Welcome to C.A.S.E.

The Creativity, Action, Service and Enrichment program is designed to add further depth to the learning experience here at BHA. It leads into the Principal’s Award programs and gives all of our girls a chance to either hone their skills in a certain area or just find something new that interests and inspires them.

Enjoy the program and remember that if you don’t get what you want the first go around then make an effort to enjoy and learn from what you are given.

You never know, we may just change the way you look at life.

Overview

The Branksome CASE Program covers four essential areas:

Creativity

Action

Service

Enrichment

All students are encouraged to be involved in each of the four areas of

our C.A.S.E. Program. Students are expected to maintain excellence

in their academic pursuits, whilst achieving balance through C.A.S.E.

activities.

It is our belief that all four areas of the program are essential for

our students and assist in providing balance and ensuring both

their experiences and portfolios are rich and rewarding. Year 7 - 10

students require a minimum of 3 Creativity, 3 Action, 3 Service and

1 Enrichment activity to complete the requirements for the BHA

Principal’s Award whilst Diploma students must meet the IBDP CAS

requirements.

The C.A.S.E Programme

The CASE timetable is as follows:

Some service Activities are ongoing and, although fitting into the

C.A.S.E. program, happen irregularly throughout the term. Some

Academy training may also be arranged out of the regular C.A.S.E.

blocks.

Enjoy your time at BHA. Take in the diversity of activities offered. You

may just find something that you love to do that you can continue to

take with you well after you have graduated.

I write about the power of trying, because I want to be okay with failing. I write about generosity because I battle selfishness. I write about joy because I know sorrow. I write about gratitude because I am thankful - for all of it. -Kristin Armstrong (American Athlete)

The chq software has been employed to help create the complex lists

that come from such a vibrant program. You can access a ‘how to

make my selections’ document by clicking on the link.

Some C.A.S.E. like academies, councils, orchestras, and performances

are pre-selected for those students that have successfully tried out for

these activities. These will appear on your selection sheet when you

first log in

Clashes with these activities with other things that students might like

to do is inevitable but I hope all can access a wide variety of incredible

opportunities throughout their time at BHA.

The C.A.S.E. program is intrisically linked to the Principal’s Award in

grades 7 - 10 and the IBDP CAS program. Information about these

programs can be found by clicking on the links.

PHOTOGRAPHY ACADEMY

This academy is offered for Grade 10, 11 or 12 Visual Arts students

who want to further develop their skills and techniques using digital

media. Learn how to use a range of different cameras and operations

that will help you create interesting art photographs. The course will

also teach you different lighting effects and how to photograph in

natural and artificial lighting. We will also cover Photoshop and other

digital software. We will study many photographers to help you with

ideas and techniques for creating quality photographs. Off-site field

trips to various locations around Jeju will allow you the opportunity to

digitally capture the cultural richness of the island.

DRAMA PRODUCTION 7 - 11

This will alternate between a Musical Production and a Play once

every two years. It aims to involve actors, dancers, artists and of

course, musicians and singers if it’s a Musical. Drama Productions

teach teamwork, discipline, confidence, and audience communication.

There are also opportunities to learn lighting and sound manipulation.

The learning of different skill is endless as you have experienced from

our first ever Musical, Aladdin. This is a guaranteed to be a rewarding

and enjoyable activity!

Symphony Orchestra is an auditioned group comprising winds,

percussion and string sounds into one enormous force of music ☺ We

will play music of all styles from Classical to Pop / Rock and Movie

music. The music is challenging so you need to be able to cope with

complicated rhythms at high speeds. Of course, you will be taught

strategies of coping with this level of ensemble. Please audition with

Ms. Siew if you play an orchestral instrument. This runs for 2 hours

and you have to commit to it all year.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

STAGE BAND

This is a group that comprises, one pianist,

one rhythm guitar, a lead guitar, Bass,

saxophones, clarinets and a possibility of

some flutes. It will include improvisation

skills and knowledge of the blues.

Clubs3D GAME DESIGN

From the Xbox to iPad, Unity is the industry

standard game engine behind the magic.

Together we will explore how to adapt 3D

models for use in Unity, add a first person

controller and add the programming that

brings the world to life.

You do not need to be able to program to

enjoy these sessions, but you should be

comfortable working in 3D environments

(such as Google Sketchup) and enjoy

experimenting with technology.

