Re: Update from Intensive Support and Innovation Center (ISIC) on Crenshaw High School

Superintendent Dr. John Deasy is looking forward to begin the process of community engagement asCrenshaw High School prepares to be converted into three thematic magnets for the 2013-14 school year.

It is the goal that the three thematic magnets provide a highly focused curriculum as well as high qualityinstruction for Crenshaw High School students. As previously communicated, the first opportunities forinput will take place on Wednesday, January 30 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 2 from10:00 to 11:30 a.m. In these first two meetings, important topics for discussion will include:

The themes and curriculum for each of the three magnets.

The traits of staff that will serve the students of the Crenshaw High School community- includingprincipal, teachers, and support staff.

These meetings, as well as subsequent ones, are critical because we want community input into the plan, but we are also on a tight timeline. The plan must be completed by the end of February so the process ofstaffing can begin in March. At the upcoming meetings, further details about the plan writing and staffing

    will be shared.

In my Wednesday, January 16, 2013 letter, I stated that one of the goals of the transformation is to[provide] every staff member who holds the credentials at the school site the option to continue servicingstudents at Crenshaw in one of the three thematic magnet programs This statement has causedconfusion and I want to clarify here.

The Superintendent has directed that every current certificated and classified staff member, including theprincipal, must reapply as part of the conversion of Crenshaw High School to three thematic magnets.Because this is NOT a RECONSTITUTION, there is not a percentage limit for returning teachers. Everystaff member will have the option to apply for one of the three thematic magnets in a streamlined process.Parents, students and community members will be a part of the interview process.

The compressed timeline is not lost among all of us. The team from the Intensive Support and InnovationCenter will work with the Crenshaw High School community as well as other LAUSD central office staff toensure a thoughtful, transparent and respectful plan writing and staffing process.

    Sincerely,

    Tommy Chang
