ready to use a variety of threads.


Country Traditions Class Polices: Reservations are required for All Classes, Retreats, and Events. PAYMENT IS REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF REGISTRATION TO HOLD YOUR PLACE IN CLASS. Complete class supply lists will be given when you register for the class. Classes require three or more students, registered at least a week before the class date, for the class to be held. My Machine Likes Only One Type of Thread!Really Variety is a Good Thing! Let’s spice it up!

What would you say to someone who told you, “ I love to watch TV but my TV only gets one channel so that’s all I watch. I’d really like to watch other channels but the reception is very poor. I’m afraid to adjust the settings too much, I might break it.”

“Are you content to be in a one-channel rut or would it be better to learn how to adjust the TV so it operates as it was meant to? You might worry that if you tryto adjust it, you’ll damageit and lose the single channel,you now have. However,if you learn how to properly adjust the TV, you will have a TV that gives you many choices instead of just one!

When we hear, “My machine only likes one type of thread. It doesn’t like that thread” it brings to mind the One Channel TV. How boring! A good quality machine should be able to work with a variety of threads. Handi Quilter machines provide a full range of channels, including the metallic channel, the heavy cotton channel, the hologram thread channel, the ultra fine thread channel, and so on; why not learn to make a few safe and simple adjustments so the machine operates to it’s full potential?

Most sewing machines have factory set tensions for 40 weight polyester thread. When we change channels by adding a heavier or sensitive thread, the machine is still sewing at this preset setting and sometimes does not accommodate the new thread. This is the critical point where we decide whether to give up and stay in the plain thread rut or to learn to make adjustments to accommodate the more appealing threads.

Making adjustments is surprisingly simple, 99% percent of the time adjustments involve increasing the needle size or loosening the upper tension setting.

Needle Size: Small needles shred medium and heavy threads. Using too small of a needle is like trying to force a heavy shoelace through a small eyelet. Increase your needle eye size.

Upper Tension Setting. Reduce the tension setting. The more you learn to adjust tension, the more versatile your machine will be-come. Reduce the tension not by small fractions but by 3 or 4 whole numbers. It is better to go way down and then ease back up than to go down one tiny step at a time.