BALLET

This class teaches discipline, techniques

and poise through the art of ballet.

BARBERSHOP

Barbershop is a style of acappella, or

unaccompanied vocal music. Each of the

four parts has its own role: generally, the

lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes

above the melody, the bass sings the

lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone

completes the chord, usually below the lead.

You need to be able to harmonize without

getting put off by other parts ☺ It is a difficult

but rewarding art of singing in parts. Choir

aspects are combined in this co-curricular.

Accompanied Classical, Gospel, Jazz music

are included in this repertoire. Audition with

Ms. Siew and give it a try! If this is your

choice it runs once a week and you have to

commit a whole year.

COMMUNITY GRAPHICS

Students use their illustrator skills to create

graphic resources for others e.g. Posters,

Classroom resources etc.

3D MODELLING 9 - 12

Learn 3D Modeling in Solidworks software.

SolidWorks is solid modeling CAD (computer-

aided design) software that runs on Microsoft

CREATIVE WRITING

The Creative Writing Club offers students

the opportunity to learn about and practice

writing in many different genres such as

fiction, poetry, creative writing and other

areas. At the end of the school year, a

collaborative publication of collective student

work will be produced.

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Is a short form of digital media production

that allows people to share aspects of their

life story. Using story-circles, poetry, art, and

theatre, students will explore a common

theme and create a short digital piece on

iMovie.

Every community has a story to tell or

a cause to champion, but not always a

storyteller than can bring it to life. Together

we will develop skills in telling your story,

planning the shoot and the practical skills

to cary out the shoot. Of course, once these

skills are in place, we will introduce the pro

editing software Final Cut X to make your

documentary really leap off of the screen

You don’t need to be a tech wizard to enjoy

documentary making, but you should be

comfortable with a camera and basic movie

editing software.

eye and create wonderful pieces of digital art.

SETS AND PROPS

The school drama / music production is a great way to meet up with

great ‘Theatre’ people and to work in a dynamic and creative team.

In this activity, students will work on design aspects of the set and

props for the production. We will then make the design come to life

for the production. When we are not working on the musical we will

design, create and install 2D and 3D Murals to be displayed around

the school. This is a co-curricular that promises a lot of very rewarding

hard work.

The Intermediate String Orchestra comprises violinists, violists, cellists and double bassists who want to gain confidence playing in ensemble before delving into the exacting repertoire of the Symphony Orchestra. We will play fun, easier music from many styles to develop confidence and skills in ensemble playing before auditioning to join the Symphony Orchestra.

INTERMEDIATE STRING ORCHESTRA

The Wind Orchestra is for brass and woodwind intermediate players who are not quite ready yet to play difficult repertoire. We will play fun, easier music from many styles to develop confidence and skills in

ensemble playing before auditioning to join the Symphony Orchestra.

The Viewpoints is an exciting system used for mainly for training

actors and dancers, but it is also a way of working that is useful to all

sorts of people. You will find this training useful if you are a budding

playwright, filmmaker, fine artist, sportswoman, poet, composer,

martial artist, sculptor.

Training in The Viewpoints demystifies the artistic process and

provides you with a shared language. It helps art-makers share ideas,

make dynamic and original artwork and deconstruct work seen. You

will initially be trained in the 9 Physical Viewpoints before moving on

to the Vocal Viewpoints.

The training will serve to make you a very powerful and articulate

performer and artist. The Viewpoints will make you feel alive and

connected to others in a very vital and responsive way. You’ll love it!

You will need water, leggings and a t-shirt. You will be working barefoot.

VIEWPOINTS

Studio will comprise Life Drawing classes (nudes), Painting Academy,

portfolio development and open studio. It is an opportunity for

students to come and work on individual projects that will be tailored

to getting into Art School and University courses. Studio is a time to

get together and discuss current art issues, critically analyze work,

work with local artists and of course Mrs. Hall.

Badminton is played using strung rackets (similar to tennis rackets, but

smaller, more flexible and much lighter) and a feathered shuttlecock

by either two or four players on a marked rectangular court. It can be

played indoors or outdoors, although games normally take place in

a draft-free indoor environment. The object of the game is to score

points by hitting the shuttlecock over the net into the opponent’s half

of the court, so that it hits the ground before they are able to return it.

