Sadie Sylvester is a student at Berkshire Community College (BCC). She’s currently studying Liberal Arts and is interested in possibly having a career as a photographer.

“I chose BCC because I knew I didn't want to commit to a four-year college/university. After I graduated high school, I took a year off and attended a gap year school. My class traveled to Israel and that experience really opened my eyes. When the year ended, I knew I wanted to continue my schooling, but wanted to stay local while saving money. BCC was the smartest decision for me.”

Like many BCC students, Sadie works while going to school. She currently holds a work study position with the Office of Student Life. And, if you frequent Guido’s Pittsfield Café, you might just find her hard at work.

She expects to graduate in 2018.

2017 Summer Sessions

May 30 – August 15, 2017

Whether You Are 18 or 80…Welcome to BCC. We offer both noncredit workshops and credit courses to help you achieve your educational goals, enhance your job skills, or simply enrich your life. Berkshire Community College is here for you.

So Long, Bumpy Roads!Following extensive renovations to the two main academic buildings as well as the construction of a new connector, improvements are now planned for exterior areas on BCC's Main Campus.

The scope of "hardscape" work will include the main entrance, the Front Circle, East Road, Fire Road, several parking lots heavily used by students, faculty and staff, and the lot at Paterson Field House. This project will not only improve the appearance of our campus — it will also ease a number of accessi-bility issues and remedy poor road conditions.

The work will begin in early April and is slated for October completion.

Workforce Development & Corporate Training With experienced faculty possessing cutting-edge, industry-specific skills, and campus centers strategically located throughout Berkshire County, BCC is ideally positioned to develop and deliver training initiatives designed to support your human resource development goals. Please see page 15 for additional information.

“These are exciting, invigorating times (at BCC).”

CREDIT COURSESNew StudentsIf you want to enroll in a BCC degree or certificate program, you must be admitted to the college as a degree student before you may register.

If you wish to become a degree student and have not yet done so, please call or visit the Admissions office to obtain an Admissions form and other information. The office is located in Room 113 on the first floor of Field Administration (see campus map on page 30). Phone: 413-236-1630.

Non-Degree StudentsIf you wish to take one or more credit courses for any reason other than obtaining a degree or certificate, you may do so as a non-degree student. As a non-degree student, you do not have to apply for admission to BCC. You simply register for the course(s) you wish to take. However, if any course has a prerequisite, you must present evidence of having satisfied the prerequisite prior to regis-tration. Other college transcripts or the results of BCC’s Learning Skills Assessment (see page 20) may be used as evidence. For more information, call the Academic Advising Center at 413-236-1620.

As a new degree or non-degree student, you may also be required to take the Accuplacer (see Testing on page 20) prior to registration.

Re-Admitted StudentsIf you were previously enrolled in a degree or certificate program at BCC, but have been absent from the college for one or more semes-ters, you need to complete a new admissions application prior to registration. You do not have to pay the application fee.

TestingAccuplacerUnless exempted, all new students enrolling in a degree or certificate program, either as a full- or part-time student, must take a Learning Skills Assessment prior to registration. Non-degree students may be required to take the assessment to demonstrate that they meet particular course prerequisites.

Maximizing Your SuccessAssessment results provide information about your strengths and weaknesses in reading, writing and mathematics. Your scores are used for placement purposes only. They have no bearing on your acceptance to BCC. The results also identify students who require developmental coursework in English and math.

BCC uses the Accuplacer, a College Board standardized assess-ment, administered on a computer for placement testing. You will be assessed in reading and mathematics using an untimed, multiple choice format. In addition, you will be asked to complete a timed-writing sample on the computer. Sample questions can be found by visiting www.berkshirecc.edu/testing. Accuplacer samples are available for your reference.

Scheduling an AssessmentIf you are not exempt (see below) from taking the assessment, you may take it at BCC’s main campus, South County Center or in north county at McCann Tech. All assessments are scheduled by appointment.

Main campus assessments are offered several times each week by the Assessment and Testing Center located on the second floor of the Koussevitzky Arts Center in Room 213.

BCC’s South County Center, located at 343 Main Street in Great Barrington, offers the assessment several times a month. Evening and Saturday sessions are available. Additional sessions are offered during the two months preceding each semester as well as at McCann Tech in North Adams.

To make an appointment for either location, call the Assessment and Testing Center at 413-236-1655. Individuals with disabilities requiring testing accommodations should contact Liz Recko-Morrison at 413-236-1655.

Qualifying for ExemptionsIf you have already completed college-level courses in English and mathematics with a grade of “C” or better, you may be exempt from the Learning Skills Assessment. For more information, call the Admissions office at 413-236-1630 or the Assessment and Testing Center at 413-236-1655.

Other Testing ServicesBCC also offers the Massachusetts Affirmative High School Creden-tial or HiSet (formerly known as the GED), CLEP and DANTES examinations. The Massachusetts Affirmative High School Creden-tial allows individuals ages 16 and up, who are not enrolled in high school, an opportunity to earn a Massachusetts High School Equiv-alency Diploma.

The CLEP and DANTES enable you to earn college credits by successfully completing national, standardized exams in a wide variety of subject areas. For more information, call the Assessment and Testing Center at 413-236-1655.

Auditing CoursesBoth degree and non-degree students may audit credit courses. If you audit a course, you are not required to complete class projects and you do not receive a grade or credit for the course. You are, however, expected to attend class regularly and are encouraged to participate in class work.

To audit a class, you register and pay the same tuition and fees as a credit student. Be sure to indicate your audit status on the registration form. An audit is indicated by an “AU” grade on your transcript. To change from audit to credit, or credit to audit, you must complete the appropriate form at the Registrar’s office by the appropriate dead-line for each session as listed in the academic calendar (see page 16).

