Cri du Chat Syndrome
Cri du C hat syndrome affectsapproximately 1 out of every 20,000-50,000 babies. The birth defect happenswhen there is missing information onchromosome # 5.
Babies that are born with this conditionhave a high-pitched cry that sounds likea cat. Common symptoms of Cri duChat syndrome are low birth weight,poor growth, webbing of the fingers andtoes, wide-set eyes, a small head with asmall jaw, abnormal motor skill
development, mental retardation, skintags in front of the ear and a single linein the palm of the hand, known as aSimian crease.
There is no cure available. However,treatment options include various kinds of therapy to help with motor skill developmentand mental retardation.