Basketball is a fast indoor game played with two teams of five players

each. The object of the game is to score as many baskets as possible

by shooting the ball through a hoop high up at both ends of the court.

The winning team is the one that has scored the most points after

two halves of play.

Golf has been described as a sport played 95 per cent with the mind

and five per cent with the body. The simple objective is to use a series

of clubs to propel the ball, both through the air and along the ground

into a series of 18 holes in as few strokes as possible.

BADMINTON

GOLF

Cross country is a pursuit in which runners race over courses

set on natural terrain as opposed to a running track or road. The

runner who completes the course in the quickest time wins. In team

competitions, the winning team is the one whose aggregate placings

of team members totals the lowest.

BASKETBALL

CROSS COUNTRY

AcademyOffered at various times throughout the year

Page 17: Creativity, action, service and enrichment portfolio
Page 18: Creativity, action, service and enrichment portfolio

Swimming competitions are held in four major categories: freestyle,

breaststroke. butterfly and backstroke, over a variety of distances.

They include both individual and team events.

Tennis is a racket game played on a court of two halves, separated

by a net. It is played by individuals (singles) or pairs (doubles) whose

object is to hit the ball over the net, landing within the confines of

the court with the aim of preventing your opponent from being able

to hit it back.

Volleyball is a court game played by two teams of six players who use

their hands or arms to hit the ball over a net. The winning team is the

one that scores the most points - achieved by making the ball touch

the ground on the opposition’s side of the court.

SWIMMING

VOLLEYBALL

TENNIS

TRACK AND FIELD

Academy Offered at various times throughout the year

Soccer is played between two teams of 11 players. The aim of the

game is to put the ball into the opponent’s goal by kicking or heading

it. A game lasts for 90 minutes, divided into two halves of 45 minutes

each, although some competitions allow for an extra 30 minutes if

scores are level at fulltime. The team that has scored the most goals

wins the match.

SOCCER

Track events are run on an eight-lane course. Competitors always run

round the track in a counter-clockwise direction and can be with or

without hurdles. Field events, which take place away from the track

in an athletics stadium, encompass the long jump, high jump, triple

jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, javelin and the hammer events. All

of these demand different skills from the participants and have their

own sets of rules.

Page 19: Creativity, action, service and enrichment portfolio
Page 20: Creativity, action, service and enrichment portfolio

A delicate dance which encompasses grace, balance and control.

As in other hockey codes, players on each team attempt to shoot a

ball or puck into a goal using sticks, usually with a curved end. With

the ice rink on the horizon, floor hockey will help sharpen hand to eye

skills.

A great program to develop these explosive elements in sport. It

combines strength exercises with speed exercises and works on

coordination at the same time.and have their own sets of rules.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION

A subject that relates to camping, hiking, navigation and survival.

Outdoor Education looks at outdoor pursuits in nature. Other examples

include rock- climbing, canoeing, rafting, gathering and more.

Softball is an outdoor sport that was originally played indoors. The

team that scores the most runs wins the game. There are two types

of softball: fast-pitch and slow-pitch.

SOFTBALL

Clubs

Page 21: Creativity, action, service and enrichment portfolio

A game that requires a ball and an endzone. The aim is to touch the

ball on the ground in your team’s endzone, whilst running forward but

only being able to pass to your teammates backwards. The team on

defense can stop the offense by touching the player with the ball with

two hands. Team size is usually 6.

their own sets of rules.

The game of Ping Pong originated in China during the 1760s. It has

been suggested that the game was further developed by British

military officers in India or South Africa who brought it back with them.

A row of books was stood up along the center of the table as a net.

Table tennis was played with paddles made of cigar box lids and balls

made of champagne corks. Here at BHA we have a more modern

approach to this very international game.

The Enrichment aspect of the C.A.S.E. program is all about extending

students in more diverse fields of study. Each enrichment activity

aims to push students to learn in a way that their regular classroom

experience, with the time constrains on set curriculum, may not allow.

It continues our underlying push for student empowerment, giving a

varied array of activities that may not fit under the more traditional

creativity, action or service umbrella, but are still of great interest to

our diverse student population.

It enables students from various year levels to mingle and learn from

each other whilst continuing to enquire, act and reflect on their work.