RefundsSummer Session refunds are governed by the following policy and schedule:

Refund PolicyIf the college cancels a course, all tuition and fees will be refunded. All refunds are based on the official date of the dropped credits or college withdrawal, as determined by the Registrar’s Office in accor-dance with the following schedule:

• Before first day of session . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 100%• On 1st or 2nd day of session . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 75%• On 3rd or 4th day of session . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 50%• After 4th day of session . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . No Refund

All refunds are processed after the Drop/Add period ends for each session (see academic calendar on page 16). Students can expect to receive their refunds approximately three weeks after a session begins.

Students who drop credits must complete the process through the Registrar’s Office for a refund to be initiated.

Students withdrawing from the college must complete the with-drawal process through the Academic Advising Center for a refund to be initiated.

Students who receive financial aid are subject to a federal refund calculation in addition to the College's Refund Policy above. Aid recipients should contact the Financial Aid Office before withdrawing to learn how they will be affected.

Summer Financial AidSummer Financial Aid is available to continuing students who are Federal Pell Grant recipients and who attended college part-time or only attended one semester during Fall 2016 and/or Spring 2017. Eligible enrolled students can expect to receive a Summer Award Letter by April 11, the beginning of Priority Registration.

To learn more, contact the Financial Aid Office located in the Field Administration Building (F-122) at 413-236-1644.

CREDIT COURSES

Senior CitizensIf you are 60 or older and a permanent, legal resident of Massachu-setts, you may qualify for a categorical tuition waiver. With the waiver, you pay no tuition and only one third of the per credit fees.

You are encouraged to apply for a tuition waiver certificate prior to registration. Application forms are available in the Registrar’s Office at 413-236-2133, where completed forms must be returned along with proof of age (e.g., driver’s license).

Qualified seniors who are non-degree students will be issued a “space-available” tuition waiver if there is sufficient paid enrollment to meet minimum class-size requirements and the course is not filled. Space-available registration for the summer will begin May 22.

Registration begins in the Academic Advising Center (F-117) located in the Field Administration building (see map on page 30). If you are unsure whether you have met the prerequisite for a course, you should consult with the Academic Advising Center prior to registration.

Transfer OpportunitiesMassTransferStudents planning to continue their education after BCC at one of the state-supported universities or colleges in Massachusetts (including MCLA and UMass) are eligible for the MassTransfer program.

For community college graduates who complete designated asso-ciate degrees, this program provides the benefits of:

• Full transfer and applicability of credit; • Guaranteed admission (2.500 GPA or higher); and • A tuition discount (3.000 GPA or higher).

For information, call the Admissions office at 413-236-1630.

Commonwealth CommitmentThe Commonwealth Commitment (through MassTransfer) is the first agreement of its kind in the nation, committing every public campus to providing 10 percent rebates at the end of each successfully completed semester to qualifying undergraduate students, in addi-tion to the standard MassTransfer tuition waiver received upon entering a four-year institution from a Community College.

Participating students must be enrolled full-time and are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA. Students who meet the program requirements

will, depending on the transfer pathway they choose, be able to realize an average savings of $5,090 off the cost of a baccalaureate degree.

often offers a more flexible schedule, online courses are not self-paced. Online instructors provide a framework of due dates and expec-tations that students must adhere to in order to successfully complete a course. Students must have consistent access to a computer and the Internet and be highly organized to take an online course.

Hybrid courses combine online instruction with some scheduled face-to-face class-room sessions. A hybrid course might be a good place to start if you’d like to try an online course, but still want the support and accountability provided by in-person meet-ings with your instructor and classmates.

online & hybrid learning

WHAT IS MOODLE?Moodle is BCC’s online Learning Management System (LMS). Using Moodle, students access course material, submit assignments, and communicate with classmates and the instructor.

Online & Hybrid Learning Online and hybrid learning at Berkshire Community College is facilitated through Moodle, BCC’s online Learning Management System (LMS). Students will use Moodle to access course material, submit assignments, and communicate with classmates and the instructor. Online and hybrid students should also be familiar with MyBCC, our single sign-on application that allows you to access important college information, and BCC student email.

Fully online courses at BCC offer 100% of instruction online. Although students complete course work remotely, which

Is Online & Hybrid Learning for Me?Thinking about taking an online or hybrid course but not sure what to expect? Visit www.berkshirecc.edu/onlinelearning and take a quick Online Learning Self Quiz to see if online learning is right for you.

Recommended Technology Skills for BCC StudentsYou don't have to be a computer wizard to have the technical skills necessary to be a successful college student at BCC, but you do need to be able to:

• Navigate the Internet• Use a search engine• Open, edit and save documents in a

word processing program• Cut, copy and paste text• Use email, including attaching files• Download files and save them to

For online and hybrid courses, students should plan to have consistent access to a home computer with a reliable Internet connection. If you don’t have a home computer available, students may use the Academic Computer Labs on the Main Campus or at the South County Center. Please note that inconsistent access to a computer or the Internet is not an acceptable excuse for missing online course work.

Login and Getting Started information will be sent to students before classes begin via BCC student email accounts. This information can also be found on the BCC website at www.berkshirecc.edu/onlinelearning.

Getting Oriented to Online & Hybrid LearningBCC offers two options for Moodle Orientations: online and in-person.

If you are already comfortable with learning online, you may complete your orienta-tion via the Online Learning web pages at any time. Online orientations and additional resources are available at www.berkshirecc.edu/onlinelearning.

If you are new to online and hybrid learning, we strongly recommend you attend one of the in-person Moodle Orientations at BCC listed below.
