PENCIL CHALLENGE

This was one of my favorite tasks this term. The ideas just kept coming and the work was very satisfying. I really liked the re-discovery of an

object that i thought I was so familiar with.The rubber stamps came as a result of the HB sign made out of rubbers, which i tried to print

but it didn’t work out the way I wanted.

PAPER CHALLENGE

I found this task quite challenging because I have worked with paper quite a lot previously and couldn’t free myself from the techniques I was familiar with.

Each glyph is based on one thin strip of paper, I really enjoyed making all the letterforms and working out all the folds

An overall very enjoyable brief, but i don’t feel I was very creative and could push it further.

MATCHBOX PINHOLE CAMERA CHALLENGE

My favorite task this term. I have really enjoyed the workshop and making of the camera, I have never done photography like that

before and have taken a lot out of it. I didn’t have any problems with the camera the first film worked and most of the pictures came out

alright. I would like to push this project further in the future.

Cut out a piece (13-15mm square) of aluminium from the drinks can(1). Place the

aluminium onto some thick cardboard. Press a blunt pencil in the middle of the

square to make a dip (2), then file it down a little bit to make the metal thiner, then

gently make a hole using the needle/pin. Colour the back of the pinhole black. Place

the aluminium onto the box so that the pinhole is exactly in the centre of the square

THE PINHOLE

Cut two pieces of thin card, a square about 32mm, and a rectangle about 25mm

x 40mm. In the square piece, cut out a 6mm square in the centre (1). Place some

black tape on one side of the rectangular piece to prevent light leaks. Place the

square piece over the pinhole and tape down three sides, leaving a gap in the top

into which the rectangular shutter card can slide. Check that the shutter can be

pushed down to fully cover the pinhole.

THE SHUTTER

Take one loop off a spiral binder and place it over the new film canister, the pointed

end of the plastic should enter one of the holes in the film. Tape the plastic to the film

canister securely. Test the clicker by gently pulling out some film. The clicker should

ride on the back of the film smoothly and make a click as it drops into the sprocket

holes.

This project was completly outside of my comfort zone, and I am not very happy with the outcome, I think it looks old-fashioned and restricted.

Take the matchbox tray, and draw two lines from corner to corner, then draw a

square (1) or any other shape - this will be the exposed area of the film. After you’ve

done that cut out the shape (2) with the craft knife, being very careful not to damage

the box.

OLD V NEW (ANALOGUE PRINTING)

This assignment proved to be the most slow going. I didn’t do anything for the first week because I found the brief to lose and coudn’t decide which pair to go for. I have changed the pair twice before actually doing any work. In the end I came up with an idea for a campaign, aimed at art students, which would consist of a series of workshops introducing students to the analogue processes like lino and screenprinting.

CONTRAST LOGO DESIGN

I really enjoyed this assignmet and have pushed it further in my independent practice portfolio. I have never done a branding project before but I think this is something I woud like to explore more as part of my independent practice. I relly liked the style of the brief and will try to apply the 3 stages in my work

TIME AND MOTION

I enjoyed this brief and am quite happy with the different media I tried out during this project. This page shows the experiments I did with wax. Facing page: I adapted a polish tradition of pouring wax on water on St Andrew’s day. Which produced really fun outcome, but was quite difficult to make.
