    Re: Statement from Intensive Support and Innovation Center (ISIC) on Crenshaw High School

    On January 15, 2013, the LAUSD Board of Education voted to transform Crenshaw HighSchool to three thematic magnet schools that will serve the Crenshaw High Schoolcommunity. As part of the transformation, Crenshaw will qualify for a total of three (3)additional teachers, a full-time magnet coordinator, and additional funds for each of the 1,250students enrolled at the school site.

    The Los Angeles Unified School Districts Intensive Support and Innovation Center supportsany programs or resources demonstrating a positive effect on student performance atCrenshaw High School. Over the next months, there will be many opportunities for parents,students and community members to provide thoughts on the new plan. We are open to allfeedback, including comments on the proposed academic programs, the suggested staffinglevels for academic departments and the planned student resources, such as the number ofcollege counselors needed. These thoughts would be given consideration before submittinga final plan for Crenshaw.

    Representatives from the districts Student Involvement, Development and EmpowermentUnit have been and will continue to engage students throughout the transformation, capturingrecommendations, feelings and opinions expressed by students. We want to assure ourstudents that their voice will be instrumental to Crenshaws transformation and improvement.

    Parents and community will continue to receive guided support to be active partners atCrenshaw High School through a series of dialogues hosted at Coffee with the Principal

    workshops twice each month. During each workshop, we will work in partnership with theCrenshaw community to see that the transformation meets its goals of:

    Providing every student at Crenshaw High School with a quality learning experiencethrough the magnet school model;

    Identifying gaps in student wraparound services such as more college counseling,mental health services and social services unique to the needs of the student body;

    Assessing the impact on student learning, provided by all school services andprograms. This will include and not be limited to the Crenshaw Extended LearningCultural model;

    Engaging parents, students and community members in the design andimplementation process through monthly design workshops in compliance with theElementary and Secondary Education Act;

    Seeing that the transformation does not disrupt the learning of students, but thatthrough the transformation, we prepare students to reach their full potential in theclassroom and in the community they reside;

    Providing every staff member who holds the credentials at the school site the option tocontinue servicing students at Crenshaw in one of the three thematic magnetprograms and also by offering opportunities to Crenshaw staff to teach at alternateschool sites if they choose not to continue working at Crenshaw;

    Meeting the guidelines that will see through the implementation of the SchoolImprovement Grant (SIG) funds and bring greater resources to students enrolled in amagnet school.

    The first two Coffee with the Principal dialogues will cover the topics of curriculum andinterventions envisioned at Crenshaw High School as well as other topics that attendees wishto discuss. While the topics will be the same in the first two coffee talks, two dates/times arebeing offered on Wednesday, January 30 from 5:30 7:00 p.m. and again on Saturday,February 2 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. in order to accommodate everyones busy schedules. Todocument the dialogues hosted with parents and community members, the meeting minutescaptured during each Coffee with the Principal will be uploaded to the Crenshaw High Schoolwebsite. A complete schedule is attached to this letter.

    We look forward to working directly with the Crenshaw High School community and see thatall students excel in the arts, athletics and most importantly in academics.
