Introducing

Page 2: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What is Cricket Champs?

Cricket Champs is a new, completely not for profit program that has been developed in WA and has now been in operation for the last 2 seasons

Page 3: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What is Cricket Champs?

It’s primarily a skills development program very similar to in2Cricket but is specifically targeting kids with varying disabilities and special needs aged 6-16 and giving them the chance to join a community junior cricket club just like everyone else

Page 4: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What is Cricket Champs?

Ideally it becomes a steppingstone for some kids to progress through to mainstream cricket but equally continues to be a fantastic environment for other kids to keep playing and participating in cricket

Page 5: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

Why do we need a separate program ?

Our research, results and feedback tells us that parents of these kids are much more comfortable enrolling their kids into a program that caters to their special needs rather than straight into mainstream

Page 6: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

Why do we need a separate program ?

Cricket Champs needs to be branded separately to catch the attention of these families so they quickly understand thathey, this something for them and a great way for their kids to join juniorcommunity cricket clubs like everyone else

Page 7: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

Why do we need a separate program ?

Most importantly, in many cases the kids need smaller more intimate groups thana standard in2Cricket program. We like to achieve a participant to volunteer ratio of 1:5

Page 8: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What’s in it for cricket and cricket clubs?

More kids playing cricket

Page 9: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What’s in it for cricket and cricket clubs?

More families getting involved and supporting cricket

Page 10: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What’s in it for cricket and cricket clubs?

Be one of the first sports in Australia to adopt and grow a grass roots sporting program for this very important groupwithin our community

Page 11: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What’s in it for cricket and cricket clubs?

Foster a more “inclusive” culture within your cricket club and the community

The Ardross Junior Cricket Club for Cricket Champs, has enabled both my children Jaye and Marc to have the opportunity to learn skills in a fun environment. Normally these skills are being undertaken in Occupational Therapy sessions for both kids, which whilst they find it fun, doesn’t allow them to interact with other children and just be kids having fun with other kids. The coaches have a lot of patience and pass on the skills to the children in a fun-loving way, everyone is included. Thanks to the Cricket Champs and its association with the Ardross Junior Cricket Club Marc has been able to graduate to playing Junior Cricket. He has fallen in love with the sport and enjoys the camaraderie and acceptance of the other kids and the coaches, something that he very rarely gets to enjoy when participating in regular sports. Marc was asked to represent Cricket Champs at a cricket match between WA and NSW. I have never seen Marc so proud and excited as that day. I wish to thank Justin Sambell for the time and effort that he has put in to enable children with special needs the opportunity to participate and enjoy a sport.

Many thanksJeanette Barnesby

Page 13: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

I would like to say to any parents who are looking for a sport for their child that the Cricket Champs

Programme is truly wonderful for any child to participate in.

It has been difficult for us to find a sport that suits our son and this cricket programme has been perfect.

He’s getting exercise, fresh air, making friends and above all his bat & ball skills and co-ordination has

improved considerably. I also enjoy attending the training days, its good healthy fun and I find the

parents are warm, kind and welcoming.

As a parent I would highly recommend this programme if you are looking for a sporting activity for a

child with any differing level or kind of special needs.

Dear Justin,

Tanya and I wanted to thank you and Ardross Junior Cricket Club for Cricket Champs. Both Alex

and Natasha had no knowledge of, or interest in, cricket before the programme (even though I

am a cricket nut) and they both learned a lot of skills. They also have become interested in

cricket and Alex now tells me it is his other favourite sport, after footy.

The joy in the kids’ faces each Monday was a pleasure to watch. I would also like, through you,

to thank Callum and the coaches for their skill and patience with the children. The non-

judgemental, non-stereotyped approach was much appreciated and made the kids feel valued

for who they are, not what they have. It was also nice to give the children the opportunity to

participate in team sports, as this is hard to experience, especially as the children get older. I

hope there is a programme next season.

Rest assured we will be part of it and I will spread the message to my colleagues and patients.

Kind Regards

Andrew Savery

What are we trying to achieve ?

Unity! Promoting the one program together we’ll ultimately achieve much more. I.e. Awareness, uptake and positive outcomes for all

Page 16: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What are we trying to achieve ?

A first of it’s kind, highly successful and rewarding program that we can ALL look back on one day and be very proud of

Page 17: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

What are we trying to achieve ?

Heaps more kids and families playing and loving cricket

Page 18: Cricket Champs - Presentation for Junior Cricket Clubs

Our club is keen to have a go. What are we in for?

Year one you’ll probably have no more than 15 participants. Even if you get just 5

that’s a great start and a wonderful platform for the following season ( Word spreads quick )

Someone to do some promotion through local councils, special education schools etc. E.g. newsletter articles, local papers etc but we also do a fair bit through social media and our contacts as well as popping you on the website.

You’ll need 1 x volunteer per 5 participants which from experience come out of the community very easily. Year 10 plus students fromhigh schools make excellent assistants. You’ll need 1 or two seniorsto be head coordinators who often come out of thedisability services industry.

Generally one of the mums can handle any admin and new enquiries from new families.

Registrations are treated like any other player as is the insurance.

Our club is keen to have a go. What are we in for?

We are working closely with the WACA here in

WA and now also Cricket Australia in the hope that this will become a Cricket Australia product alongside in2Cricket.

For now we are simply spreading the word and getting a few clubs or more per state to pop their hands up and have a go just like we have done in the West.

Please help spread the word and send this presentation off to all of your cricket contacts.
