A Message From ACI Nebraska President Kyle Poff It's been a busy year and construction season!
Kyle PoffACI Nebraska
Chapter President
I hope you are all having an excellent #ConcreteTough construction season. It appears the efforts to repair the widespread damage from this spring's flooding is going well.
In May, ACI-NE held programs in both Kearney and Lincoln. Speaker Dave Suchorski of Ash Grove Cement delivered “Planning For Success.” Topics included were pre-construction conferences, ordering and scheduling and onsite preparations for pumping Ready Mix concrete. Thank you to all who attended.
As we move into our fall season, I hope everyone is optimistic and positive about getting their projects wrapped up before winter hits. Personally, I am hoping for a mild and short winter.
In August we had our summer outing at Nelson's Landing at Woodcliff Lakes. Thanks to Norm and Ginni for hosting us again. In late September we hosted ACI International
ACI Nebraska Chapter Nominates Nelson & Flott for Open Board Positions There will be two board positions to be filled by the end of this year. Kelly Nausland of Overland Ready-Mix Concrete and Tyler Jenson of Ash Grove Cement Company fulfilled their 3-year term on the Board of Directors for the Nebraska ACI Chapter. Mr. Jensen has been asked to continue as a Nebraska ACI Officer, which still leaves two board positions open.
As the Past President and Chairman of the Nominations committee of the Nebraska ACI Chapter, it is my responsibility to fill the positions. I would like to introduce you to my nominations: Keegan Nelson (Martin Marietta) & Mark Flott (OPPD). These nominations are to be voted on by the Nebraska ACI membership prior to our annual meeting in early 2020.

Gear Up for Training
As an FYI, the ACI Concrete Field Training, ACI Concrete Strength Training, ACI Concrete Finishing Training and the recently- added ACI Adhesive Anchor Installer Training dates will be out shortly. Be sure to check with your employees/employers so we can provide a good scheduling experience and enable you to take care of everyone efficiently. Our Training Coordinators Mike Willman and Rochelle Hitz put a lot of time and effort into pulling this off without a hitch. They need your help and assistance in being prompt with your registrations.

Evaluation and Repair of Concrete Buildings: The Tale of Two High-Profile Projects in the US
Omaha, NE 9/26/19– Randall Poston, Ph.D., P.E., S.E., current President of the American Concrete Institute, recently visited the ACI Nebraska Chapter and spoke during an ACI Nebraska breakfast program.
Dr. Poston is a structural engineer and the founding senior principal of the consulting engineering firm Pivot Engineers in Austin, TX. He is also a Neil Armstrong Distinguished Visiting Scholar at Purdue University.
The repair of concrete structures presents unique construction challenges compared to new construction. These include the fact that there are often variations in the as-constructed details compared to those shown in design and construction drawings. Moreover, for buildings that have been in service for some time, the aging and deterioration of components can make construction
more difficult especially if the building must remain in service during repairs. To describe some of these challenges, Randy presented the evaluation and repair of two high-profile concrete buildings in the US – the Courthouse Square mid-rise building complex in Salem, Oregon, and the Austonian high-rise residential tower in Austin, Texas. The presentation discussed the nature of design and construction defects that were uncovered during investigation, the types of concrete deterioration that had been experienced during service, and the types of repair and strengthening schemes that were utilized to bring the buildings into compliance with building codes. The presentation was very interesting and very much appreciated by the ACI Nebraska Chapter. It is always a pleasure to meet such knowledgeable professionals in our industry.
